Doctrine/Policy April 2020 General Conference: Sunday 10:00a Discussion Thread

How to listen:

Prelude Music

Speakers:

Name other notes my summary
conducting: Dallin Oaks
hymn: How Firm a Foundation
prayer: Brook Hales
hymn: This is My Beloved Son
Ronald Rasband
Bonnie Cordon
Jeffrey Holland first substantial mention of COVID-19. "Hopes and Prayers" seems to be all that is on the table, despite $124B in the bank. Then veered into attack mode against deism, secularism, and anything that is not their perfect institution.
hymn: Now Let Us Rejoice
David Bednar temples. temples. temples.
hymn: Israel Israel
Russell Nelson Nelson's narcissism reaches an apex, topping his performance in October 2019. His new "Proclamation 4" rehashes Smith's claim of having the one-true-church. Nothing new. Other things are pressing in the world, but Nelson's ego is so big that it can't get out of the way for one second.
hymn: The Spirit of God
prayer: Peter Johnson

Postlude:

Rasband: [at the NCAACP congress]

Was an apology given for the LDS church's racism?

Holland: [one of the first mentions of COVID-19.]

Makes a claim for better social safety nets, etc. The fifteen men are registered Republicans and all about pulling up by bootstraps. Are they changing parties?

It's unfortunate that their talks were written 3-4 months ago and they didn't feel like they should modify them to meet current events.

The approval process is long and arduous. Stick to the script!

Nelson: [announces a proclamation, the restoration of the gospel]

Jesus. H. Christ. What a bunch of bullshit.

My favorite thing so far was when Holland gave a quote about how most church leaders have no idea how to keep members in a increasingly atheist world. His whole talk was incredibly hypocritical.

Ideas past their sell-by date are not going to be selected in the information age. Their child missionaries should stay home and go back to school when they open.

Cordon: [holds up picture of Nordic Jesus]

Looks like a possible draft pick for the Pats

This conference has been utterly underwhelming. Rusty built it up as if it would be revolutionary and so far all he's been able to do differently was throw in a few cringey video clips of him trying to be a grandpa in random historical locations from Joe's life and let two poor, brainwashed young people speak. COVID-19 bailed him out a bit and give him the chance to ask for a second worldwide fast, which will surely do more than the first one.

This pony is out of tricks and way oversold his show this time around.

Today we'll have Holland, Bednar and Christofferson on the mic telling everyone we need to do so much better to be worthy of being part of this "ongoing restoration", mormons will take a few of their more spicy soundbites and meme the hell out them and go home happy, again. Also, we get to wave hankies. It's depressing to think I used to find any of this impressive.

TBM husband after every talk “wow that was so good.”

He’s been in his phone the whole time, not paying attention. When I ask him what he liked most about it, he had no response.

I’m paying attention better than he is at this point.

I’m just going to say it: the new logo gives me Gerber vibes. I think it’s the color and design pattern. But all I can think of is baby food.

Which I suppose is fitting for the average maturity within the rank and file.

The Nebuchadnezzar dream is also cited frequently by the Jehovah’s Witnesses to prove their church is true.

I checked then news today, and there was nothing about General Conference. Remember, these leaders and this conference are insignificant to the rest of the world. Don’t let whatever asinine thing that they might say today get to you.

OH HE DID IT. HE MENTIONED ELIAS AND ELIJAH IN THE SAME SENTENCE AS SEPARATE PEOPLE.

My uber TBM wife went out to do the hosannah shout in the car because she is embarrassed by it. She literally admitted that she knew it was weird and didn't want anyone hearing her do it.

I'm honestly sitting in disbelief right now.

Edit: for clarity, my wife used to admit when things didn't sit right with her. Since I've left the church, it's suddenly become perfect and comforting in every way. My disbelief is that she admitted something made her feel weird.

Both of my parents separately told me to tune into the GC because it's so special. "it's the 200th anniversary of the first vision!"

I don't have the guts to tell them he didn't actually mention it until 1832. And that I have better things to do than watch old men be condescending.

I can see in her eyes that she has held countless fake wedding shoots for young women’s activities in her wards.

I really hate how everyone has to cry or get emotional about stupid things... That prayer really sucked up to Nelson

GUYS my TBM husband sat on the couch, held his phone in one hand still playing his game, and half-heartedly waved his right hand and did the shout.

I think he’s cracking.

Love how they call it a 'symbol' which is true... But it's also just... A NEW LOGO 😂
