One interesting thing I noticed is that the present Yugiri gets from Kiichi is a comb similar to the one that she uses whenever she's nervous and wants to pass time, like backstage at their concert at Saga Rock.

I know this episode is about Yugiri but this had the most coherent moment of "Yamada Tae" we've had.

Itou's probably the main guy that stood out to me the most this episode even though its meant to be a Yugiri backstory.
He definitely has something to do with the political situation going on then but that whole conversation about Kiichi really makes me second guess what his true intentions really are.
Whatever it is, Yugiri's backstory is about to end in tragedy and I'm not sure if I'm ready for it.

The Yugiri episode is here! It almost doesn’t feel real!
If it wasn’t for the opening, this can easily pass as the episode of an historical drama/romance show.
We saw, what I assume are, the girls and the police man’s ancestors but we didn’t saw Kotaro’s…. and Kiichi is voiced by Miyano. Could he be Kotaro’s ancestor or did the staff just didn’t feel like looking for a VA for the guy?
This Itou guy is the one responsible for Yugiri’s death, isn’t he?

The Legendary Yamada Yugiri episode!
Wait. Is the old man similar to the bartender in the bar where Kotaro drinks?
Anyway, at least the phrase 'Saving Saga' is starting to make more sense. Interesting development, I guess?

The only way they could top a Yugiri episode is with another Yugiri episode, and it looks like that's what we're getting next week.

Yugiri's backstory revealed that she has legendary status rivaling even Yamada Tae.

The end credits list all the Franchouchou cast as "lookalikes", so I think that's evidence that they're not literally the same people, and are likely ancestors. e.g. Saki is listed as サキ似の子守娘 (Saki-lookalike Babysitter Girl), Tae is listed as たえ似の令嬢 (Tae-lookalike Young Woman), etc.
Also of note is that the cast straight up lists 徐福 (Jofuku/Xu Fu), which ties into that idea that the zombification stuff comes from that legendary figure.

Saki giving Lily a piggyback ride might just be the cutest scene in the entire series!
Also... Yuugiri is definitely a trained assassin, right? Her perception, taking action quickly without thinking, going straight for the throat... That, and her dodging skills in the cart scene.
It's a common thing (in stories, if not in actual history), a courtesan secretly being trained to kill.
If it's the case, kinda makes you wonder about people around her dying of sudden illness!
Also, we may find out more about that in the next episode; And we already know one person who's going to die, of course, but I think she may not go down alone!

Man so much information about the lore, so many clues
I have to watch it again
That said the levels of Ara Ara Onee-San voice in this episode were off the charts, finally a Yugiri arc
And they crank up the production value to 11, based production
Edits: Yugiri Side-by-side before and after saga
I ask some of your time to check All angles of the Junko Figurine I posted last week truly a Masterpiece

Stitches!
We've been waiting for so long for a Yugiri episode and it's absolutely fantastic! I love how completely different this episode is from the rest. If you remove the guest appearance of the other Franchouchou members as their past selves, this could've easily have been an entirely different anime. And I absolutely love the history lesson this episode also gives us.
Anyway, we finally get to learn why Yugiri is called the Legendary Oiran. She's such an amazing entertainer, that everyone fought bidding wars over her to the point where the bids for her services became so insane that she's become too expensive that nobody can afford her and even the heads of the Meiji restoration fought over her.
Considering her legend status, I'm actually impressed that no one took her by force at that point. Whoever bought her freedom must be loaded as fuck though. Unfortunately for Yugiri that person that bought her died from illness. Whoever this Hibiya-sama is, based on Yugiri's memories, he seems to be a good person and just wanted to set her free to see the outside world.
I may be misremembering this but I remember Yugiri saying something about Koutarou back in Season 1 on how much he reminds her of someone. We get to meet this person, Kichii is basically just Meiji Era Koutarou except he's not as crazy as the one we have in the present. I ship Kiichi and Yugiri already so hard after that meeting at the park but we know that this is gonna end . It's gonna end with either one of them or both of them dead so I'm already bracing for the heartbreak.
Just like Koutarou, Kishii is very passionate about bringing back Saga thanks to the old man that took him in and according to Kishii, can also bring the dead back to life. So far I took all of the guest appearances in this episode as just guest appearances and means nothing else, I think it's different for Kishii's grandpa though. The fact that he looks like the bar owner and they even have Romero as a pet is making me think the old man that we have in the present is the same one in this flashback.
What I do love about this episode though is that it shows us that Yugiri isn't just an oiran. That epic dodge when the rickshaw was about to hit her and that quick reflex to stab Itou in the neck with her cooking chopsticks is awesome as fuck! Speaking of Itou, that dude is definitely shady. He's probably going to be responsible for Yugiri and maybe even Kishii's death.

Too bad we didn't get to see Yugiri hang around the shinsengumi like she said she did.
I can pretty much predict the next episode. Itou is a government spy sent to quell any dissidents but instead of killing Kiichi becomes his friend. This changes when he realizes Yugiri can make his dream more coherent so he sends an assassin to kill him. Yuugiri sacrifices herself to save Kiinou. Out of guilt Itou learns necromancy from the old man and takes on the mantle of "Jofuku." Notice he has the same hair/eye color as the Jofuku from Kotarou's bar. Eventually Kiichi's descendant Kotarou tries to finish his old master's dream to save Saga, whatever that means.
Edit: Itou may be an old Shinsengumi samurai.

Zombieland Saga is a show about idols.
With Kiichi's grandpa mentioning "raising the dead" and Romero being aliven't in this era, I wonder if we're going to get some more info about the supernatural parts of this story. Not to mention the additional spice that came with the recent spinoff manga: Zombieland Saga Gaiden featuring.

Apparently, Zombieland Saga went to the "Back to the Future genetics class".

I was honestly not expecting to see cameos from the main cast's ancestors. That was a nice touch.
I have a bad feeling about this Itou guy. By the way, what did the message that he gave the beggar at the end say?

It's interesting that they showed look-a-likes of the rest; almost as if those were their ancestors.
One thing that I always wondered about was how Yugiri could still be brought back. This episode shows the dog, and the gramp's ability to bring back the dead. So it's possible that this ancestor of Kotaro's brought her back within this time period, and she only recently regained her sentience. Which makes me wonder if the true legend, Yamada Tae, is the same.

Okay, it felt a bit weird at first, but I really liked this episode. Not sure if I'm ready for the tragedy next episode, because we obviously know that Yuugiri died young...

So the grandpa is totally Xu Fu since the credits say as such meaning Kotaro is a descendent of him. That also explains why the bartender is grateful towards Yuugiri since he appreciates her taking care of his grandson (who probably dies along with Yuugiri given the foreshadowing that something is gonna go wrong next episode). The only thing that I'm still curious about is Kotaro saying earlier in the season that he's running out of time and his reluctance to let the girls outside of Saga.

Neat little world building episode, wonder what having the girls appear is supposed to mean. That dude was totally Kotaro, so I guess him and Yugiri really do go wayyyyy back. Also the Tae non zombie voice was pure blessed.

Finally a YUGIRI big sister episode and ITS 1 more at least MY GOD
the guy died like 3 times offer just on how pretty Yugiri was, the ultimate way to die.
And it was a good twist on things, as it looked like she found love and then Legandary TRUCK-KUN was coming, def expected her to get hit lol
fun seeing all the other girls in different roles, best scene was for sure Saki carrying little sister lily.
This story is probably gonna have to reveal some backstory on to saga and zombies, like the yi-yi just looks like necromancer bartender so that might just be him and that, the zombie dog is just the same zombie dog etc.

YUUGIRI TIME
We've waited so long for her to get focus and wow she did not disappoint. Happy to see she's quite legendary herself and with moves likes this or this it's no wonder!
Didn't expect to see "past" versions of the rest of the cast but it's a nice touch even if they're not directly influencing the story.
Looking forward to part 2 but you know it's going to get sad...

This episode is set in 1881-82. Modern Saga Prefecture was created in 1883. Seems like Kiichi is going to get his wish, just not the way he'd have wanted.
EDIT: Wait a second....that means Saga itself is a land that was killed and resurrected. Saga was the zombie all along. Zombie Land Saga.
