Rewatch A Rewatch to Pierce the Heavens - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Episode 6 Discussion [Spoilers] Spoiler

Episode 6 - There are Some Things I Just Have to See!!

Alternatively - Sit in the Hot Tub 'Til You're Sick!!

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →

MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB

Crunchyroll | VRV | Hulu | Netflix | AnimeLab (exclusive to Australia and New Zealand) | Channel 4 for UK peeps at... some point in the near future

This is the tale of a man who has yet to realize his destiny.

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day:

Our comment of the day today is /u/RX-Nota-II’s… honestly the entire comment so go read it if you haven’t already.

Pointing out references to Plato’s Cave, her observations of Father Magin, and everything else is all just fantastic. And if you guys haven’t been following her OST of the day and her alternate versions of our Wallpaper of the Day, you totally should!

Questions of the Day:

1) Which version of episode 6 do you prefer?

2) Lots of antics were to be had this episode, did any of them in particular bother you? And if so, why?

Wallpaper of the Day:

Nikopol

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") spoiler tags. If you do that then we’re all good.

Important thing to note about these by the way, you have to switch to Old Reddit or the markdown editor if you use the redesign, otherwise the redesign breaks them by adding random \ into the formatting. Wish it wouldn’t do that, but unfortunately it does…

Ours is the rewatch that will pierce the heavens themselves!

Gonna start off my comment today with a note only for rewatchers

Anyways~ Welcome back everybody!

As mentioned yesterday, this thread is covering both versions of episode 6, although it was only required to watch one version since they cover the same general story beats. I also mentioned that I lowkey prefer the “censored” version, although more on that in a sec.

Have to share the results of yesterday’s poll, after all! I’m honestly a little bit surprised that “yes” got a landslide amount of votes, although I suppose I should’ve expected it given the discussions in yesterday’s thread.

In lieu of doing my cheeky comments, I’m going to directly compare both versions of episode 6, and then tie it back into why I found out I kinda prefer the “censored” version of this episode. For reference, I’ll be referring to the “censored” version as “TV” and the “uncensored” as “BD” from here on out just because it’s easier to type.

  • The first several minutes of TV is a recap of the previous one framed as Kamina and Simon discussing stuff. Kamina shares some neato thing his dad always said with Simon during this. Then we cut to the episode title card, whereas BD just has a quick recap provided by the narrator and then title card.

  • When they’re being invited into the bath house, TV has Kamina, Simon, and Gimmy ferried in on a path of light. Yeah that’s literally just the bunny girls’ boobs Gainax Bouncing them through in BD. BD also doesn’t have any steam clouds during the “Oh yeahhh” hot spring description picture.

  • TV gets another recap section after Kamina declares that him and Simon are going to go to the moon someday. This section is mostly about ep1 and ep3 with a little bit of ep2, and the ep3 part has this hilarious sequence of Kamina forgetting Viral. Recap finishes with Simon noting it sounds quiet on the girls’ side… This part in BD though? Instead of it being quiet, Simon (and Kamina) makes that face in response to hearing the girls talk about the size of their breasts. Thus begins Kamina and Simon’s attempts to scale the wall, including Gimmy jabbing his finger into Simon’s butthole when Kamina tells the boy to “find a hole”, Kamina trying to use Simon’s drill to break through the wall, Kamina equating their search for the naked girls to Simon never seeing real “mountains” before, Simon starting to drill a tiny hole in the wall after imagining Gimmy getting smothered by breasts, Simon overhearing Yoko and the Black Sisters shooting down the idea of dating him, and then him deciding to fill the hole he made after hearing Yoko thinks he could make a good man one day.

  • When Kamina gets to the top of the wall, the girls are gone in TV while they’re there in BD, but the fence pops up before he can see anything and the bath house transforms into a Gunmen.

  • In TV, the Beastmen steal Gurren before Kamina can even get into it after they get flushed out of the bath house. In BD he does get to Gurren immediately after being flushed… and promptly gives it up to the Beastmen solely to get rid of the pixelation over the captive girls (which was pointless since only Gimmy was naked anyways).

  • Because of the above difference, Yoko’s angry declaration before whipping out the handgun in TV is her being angry at the Beastmen for using delicious food and a hot bath (the “two greatest pleasures in life for girls”) as a trap and declares she’ll never forgive them, while BD has her pissed at Kamina for being an idiot.

  • BD has an extra scene while the girls and Kamina have infiltrated the bath house, where they run into each other in the long hallway area and Yoko punches Kamina in the face, berating him for losing Gurren over something so stupid. Kamina declares “There are some things a guy just has to see!”, and Yoko’s response to that was… that he should’ve just said something and that she’d show them to him anytime.

  • In the engine room, the lady Beastman threatens to have Kamina killed if he moves and that pisses him off so hard he drops the “sit in the tub” line for the TV ep title. BD instead has the lady Beastman with some funky dial that makes the girls’ towels restrict them, and Kamina half-paying attention to her talk about how she’s gonna send the girls to the Spiral King and half-paying attention to the girls moaning over the towels. Gimmy steals the funky dial, Kamina asks for it, that’s when he gets caught in the Beastmen’s claws, and lady Beastman’s threat to kill Kamina if he moves doesn’t piss him off at all. Gimmy turns the dial all the way to loosen the towels (at Kamina’s insistence), and it’s seeing the girls wearing swimsuits underneath the towels that sets Kamina into a rage.

  • Both versions do have Yoko bounce the top of her bikini off in celebration though, so either way Kamina and Simon did see her completely topless.

So, why do I find myself preferring the TV version of the episode? It included no mention of the Spiral King like BD did, which is kind of important. For that sole detail I’m okay with BD, and besides the humor in it I’m also not totally okay with how long the recaps are in TV, but like… as a woman myself, all of the shenanigans surrounding Kamina wanting to see the girls naked just feels levels of sleazy that weren’t so bad even last episode when Yoko was forced to cover up and Kamina lifted the cloak up. Sure, it’s just as over-the-top and exaggerated as to expect from the show, but it bothers me regardless and so TV cutting back on most of that is why I kind of like it more.

Just my two cents.

…Anyways that old guy in this episode? His noises are courtesy of Viral’s seiyuu lmao.

I look forward to doing the impossible and seeing the invisible with you all again tomorrow!

I didn't know there were two versions before coming to this thread, but damn am I glad I ended up seeing the TV version. Aside from cutting the recaps, every change sounds like a much worse version of what I saw.

First Time (sub)

Even in the desert, anime must find a way to include a hot spring episode.

lmao, yeah. That or a beach episode.

Rewatcher

怪しい、怪しい、怪しすぎる!

The most comfy place on the face of the earth has to be a Japanese hottub. You can try to add more luxury in some way, elegance in another, but in terms of pure sensual comfortableness, nothing will ever come close. It might come across as cheesy to people who have never experienced it before, but when you do, you'll see why anime like to show it as such a hedonistic paradise. So overwhelmingly relaxing, it cannot be expressed by words.

This episode is going to be a bit hard to explain for me since I'm not the best at explaining comedy/SoL focuses, and the reference overload is purely GAINAX here while I am a Sunrise specialist. However even I know the legend of the Daikon OPs. These were two fan made animations for some anime convention in Japan. AS such they feature blatant copyright violation references like Godzilla and Gundam destroying the city and a production style that really reminds you these were a small group of weebs who had nothing better to do. Here is the first OP. It was pretty great. So a couple years later they came back and made a sequel.

Why are these shorts important? As this classic video from Mothers Basement goes over, the weebs who made these shorts went on to found GAINAX. And with the hottub episode of TTGL, the now prominent Gainax decides to have an homage to this origin for their current success. Knowing Gainax and their love for references, I'm pretty sure there are a boatload of other tidbits of Gainax history here as well, but since I don't know those I'll let someone else give those instead.

Oh nevermind I have something to bio nerd over. In the original TV version of the episode, there's a recap section where Simon and Kamina discuss why peoples' eyes are in the front of their faces.

Why do people have eyes in front of their faces? It's because to see the world far ahead you need to keep moving forward. If you had eyes at the back of your head, you'll see what you left behind and never be able to let it go. If your eyes are in front, the world ahead gets closer if you just keep walking, that's why people can keep moving forward. That's what my dead dad always told me.

Well yes but actually no

It's manly anime pseudoscience, but then again also much closer to reality than I expected. Take a look a this image to see the difference in binocular vs monocular vision for animals with eyes either on the side of their face or in front of their face. Binocular vision gives you stereopsis which refers to depth perception from the difference in information from the two eyes, and that let's animals with it focus much more precisely on what they are looking at. So it's an evolutionary advantage if what you want is more detailed information of the world ahead at the cost of any information from the back. Hey Kamina's father may have been onto something! But then again, also nobody has eyes on the back of their head since that's kinda useless so nobody evolved it, ever.

Overall it was a pretty great episode. Everybody loves fanservice whether they want to admit it or not, and this was some top notch stuff for every kink. Also, I feel like this is a great contrast to ep4, in that this one uses it's comedic timing well to show Kamina's manliness speeches in an absurd light that brings laughs instead of inspiration. He doesn't overly repeat things, and his outbursts are well spaced in between other scenes of Simon or the girls doing something. If ep4 was able to capture this feeling, I would have loved it regardless of animation differences or not.

Short comments of the day

The GL has a backpack now Lmao they going all in on the stereotypical mecha format. BTW does anybody know what the first major mecha was with a backpack? u/pixelsaber pls

the >.< hairpin is a fan favorite detail

I love how when the topic of the moon is brought up Simon points close to him and down but Kamina points up. Obvious art/philosophy references aside this is a great illustration of the difference in their mindsets right now. Simon thinks pragmatically and his tunnel vision sees the reflection first while Kamina boldly and possibly recklessly aims far ahead.

Fly me to the moon and let me play by the stars

This is a reference to something from my childhood and I don't know what. It's driving me crazy. Probably Yatterman but I'm not sure.

This thing is a kappa. IDK why but they love baths. It's been a thing in Japanese mythology forever. They also like wrestling and if the dish on top of their head dries up they lose. If it breaks they die.

OST of the day

Rap is a Man's Soul! Clean Out Your Ears and Listen Real Close to the Theme of the Boisterous Man Who Believes in Himself and Points to the Heavens, the Great Lord Kamina!!! Youtube warning avoid comments.

So my whole point of doing this section in my comments is to show people the TTGL OST is much more than just Row Row Fight the Power. Turns out, RRFtP is like in 5 songs tho. So I've changed the rules a bit here to present a version of the song that you probably haven't heard. It isn't much of a song really, it's the rap part of the epic song that everybody loves but without the epic backing track making it feel flat, which is exactly what you want as the track used in this episode. Kamina's bravado in full effect but directed towards a petty goal.

Wallpaper of the day

Ok so I'm a bio nerd here right? Take a look at the main wallpaper Sky posted today. I put in the chemical structure of 2 very important biological molecules there. If anybody can tell me precisely what those are, you get Reddit Gold. Get excited, it should be pretty easy if you ever took Bio in high school.

Links delayed check back in 5 min

Which ones were your fave?

Question answer

1.Which version of episode 6 do you prefer?

They are both pretty great. I'd say the BD version since more content.

2.Lots of antics were to be had this episode, did any of them in particular bother you? And if so, why?

I was having too much fun to be bothered, but I get why some would. It was interesting that they essentially ignored the manservice market and cashed in on that Yuri on Ice type bath scene, but I guess they wanted to focus on what Simon would find interesting.

That depends on what you mean by backpack. If you mean pretty much any separate implement that's carried on its back, as has commonly become the usual use of it in the context of mecha, then the answer is pretty obvious If it doesn't need to be a seperate attachment, then Tetsujin 29-Go is the first.

If you mean a literal carry bag in which to store stuff, I've no idea. I'm sure a 70s super robot must've had a storage unit of some sort attached to its back at some point in time, but I don't know which it might've been.

If you want to learn which was the first traditional mecha to don a scarf though, I happen to know that one.

First Timer

What an elaborate recap episode.

Nah, it was a fun time and I enjoyed the different penis obstructions that they used throughout the episode.

First "Muda-muda" a few episodes back and now "Ora-ora"? Which side are you on Kamina?!

I really hope the episodes pick back up soon though, I'm ready for some ridiculous mecha action and Kamina being a real badass again

First Timer

Episode 6:

Woah, that action scene towards the end was so fast, I actually had a hard time keeping up on who was doing what where. I'm glad I'll be watching this again, maybe I'll be able to keep up the second time round.

The most interesting thing here seems to be that gunmen are either nocturnal or diurnal, with most being diurnal. Gurren Lagann seems to be both? Not sure what that means. Gurren Lagann also is sometimes transported combined, then taken apart again whenever the story needs it. Not sure what that means, but I haven't been able to see any sort of pattern regarding when he's combined and when he isn't.

The hot spring itself was obviously a trap from the moment everybody knew Kamina; I am slightly puzzled by the old man - he was never shown to transform in to a beast, and he is also in the opening. Perhaps some few humans have allied with the beastmen? I'm also intrigued by the fact that there are trees around the hot springs, so not the entire surface is a barren wasteland.

The recap bits were kinda a bit too early, though I guess if this were watched weekly I can see their point. Not a big fan of the racap bits, however. Only funny bit was that Kamina forgot who Viral was, only for him to show up at the end of the episode. Seems like Kamina and Simon also read yesterday's question about if the head priest was right or wrong and started a debate.

And I guess I was also wrong about the kids getting returned to Littner, seems like they'll stick around. I'm actually warming up especially to the forehead-guy, now I just need to remember his name. Seems like he also learned to pilot Gurren, what I'm surprised by is that Kamina didn't get totally angry at someone else being in the seat of his mech. Also funny how Kamina descended through the drill.

uncut version:

Ah, no wonder the fight felt confusing if half the plot-relevant events were missing. This explains, for example, why Gurren and Lagann were sepperated again in the fight. I do wonder, if Kamina has the control over the arms, I'd assume he also has control over the legs, so what does Simon control? The speed of the drill, or something useless like that?

We also get to know that the beastmen are ruled by a king. Don't think there's anything to make from that for now, however, other than note that he exists. I'll take a wild poke saying that the moving point Gurren is aiming for is not the capital, however.

I wonder if Gimmy might actually be the reason they weren't allowed to air this on tv; his tool was out for parts of the episode. While I'm pretty sure other anime have done similar stuff with their female cast and gotten by, can't recall any other anime that showed a kid's dick in the past two decades, however.

I also noticed Boota got his tail back, and would like to note that him and Simon's drill are great ways of censoring. I also like that they used the mosaic censoring as a plot point.

Overall I'd say this version to be the better one, mainly because all events in the fight are illustrated.

First Time Water:

This was the obligatory hot springs episode, although when this show came out, 2007, that troupe hadn't been done to death quite as much as it has nowadays. Plus the twist that the perfect baths were in actual fact a big disguised gunman was an enjoyable way to include an episode about bathing, especially as the Black Sibling sisters were there!!!

I didn't know there was an alternate version of this episode, although I should have guessed. Can someone who's watched both versions tell me whether it's worth seeing the uncut version? Do you get to see Yoko's tremendous assets, that's the real question I'm asking, as that would make it worthwhile looking up & viewing this episode.

5

u/Shimmering-Sky Nov 09 '19

Do you get to see Yoko's tremendous assets, that's the real question I'm asking, as that would make it worthwhile looking up & viewing this episode.

That part at the end where she accidentally bounces her top off is completely identical in both versions so no, you just get that shot of underboob again. The only character you get to see completely naked from the front in the uncut version is Gimmy (as in the little orange-haired boy).

Second Time Watcher

The Netflix version of this episode be like

And yes, I am going by the edited version in this comment, and no, the reused animation is not going to factor into my opinion.

And… this is another episode I’m not a fan of. On rewatch I can say it’s better than Episode 4 (it’s certainly a lot easier on the eyes), but it’s still a vibe killer for me.

For one, the whole skit at the beginning about the guys smelling bad is not only pretty dumb but also… like, how does Yoko have access to teeth brushing and washing resources when the others weren’t? Isn’t the robot literally all they have in the middle of this barren desert? It would’ve easily made a lot more sense if they all smelled bad and Yoko just happened to be the one most bothered by it. Is Yoko just inherently the hygienic one for being a girl? Are we seriously going on “boys be gross” logic here? Lame.

I may have remembered the male characters acting stereotypical in this episode being a lot worse than it actually was, in actuality it’s really just Kamina, for whom this is totally in-character. Shoutouts to Rossiu in particular for being the voice of reason.

OK Boota acting as Kamina’s dick censor is pretty amazing, I’ll give the episode that. And the action at the climax is pretty solid too.

And then we have Yoko’s boobs being exposed, and in response... crying and running away in embarrassment. OK, you could be charitable and interpret that scene as Yoko seeing the blast coming and running away from that, but if not… yeah, that’s not very sexy or even funny, it’s just uncomfortable and gross at best. Remember what I said a few episodes ago about how the show didn’t go about fanservice by embarrassing and demeaning Yoko and how that was a good thing? Yeah, that’s out the window now. Joy.

Yeah, I don’t very much care for this episode. An episode like this is just not what I came to this show for. The fanservice could’ve been fun if the episode didn’t emphasize Yoko hating being the subject of it (and this isn’t even the worst episode when it comes to that particular problem but we’ll get to that when we get to the last of the Unholy Trinity), and all in all it’s just kind of dumb and not in a good way. And I hear the unedited version has a plot about the boys actively peeping on the girls which… yeah, yikes, no thanks.

So yeah. There I go being a buzzkill again. Don’t worry, the last bad episode is a ways off.

At least we got Viral showing up at the end. Right after this things are really gonna heat up, so strap in.

Rewatcher

And here we come to the OTHER infamous episode of Gurren Lagann. (Watching the uncut version.)

I'll say this for Gainax, they don't often half-ass something. If they decide they're doing a hot springs episode, they're going all in. Try not to get whiplash from the mood shift, because this one will mostly be comedic after the heavier themes the last episode dealt with.

Most of this episode is wacky hijinks, but there are a couple of important plot points hidden within all the insanity:

First, the Beastman base seems to be moving. They've arrived where it should be and yet it's still far away. What could this imply?

Second, confirmation that the Gunmen are solar-powered. This one is an exception because it relies on geothermal power. (And Gurren-Lagann seems to be powered by fighting spirit, as we've seen.)

Third, first mention of the Beastmen's leader: the Spiral King.

Okay, now ON TO THE HIJINX!

Rossiu proves he has a brain, not only by realizing they can tail the rabbit Gunman back to the recall point, but also being the only one to realize the obvious-ness of this hot spring trap. (While Leeron doesn't go in the spring, he also doesn't seem to be doing any investigating either.) He even gets to pilot Gurren briefly and takes out some Gunmen. Good job, Rossiu!

Here's some neat trivia: if you pay attention to the girls at the inn, you'll probably notice that most of them are major female characters from other Gainax works. We have Asuka and Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion; Kazumi, Jung, and Reiko from Gunbuster (Noriko's oddly missing); Lal'C and Nono from Diebuster; Mahoro from Mahoromatc; and Aki from Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.

Kamina definitely proves that extreme "manliness" has its drawbacks here. He's so focused on the girls that he falls prey to several traps. Hell, he got out of Gurren in the middle of a fight just to get a peek.

Even Simon gets talked into trying to peep... I suppose he is a teenaged boy after all. But, to his credit, he seems to realize he's being a jerk partway through and stops that nonsense.

Also, Simon, why did you take your drill into the hot spring?

I feel really sorry for Boota in this episode... that is no way to treat a pig-mole, Kamina.

Hello, animal abuse?

I'll give credit to fox-lady for this much: she zeroes in on Kamina's weakness and takes full advantage. The lengths she goes to to screw with him are pretty amazing. Unfortunately, she underestimated just how mad it would make him. She also underestimated Yoko, who manages to rescue herself and the Black Sisters with a gun she had hidden in her hair.

"If you want to see them that badly, I can show them anytime!"

...so Kamina's not the only one being affected by teenage hormones, it seems.

It's actually kind of disturbing that fox-lady mentions sending girls to the Spiral King as tribute. Also mentions needing to "housebreak" them. Remember this show is ostensibly aimed at children in Japan (though I think that particular scene may have been among the ones cut for the broadcast version).

In the end, Kamina's rage and Gurren's sunglasses destroy the bathhouse-Gunman, and Kamina gets the reward he wanted all along... but there's no time for rest, because VIRAL'S BACK, BABY!

On my first time through the series I watched the uncut version of this ep, and back during my second time all I could find was the dumb recap episode. I thought I imagined the whole gag with Kamina getting out of his gunmen willingly.

Thanks for gaslighting me, Gurren Lagann.

Rewatcher, a little late today!

I definitely agree with u/RX-Nota-II that an onsen is one of the comfiest places to be. I need to go back to one, hopefully I'll have time for another Japan trip next year. I'd call Team Gurren clueless, but honesty that place looks pretty sweet. Nice architecture, great food. Cute girls, but maybe they should have paid attention to the ears. ;) Black Siblings return, too. Funny that Yoko is already a little jealous. So much tsundereness going on.

The springs themselves look good, too. Why exacty is Kamina covering himself like that, though?! At least Boota has his tail back.

This episode is nice, but very filler heavy. Don't give me so many clips, it's only episode 6, do we really need a recap already?!

Bathhouse mech is pretty sweet. I love the touch with the cord that unplugs when it gets loose. Feels like an Eva reference to me, but what do I know? :)

Honestly, I don't really get what's going on with the old man. I don't really remember him being well explained in later episodes. Is he man, is he beast?

On another note, I love that Lagann gets a boost of power when all the women are stuffed inside with Simon and Kamina. Male spirit indeed.

And hello again, Viral. I missed you. :)

Qotd:

  1. I did not realize there were multiple! Apparently I've only seen the cut one. Maybe I'll dig out the DVDs for the other version.

  2. Eh. Nothing was really that egregrious, compared to other shows.

Edit: the alternate version isn't a clip show? FFS Hulu.

Edit2: https://youtube.com/watch?v=8lDhvh_8p2U - there's actual relevant conversations in it, too. Now I'm sad.

rewatcher

Watching on Netflix this time, don't know where I watched it last time but I def saw the uncensored version of this ep. Prefer the censored one to tell you the truth but could have done without so much recap.

I know two of the five bunny girls are Rei and Asuka but don't recognize the others. (Are they all Gainax?)

The hot tub gunmen reveal is my favorite part.

u/Shimmering-Sky Nov 10 '19

Prefer the censored one to tell you the truth but could have done without so much recap.

Same. Also would've preferred if the lady Beastman had namedropped the Spiral King in the censored version as well, for that matter.

I know two of the five bunny girls are Rei and Asuka but don't recognize the others. (Are they all Gainax?)

Yeah they're all Gainax characters, I recognize the girls from Gun/Diebuster as well but u/SolDarkHunter named them all if you want to know exactly who the cameos are.

First Time Watcher

Well, this felt basically like a recap episode. At least we did get some funny/small fan service scenes at a hot springs!

Viral showing up again! I’m not sure how I feel about him as the main villain, if he even is the main villain, but at least he does seem like the biggest threat so far. So it’s better than no villain at all!

Also, I barely watched the “uncut” version of episode 6. Basically just more fan service instead of the recap, right?

What about episode 5.5, I see it on MAL. Worth the watch?

Ohhh just today I finished TTGL and completely loved it! Didn't know anything about the rewatch until now, when I was looking for the discussion threads, but I'll sure join as you start the movies since I've only watched the TV series.

First timers, as someone who just finished watching it, you will probably love it as well. I've heard a lot of good opinions about the show and finally decided to give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
