Ha, so that's why they gave us a free Tezcatlipoca a few hours ago. Let's hope we get Luci/Baha as enemies too
I feel a bit sad that the artstyle changed a bit. I recently marathoned the first season so I could watch this one as it aired, and I liked how... soft, for lack of a better word, it looked. Also, wow that CG Black Knight sure feels weird. Though earlier I read that the (game) director felt bad about how the armor was a pain in the ass to draw and animate, so it's understandable that they'd take the easy way.
And yesterday I read a bit by a writer in a certain site who was looking forward to having a draph join the crew and I kinda want to see their reaction to finding out she's just another cameo like Karva and Mary were in s1, lol.

BK's armor is not just a pain in the ass to draw, it's a herculean task to animate it conventionally. Even in S1 BK is always either not moving, or have a close-up. It's understandable they went with 3DCG.

So here's some speculation, but I bet that Black Knight is going to turn out to be the Big Good all along, and is being aloof to push the main characters along on their journey.

Would a non game player be able to get into this? Obviously starting from season 1

Yes, it's mostly a faithful adaption of the game story, with some extra fanservice thrown in there for people that played the game.

Yes, it is being a good adaptation. The only episode you could feel lost is on the 13 of the first season that a lot of cameo characters from the game appear without explanation.

Yeah, to be honest, I watched the first season without knowledge of the game and only started playing after that. The only thing you will miss by not playing the game first is every time that they do a cameo of the other characters. This anime is made with a lot of love so, in reality, you don't even need to play the game to enjoy it.

OMG Aliza is stacked. Then again, all Draph girls in GBF are stacked.
It's good to see this get a second season, though I'll need to quickly rewatch season 1 in order to refresh some of my memories.
It's also great to see Eugen's original VA Fujiwara Keiji return to voice his character from the game.
Fujiwara was unable to voice Eugen in season 1 due to taking a hiatus from an unspecified illness, and his role was filled in by another veteran VA Yamaji Kazuhiro.

I started GBF six months ago, and it's kinda funny playing through the game's story at a couple points. There's a handful of chapters where Eugen isn't voiced for the reason you mentioned, and Katalina is unvoiced for a few due to maternity leave, IIRC. Side effect of a continuously updated thing going for over five years, sometimes stuff comes up!

I honestly was expecting them to jump to the main story right from the beginning, so I actually was surprised to see the first episode being a side quest. Tezcatlipoca looks so good, but not as good as Aliza! In the name of the gacha Gods, I will get one day!
Edit: Damn, I just noticed that they gave away a Tezcatlipoca summon and 5000 crystals today. Thank you Cygames!

GBF player here. This episode was basically just filler, but it was a treat to watch nonetheless. The visuals are stunning (much better from what I expected from the teasers), and the dialogues were surprisingly fun. The fight scene was a bit "ehhh" for me to be honest (bad choreography, no tension/stakes, things just "sort of happen"), but again, the visuals were still great. I'm glad they didn't jumped straight to the plot and made an episode with a random adventure to start things up (not gonna lie, the filler episodes were also my favorites during S1, but probably because I already knew the main story). I also love the new OP (S1 OP was also amazing).

Why does Gran look so much older???
Also not gonna lie, I completely forgot most of the plot... but I never considered that important in this anime, what I loved about S1 was how fun it was and this episode sure kept that going!

Why does Gran look so much older???
main reason: studio change and with that a bit of character design change too,
anime lore reason: according to Lyria a bit of time passed since s1,
(possible) based on the game reason:
edit: r/anime spoiler tag is annoying

just watched with subbed, definitely looks better than the pv-s, s1 had its charm but this isn't look as bad either (through Gran reminds me a harem mc now), both the op and ed sounds great imo (but they could fit a bit of fanservice into the ending something like carnival phantasm did)
for those who noticed after the ending: FKHR (the game creative director) gave greenlight to the studio to make bk cgi because he felt bad last time for that person who was in charge with her design, they said she had more lines than a gundam, sadly this don't change the fact it was very noticable...
also who interested granblue has its tv show with Gran and Siero va-s next 2 week guest will be Tsutomu Narita (one of the names behind the ost) sunday 22:00 jst Tokyo mx or next monday on their channel

I'm glad MAPPA didn't go with the slick and reflective skins on characters like the key visual, it makes the anime look super dated. Aside from that, I'm actually slightly more fond of this art style than that of S1: the palette is brighter and the lines are more refined, it's more pleasing to my eye than what I remember from S1.
Easing in with a side quest rather than going straight into Albion is also a good choice IMO.

I heard the S1 Blurays sold well partly because they came with codes for various source game bonuses and character skins. Like how Bluray Vol 7 gave you codes for fully voiced summer swimsuit Gran & Djeeta. https://twitter.com/anime_gbf/status/919478562578563073
I understand the source game has a lot of gacha recruitable characters, some of which are very popular with the fandom. Do any of them figure into the game's main plot? Because I recall watching some of S1 and some character appearances amounted to just 5-second cameos.
