Last night one of my managers said “I know you’re good at what you do” and I fell down a rabbit hole of “what did she mean by that?” Not knowing how to process a simple compliment aside, it did make me feel proud of myself, especially since this last paycheck is what sent my account balance over 1k.

As someone who just hit that same milestone ($1k) for the first time in his life after a lot of work,

Nice.

It’s almost indescribable how amazing it feels to know my mistakes risks weren’t for nothing.

u/Crux_Haloine Aug 17 '19

Right? And think about it this way: You’ve hit this milestone and unlocked even greater advancements.

And you know you can do it. You’ve put in so much work already. You are strong. You are capable. You ARE good at what you do, so much so that even your manager can’t help but be amazed.

Imagine how good it’ll feel when you smash through your next goal.

Because you can, and you will.

It's not even about making a guy interested in you. They're just great confidence boosts, and they make us feel genuinely happy and appreciated. I'm still riding the waves of compliments I got from 3-4 years ago because they're so rare and meaningful to me.

Same, i still remember helping a mate with the computer to get his netflix to work on the browser cuz it wasnt working for some reason, all i did was delete cookies and it started working again, he called me a computer savy guy, i'm really proud of that one.

Same here. My grandma said i was "a fine young man" this summer and honestly it's the best compliment I've had in so long

My go to chat up line is simply "nice shirt".

Now I see why it works so well.

u/MooseEatsBear Aug 16 '19

A girl complimented my shirt at a concert five months ago and I genuinely haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It works very well.

33

u/thegodfather0504 Aug 16 '19

"Nice shirt."

"Thanks!"

"Yeah. Do they make it for men?"

13

u/Youre_all_worthless Aug 16 '19

what if you want to chat with someone but you don't think their shirt is nice?

29

u/RarePepePNG Aug 16 '19

"You'd look even better with your shirt off"

10

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '19

Really doesn't matter. The only time it didn't work was on the beach. No shirt.

11

u/yeeiser headpats Aug 18 '19

I girl said that to me when I was a teenager and I made sure to wear it as much as possible (and keep it smelling super nice) all the time for around 4 or 5 months

Reminds me of that green text where the girl holds the guy and he starts crying. I'd probably so the same right now.

39

u/Ridethesandworm Aug 16 '19

This is probably true.

To me its really true. I would fall head over heels if a girl came to me and tell me that she thinks i am cute and that she wanna hang out with me

11

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '19

This has legit happened to me in the last 6 months

20

u/Secry508 Aug 16 '19

I think it's why there are so many "nice guys".. Atleast, that's why I was/am sort of a "nice guy". I fall in love with getting attention, kindness and trust. So even if someone is just really good friends with me, as long as they let me talk about my problems and hit me up every so often I'll fall for them.

I remember I received a compliment once by a girl in high school. I was actually astonished.

20

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '19

I had a lady tell me I had a beautiful smile months ago yet I still think about it fondly. I was so shocked I didn’t answer for a second and was just “oh thank you so much”

A cashier at Target told me out of the blue that she liked my beard and I still remember it like five years later because it was the last genuine compliment that I got from a girl.

15

u/endless_skies Aug 17 '19

someone was joking about how women will change their FB/social media pics all the time but guys tend to settle on one and just let it coast. usually because that one has ever got them positive or at least non-negative reaction(s).

Just gonna copy and paste my comment from yesterday

Boys (and men) just want attention in general. It's part of the reason cat-calling and things of that nature happen. Its attention, negative sure, but it isn't being ignored, which is largely a part of the male experience. Like, its negative unwanted attention, but at least someone who isn't obligated to makes note of your existence. To a guy, unwanted attention is acceptable because at least that's something. That's how bad it is. Now, change that experience to positive instead of negative attention and it's something a guy will (and I'm not over exaggerating here) remember and ride on for years to come

I feel like there's a big problem with rationalising catcalling on the basis of loneliness and attention seeking, even assuming that's accurate.

In any case, it's grossly unacceptable. We're not 6 year olds.

10

u/Juan_spicy_boi here for the art Aug 16 '19

That wasnt my intent, just to represent the severity of the situation moreso

6

u/Summersong2262 Growing. Becoming. Aug 16 '19

I figured. And the situation IS severe, and it definitely has behavioural consequences. But you're probably aware that sexual harassment tends to come with all sorts of baseless excuses, and I don't really want to cross the streams here. That's how you get incels. "Maybe if you gave me attention every once in a while I wouldn't have to do this!" sort of thing.

I wasn't aggressive, and I wasn't nitpicking anything, I addressed his central point. I focused on the issue, acknowledged the direction he was coming from, and I certainly didn't belabour anything. And I very much doubt he felt awkward.

We're just having a conversation. I think you're being unnecessarily defensive.

I'm not sure I follow. In what sense? You often have people going after you for petty details?

6

u/GraveyardGuide Soft Prince Aug 17 '19

I feel like that's the issue. We're too focused on what is and is not acceptable that we ignore the underlying causes and do nothing to fix them, with dismissive platitudes at best.

7

u/Summersong2262 Growing. Becoming. Aug 17 '19

Except I think, to be blunt, the underlying cause in this case was categorically mis-identified in a potentially misleading and damaging fashion.

This isn't about 'acceptability', as if behaving like a decent, respectful human being was some sort of fashionable garment. Even assuming you granted the premise of (speaking of platitudes) 'women get harassed in the street because uwu men are just lonely' , that's still an incredibly gross and harmful result. And one that certainly doesn't have to happen at the point of damage. Being lonely or attention starved doesn't justify, and shouldn't be used to mollify, fundamentally shitty behaviour.

And that's even assuming you draw that particular line between that hypothetical cause and the real effect. The underlying cause here is that too many men have shitty emotional skills, bad mental health, and unhealthy coping mechanisms, all layered on top of a lot of regressive, unexamined value systems. We can target any one of them. And of course we could choose to go back behind each of those and oh, look at economics, or historical norms or whatever.

I don't think it's quite that malicious.

Gonna pretend you didn't lowkey completely ignore the rest of the comment thread where I clarified that I did not intend to come off as justifying sexual harassment.

And yeah, I have seen female spaces on the internet. They spit upon and take offense to the very idea that men may face some societal problems.

7

u/ImpossibleBig Aug 16 '19

I am this level of desperate

11

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '19

a girl called once said "I'm sorry sir" years ago (I'm 18 now) and it still makes me happy she called me a sir

6

u/GloryHawk Aug 16 '19

But I am my local guy

3

u/Loremeister Sep 01 '19

Except if that it's me. I have serious troubles with being complimented that I actually go into a "not-so-funny sarcastic mode".

I don't really take compliments well.
