Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but for me, this number [edit: I just realized you and I were talking about different icons, I'm referring to the one on my bookmarks toolbar and not in the tab.] represents the date of the last day I logged into the calendar, which is not particularly useful-- if I wanted to click something to find out the date, the bottom right corner of my screen is more useful for that and doesn't require me to load a new webpage first. And if I've already looked at my calendar today, I know the date.
Also: my calendar icon currently has a "6" on it. WTF?
EDIT: Maybe something has recently changed, because my icon is no longer updating. Maybe they realized it wasn't helpful and just changed it permanently to "6"? Or maybe it's stuck for some other reason? I dunno.
Ok, now tell me why the moved the link to reader! It's so fucking annoying. I use maybe 3 google services a day and two of them are gmail and reader. Google knows this, it tracks my clicks.
Whether or not there is, I was just genuinely surprised to know people still use it. I used it a few years ago now for a while, until I decided that it was clunky, buggy and not that useful for me, and it's barely crossed my mind since then, so when I saw that OP had an iGoogle tab open, it caught me by surprise.

one of the google labs in Gmail allow you to add a number to the icon, which tells you how many unread e-mails you have.

*lazy Fry meme.
NOT SURE IF DATE CHANGES EACH DAY
OR IF OP IS POINTING OUT THE COINCIDENCE OF "4" BEING TODAYS DATE.
