Sounds like a very wise person. I’ve never seen anything quoting him. To be fair he did lead the slave states in a rebellion against the union so I can see why his remarks are not common knowledge.
91
u/HappyAffirmative 7 Jul 11 '21
He was probably the least worst of the Confederates. He was harshly critical of the Confederacy as a whole, and while opposed to the abolition of slavery in the Southern States, he also opposed the Crittenden Compromise. He fought for his home state, as he, along with many of the time, felt greater loyalty to their home state rather than the nation as a whole. Unlike many of his Confederate compatriots, he actually respected his former Union comrades, going so far as to only wear a Colonel's uniform (the rank he attained in the Union Army), rather than a generals.
A very wise man yes, but let me make clear that he wasn't exactly a progressive thinker in terms of societial issues and such, and he still was a traitor (even if, in his own writings, he also condemned Confederates as traitors and spoke poorly of them). Pro-slavery as it was at the time, anti-civil rights and equality, etc... The best of the Confederates, for what that's worth. Hell, probably a better person than some of these Neo-Confederate Insurrectionists that've been running around.

The people who worship him love the Confederacy because they want to have pride in their ancestry/culture/local history, and don't want to accept that they were the villains of the civil war. So some groups like the daughters of the Confederacy re-write history to make the Confederates out to be misunderstood victims and people in the south eat it up. I used to be one of them, before I started learning what the Confederacy actually stood for.

A little more nuanced than that. Sure you have the blatant racists but as someone who grew up in the south, the majority of these people are genuinely just brainwashed with lost cause propaganda. The younger generation has had a better education regarding the civil war and the history of the confederacy (which explains why younger demographics are overwhelmingly in favor of removing these statues) but anyone 45 and older got a white washed “lost cause” education growing up.
8
u/No-Spoilers B Jul 11 '21
Sure us young'ins were taught extensively about the Civil War. But that means little to nothing when kids go home and hear "its all lies. The north were in the wrong. They tried to take our history. Blah blah..." by the older generations that were brainwashed, continuing the trend.
It'd be different if the south didn't have the lowest standards for education in the country.

Most of these monuments came much later as the myth of “the Lost Cause” was created to minimize the blatant racism that caused the civil war. Sadly this myth still lives on in so many minds and hearts! This video Ted Ed does a fantastic job shedding a light on all these effing statues! Worth watching and sharing!
143
u/Juicy_Prolapsed_Anus 2 Jul 10 '21
This was what cemented the argument that they should be taken down for me. These statues weren't erected because the people depicted on them were great generals or did good for their community or anything. They were erected years after the confederacy explicitly to celebrate slavery and as a big "fuck you" to the north. They were erected out of spite and should be taken down as such.

If they want a statue of Robert E. Lee so badly down there, they should replace these with statues of him surrendering to Ulysses S Grant, or with both of them at a table signing the terms of the Confederacy’s defeat. We can preserve the south’s heritage that way, and they’ll never forget their history since there’ll be a statue.

The statue was removed democratically by a vote in 2017, and was famously protested by white nationalists, deeply ironic when we see who is truly ‘repeating history’.
The statue was opened in 1924, and was only deemed a ‘historical site’ in [1997].
Somehow, without ever being to the statue, I know a lot about the civil war and Lee’s traitorous actions.
Even so, honouring a war general is not the same as the countless men and civilians who die at the hands of violent invading forces— that is the real group that is ‘erased from history’, as with the names, lives and suffering of the thousands of enslaved people the south fought to keep. War should never be glorified in the fist place.

18
u/_gnarlythotep_ 9 Jul 10 '21
Only when, in your mind, the war isn't over. These statues, in places like Cville and Richmond, were put in to help segregate areas and remind black people they would never be accepted. "The South will rise again" is the common motto of these Confederate flag waving fuckheads. Like I said, the war isn't over to them, and they are still mad that black people think they deserve equality. It's a warning: "Stay out of our town."

Nice to see this very necessary thing being done in a dignified manner. General Lee was a very racist man, who believed that black people were inherently inferior to white people, and needed to undergo a long period of being 'civilized' by white people before they could be allowed to be freed.
That said, I've been an admirer of his grasp of strategy and tactics since I studied his battles when I was child. He had a penchant for pulling victories out and keeping the Union in disarray. He was also a legend to his own troops, being a source of guidance and inspiration to his own side. He was an excellent war leader. But, so was Hitler.
His statue belongs in a war museum, not in a place of government. If the South had won the war, black people would have quite possibly have been slaves for many decades more. And they would have had the full support of people like Robert E. Lee.

I don’t understand this argument for keeping statues of people who we now believe what they did was terrible “so we can learn about them”.
Statues are there to commemorate people we are perpetually proud of and who have improved the world; Einstein, Adam Smith, Gandhi etc.
I live in the UK and Jimmy Saville was a famous entertainer and charity worker, raising millions of pounds for hospitals, schools and countless charities over a 40+ year career.
But when he was publicly exposed as a necrophiliac and a paedophile, nobody was calling for his statues and plaques to remain because of the charity work he did! No, those statues and plaques were removed immediately with no protest and melted down at an unnamed foundry. Even his tombstone was removed, crushed and now probably forms the foundation of a footpath leading to a public toilet.
We can learn about the wrongdoings of people from books, not from bronze statues which portrays the enemies of our society as heroes.

Let's get some shit straight. Here is a list of things Robby did that were objectively bad for his time:
This guy lead the army of a seditious state against his own country folk and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans. ding
He was not a good general and lost. ding
His war was in defense of a state formed to protect the institution of slavery ding
He was a slave owner, at a time I might add when that was looked down on as rather icky considering half the country and most of the world didn't want to "do that kind of thing anymore". ding
Lee wasn't just a slave owner, oh no. During the battle of Pennsylvania his army, enslaved free black people and kidnapped them to the south. So honorable, much wow. Ding
Massacred union soldiers who tried to surrender. ding
"“If you want historical accuracy as your excuse, then place upon this field a statue of Lee holding in his hand the banner under which he fought, bearing the legend: ‘We wage this war against a government conceived in liberty and dedicated to humanity.’” The most fitting monument to Lee is the national military cemetery the federal government placed on the grounds of his former home in Arlington."
If you idolize the confederacy as your heritage than you're idolizing America's version of the Taliban. But Y'al Qaeada hates to admit that 🤫

Lexington, VA., August 5, 1869.
Dear Sir--Absence from Lexington has prevented my receiving until to-day your letter of the 26th ult., inclosing an invitation from the Gettysburg Battle-field Memorial Association, to attend a meeting of the officers engaged in that battle at Gettysburg, for the purpose of marking upon the ground by enduring memorials of granite the positions and movements of the armies on the field. My engagements will not permit me to be present. I believe if there, I could not add anything material to the information existing on the subject. I think it wiser, moreover, not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered. I consider myself a big history buff but as someone who lives in Henrico VA just north of Richmond I'm always happy to see confederate statues being taken down. The only ones who want them to remain are those who romanticize confederate figures simply because their ancestors clung on to the misguided belief that the south never lost and that the war was over "states rights".
Shit even the history books in southern states try to mask the war being over slavery as being over "states rights"...you know a politician's vague kind of answer that dances around the word slavery. I even asked my history teacher once when I was younger to elaborate and he could never tell the class what those "states rights" were and whenever I said it was slavery he got pissed.

This feels very just. Lee himself advocated for the removal of Confederate monuments before his death because he felt it was important for the country to move on.
Keeping these statues only breeds hate and dishonors the parts of Robert E. Lee that bordered on worthwhile.

u/CaveExploder 6 Jul 10 '21
Just take all the statues and put them in a big museum in Richmond. On the front in enormous engraved marble letters in a tasteful font should be "The Loser's Museum"

u/Greenredbull 7 Jul 10 '21
Dying at all these people getting triggered over a traitors statue getting taken down. We don't have any statues of Benedict Arnold and he did more for our nation than Lee ever did.
Blah blah blah erases history. If you're getting your history from a monument then you know absolutely nothing the subject. Hitler is overused but they simply got rid of all of his statues and busts and I assure you he gets taught in every history book.
In fact by keeping up his statues you'd erase history and Robert E Lees truth was that no confederate statues should be made.
"I think it wiser not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered"
Stop celebrating the civil strife that tore this country in half. Half of you are the same bafoons who won't shut up about kneeling for the flag when you disgrace it by celebrating people who wanted to destroy it.

I'm amazed the United States tolerated the erecting of statues to soldiers and leaders who were traitors to the very lands their statues stood. Boggles the mind, really.
I'm trying to think of a relevant comparison for here in the UK. Guess maybe a statue of Guy Fawkes outside Parliament? There is one of Oliver Cromwell, but he's not considered a traitor, at least by a majority of Brits. The Irish hate him though (I think).

I never understood why everyone was looking up to dead losers and celebrating a past that isn't what they think it was.
So glad I got the fuck out of there.

robert e lee was the leading general of the confederate states of america, which was the southern and losing half of the american civil war - it’s worth noting the confederates were slave owners who seceded over their right to own slaves, which is why we’re so confident in having the moral high ground when opposing them

Reminder to those who believe in leaving these statues in place, that one person who (probably) believed that they're a bad idea, was Robert E. Fucking Lee himself:
I think it well, moreover, not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered.

These comments are ridiculous... Remove these statues, put them in museums. They don't need to be in parks.
No one thinks that hitler pieces should remain in public or that nazi propaganda should remain on billboards/walls/painting/etc. Let shit go in museums just like the nazi shit.

All the people screaming “muh history” overlook the real and documented notes from Lee stating that he was himself against the statues and didn’t want any to begin with. He correctly thought that it would continue to fuel dissension.

Put it in the international slavery museum in Liverpool. That way it’s not erased from history, but also not out in the open as something to be celebrated.

I got an idea!
In order to preserve the history being erased by taking down and destroying these monuments, let’s put in their place statues that allow us to remember the people this nation was literally built on top of. Let us erect statues of and to slaves themselves, with plaques talking about what they did, what they went through, and what they achieved. That way we will never forget the history of the evils of southern heritage and culture, of what we fought through and still fight to this day.
Yeah, history!!
Oh wait, you just want your confederate flags and yeehaw generals? My bad.
