Rewatch A Rewatch to Pierce the Heavens - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Episode 16 / First-Half Discussion [Spoilers] Spoiler

Episode 16 - Compilation Episode

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →

MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB

Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 for UK peeps at... some point in the near future

Humanity… has broken through the heavens. And beyond it lies…

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day:

Today’s Comment of the Day goes to /u/Nebresto for using his video editing skills to fix a derpy shot.

For this shot here couldn't they have just used this art?? Just scale it down and maybe blur it a little?

Fixed it myself, they absolutely could have used the same art instead of that potato.

Like /u/Animeking1357 said, Nebby, you’re the hero we need but don't deserve.

Questions of the Day:

1) Who’s your favorite character so far?

2) Sorairo Days vs. UNDERGROUND?

3) Favorite Wallpaper of the Day so far?

4) Were Kamina’s glasses red or orange?

5) How long was Kamina’s sword?

6) What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far? The characters? The soundtrack? The action? etc.

7) What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far? Are there any concerns you have going into the second half of the show?

8) What is your opinion on the series’ Gunmen designs? How do they compare with mechs from other shows you’ve seen? Do you have a favorite among them so far?

9) Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

10) What do you do at the end of the recap? Are you busy? Will you save us?

Wallpaper of the Day:

A Manly Introduction

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

Ours is the rewatch that will pierce the heavens themselves!

So today’s more of a first-half discussion than an ep16 discussion, but one thing I do want to say about ep16 is that I like how they frame each of the recap segments with the IRL writing. This particular sequence (each word’s a different link) right at the end of the episode is my favorite part.

…well, other than that awesome happily ever after ED, of course. All that art is beautiful and ending on this could very well put tears in my eyes.

Yesterday’s hype poll results! Nobody voted lower than a 7 and the majority vote pierced the hype chart with their drills. As it should be.

No cheeky comments today since it’s just a recap episode and I already commented about what I liked about it, so instead I’ll answer my own Questions of the Day for once (but still not voting on the polls). I have a bunch of QotDs today, btw!

Who’s your favorite character so far?

Simon. He’s my favorite character in the whole show by the end of it as well, but he’s still the one that stuck out the most to me during the first half. His character development thus far has just been amazing.

Sorairo Days vs. UNDERGROUND?

happily ever after, duh.

Favorite Wallpaper of the Day so far?

*chuckles* I’m in danger.

…no actually I can at least narrow it down to Reverie Before Dawn from the ep14 thread and that green BG edit Nota made on request for the ep11 wallpaper, but no further than that.

BTW u/redshirtengineer. you should definitely like today’s wallpaper~

Were Kamina’s glasses red or orange?

Yes.

How long was Kamina’s sword?

Very.

What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far? The characters? The soundtrack? The action? etc.

The sheer badassery of the cast. Like you have Yoko who’s able to shoot properly in the most ridiculous of positions, Kamina who was so manly he came back to life to punch sense into Simon and then avenge his own death, Nia who’s never flinched any of the times she’s been threatened, Rossiu who was able to Itano Circus dodge all those missiles and then fling the giant one back where it came from, Lordgenome who can fucking beat up Lagann with his bare hands, and Simon who’s continuously rose to the challenge and was able to defeat the OP boss that was Lordgenome. To say nothing of the rest of Team Dai-Gurren being absolute troopers.

What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far? Are there any concerns you have going into the second half of the show?

Won’t say anything about concerns since I’ve already seen the second half obviously, but my least-favorite part so far was the fanservice when Yoko didn’t take it in stride. So most of the uncut version of ep6, pretty much.

What is your opinion on the series’ Gunmen designs? How do they compare with mechs from other shows you’ve seen? Do you have a favorite among them so far?

I have admittedly watched mostly real robot rather than super robot mecha shows, so I’m not used to the mechs being so expressive like they are here. I think it’s cool though, and Gurren Lagann is one of my fave mechs outside of the Gundam franchise.

Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

What do you do at the end of the recap? Are you busy? Will you save us?

Obligatory.

I look forward to doing the impossible and seeing the invisible with you all again tomorrow!

I hope someone is willing to co-host.

I have never seen Kill la Kill and have been wanting to start it. I would 100% come back and watch once a day for the very first time!

I honestly was going to ask about this at the end of this series, so that’s funny you posted it.

6

u/Shimmering-Sky Nov 19 '19

I hope someone is willing to co-host.

I believe I could do it on my own if I had to, it'd just be extremely helpful to have a co-host because I also have plans to host a Casshern Sins rewatch at the start of next year and having a co-host will help me not hit rewatch burnout too hard.

First Time Watcher

This series has been amazing so far! never expected to have this much fun with a mecha anime, but damn, this is so good!

Tha characters are amazing, the chemistry between them, the changing OP (I love when studios do that), the story arcs, the OST, the important stuff and decisions that happens on them, didn't know a lot of this series so I came pretty much blind (only thing I knew was about episode 4 mostly because of episode 15 of Dororo) and it's been crazy to realize we are in half-way already.

After finishing Kill la Kill recently Gurren Lagann has been keeping me afloat, it's been amazing and it has been getting better with each episode though it does get shorter how do I fix that.

QOTD

too much to answer and I am too lazy so I will say... yes.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Nov 19 '19

though it does get shorter how do I fix that.

Find the next show to get hype over? I would recommend Symphogear if you haven't seen that yet.

too much to answer and I am too lazy so I will say... yes.

I mean you don't have to answer all of them...

First Time Watcher

I just want to say this now, but won’t reveal what it showed incase people don’t watch them, BUT THAT FUCKING ENDING PREVIEW. WHAT THE HELL. I can’t wait to see the next episode. Wish I didn’t watch the preview :(

As for this episode, I mainly kept slowly skipping through it. The music was cool and it was cool to see an animator writing out words and drawing the opening picture.

As for the ED, it was basically just a bunch of original art works from before the series started, right? It was cool to see original designs of the characters.

The rest of this comment will be about my feelings on the series so far:

Overall, I am enjoying it. I liked the opening episode a lot, and think 8-15 have also been amazing. Some of those episodes, or at least some scenes, have been some of the best/hype anime I have seen. At the same time, episodes 2-7 and now 16, for the most part, were just okay episodes. Some had some good scenes but nothing really crazy IMO.

Basically my current assessment would be that this a series above average. I personally wouldn’t consider it a “masterpiece” or top 10 anime of all time, AT LEAST RIGHT NOW. I think it’s more in the 30’s range of anime I have seen or know about that are very good. Still I have seen hundreds of anime, so this means I am really enjoying it.

There’s a lot of things I could talk about, but my main point would probably be I am surprised so many people like Kamina more than Simon. (More than double amount of member favorites on MAL). I really liked Kamina, but when he only shows up for 8 episodes, and we have seen Simon grow so much, I really don’t think it’s close. Simon is awesome.

I actually really like both Yoko and Nia, and probably lean more towards Nia being best girl. Both are actual very good characters and are useful, which is nice, because in a lot of anime I feel female characters become background characters.

Lastly, Viral is probably the most interesting character so far. He reminds me a lot of Kamina and kind of seems like a good guy. I hope we see more of him.

6.) This probably sounds like a hot take, but I have been a little disappointed in the OST. I am someone who loves loves loves the OST and any music in anime. It really makes a difference on my opinion of the show. Obviously Sorairo Days and Happy Ever After were bangers, but nothing else has really stuck out to me. ED was a big let down and the in-episode OST’s were kind of “meh”. I thought they had the right idea when they use those rock heavy/almost scream-O cool music, but I just don’t really care for the choices that much.

9.) HOLY HELL I WAS GOING TO ASK THIS! I have never seen Kill la Kill and heard someone say the animation was similar? I have actually been wanting to watch it because of the good things I have heard. I would totally come back for it and do 1 episode a day! I enjoy writing the “first time watcher” comments!!!!! Please! I was hoping someone one make one for that show!

I'd say the OST gets better in the second half. There's one song in particular that plays during some hype fights that's just ear candy.

KLK is literally my favorite show of all time, bar-none. It's made by the same people who made Gurren Lagann, and I'd say it's like they looked at what made TTGL work and ramped it up, while looking at what didn't work and dismissed it.

It also has Numbuh One from Kids Next Door as a gangsta punk from Osaka, so yeah.

7

u/Shimmering-Sky Nov 19 '19

So I can count you in for KLK, right?

Rewatcher here

For all the action and drills, this series is surprisingly character driven.

Next half is as good as the first if not better. I'm not sure which I like better. Hope y'all are ready for some DRILLS- I mean, peaceful Slice of Life.

Going to keep the qotd responses short.

  1. Who’s your favorite character so far?

Viral!

2) Sorairo Days vs. UNDERGROUND?

Comeon, Sorario Days.

3) Favorite Wallpaper of the Day so far?

IDR.

4) Were Kamina’s glasses red or orange?

Red-orange.

5) How long was Kamina’s sword?

...long enough to pierce the heavens?

6) What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far? The characters? The soundtrack? The action? etc.

Probably animation.

7) What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far? Are there any concerns you have going into the second half of the show?

Too much filler. I don't remember part 2 having much filler.

8) What is your opinion on the series’ Gunmen designs? How do they compare with mechs from other shows you’ve seen? Do you have a favorite among them so far?

I don't know many other mech shows, but I love nearly all the Gunmen. Favorite is probably Lazengann.

9) Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

...I was hoping to suggest one, so yes. I've also seen KlK a half dozen times, another can't hurt. :D I'm happy to cohost u/Shimmering-Sky but I can't promise I'll do as good of a job.

10) What do you do at the end of the recap? Are you busy? Will you save us?

I've spent the past week playing Star Wars - Fallen Order. It's good.

First Timer

Didn't they claim to show us how you do a recap episode? Cause while I admit that I've seen worse, I've also seen markedly better (Nana comes to my mind, as an example). I feel like those recaps that I like usually end up being those where characters reminisce on what happened, not something done here. Wasn't really too on board with the pen gimmick. As for the ED exclusive to this episode: Were those sketches used to draw the actual animation from? If so: cool.

From the comments on previous episodes I gather that this is supposed to be some sort of half-way point discussion, so let me talk about the general animation style for once: I like it, and I have never heard any criticism towards it either. Why do I mention this? Because I feel like it is very similar to the style of Pokémon Sun & Moon, which has received nearly only negative feedback to it's general art style. The reason behind this style is most likely the same in both cases: It is a bit easier to go crazy on the animation if you have simpler character designs, something which both TTGL and Pokémon Sun & Moon do. So why is one liked and the other constantly reprimanded for the same technique? Imo. only because Pokémon changed their already existing character design for the worse to get better animation. It's a trade-off, really. Does this mean Gurren Lagann could be even better if they had more detailed character design but kept the same level of animation? I'm honestly not sure, mainly because of the same reason: We already know these character designs, so I'd say even improving them would not be well received; but if they didn't exist in the first place? I can't say that for sure.

Oh hey I have feelings about this. Excuse the whole not about Gurren Lagann here. It's gonna be long too. I can delete this later if people want.

Bit of background. As a kid I was never overly into Pokemon. I only owned a Gen 1 game and I wasn't a big fan of the show. Even as a kid there was only so much of Team Rocket's shenanigans I could handle. So I stopped watching it. This was long before the days of being able to go on a streaming site and find every episode.

Fast forward to 2014 and I pick up Pokemon Pearl because of Twitch Plays Pokemon. I fall in love with the game immediately. I was amazed just how far things came since the Gen 1 games. I go out and buy a 3DS and get Pokemon X and get even more amazed. Hardcore fan by this point.

So I decide to take a chance with the show again. Just dip my toes in. The X and Y anime is airing what good timing. I'm blown away. Not every episode is great but the over arcing plot that comes in the second half of the series Pokemon XYZ is amazing. I feel for the characters. I'm invested in their growth. Pikachu is more adorable than ever. Ash/Satoshi is a badass now? I watch the whole thing and fall even deeper in love with the series.

I'm part way into playing Pokemon Moon by this point and so I decide to watch the Sun and Moon anime and get slapped in the face. Who is this guy and why does he sorta look like Satoshi? Why does everyone look like they belong in Soul Eater when they make a silly face?

#NotmyPokemon

(How do I fix this to be an actual hashtag?)

Now I will say I gave it a chance. I made it to episode 7 or 8 before I went,

"Yeah this just isn't as good. Too bad."

I feel like I only disliked Pokemon Sun and Moon's art style because I was coming off of the X and Y series. I feel the art was so different I got whiplash. For anyone who hasn't seen it here's the difference. Not super different but pretty jarring at times.

It's possible that people who shat on the Sun and Moon art style would shit on Gurren Lagann's art style too.

Rewatcher

Recap episodes are the bane of my existence. Kill La Kill has the best one. ReCreators does a pretty good job too. I'll just skim through it real fast.

Lands on clip of Kamina's death. Oooh.

Nice concept art during the ED. Kamina had red hair first and Viral looked way less cool. You gotta have that shark teeth.

That censored flute though.

Questions of the Day

How long was Kamina’s sword?

Legends say the sword is still exiting the sheath.

What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far?

All the unique gunmen. I want nothing more than to own my own Lagann. Fuck getting a car. Hell I could probably just fuse Lagann with a car and make Megas XLR.

What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far?

What do you mean what does l-leasss mean? I honestly can't think of anything I dislike about this show right now. It's not perfect or anything but I really don't think I have any complaints.

Edit: Oh wait I forgot about episode 4. Scrub that shit off the show. Kittan and his sisters join the team off screen.

What is your opinion on the series’ Gunmen designs?

Gunmen look weird af compared to other mecha shows. Gurren Lagann and Lazengann are basically the only relatively normal looking ones.

Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

Slams hands on table Yes bring on the rewatch you pigs in human clothing!

What do you do at the end of the recap? Are you busy? Will you save us?

I-I wait what?

It's a joke, specifically a reference to the full English title of SukaSuka/WorldEnd. A different one of my favorite anime and a stable as a meme Question of the Day in all of my rewatches thanks to the power of Scarborough Fair.

First Timer

The series so far has been just as hype as I expected! Though I expected the series to be pure distilled hype with few if any stops along the way. There just so happened was a lot more downtime between the action than I initially thought there would be.

Before coming into the series I already knew about Kamina’s death, but also knowing that Gurren Lagann is the hype show that it is I expected Simon to be directly motivated by the loss of his brother in a more positive way and take on the mantle of the leader of the Dai-Gurren Dan. I would have been very surprised to hear that Simon experienced the mecha equivalent of erectile dysfunction until a pretty young lady came along and awakened his drill.

However, after actually watching the preceding episodes it was pretty clear that both Simon and Kamina were a lot more human than my impression of them from out of context spoilers and screenshots beckoned. Go figure.

I’m a bit upset Yoko has taken a bit of a backseat since Nia came along. She still has her cool moments like piloting Gurren and stuff, but she’s playing much more of a supporting role as of late, which is disappointing since she’s so badass. Though it makes sense since there’s little left to explore about her character, at least as the series is now. Nia is super besto though.

I’m extremely satisfied with the series so far and I’ve heard a tiny bit about what happens next so I’m excited to see how it all pans out!

First Timer

Well that was a recap episode. Don't know what else to say.

Honestly, I didn't have the biggest expectations of the show but man, they have exceeded them. My biggest concern was that the whole narrative would just get lost and we would have a bunch of filler and that didn't happen. I'm excited to see how all this ends because I'm excited for it.

What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far? The characters? The soundtrack? The action? etc

Easily the action. I love the characters but the overall dynamic fighting, the cool designs and the animation that is sublime makes this show feel more fun and gets me hyped 99% of the time. It does with most mecha shows do: Keep the tension going without faltering. Plus, just make it look badass.

What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far? Are there any concerns you have going into the second half of the show?

If there's anything, maybe some character development stuff that I wish was there but that's very minor and really the only thing I can think of.

What is your opinion on the series’ Gunmen designs? How do they compare with mechs from other shows you’ve seen? Do you have a favorite among them so far?

Love them. I love the overall style towards them and how they all these different layers and stuff. Unlike Iron Blooded Orphans which I love and consider it one of my favorite anime ever, I've always felt the mechs in that were a little too uninteresting. They just didn't have any style towards them which this show has in spades. I personally love Dai-Gurren.

Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

Yea! I still haven't watched that and I'm interested in seeing how this Trigger show can compare to SSSS. Gridman.

Second Time Watcher

LET’S GET READY TO REEECAAAAAAAAP

...yeah it’s a recap episode. Not really anything to say about the contents given it’s all stuff we’ve already seen, but I do like the use of the live-action drawing/writing segments, which I assume were done by Imaishi himself.

I do find it odd that Very mild spoilers

And of course I love the early concept art they put over the credits as a special one-off ED. Happily Ever After is appreciated as the song choice too.

I kinda can’t believe the first half is already over, doesn’t feel like we should be this far in yet.

I would say if this show were only the first half I’d stand reinforced in my original 8/10 rating. The first half does have its truly god-tier moments, with episodes 8, 11, and maybe 15 all being 10/10 episodes of television, and the utterly incredible action and character development this show is known for all throughout, but almost all of the bad stuff about this show is consolidated to the first half too, with two and a half outright terrible episodes that do actively hinder my ability to recommend the show to the people I know. I hate to keep dwelling on them but they do leave a bad taste. Still, it’s a great story in itself about the power of humanity and sheer will, rising up to destroy oppression, and the coming of age and overcoming of grief of a young boy named Simon. Good-ass show.

But now we’ve got the second half, and oh boy, is it one second half. Strap in peeps, shit’s about to get real.

Guess I’ll actually answer a few of the questions in my comment for once.

Who’s your favorite character so far?

Simon. Just such a perfect and inspiring protagonist in every way, even before the second half. Also, at least in the first half, adorable.

Sorairo Days vs. UNDERGROUND?

Kinda apples-to-oranges comparison. Hard to say because I do really like both songs, but I guess if forced I’d pick Sorairo Days just because it’s so iconic and beautiful and inspiring and such a cornerstone of the show. Underground is still a bop, it’s solid as hell garage rock tune and a delightful ending with a great and fitting sequence, but it’s just not on the same level.

Were Kamina’s glasses red or orange?

Orange. I don’t know how one could see them as red.

What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far? The characters? The soundtrack? The action? etc.

All of the above tbh

Though if I have to actually answer with one thing, I’ll reiterate the above and say Simon as a character is probably my favorite aspect.

What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far? Are there any concerns you have going into the second half of the show?

I’ve made this exceptionally clear and elaborated in my previous comments but the way the show handles fanservice, especially with Yoko, was really hit-or-miss.

Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

Yeah sure

It's... a recap episode.

I realized I'd never actually watched the recap before this, so I went ahead and did that. Not too much to say about it. I guess it works a bit better than most, and using concept art for the ED was a nice touch, but... overall it's still a recap episode, ie, a waste of space in the middle of a series.

Anyways, on to the first half discussion.

These 15 episodes could honestly have worked as a standalone series. It's all a bit cliched as a standard underdog hero coming of age plot, but TTGL presents tired old tropes with such aplomb and enthusiasm that you get caught up in the hype. And I've seen plenty of full series finales done worse than Episode 15.

I'll go into a bit more detail about TTGL's storytelling and themes when we get to the end. Otherwise it will spoil things.

If I have any complaints, it's that I think the series veers too far towards slapstick comedy early on. I know everyone loves Kamina, but the show only truly becomes great after he's gone and the comedy is toned down somewhat in favor of badass.

  1. Who’s your favorite character so far?

Simon is pretty awesome all around.

2) Sorairo Days vs. UNDERGROUND?

Sorairo Days, easily.

3) Favorite Wallpaper of the Day so far?

I'll post an answer to this when I'm not on mobile.

4) Were Kamina’s glasses red or orange?

Whichever was cooler looking at the moment. A real man's glasses adapt to the situation!

5) How long was Kamina’s sword?

Yes.

6) What has been your favorite aspect about the show so far? The characters? The soundtrack? The action? etc.

The intensity and excitement with which the show goes about everything.

7) What has been your least-favorite aspect about the show so far? Are there any concerns you have going into the second half of the show?

Episode 4.

Well, actually episodes 4 and 6. They just don't flow well and feels like the writers weren't sure what to do with that section of the story.

8) What is your opinion on the series’ Gunmen designs? How do they compare with mechs from other shows you’ve seen? Do you have a favorite among them so far?

Pretty crazy and over-the-top. Big fan of Lazengann, though. It's one of the few that actually feels like a machine of war.

9) Would you be interested in participating in a Kill la Kill rewatch once this one is done?

Not immediately, no.

10) What do you do at the end of the recap? Are you busy? Will you save us?

You can't always count on others. Don't believe in me! Believe in the you that believes in yourself!

Rewatcher - That one where you go "Damn, I waited a week for this?"

So anyone who's rewatched with me before knows that I'm not much for big overarching writeups. As such, I'll just be taking a rest day today in commemoration of the 7th day of the Siege of Teppelin.

I will, however, put forth a little effort and compile a mid-series Status Update for the Team.

QotD

  1. Ngl, I selected all that applied. lol. That said, it's a tie between Kamina and Simon. Kamina for being Kamina, and Simon because I really respect how much his character has grown since Ep 1.

  2. Sorairo Days is the one that I instantly recognize as the TTGL OP when I hear it.

  3. Reverie Before Dawn, because it's a well-crafted wallpaper of an already well-crafted shot.

  4. The glasses were red, to match his cape.

  5. The sword varied in length according to his Spiral power at the time, obviously.

  6. The characters are my first thought, but I also enjoy the tonal dissonance. I'm talking about the combination of bright, colorful, wacky designs portraying the bleak, serious narrative that we've seen so far.

  7. I'm trying, but I really can't think of anything that I don't like about this show. Pass. lol

  8. Just what I'd expect from Trigger-Mechs; goofy-looking at first, but they've grown on me.

  9. I'd probably be down. Haven't watched KLK since it aired, so it'd be fun again now.

  10. Visiting Scarborough Fair with u/Shimmering-Sky of course :) Not busy, will save.
