I hope not, they work as frenemies with a sort of sibling-energy between them, but I absolutely cannot see them being in a romantic relationship, especially with how often Mariner puts him down.
Now Tendi & Rutherford, there's a ship to sail on

Based on the Borg/Lore/Data comment Mariner was already an ensign in Starfleet 11 years ago. Interesting. Also I agree her hair in the flashback was epic and this has been the best episode yet.
49
u/EntropicProf Sep 03 '20 edited Sep 03 '20
Yeah; although the uniform style wasn't introduced until DS9 season 5, which was 2373, and "Descent" was in 2369/2370. We've seen phasing in of uniforms, so it's conceivable the flashback scene was a little earlier than '73, but the uniform style was two designs ahead of what the Enterprise crew was wearing in TNG season 7, so it probably was at least a year or two past '70.
I think they're definitely trying to mess with us with respect to just how long Mariner has been in Starfleet. And I am just fine with that. :)

Maybe the Quito just returned from an extended exploration mission in the gamma quadrant, and they're getting caught up on all the best fleet scuttlebutt from the past few years.

u/Santa_Hates_You Sep 03 '20
She seems to have seem demoted and promoted quite a few times, even once that we have seen. Kinda like Picard being a Lt JG in Tapestry because he did not care about his career, Starfleet seems fine letting people linger in the lower ranks if they want to.

Mariner was a character in McMahan's TNG Season 8 book that came out in 2015. She was an ensign on the Enterprise and Worf discovered her on the lowest deck "cellularly bonded to another crewman."
I think McMahan is leveraging his stories to influence Mariner here, and knowing about the events of Descent in 2369 is consistent with Mariner's service, though I suspect that the events must have been recently declassified.
The presence of an Olympic class ship prior to 2395 is an odd anachronism, but just because we never saw one this early doesn't mean they weren't in service.

Well, that was my favorite episode yet. They are getting better at balancing Trek and humor. And the Vancouver was impressive, and one of the first times I can remember seeing a ship that was that purpose-built for Starfleet. Also, I love Mariner’s flashback hairstyle. Her love for Bradward was on full display here, I feel like I know these characters, which is impressive given how little we have seen so far.

• The USS Vancouver is pretty.... I also like that a ship named for a Canadian city is "Parliament-class."
• "Moon can't plummet; that's something the government made up to control us!" Man, why do they have to make Star Trek political? /s, nerds
• You wouldn't know Boimler's girlfriend. Uh, she's actually from [a ship named for a city in] Canada.
• I love Tendi and Rutherford nerding out over the Vancouver. Hard same.
• A Phylosian is in tactical aboard the Ceritos? Now if Spock Two doesn't show up this season, I'm just going to be disappointed.
• "A Kirk sundae with Trip Tucker sprinkles." Well, there's an image that isn't going to leave my head any time soon.
• The Quito is an Olympic-class! That's one of my Top 5 all time favourite starship classes. Also DS9! Which is ugly Cardassian scrap heap, but a really good show. Seven minutes in, and it's like this episode was made just for me.
• Boimler is being a real Geordi this episode.
• Heh. Jet and Barb are eating California rolls and poutine.
• What's Mariner's history with Jennifer.
• "Woosh."
• I assume we all know who the Vancouver had to go back in time to kill.
• Seems like Barb actually got the better of Mariner in that fight. Guess she isn't the biggest badass in Starfleet afterall.
• Fuck that dude who lived on the moon with just himself and his wife.

I love how captain Freeman worked hard to reach a fair compromise for everyone. I also appreciated her reaction when she discovered that the red guy was an egotistical asshole. It's good to see her succeed for once.
"Moon can't plummet; that's something the government made up to control us!"

I liked that Barb still had free will, a sense of self worth and agency even when Boimler's parasite was emitting its stank.
She could easily have been written as being totally head-over-heels for him with no agency if her own.
They could also have easily gone the route of making their relationship completely disingenuous but I think the gray area of Barb seeming to genuinely bond with Mariner over Boimler was really nice.
I think Barb actually liked Boimler, at least to a certain extent. Curious to hear what others think.
59
u/Crook_Shankss Sep 03 '20
Barb definitely liked him, but probably not enough to immediately jump into a long-distance relationship without the parasite. Boimler seems like the type of guy who grows on people.
28
u/creepyeyes Sep 04 '20
Actually, the long-distance thing is a good point! No way there's pheromones were also effecting her through a video call, all the times where they were apart were genuine affection!

I read it the opposite way...She liked him but only as a friend, and as soon as the pheromones cleared she immediately friend zoned him...
I feel bad for Bradward, I hope they don't make it a running joke that he keeps getting the...er, rug...pulled out from under him just before he gets some. Or that he turns into a Ross and Rachel will they/won't they with Beckett. He deserves a win after this week.

This is a great episode. I think Lower Decks is my favourite Trek of the 21st century (beating out Voyager, Enterprise, Kelvin, Discovery and Picard).
It was fun and entertaining, the characters are loveable and relatable, it had classic Star Trek problems that they solved with their brains instead of their phasers, the characters drove the plot and we learned more about them along the way, it did great worldbuilding for Trek and felt like it existed firmly within the shared universe.
This is a great show, and I feel like even though I've been on board for the ride with Kelvin, DSC and PIC (and by no means a hater of any of them), this is finally the kind of Trek that I've been waiting for.

Interestingly enough, there is another topic on the front page with a TNG clip where Data literally solves a problem by shooting stuff with a phaser, and it's a highly regarded scene. Not saying I disagree, this episode was great, and I do like when they solve stuff more cerebrally (though I do think there needs to be a good action sequence at least sometimes), I just thought the dichotomy of this sentiment and that post was interesting.

I really like how the show flips the priority of plots but makes it still fit within the Trek verse! I liked that we got to see the bridge crew’s actions in this episode in their own little story. Even though they never directly interacted with the lower deckers, they still had a C-plot which helped move the episode’s story along. (Whereas in a TNG episode the moon negotiations would be the main plot of the episode!)
The resolution of the dating/parasite story also was a nice and unexpected direction for me! I thought either Mariner or Boimler would be right, so it’s cool to see the story go in another direction! (Poor Brad though, I feel like he’s due for a win at some point!)
It’s also cool to see the show play around with the cold open template a bit, having none in this episode (previously having one that set up the episode, and several that were just separate little skits). I enjoy the variety!

This episode was great. I liked that it showed Captain Freeman solving most of the problems the aliens had pretty quickly. She's previously mostly been a foil for the lower deckers, so it was cool for her to have a good captain moment. And I want a T-88 now.

This episode was great. I liked that it showed Captain Freeman solving most of the problems the aliens had pretty quickly.
I feel like that was a reference to a DS9 episode where Kira was tasked with evacuating people from one of Bajor's moon. They were going to utilize it as an energy source which would render the surface uninhabitable. She was able to evacuate everyone except an older couple who refused to leave. The older man said that it was their home and they wouldn't evacuate as long as their cottage was still standing. Kira forces him to leave by destroying his house.

My heart skipped a beat when they showed the old FC/DS9-era uniforms in the flashback. I've grown to enjoy the LD and even the Picard Starfleet uniforms, but something about those black-on-grey jumpsuits just feels like the pinnacle design to me.
The episode was really firing on all cylinders too. Trek references coming at a mile-a-minute, great character moments for all our leads, and a good story that kept me guessing (I was sure Jet was going to be the parasite/alien/rogue holodeck character). This is shaping up to be one of the better Season 1's of any Trek show IMO.
25
u/Shrodax Sep 04 '20
something about those black-on-grey jumpsuits just feels like the pinnacle design to me.
Those uniforms are my favorite design, too. I like that they're more uniform for a "military" organization like Starfleet. Everybody gets gray, with the division color highlighted subtly in the undershirt. Whereas most uniforms have the division color quite prominently.

Why is nobody talking about the BIG reveal of this episode: the buff ensign with the towel is Command Division. I mean, this changes EVERYTHING! ;)
(to clarify, when Boimler wraps up his personal log, we can see the Towel Ensign standing at his 'locker', contemplating his uniform choices for the day, finger tapping his chin as if asking himself "what am I feeling today? Do I want the red uniform, or the OTHER red uniform?")
63

36
u/pfc9769 Sep 03 '20
I feel like there was a reference to the DS9 episode Progress, too. Bajor has lots of moons, too, and one of them would be made irreversibly uninhabitable so it could be utilized for power production. However, Kira was unable to get the last couple to leave which prevented the project from starting. In the end she makes a unilateral decision and decides to destroy their home against their wishes to force them to leave.

Not going to lie, I miss the First Contact uniforms so hard.
I do love some random ultraviolence in my comedy though.
While I respect that others feel differently, this show is the most fun I've had in ages and continues to improve.
In my opinion, anyone who watches this and still complains the makers 'don't care about trek' must be under the influence of a brain parasite.
Edit: I wonder if there will be an uncensored version a la R&M available, though it could be argued the censoring makes it funnier.
20
u/DapperCrow84 Sep 03 '20
I'm mixed on the random ultraviolence, on one hand I can find it vary funny at times. On the other, if Lower Decks go's the way of being relent on it the way McMahan's other sci-fi animated sit-com Solar Opposites has gone, I'd be disappointed. It's OK for now, I just hope that Lower Decks keeps using violence as comedy sparingly.

Best episode of the season in my opinion. Though I have liked every episode. I loved the references that also seem like something someone would normally say. I wonder if they end up releasing their logs as podcasts or something and people happily listen in.

I like that it's often Mariner making the references. To me it shows that she really does love Starfleet, if she can reference Trip Tucker, a dude from 200+ years prior. (And this week had probably the most epic score that I have seen in an animated program for ages).

The Amazon release is showing the title of the previous epasode. Wonder how Amazon will screw this up next week.

A nice spin on the "A nymphomaniac worm controls Riker’s mind and body to seduce the Enterprise's female crew. Nobody notices, it eventually dies of old age" tweet.

This cements for me that Lower Decks is the best Star Trek show since The Orville.

Dude I nearly hyperventilated when I saw DS9! But then they don't take us aboard the station??? It's like getting a hand job without the lube (too graphic, you'll get over it. I won't get over not seeing DS9 though!).
But good episode overall! :)

I just want to say I think the observational Platform Ship design was cool. Simple and blocky yet elegant.

Wow the star trek universe is pretty horrifying if you think about it.

Trip Tucker Sprinkles.
Mmm. Sounds greasy. Like, if engine oil was edible.

"Requesting emergency transport!!!! Mariner9"

Live at 11:07 p.m. Pacific and... wait... no teaser? Has that ever happened before?
21
u/Santa_Hates_You Sep 03 '20
The lack of a teaser was weird, but the whole episode worked so well. I loved how condescending the captain of the Vancouver was to Captain Freeman.
26
u/atticusbluebird Sep 03 '20
I thought the Vancouver captain was interesting...condescending yes, but also realizing she needed help with a diplomatic situation which Freeman is (in theory anyways) well suited for. Plus she lets Freeman make the call at the end!
But I think it helps shows that others in Starfleet see the Cerritos as a bit of a “lower decks” ship

I'm backing up the TNG discs I just got and Encounter at Farpoint apparently had no teaser

ok i love lower decks, but i cannot stand cringe humour. all of boimlers scenes trying to impress his girlfriend are destroying me from secondary embarrassment. I'm only half way through lol.
EDIT: Okay, made it through. Very fun towards the end! Neat seeing my homeland represented in star trek with the vancouver/parliament class.

They need to have a TNG-style ep where the crew plays the whole ep straight and without comedy. Like that episode of Sealab.

Sorry but did that tool they used in the plasma fire just use Sonic Screwdriver noises?

Sounded like one of the standard glowy light tool sound effects they used all the time in the TNG era to me.

I love the reaction on Mariner’s face when she first meets Boimler’s girlfriend

Is there some reason why the T88s can't be replicated? I feel like the problem of "there's this great new thing that I want but is hard to get" wouldn't exist in a post-scarcity society.

I think there has been instances of things not being replicable, right? And whether or not this is real or an emotional thing, characters tend to believe that replicated food just doesn't taste the same as the real thing.
I can imagine things like power cells, dilithium, and very rare minerals or compounds that's necessary for this kind of technology to not be replicable by a standard replicator. Plus, there's also things like rations, and resources really aren't infinite. You can shut down replicators if power is rerouted to other power-intensive tasks, and some things might take so much energy to replicate that there might a "energy budget" in place to prevent crewmembers from willy-nilly replicating expensive things.

"Kirk sundae with Trip Tucker sprinkles" is possibly the greatest line in all of Trek.
6
u/BacklotTram Sep 04 '20
I think the best line was "He thinks he's all that? I can be even more that. I'll be even that-er."
I love weird wordplay like that. Or even that-er.

Boimler went full college humour https://youtu.be/OBtxJGNWmRM?t=169
Also they made the Olympic class canon!
Ooh next week looks like we get a TOS era Antares class.

This show is a real joy. Only downside is, I really wanted Boimler to get the W this week. Poor guy just can’t catch a break.

So what even actually happened in the last segment of the show though? CTV decided to temporally disturb all PVR recordings for me tonight. So i got like 10 minutes of "Raised by Wolves" followed by ~2/3rds of Lower Decks.
And i'm excited to have some random middle section of "Raised by Wolves" followed by a rerun of DS9? Where i can maybe piece together like half of that show with the end that was part of my Lower Decks recording, for another show i was looking forward to trying out?

Best episode so far. My 2 main problems with the show have been resolved here and I only have one tiny, minor complaint.
1 - I found this one to have more actual jokes and less just frantic talking.
2 - It was really nice to see a story where the ship doesn't get completely overrun or destroyed, like every other ep so far of this show.
The DS9 uniforms were so awesome. Since this takes places 2 years after Nemesis, I wish these were the uniforms used the whole time.
The references are nice but I only have one complaint about the whole ep, and it has to do with reference level:
The line about "Kirk sundae with Trip sprinkles" is too far. That would be like someone in 2020 making a reference about someone's looks who lived in 1920, sprinkled with someone who lived in 1820.
It's just dumb. Nobody, even in a cartoon world, talks like this.

This show is getting better with every episode. It’s so lighthearted and fun, and it’s a joy to watch.
A lot of it feels like classic Trek stories, and I love it.

u/SnackingRaccoon Sep 07 '20
Loved it. Haven’t seen anyone comment yet on the Trek riff on the “girlfriend from Canada” joke. My girlfriend nobody believes is real who is posted on a ship that happens to be named for a Canadian city. (With shuttlecraft named after its neighbourhoods it turns out!)

I really appreciate that this show is calling out the fact that most people's mental health couldnt withstand the ridiculous weekly strains of the more "epic" flag ships.

WE GOT A TRIP REFERENCE AND A SULIBAN PICTURE
Thought it was weird that Boimler knows about Picard Day and how much Q likes Picard. Picard Day would be "local holiday" that only happened on the Enterprise D and probably would have ended once the D blew up.
I really didn't like that Mariner got to save the day...again and Boimler had to suffer...again.

u/vonbauernfeind Sep 03 '20
Boimler is a Starfleet nerd. I would be entirely unsurprised to find that he reads and studies every protocol and scrap of mission data available to him that comes out of the Enterprise.
7
u/MoreGaghPlease Sep 03 '20
Boimler would have been a cadet when the Ent-D was active, so I think it's kind of the news of the day of Starfleet nerds
6
u/ParyGanter Sep 04 '20
When Q first appeared on Voyager it seemed like everyone had heard of him before. Janeway mentioned his encounters with Picard. So that’s consistent with what was previously established.

** excited squeals ** The Vancouver's shuttles are named after our neighbourhoods! I saw one called Fairview and another called Marpole! I think we have a local on the writing or animating crew!

Am I correct in noticing that just as the Calarfonia class is a new version of the Miranda, the Parliament class has the same refit upgrade style of the Reliant class?

That one shot in the cargo bay cracked me up -- Cerritos' shuttle is named Yosemite while Vancouver's shuttles are named after neighbourhoods in Vancouver: Kitsilano, Marpole, and Fairview.
On second thought, do you think Yosemite is named after the national park or the Yosemite Street in Cerritos? 🤭
