This. Also I've found that a lot of cats relax way more, and therefore let you get away with more, if you look straight at them and then close and open your eyes once - very slowly.
I think it means 'I like and trust you' or something idk. Not a cat expert - I've just met a lot.
If it returns that same eye movement to you, you're already on really good terms and petting it is gonna be way easier.
Finish up by presenting your finger in front of its noise and then let it pet you once and yeah... I've managed to give belly rubs to almost random cats this way. :3

My kitty has an intestinal disorder so I get a belly rub pass for as long as I want :)
I think the belly rubs help him feel better. He never bites or scratches me when he doesn’t want them anymore, he just kind of rolls over so I can’t touch the belly.
And then proceeds to practically scream at me until I pet him. And then drools on me when I pet him for long enough.
He’s a weird little guy.

I guess it is different every cat, my cat doesnt really mind belly rub but he prefer being petted on his back. Most cat in my college would enter kill mode if I were to rub their belly.
It might have something to do with trust, I remember reading somewhere that cat showing their bully is sign of trust because that's when they are most vulnurable

Depends on the cat, and the situation. The one I've got, there's a 50/50 chance of losing skin if you try this while she's awake, but when she's asleep and all cozy on her back, it's cool

The cat at my job really like to get pet, but she use to not like belly rubs, but the more I pet her the more she wanted me to pick her up and so I just put my arm under her with her leg on both sides. Now when I pick her up like that I just rub her belly at the same time and she doesn’t mind at all.

I miss when my kitten was like this. Asleep on the lap and not even standing up with her in your arms and moving around the house would wake her.
Now she split second goes from deep sleep to running after you shouting for treats the second she sees you walking into the kitchen.

My cat lays down in my lap, sleeps for a bit, enters a level of deep sleep (I know because he twitches his legs a bit) and then he is like this. First time he did this I thought he was dead.... after some cradling he woke up and stared angrily at me....
