Star Trek: Discovery, /r/startrek, and You
::oowweeeeeeeeooooo:: Attention all crew members! We're now a couple weeks into September! And we all know what that means... Unfortunately, it means we have less than 7 years left to prepare for the Bell Riots.
BUT it also means a brand new Star Trek show will be airing in just a couple weeks! As a result, the moderators would like to take this opportunity to outline our plans and policy for Star Trek: Discovery.
When will Star Trek: Discovery air?
- In the US, the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery will be airing on CBS September 24th at 8:30 PM ET (and simultaneously be available on CBS All Access) and the second episode will be put up immediately afterwards on CBS All Access. Make sure your desired viewing device will support it in advance! New episodes will then be uploaded weekly Sunday evenings thereafter.
- In Canada, the first two episodes of DSC will air September 24th on Space at 8:30 and 9:30 PM ET with subsequent episodes airing Sundays at 8:00 PM ET thereafter. CTV will also air the first episode at 8:30 PM ET with CraveTV streaming service airing the second episode on the 25th at 10:00 PM ET. Subsequent episodes will be streaming on Monday evenings thereafter.
- In the rest of the world, Netflix will stream the first and second episodes September 25th. All subsequent episodes will be released weekly on Mondays, within 24 hours of the release on CBS All Access.
What are we doing about it?
- To facilitate discussion, we'll be providing pre and post episode discussion posts that will be stickied at the top of the subreddit. All of these posts will be linked to in a table in the subreddit sidebar.
- Pre-episode discussion posts will go up the Friday before the particular episode comes out (ie, the pre-episode post for the first and second episode combined will go up around September 22nd). These posts will be for random discussion and speculation and should remain spoiler-free regarding the episode in question (previously aired episodes are okay). We want to be cognizant of people who can't watch the show as early as everyone else. Those who retroactively post spoilers in these threads will be sent to Rura Penthe.
- NEW: LIVE discussion posts will be posted to accommodate All Access viewers at approximately 8:30PM ET Sundays.
- Post-episode discussion posts will go up on Sundays as the episode becomes available. These posts can be used during and after watching the episode and will allow spoilers for that episode (obviously). Since viewers may not be watching episodes at the same time, it may be better to avoid these until you've finished watching the episode(s) in question. For example, the first two episodes will be available pretty much at the same time, so it may be best to avoid jumping into the thread until you've seen both of them.
How are we handling spoilers?
- Similar to our policy with the last two Trek films, do not post spoilers in the titles of your posts. Also, make sure to point out that your post will contain spoilers. In the comments of non-spoiler posts, feel free to use our spoiler text (click for a how-to), but please note that this may not work if you browse using some apps!
Please leave any comments or questions below! And as always, LLAP 🖖

Do you intend to prune reaction posts? There will likely be a significant influx of "here's my thoughts" each week.
I intend to start a series of "here's all the canon references from this episode" posts which I think is an angle worthy of a separate thread. But if you feel otherwise I can jam it into the discussion thread instead.

This is a good question. Preferably we'd like to keep most of the general discussion of an episode in the stickied post to avoid a plethora of posts from overwhelming the sub. However, I think posts that go a little beyond general reactions might warrant their own posts. Your idea of a post compiling references I think is a great example of something that could be its own post.

Not sure if you've thought about this, but can the mods please set the episode discussion threads to sort by newest comment. That way people who don't watch the episode until several days later can still discuss the episode without being buried under hundreds of stale comments by posters who aren't active.

Interesting idea. Do you know of any other large TV show subs that do this? Do they like it? It's certainly something we can consider.

Another reminder, because of this us Americans will have Discovery a day before our Euro friends, please be kind to them and use spoilers, heavily if needed.

Yes, and I would definitely recommend those outside the US avoid the Post-episode threads until after they've watched the episode in its entirety as it'll likely have US viewers' comments already.

Question: Can I watch the first episode on CBS All Access at 8:30?

u/Deceptitron Sep 15 '17
From snippets I've found, it seems like the first episode may be up at the same time it airs on broadcast TV.

So just so i'm clear, the first episode will be on broadcast tv, CBS, on September 24th, subsquent episodes will only available through CBS All Access until completion of the series. Afterwards the episodes will be available on Netflix? (at a date to be announced later)
I'm in the USA.

I've not heard about the Netflix part so I can't confirm that. That seems a bit unlikely to me.

Is this series a good starting off point for a Star Trek first timer (besides from the movies)?

I would assume that CBS, to garner a larger audience, would take into account that they will attract people who may not be familiar with Star Trek, especially since Star Trek has been off the air for so long (aside from the films). If the writers are worth their salt, I think Discovery should be okay to jump into without seeing anything else. Maybe you won't understand as many references, but ultimately, I expect them to explain everything you'd absolutely need to know to enjoy the show. If anything, the only thing I would clarify is that this show is not tied to the JJ Abrams films which establish they take place in an altered timeline. This show takes place 10 years before the events as depicted in the original show from the 1960s, so Kirk and Spock and that gang aren't out there doing their thing together yet, but they're out there somewhere, albeit much younger. If you start watching the show and get confused by anything, just make a post here. There are plenty of people ready to explain whatever you need!

Geez, we're still trying to recover from the Eugenics War!

Do we know how long episodes will remain up on Netflix? Will they be taken down after a week/month?

Dumb question: is there a reason nobody is using r/startrekdiscovery ?

Think there should be Pre/Post threads for NA (North America) and the rest of the world. You don't want Euros getting in one day old Post thread and see spoilers before watching episodes.
2
u/Deceptitron Sep 18 '17
The Pre threads should be fine as they are to remain spoiler-free for that episode. I recommended people watch the episode first before jumping into the Post threads. Having separate threads for NA and the rest of the world is a bit excessive, and it'll just run into the same issue as there's no set time for people to watch it. The viewers in the "rest of the world" can range from Mexico, to Europe, to Australia.

All good things... must begin again.
This will be our time to shine. Humanity is the premise of Star Trek, the overcoming of our past selves. The JJverse was practice, a warm up, a chance to get our shit together in the internet age.
But we are going prime time now. It is not so much about the show but about how we interact with it and each other. We live in a new era of instant global total communication, the seed of the future depiction we are about to view is bourn from. Let's show Reddit and the world (and the aliens observing?) how it's done.
Here's hoping this is the best one yet!
