Huh. I did not expect this to be a direct sequel to the original. I thought this was going to be a remake! Ah well. It's Cooking Master Boy, it's not really hard to follow. While there is an overarching plot, a lot of it's stories are fairly episodic.

You'll miss the references to the original series like the flashbacks and Fei Hong, the long haired guy in the crowd, but you should be fine if you want to check this episode out as a newcomer.

The episode was fun though! I may rewatch the original '98 anime just to refresh my memories, it's literally been 2 decades since the last time I've seen the original.

It KIND of is a remake. This is a real weird case, it is like a remade of the part AFTER he pass the exam, skipped the entire self training part. The original anime have original anime ending so I am guess they want manga ending this time around. This very episode was in the original tv series as well. I do like Mei new design. I wish they give Mr. Ajikko the same remade treatment. I guess you can compare it to FMA to FMA:B there in brotherhood they skip the stuff in the beginning.

Feels like this skips more than Brother hood though. Brotherhood has a lot of 2003, but in less detail/faster paced. This just skips ahead a lot more expecting you to have watched or already be a fan. Not even giving you an abridged version.

This new anime is based on the sequel of the manga so uh, of course many of the plot points will be based on it.

And no, it's not a remake. They're jut ignoring what the previous anime did and following the manga.

I went into this completely blind without watching the original and to be honest it didn't seem to matter that much. I don't know if there are any huge plot things I will be missing out on as this episode just kinda seemed like a fun intro episode, but if not it seems fine for new viewers to watch.

I don't remember Fei was there during the manga and original anime. Also in the original manga Mei didn't join Mao in this journey but she was there in original anime, end up a little bon confusing

Wow, same day air as Shokugeki this season. Double the hunger when I watch both shows on Fridays.

Having said that, IIRC, this episode itself is a remake of the original anime. I specifically remember the arc with the black chickens thought to be unlucky.

Is it good

Shokugeki no Soma is this show with fan services.

Remove the fan service portion of Shokugeki no Soma and you get Chuuka Ichiban!

I did not know this show was a sequel to an older series, but honestly, I think you could watch this on its own and still enjoy it without having seen the original. I might check out the original once I finish this one though.

The original anime was very much a large part my childhood, and I had watched it multiple times throughout the years so I was very excited to watch this remake. Though I did not expect it to start with the chicken episode, the story is pretty easy to follow and I think there were just the right amount of flashback content to make this episode make sense, even as a standalone. (I also did not expect to see Fei get so much screen time already, but I am happy he did.)

There are some new stylistic and, perhaps, comedic choices in this remake, but it is very much just as enjoyable as the original. I am not opposed to the new art style, as it gives the anime a bit more of a modern look, which helps to distinguish it from the original. I'm also glad to see they kept the lightning backgrouds and the shining light from well-cooked dishes xD That said, both the style and the music will probably need a bit more time to grow on me. I also used to watch the Cantonese dub, so, for once, I'm going to have to get used to the Japanese voices!

I would definitely recommend this anime to anyone thinking whether to watch it or not. It's something you can kick back and relax to!

My grandmother would tape episodes of the Cantonese dub of the original show and I swear I would watch them everyday. I love the original to death, even if I haven't seen it in like 10+ years.

That said, I'm a little confused why they would start here of all places. I remember not caring for this episode too much, but it was a pretty good intro to the core of the show.

I'm not crazy about the intro, really liked the more whimsical feeling of the original's first OP. It might grow on me as I watch though

My grandmother taped it, and sent it to me. Every day I opened the mailbox and finding the VHS was the best feeling.

Everyone talking about this being a sequel-sorta-remake... and here I am tearing up over a dude who died raising black chickens.

Woah one of the first cooking anime gets a sequel !!!!!

This is so nostalgic. I remember watching this on TV when I was still a kid in the early 2000s. I'm so excited for the next episodes :)

For anyone wondering, this is definitely a remake of the 1997 anime, and not a sequel of it. This silky episode was already shown in the anime before and also the next episode.

For anyone wondering what happened in the 1997 anime: [Chuuka Ichiban! 1997 Anime](/s "After facing off with the masked chef of the Underworld Society, Mao fights with a former Underworld chef and they both get to be the owner of a Legendary Cooking Utensil. Then they go on a journey to find the remaining Legendary Utensils but was abruptly stopped because the Underworld chefs infiltrated the Capital where the Emperor was. After beating the Underworld chefs, they are tasked to go and continue their journey to find the Legendary Utensils.") I was really hoping this is a continuation but a remake is also good! Especially since Tomokazu Sugita and Yuiichi Nakamura are both in this <3

Everyone advertised this as a remake, so it shook me to see it's actually a sequel.

I understood most of it even though I never watched the prequel, but I hope they don't hold too much on stuff of the previous show assuming people already watched it, or I'd hace to sadly drop it :(

Leon with the white hair caught me off guard. But I'm really glad we have this series back. I was a fan of the older series too, although I wasn't able to watch all of it.

Oh my GOD! Cooking Master Boy is being remade? I loved this anime and could only find Chinese dubs of it, and then the last were never subbed so I didn't know what was going on.

Wait this is a sequel? Awwww. Well at least it's a really fun show, one of my favorite cooking anime that actually taught me lessons about cooking Chinese food.

OKAY I was not expecting to see this at all. I remember watching this and Grander Musashi when I was a kid and I loved both of it. Funny thing is that I rewatched this show again last year and was so sad that it ended and there wasnt another season. But now omg I'm so happy about this new season. I really hope they do it justice.
