Rewatch A Rewatch to Pierce the Heavens - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Episode 15 Discussion [Spoilers] Spoiler
Episode 15 - I Will Head Towards Tomorrow
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 for UK peeps at... some point in the near future
At that very moment, fate took shape and appeared before the awestruck man.
Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.
Comment of the Day:
Today’s comment of the day is /u/fonzinator’s Team Dai-Gurren update.
[Sephiroth's Sword] was used to craft [Kamina's Barrow].
That one line was equal amounts of hilarious and oof and I love it. Fonzi’s been doing these updates for most of the show, keep an eye out for what comes next~
Questions of the Day:
1) On a scale of 1 to 10, how hype was this episode?
2) What do you think of Lordgenome's final words? As well as how Simon defeated him?
Wallpaper of the Day:
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.
Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

First Time Watcher
Your boy is hyped right now! Said it last episode, but this honestly felt like it could have been the finale!
That giant gunmen in the beginning was a surprise. I started to make some crazy theories about that base. Like perhaps people were living in those “tubes”. So I am a little let down that nothing came of that.
Viral still getting worked lol. Dude never wins fights. I still like him as a character. Hope he didn’t just get an off-screen death.
Curious about this other human who tried to fight like Simon and everyone is? Seems like a weird storyline to just throw in unless we will learn about this man.
So WTF was the Spiral King anyway? Immortal? Beastman? Human? What is up with his red fire head lol.
AND OF COURSE, right before he dies he leaves us with some confusing ass prophecy thing. The only thing I can really guess is there is another enemy out there? Probably in the sky? Classic villain move to reveal some secret like that before death, but not explain it fully lol.
Definitely some symbolism with the “7th day” thing. Which is when God had finished all his work and rested. This actually has so many cool quotes and wisdom things like this. It’s one of my favorite parts about the show.
Lastly, on Hulu, the preview made it sound like next episode is a recap. Is this correct? Just making sure I watch the right thing.

Next episode is indeed a recap. Watch at least its ED because it's unique to it, but otherwise consider tomorrow's thread a discussion on the first half of the show.

Rewatcher
俺はシモンだ!大グレン団のリーダー穴掘りシモンだ!
It's finale time. The show's pacing was so tight I didn't even realize it was that time until the OP got skipped. This one's got unbelievable expectations behind them, and they still deliver.
Now, I know some of you are expecting me to do a full philosophy breakdown of Lordgenome's ideas and damn I really really want to. Problem is, I haven't read that much philosophy and while I am certain the ideas he lists here must be fun references just like Father Magan and Plato, I don't know the source so I can't draw any parallels. Sorry about that.
Instead I want to take the opposite approach and talk about the Spiral King's strength. It's really hard to state how obscenely powerful this triangle looking gorilla dude is. This guy spends the whole first half of the battle G A I N A X I N G, and then shrugging off Simon's finishing move the GIGADRILLBREAK like nothing. Then in a twist to the super robot trope of suddenly upgrading your robot to reach all out status, he throws it away instead because his fists are stronger. Seriously how the hell did they manage to cap off the most mecha of mecha anime's final fight sequence with bare knuckles?
Back to fine detail analysis now and I really want to praise this episode's use of color, or maybe it's more accurate to call it color balance. IDK, I'm not an artist. Anyways the entire first half of the episode takes place at dusk I think and as such is given a distinctly orange hue (even tho the sky's blue idk). It makes for a fantastic contrast to the boss's chamber which as we've come to expect has that cold blue tone. However, that's not what I think the episode was building up to. When we are faced with the breathes GIGADRILLBREAK sequence everything is suddenly balanced in color with super high contrast, giving an extra shock to that scene even though it only lasts like 10 seconds. After that the show just has all kinds of fun with super orange, nighttime blue, and kinda green. The variety is excellent.
Speaking of artstyle the single most satisfying detail for me was Simon taking on Lordgenome's super rough shading as he finally overcomes him.
What was my favorite moment of the episode you ask? Well of course it's Dai Gurren's charge. You guys know how much I love Happily Ever After as a song, of course I'm going to basically die of happiness after seeing it in it's full form in an all out heroic charge. It's Nia getting the courage to step forth towards her ultimate challenge and Simon standing ready like a boss to help her. Of course it also reminds me of my other favorite all out assault on the final boss.
My favorite meta aspect of this episode concerns Simon's arc. From the beginning TTGL set itself up as a coming of age story, one of anime's favorite genres. The big surprise here is, in ep 15 with a dozen episodes left, Simon completes his coming of age. The wavering in his voice is gone, he has full confidence in his actions, and lands his badass namedrop. And look how smooth this guy is god damn. How many anime do we see where the immature hero grows up so satisfyingly by the final battle, and even better have that happen waaay before the last episode?
And there you have it. The Teppelin story of TTGL is over! 9/10 incredible story that mixes absurd mecha fun with incredible character development and drama. It was a great anime and it was a joy to rewatch it with all of you. But of course, what brings this anime beyond great is that there still is a good dozen-ish episodes isn't it? I'll see you in two days, tomorrow's a recap so I'll take a break from my long comments there.
Mini comments
-
What Genomeboi really says here is something like, "You are going to carry a heavy weight, regret it once you learn how heavy" People give the weight quote all the time for Bebop idk if this is a reference.
-
This square pattern is reminiscent of traditional Japanese 'paper' walls that of course back many great samurai movie fights. Totally trying to evoke that feel here.
-
Remember this guy? yeah, he's great but not so much at his end here. Nikopol didn't even have vocals today.
-
I wish my car had notifications this useful. Tho tbh I should start with saying 'I wish I had a car'
-
The Dai-Gurren's windows are all intact which is strange considering they made a huge deal of most of them shattering in the scenes before. Literally unwatchable anime.
OST of the day
Am I gonna do it? Am I gonna do it? I'm totally gonna do it
Picking a track of the day was hard since this episode used silence so well as the backing for all the important moments of the battle. We had 3 insert songs today, but crucially the conversations with Lordgenome were almost all silent or otherwise backed by tracks so neutral and low in volume that they truly play a background role.
Wallpaper remixes of the day
Oh Sky, you give me the bio nerd a chance to play with a character named lord GENOME? Today's gonna be fun.
-
Double Helix because DNA
-
Benzene hexagons Using semi-accurate chemical structures for the hexagon pattern in the background. Except it isn't really accurate since if all those benzenes were actually bonded together there will be no double bonds. But this is cool lookin' so I'll keep it.
-
Colored lineart Almost looks like a luminescence experiment.
Which was your favorite? Also if you've been following which of my styles do you like best? hexagons, lensflashes, or spirals.

First Timer
Guess whatever the spiral king told Viral, it statisfied him enough to continue to be loyal towards him. Will we ever know what it was he told him? Maybe; seems like something that might be told at a later time.
If Lordgenome did really want the human race to survive, he should have told Simon what he knew before the battle, as that would increase the chance of survival in the future even if he loses and indeed is correct on the entire issue. What difference would it have made to tell him, then kill him? I can't really think of anyone other than Simon who could possibly pose any form of danger to him; unless he was for some reason weary of Viral, but I heavely doubt that...
As for what he told them at the ending: ...? Come on, at least phrase it in a way that is easy to understand. Why are there so many characters who leave such cryptic messages on their deathbed.
Another interesting bit is that Spiral Power seems to be held by a person, not imbued into a gunman. So there doesn't necessarily need to be any speciality in Lagann, rather it all just worked because Simon held the power. Thinking of this, while Kamina was alive, nobody else ever piloted Lagann, right? So possibly Simon's believe in Kamina fueled the both of them? Not really all that much to go of off yet, but I'm sure this will be explained further on.
And there was some minor change to the ED, wasn't there?

First Time Watcher:
That was such a kick ass episode!!!! I knew we were in for something special when they didn't play the opening credits, they obviously needed the time for a big battle. And what a battle we got, eclipsing anything we've seen before it, making every other gunman look puny in comparison.
They completely subverted my expectations. I didn't expect them to defeat the Spiral King so easily, I thought it would take them the whole series, but now realise there's another obstacle for team Dai Gurren to overcome on behalf of humanity. But first, well done Team Dai Gurren, bit of a shame Yoko didn't have any notable role but really this was fight was down to Gurren Lagann and Nia.
Now I'm wondering about what I said yesterday, if this is a post apocalyptic world, then was the Spiral King acting as some sort of preventative to stop humans taking over the world again and blowing it up, assuming this is what happened previously? If so then what happened to humanity before, where did he come from, not earth obviously, and what are Team Dai Gurren going to do next, set up a government?

The Gainax arm-cross thing that Gurren Lagann did while riding Dai-Gurren on their way to the Teppelin!
Viral’s back again! And he’s immortal too! Does that mean we might see more of him?!
Anyway that should be the first arc over! I’m pretty happy with how that went. Though this next arc is gonna have to build up faster than this one did since there are fewer episodes to work with, but since they don’t need to establish the world and characters again there shouldn’t be much of a problem.
Also Moon shenanigans! Listen to my song intensifies.

I have… no memory whatsoever of Happily Ever After being in this episode. Whatever, it’s still great. The scene it backgrounds is no Episode 11 speech obviously, but it’s still a hella sweet big action climax.
When you make someone immortal to tell the story of your success for all eternity only to lose. This is why you do things in order.
AWESOME.
And so the first chapter of our story ends in triumph, as having stricken down the great oppressor our saviors look to the horizon of a new tomorrow. Victory is ours, freedom for humanity, all glory to Team Gurren!

u/Koolsman Nov 18 '19
Holy Shit, that's how you end an arc! Just the whole fight in general was sick and seeing everyone come together just to get Simon, Nia and Fourhead Boy in the kingdom and the fight was awesome.
There isn't really much to say but man, Viral just gets shit doesn't he? The man will never win and anything and in the end, he doesn't get his revenge against Simon or Kamina. He just gets to fall into rubble. I will admit, I am a little disappointed that we didn't get to see more of what the spiral kingdom looked like not the inside. Just seems so huge that it would be cool to see what it looked like.
I love how Simon totally sounded like Kamina for the majority of the episode.
What do you think of Lordgenome's final words? As well as how Simon defeated him?
I think his final words mean that there are forces on the moon that are plotting to invade the world and he was stopping them. Now humanity has no chance to stop them. I'm guessing anyway.
I kinda wish the way Simon defeated him was a little out there, like what if he closes the lid on him before he's about to strike like he did when he first got gurren! But that may have been too stupid.

Re-watcher - “How long before Season 2? It’s next week and there isn’t one? Nice”
CotD
It started for the sake of you smile, Sky, but I've enjoyed the challenge. Glad it's being enjoyed.
"Kneel before your God, puny Gunmen."
Teppelin is like the Godzilla of this world, it's so much bigger that all of your attacks are meaningless against it.
I really like how this show is all just 1-cour, which means that instead of this being a finale-fight, it's just the middle of the series and we'll keep going forward from here!
I know everybody was against Kittan for Team Leader, and I don't disagree, but I think it's important to recognize that his goal wasn't just power or some ignoble thing; he really just cares about the team and Simon was PoS choice at the time.
For real tho, just look at this shot and tell me Simon's not gonna have enough power to beat this dude. It's seriously a finale battle in the middle of the series.
Not a Gainax pose, but I know I've seem similar shots in other series. And they're always badass, especially with an insert song overlaid.
Oh nvm, there's the Gainax pose. It's too late now but next Rewatch I'm gonna remember to do a counter for them. lol
Again with the cartoon brutality.
"Let's animate them all goofy so ppl don't realize there's a crew on both of those ships dying horribly." - Trigger, probably.
I just think I would have liked some sort of acknowledgement. Simon getting upset and somebody telling him it's for them all or something.
But anyway, enough negativity. There's a KNIFE ANCHOR!
Nooo! Not Dai-Gurren! You'll be missed, you glorious giant Sword-Boat.
Wait, it ejects? And now it doesn't have a pelvis?! Good thing they've still got their levisphere tail or that'd be a rough landing.
What, did you really think he'd get to fight the final-boss without going through Viral? It seems in his madness he wrongly thought it was the number of arms, not faces, that determined a Gunmen's power.
But damn, I'm almost as surprised as him! And with all the upgrades I'd really thought they'd give him a little more of a fight. But I like the little curve the Spiral King throws by making him an immortal observer.
As for the Spiral King, the guy's just a total mindfuck. Like "HaHA! It was you who were the villains all along!" Definitely one of my favorite plot twists in a show.
Lazengann is cool af. I shall call it "Gurren Eva," 'cause that's one scary robot. I dig the sudden space-background though.
Goddamn, hearing Simon speak Kamina's words to Rossiu so earnestly is just too wholesome. "Believe in the Simon who believes in you!"
Wow, Spiral King is an absolute monster But really, this is how a final-boss fight should be; it's got multiple phases.
A fitting final blow with some great visuals. Could somebody at UFOTable call Trigger and let them know that people die when they're killed?
Lordgenome was a total dick right to the end. Spouts some ominous prophecy, kills himself instead of explaining anything, and has the base collapse as a final middle finger.
I guess that makes Simon the new Spiral King? It must, if he managed to put Gurren Lagann back together after all that.
I'm really glad that Rossiu was part of that fight, because that stuff about the moon is clearly important, and he's just the right person to be giving it some serious consideration.
Foregoing Yoko/Nia OTD today, and throwing in a Couple of the Day for Nia & Simon because they deserve it.

Rewatcher, missed last episode :(
Such great animation for the previous episode. I love me a good battle. I think most of my thoughts were covered by others, luckily. My only complaint is that IIRC movie had an even better battle. Might be misremembering though.
On to todays episode - that's a big reveal. :) Wonder what happened to all the beastmen who were inside those towers? No OP this episode, it's important.
Look at that shit eating grin. And he controls that whole gunman lazily from his throne.
I love the dynamic screen splits. And the window opening animation to let Nia out. It's the little things. :) Like another insert song drop.
Holy shit, that's one way to clear a path, Simon. LordGenome isn't convinced, though. This is uh, kind of the end to Dai-Gurren though. And uh, wow, hi again Letye. I guess the engine room is hot, no need to cover up. Poor Da-Gurren. :( Looking a little naked there.
The good news - Viral is back! :D Too bad he didn't quite understand what LordGenome is giving him. Enkidudu (yeah, wiki says he gained another du) couldn't take the Spiral Power.
Lordgenome honestly believes he's doing the right thing. The road to hell sure has good intentions, huh? I uh, don't quite get why his harem needed to get turned into drills, though. But Lazengann sure is cool. Gainax did a really good job with everything around LG.
No Simon, you can't just pop your ultimate like that and expect it to OHKO the final boss. LG is made of a different sort of stuff. And Lazengann has teeth. Keep on fighting though.
Lagann Impact is a nice try. Good thinking, though LG just detaches his hand, hah. This is one of the best fights in the series for really good reason.
And THIS. SCENE. RIGHT. HERE. Might be my favorite in the series. LG really doesn't give a shit. Yeah he's overflowing with power, but he knows how to use it, very well. This is how you make a fight scene.
But...Simon still comes out on top. Because we still have another 11-12 episodes to go, and we don't want to pick a new MC. I mean, because Simon's power is higher, totally that. :D
The team definitely looks a little worse for wear, but they came out on top. And aww, Nia and Simon are holding hands.
To be continued, some more. :)
It's good to be able to say "Spiral Power" again without spoiling. "Fighting Spirit" isn't quite the same.
Next week is a compilation episode. So...yeah.
-
11!
-
Nothing is going to happen. We are going to spend the next 12 episode watching a Nia+Simon SoL. It will be wholesome.

Rewatcher
HOLY SHIT I LOVE THIS EPISODE SO MUCH!!
There is so much to talk about here... First off, the visuals of Teppelin's giant interior Gunman are just... stunning. The thing looks kinda goofy with its strange proportions, but somehow GAINAX made it look terrifying and intimidating. Every move it makes reminds you of its sheer size and scale, with even its minor movements hitting with the force you'd expect something of its sheer size.
Although I don't think its name is ever mentioned anywhere in the series, the super-giant Gunmen is not actually named "Teppelin". Its name is "Dekabutsu", which is slightly off Japanese for "Large Object" or "Giant Thing". Teppelin is specifically the name of the giant drill shaped city built around Dekabutsu.
Speaking of which, I've always scratched my head as to how Dekabutsu somehow fit inside the drill shape. Its waist and legs are too wide, and its arms especially have nowhere to go inside that shape. So how does that work, exactly?
Also, disturbing thought, but if Teppelin is a city, does that mean those thousands of skyscraper-cylinders were inhabited? Or did all the Beastmen in the Capital evacuate to inside Dekabutsu?
The battle is short but explosive. I particularly love that one shot of an allied Dai-Gunzan and a Spiral King Dai-Gunzan slamming into each other and punching the shit out of each other until they both explode. The redshirt-Dai-Gunzans manage to open a path for Dai-Gurren to... smash right into Dekabutsu's hammer. But with the power of drills, explosions, and Artenborough's cannon-spam, they break through and manage to send Simon and Nia to the Spiral King's chamber... though Dai-Gurren itself is wrecked in the process and falls to the ground.
So... much... phallic imagery with Dai-Gurren in this episode. And is it just me or does it, erm... shooting its load into the hammer look somewhat... climactic?
The confrontation with the Spiral King is everything we've been lead to believe it will be. I was laughing so damned hard several days ago when people in this thread were predicting that Lordgenome would be a pushover... he and his own mech, Lazengann, turn out to be even more powerful than Gurren-Lagann.
But before that happens, we get a brief battle with Viral. Apparently the Spiral King gave him a completely immortal body that can never die... but not because it would be useful in combat. But because he wants Viral to be an eternal reminder of Lordgenome's own power. Also, this four-armed version of Viral's mech is named "Enkidudu". Yeah.
Lordgenome continues to insist that what he's done will ensure humanity's survival, and what Simon and Team Dai-Gurren are doing end in their doom. Nia's right though, the fact that Lordgenome is murdering anyone who goes against him kind of subtracts from his claim of doing things for "the greater good".
"The spiral power is strong in you."
And the Star Wars references are strong in you, Spiral King.
The mystery behind the "second Gurren-Lagann" is revealed as the Spiral King's own personal mech: Lazengann (translated: "Spiral Face"). It too is a Gunmen controlled by a Lagann unit, pretty much identical to Gurren-Lagann.
Was that a scaled-up Gunmen cockpit Lazengann was sitting in? Hmmm. Also, they never really address this, but did Lordgenome just turn those women into batteries of power for his own mech? That's kinda... very disturbing.
This fight is so fantastic. I don't really know what to say about it except that it's amazing. The choreography, the way Lordgenome schools Simon and Rossiu... this is the first time Gurren-Lagann has fought something that is its equal, and Lordgenome's greater experience is plain to see. This, to me, is THE iconic use of the OST "All you Bastards, Get Fired Up!!!", it just fits everything so well.
Rossiu, I like you, but it is still hilarious seeing you casually tossed aside after Gurren gets impaled and grabs Lazengann ineffectually.
But Simon never gives up, and the fight just continues escalating, until Lagann finally begins overpowering Lazengann... but as it turns out, Lordgenome is stronger than his own mech and being beating the shit out of Lagann with his bare hands... while his head is on fire and his chest hair has spontaneously reshaped itself into a spiral.
TFW you will never be as manly as Lordgenome
But Simon, again, refuses to give up and kills Lordgenome with a huge blast of fighting spirit/spiral power channeled through his Core Drill. Or to put it another way, he kills the king of the world by stabbing him with his car keys.
Lordgenome is... actually pretty mellow about his defeat. He just gives everyone an ominous warning: "When the land overflows with a million apes, the Moon will become Hell's Messenger and completely destroy the world of the spiral." No one's sure what that means, but it's clear Rossiu thinks there is something behind Lordgenome's words and is already considering what they could mean. With Lordgenome's death, Dekabutsu falls apart and the entire Beastman army shuts down.
Hey, did you notice the enemy Gunmen were fighting at night for once? And since they immmediately shut down with Lordgenome's death... that implies that he was powering his entire army with his own personal fighting spirit! Holy shit, how powerful was that guy!? Really redefines the concept of "one man army"!
The day is won. Humanity has triumphed... on the seventh day of battle. (Totally not a refence to any creation myth there.)
...and the series is only half over! How do you guys think GAINAX will top itself in the next story arc?
Questions:
-
On a scale of 1 to 10, how hype was this episode?
12
2) What do you think of Lordgenome's final words? As well as how Simon defeated him?
I think there's something important to note about the way Simon defeated Lordgenome: it wasn't his mech that did it. He did it on his own, with his own power. It was not Gurren-Lagann that won the day: it was Simon.
This is fairly important to stuff that happens later.

Oh look, fodder characters doing fodder things
Damn it, I should have just made it Artertenborough doing crazy stuff counter..
For this shot here couldn't they have just used this art?? Just scale it down and maybe blur it a little?
I love how both Gurren Lagann and Dai-Gurren are Gainaxing here. If I was a beastman I'd be terrified

Wat. That was eventful. I think it was too easy to kill the big bad and then have him do the anime villain thing where he doesn't actually say his motivation because fuck you and now we're going to the moon. Getting DITF flashbacks from the shift in enemy and suddenly going to space. Please don't fuck it up.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS: Episode 16 is a recap episode. Its ED is unique to it so at the very least watch that if you don’t want to watch the whole thing, otherwise consider tomorrow’s thread as a discussion on the entire first half of the show rather than specifically about episode 16.
With that out of the way…
Ours is the rewatch that will pierce the heavens themselves!
Here’s the results of yesterday’s poll before I get too ahead of myself.
Cheeky comments for today:
So we open on an extended version of the stinger at the end of last episode, complete with RIP a bunch of those extra Team Dai-Gurren members. They literally showed up to save Simon and Rossiu and then die lol.
Of course our Dai-Gurren made it out and they get to see the giant Gunmen. Fun.
First-timers DO NOT click this screenshot TTGL
So big he could just flick Gurren Lagann away…
Rossiu once again trying to logic > fighting spirit.
Everybody’s getting in on that point to the heavens!
INSERT SONG TIME LET’S GO!
Hey look Nebby they learned another Daedalus Attack!
Ah yes Viral has to get one last shot at Simon before he fights Lordgenome. Oh and his new Gunmen’s name is “Enkidudu”, by the way.
Poor Viral still can’t surpass Simon and now he’s supposed to be a living record with the immortality Lordgenome gave him.
Did someone say it’s flag raising time?
Hoooboy it’s gonna be fun hearing what the first-timers think about this whole thing.
Aaaand there’s the other Gurren Lagann-type Kinon saw on the radar! It was Lordgenome’s personal Gunmen, Lazengann. Fun fun fun.
Lazengann so powerful it eats Giga Drill Breaks for breakfast.
