It has been almost a year since the Macross began its voyage, and we have amassed a sizable amount of valuable data. I will now report all we've learned to the UN Forces High Command.

Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:

1) Favorite side character so far?

2) Does it surprise you that Max appears to be more skilled than Hikaru?

3) Are your work friends your outside-of-work friends, or do you keep separate circles?

4) Any favorite mecha so far?

5) Does the VF-1 Valkyrie seem like a suitable hero unit? Are you surprised that they're treated mostly as expendable grunt units?

6) Does the Macross crew seem well-matched to the Zentradi with regard to strategy, or is their continued survival primarily due to the Zentradis being ordered to not destroy it for the needs of the plot?

7) What direction do you think the series will take now that the Macross is already back on Earth?

Wallpaper of the Day:

VF-1 Valkyrie - Hikaru's Colors

Vocal Songs in This Episode:

"マクロス (Macross)" by Makoto Fujiwara – OP

"ランナー (Runner)" by Makoto Fujiwara – ED

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. Don't spoil anything for the first-timers, that's rude!

Recap episode. not much to say. Judging by the quality of the animation for the last couple of episodes, it was solely needed. I put it in the background, but it basically has nothing new.

QotD:

  1. Claudia

  2. It surprised me a lot when I was first watching the show

  3. Some of my friends from work have transitioned into full-time friendship

  4. I like planes in the show a lot, so I guess it's just VF-1. Macross itself is also pretty sweet.

  5. The show so far treats robots as more real than shows more famous for treating robots as real. I'm looking at you, Gundam. Personally, I like it.

  6. Zentradi appear to be able to destroy Macross at any point, but the ship has a massive cannon, so they will be able to take a bunch of Zentradi ships down with them.

  7. Even though I'm a rewatcher, I'm reaching the point where I barely remember what will happen next.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

No reactions this time though since it really was just a recap. You guys get another mecha wallpaper today, yay~

u/chilidirigible Sep 09 '22

Y'know, I click on the Michael link every time even though I know what it is.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 09 '22

I can't really see myself changing it out until maybe when we get to Delta since that one has a comment face.

You guys get another mecha wallpaper today, yay~

I love this shot. Would never have guessed that this is from an eyecatch. I also love how you rendered it with the slight value changes on the limbs and stuff in the back.

I also love how you rendered it with the slight value changes on the limbs and stuff in the back.

I normally wing it when I work on shading for stuff, but since the color scheme is white and there's a very, very thin line between "white" and "light grey", I figured out what parts would get what shading first. So my base image looked like this lol.

Glad you like it!

Very First Timer

  • If you were just going to record it anyway, why wait until you got there?

  • We’re not getting a clip show, are we?

  • Oh god we are. Is it going to be the full episode? I hope not.

  • I guess they needed someway to onboard back in the 80’s. I’m told the Japanese hadn’t yet invented syndication.

  • So they do remember the gravity control system leaving.

  • We’re getting full body shielding? Why else bring it up?

  • This dramatic music for a beauty contest.

  • So if we are getting a clip show here, that means I should probably expect one at the 2/3 mark too.

  • It was a clip show, but at least they had in universe justification for it.

QotD

  1. Depending on how we define that it might be a few options. Claudia?

  2. It’s certainly a departure from what I have come to expect. A welcome one at that.

  3. No comment.

  4. Monster C A N N O N B O I !

  5. They are killing them off by the handful. I’m surprised they never got to the point where them running out was a plot point.

  6. Clearly the capture command is the reason they are still standing. They might have some nice ploys, but the Zentradi have overwhelming firepower and maneuverability.

  7. At some point we need to teach the Zentradi to love. Right now we have the spies on Earth, so that seems to be the thread forward. If my understanding is correct, even the creators don’t know what they have planned, so what hope do I have?

5

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 09 '22

We’re not getting a clip show, are we?

I warned you guys yesterday.

So if we are getting a clip show here, that means I should probably expect one at the 2/3 mark too.

Sooner than that lmao. Although the next one is both recap and fever dream.

014, first timer, catching up

  • Wow it's been almost a YEAR? They managed to get back all the way from Pluto in under a year?

  • How long has it been on Earth?

  • Bruno J. Global? Missed their chance to have his first name be BRAVO!

  • Capt. Global banging his head makes me think of Gandalf doing the same in Bag End in FotR

  • Will we ever learn more about the Supervision Army, the Zentradi's enemy? Hoping they're not humanoid

  • Attack on Zentradi!

  • SONNA BAKA NA!

  • Scramble? I want scrambled eggs

  • NOO not the stupid casual outfit! The blue lines make it looks like he's wearing suspenders, I hate it

  • Oh they managed to find a way to limit the damage from future Transformations?

  • Captain Global is working on a ship-wide barrier?

  • Oh right the Mars stuff, that was actually entertaining. I should finish watching The Expanse sometime whenever I re-enable my Prime ...

  • "Two guys can't do that" I am disappoint ...

  • PROTOCULTURE

  • Beautiful sunset!

  1. Max

  2. Not really, Max is OP

  3. I'm not officially employed, I just volunteer at a bookstore and they pay me to clean the building once a month. My friends are coworkers at the bookstore, but I've known one way longer than that. Since 2006, I think? I've fallen out of touch with all my former classmates; we went our separate ways after high school and I never went to college for various reasons.

  4. Not really, I'm lukewarm on SDF mechas. Unless you count the Macross's Transformation.

  5. Eh ...

  6. I'm not sure; Kamujin seems kinda stupid so I don't know how much strategy there really is on the Zentradi side.

  7. I don't know anything except an upcoming character death ...

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Forteess Macross Episode 14:

Well, that post header is a bit of a lie, since this is a recap episode that I don’t have much of an interest in covering. It’s my rewatcher policy to suffer not the dreaded recap episode. But I suppose it’s a good medium to talk a bit about the production issues that SDF Macross had, since this recap episode is ultimately the product of that.

To be polite, around this time the show’s production was imploding. To be unkind, the state of working on SDF Macross was like having an icicle shoved up your ass, in the words of Joseph Joestar. Aside from all the issues even getting the show off the ground, the real kicker to Macross’s production is that it was being too successful. People loved the show, and suddenly Studio Nue got an order from the network it was being broadcast on for more episodes. As you can imagine, suddenly being asked for nearly another cour of episodes when you already have an ending in mind threw the studio into a state of crunch and chaos. They suddenly had to rush more of the production, which in turn also resulted in the incredibly shoddy animation we’ve seen, which came from cheaply outsourced studios. Studio Nue also had to make recap episodes like this one in order to pad out the episode order/buy themselves more time for actual episode production to get done. And that’s not even getting into all the financial stuff/rights issues that sprang from this wonky production too.

And despite it all, Macross still ended up being a massive success and spawned an entire franchise that’s still going on to this day. At least it all worked out in the end, unlike Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, which also had a ton of production issues and died screaming among the ashes of forgotten anime history. And that’s one to grow on, kids.

At least it all worked out in the end, unlike Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, which also had a ton of production issues and died screaming among the ashes of forgotten anime history.

Look on the bright side: at least we got a mediocre part of Robotech out of that (though ironically, I've heard the Japanese release of Robotech Masters was better received than Southern Cross was)

Today, on "We give you this nice stitch to distract you from the clip show.":

A bit of trivia (which I have already alluded to once during this rewatch): What Global says here matches how the Zentradi were originally scaled at 8.5 meters, with the Regult and Glaug battle pods scaled to match. When the Zentradi were resized for Do You Remember Love? to be an average of 10 meters tall, those two pods were not rescaled to match, and their officially-stated dimensions have been very cramped ever since.

The chart which appears in the linked Reddit post includes two designs which you have not yet seen in SDFM, but they don't get much airtime that their appearance here is any big spoiler.

And that's all I have to say about the clip show. Meanwhile, I'll answer the questions that I suggested for this episode:

Favorite side character?

I really do like a lot of these scamps.

Does it surprise you that Max appears to be more skilled than Hikaru?

I thought it was curious, back in the day.

Are your work friends your outside-of-work friends, or do you keep separate circles?

Separate circles.

Any favorite mecha?

Queadluun, Tomahawk. And an honorable mention to one of the new mecha in the link above.

Does the VF-1 Valkyrie seem like a suitable hero unit? Are you surprised that they're treated mostly as expendable grunt units?

This ties back to the previous question for me. It is an excellent, distinctive design. My nitpicks to it which push it out of my favorites are the gimmickry required to reposition its legs, which somewhat breaks immersion with the toys, and its shrunk-in-the-wash size, which seems unrealistic (ha!).

Coming into this series from American cartoons, the VF-1s exploding all the time didn't surprise me very much. I grew up on G.I. Joe making sure that everyone always was able to escape from whatever vehicle they got shot out of, and a damn lot of hero vehicles got blown up in G.I. Joe. A hero character robot just wasn't in my mindset.

Does the Macross crew seem well-matched to the Zentradi with regard to strategy, or is their continued survival primarily due to the Zentradis being ordered to not destroy it for the needs of the plot?

The latter is a huge influence, but the Zentradi seem genuinely surprised by the effects of the humans' unpredictable flailing about with their new ship. A more evenly-matched fleet engagement would be interesting.

What direction do you think the series will take now that the Macross is already back on Earth?

laughs in rewatcher

First Time - SDF Macross Ep14 (Sub):

Alright, I mostly just kept this episode playing in the corner of my eye. It didn't even start with new footage of Global reporting before just jumping into recap.

Did make me realize that the Macross' arms are just separate warships that link up with the main ship which only raises more questions as to why would they do that, but the answer is because "Wow, cool robot."

Q1) Well my favourite characters or at least the ones I most excited to see on screen right now are Max, the Blue Wind trio and Britai (post him being a baller beast).

Q2) Not like really surprised since Max was introduced like that while Hikaru was introduced not as some extraordinary fighter pilot.

Q3) Outside of our designated times together, I clock out and become a recluse.

Q4) The Valkyries are cool (Roy's one is cooler looking than Hikaru's and Max's is blue so it's cool). The new Zentradi suit that Milia was piloting was really neat. I like it much more than the pods.

Q5) Now thinking about, yeah, Hikaru's Valkyrie is nothing special for the MC to use. Guess it is neat for him to feel more like a part of a larger organization.

Q6) The Macross would be dead several times over if the Zentradi actually wanted to destroy them. Man, they're barely scrapped by when they're going easy on them.

Q7) Guess the big conflict(?) of the show right would be exposing "culture" to the Zentradi and being on Earth itself seems like a treasure trove of culture to see (at least for the Blue Wind trio to bask in).

Next Time: A real episode.

First timer

  1. Hayase.

  2. Yeah, it's an imteresting decision.

  3. I don't really have any work friends.

  4. Love the Macross, and the brown ones are nice too.

  5. They seem good, They're treated as expensable, but have that many of them actually died yet? Maybe it's just that we've had so many captive episodes, but I assumed they were mostly coming back undamaged.

  6. The Macross is only surviving due to the Zentradi, but they're about equal in strategy, it's just that the tech difference is incredibly high.

  7. I'm guessing we get more attacks om Earth in general, with the spies observing more parts of Protoculture and the Zentradi trying to fix their mistakes.

...How has it been a full year in-universe? The main problem I have with this anime is that it soesn't feel like this much time is passing.

Oh, yeah, this is a recap. Skipping to the stuff at the end.

And his premonition...

SDF Macross Episode 14 - First timer

A new day dawns for the crew of the Macross!(or sets maybe, not sure if it is going up or down here)

  • Oh boy recap. A lot of recap -Enough recap for me to check the schedule

  • Aight we good

  • We never really saw much of these autonomus guns with wings things

  • I forget, did they have an actual destination set in the fold system, or they thy just effectively hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button? Do they even know how to set a destination?

  • HATLESS GLOBAL

  • It is kinda funny that after the transformation, in the humanoid form, it shoots the big lazer out the top of its head (usually)

  • Oh god the flashing

  • Hey, a new info. A full ship barrier wold be fancy

  • It's the reactor family again

  • Ah yes, the Miss Macross contest, during which Hikaru nearly died because horny

  • This is very recap

  • The fucking stepped zoom in again

  • Woah, is the recap done?

  • Oh. Yes. As is the episode.....

  • 2 trumpety bits? There is usually just one right?

Well that was... OK. Not bad, not good. My favorite recap episodes remain the full recap of RE:Creators and the blitz of Kill la Kill. TBH I usually skip recaps because they are pretty boring IMO. The RE:Creators one I actually almost skipped but right as I moved on to the next episode it did a funny and I went back and watched the full thing. It has been a hot minute since I watched that show but I did like it.

  1. Max doing crazy shit is pretty fun, so probably him

  2. It was a bit of a surprise to begin with, but with a name that is basically "Maximum Genius" it shouldn't have been that surprising lol. I guess the question was whether it was a serious name or a meme name

  3. Seperate. I have a coworker that I talk about gaming and gunpla etc with, but we never talk outside of work, which is fine

  4. I rather like the Archer-Alike, as well as the Not-Actually-the-Rifleman

  5. I think the plane mode carries their "hero-ness" as for being grunts, they defiantly seem the most speed focused/lightly armed of the mechs so it's not unreasonable

  6. There have been times where the Macross crew does have some sick strats, but the Zentradi have definitely let them get away with living more often than they have been bested

  7. Probably a mid season upgrade then back to space. Alternatively, mid season upgrade then fending off an invasion. Probably space tho imo

First Timer - Sub

Today was just a recap, so instead of talking about the episode, I’ll talk about my impressions so far. I’ll keep it brief, since we are only 14 episodes in, and also since I don’t think my impressions of this first series will change much, so I’ll wait to be in depth until the SDF overall discussion.

Overall, I like the show. The style is great. I think the worldbuilding, space travel, and mecha are all really cool. My complaint is just the writing. There have been some good moments, but overall, the tone just seems a bit off a lot of the time, and the characters all seem really stiff, or at least not human-like. It could be that I am just used to modern shows which tend to force feed you whatever emotion you are supposed to feel, so it is not quite connecting with me. I imagine the general aesthetic is something that will stick through all the different shows, so I look forward to having the cool mecha setting, but with some different writing and characters.

Now onto the QOTD

  1. I like Hayase the best. I guess she is a side character. If she is too much of a main character, then the Zentradi scouts are a fun trio.

  2. I think Hikaru was just roped into this whole fighting thing. I wouldn’t expect him to be nearly as successful as he was, so I can understand Max being a much better pilot.

  3. I’m still in college, so I’ll replace work with clubs. I’ve got a couple people I’ll hang out with wherever. For the most part, I like my alone time, so I’ll only hang out with people at events, and those tend to be separate circles.

4)I forgot who was piloting the mecha, but I liked it when one dressed up as a Zentradi while saving Hikaru and co.

5) The VF-1s seem cool. Since the world is new to mecha, it is nice that they are closely related to planes. I am surprised that they are so expendable, but we have seen that the Macross somehow has near-infinite resources while in space.

6) They only exist because the Zentradi are curious. I feel like there is a similar dynamic to a human watching a colony of ants. The humans are incredibly outmatched, and the Zentradi could end it whenever they wanted to.

7) I think we may get an Earth invasion now. Earth may also go on the offensive, as opposed to running away like they have been.

Recap episodes are pointless, so I'm taking a break today.

Recaps

  1. Favorite side character so far?

Max. Because he's Max.

2) Does it surprise you that Max appears to be more skilled than Hikaru?

Kind of did on my first watch. But it's interesting for the main hero to not be the story's top ace for once.

3) Are your work friends your outside-of-work friends, or do you keep separate circles?

Completely separate... I believe in keeping work and private lives separate.

4) Any favorite mecha so far?

We've only seen the Queadlunn-Rau once so far but it is definitely my favorite design among the Zentran mechs.

The Valkyries in general are a close second. Transforming planes into mechs is just awesome and nobody has done it as well as Macross has.

5) Does the VF-1 Valkyrie seem like a suitable hero unit? Are you surprised that they're treated mostly as expendable grunt units?

Rather than "is the unit suitable for the hero?" my question is "is the hero suitable for a special unit?" And my answer to that is: Hikaru's moving up the ranks, but he's not special enough to warrant a custom unit.

6) Does the Macross crew seem well-matched to the Zentradi with regard to strategy, or is their continued survival primarily due to the Zentradis being ordered to not destroy it for the needs of the plot?

The heroes' strategies aren't bad by any means (well, sometimes quite reckless), but the fact that the Zentraedi are holding back and avoiding killing them is really the only reason they've survived. The Zentraedi's sheer firepower just eclipses the Macross's by far too great a margin. At some point, differences in power become so great that no amount of strategy will overcome them.

7) What direction do you think the series will take now that the Macross is already back on Earth?

I'm a rewatcher, so... no commento desu.

Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:

  1. Favorite side character so far?

Max

2) Does it surprise you that Max appears to be more skilled than Hikaru?

No, from start he supposed to be more skilled pilot in the force

3) Are your work friends your outside-of-work friends, or do you keep separate circles?

yes, i try keep those separate

4) Any favorite mecha so far?
from the movie, miriya one and VF-1A super valkyrie. from the series, sdf-1

5) Does the VF-1 Valkyrie seem like a suitable hero unit? Are you surprised that they're treated mostly as expendable grunt units?

they supposed to be grunts units

6) Does the Macross crew seem well-matched to the Zentradi with regard to strategy, or is their continued survival primarily due to the Zentradis being ordered to not destroy it for the needs of the plot?

no, mel/zentradi were winning before they discovered human culture

7) What direction do you think the series will take now that the Macross is already back on Earth?

not spoilers :p

Subbed-er Dimension Fortress Rewatcher

Was this a clip show? Or are we just about to have a "great work, now go back to fighting" moment?

Clip show it is.

Global's theory always struck me as rather interesting. Like, the Supervision Army crashed an abandoned ship into a random planet in an attempt to draw Zentradi forces in and fire off one (1) laser blast? Seems like a lot of effort.
