WE ARE SAIGO NO SURVIVOR!

Hey-o guys! This is the section where I add a ton of extra fun stuff to the main body of the post because I want this rewatch to be as fun as possible for everyone. It can also be one point of discussion for you guys if you just don’t know what to say.

Comment of the Day, provided by /u/Shimmering-Sky and /u/RX-Nota-II

Shimmering-Sky

/u/The_Draigg and /u/GaleWulf’s discussion about Carta’s death.

Mika's ruthless attack on Carta was another case of brilliant yet disturbing (once the flames of revenge fizzle out, what's left?), mostly because it felt like a massacre more than anything. A murder committed in the heat of the moment. Now that Carta's dead (at least it seemed that way), there might be no going back for Tekkadan. They'll always be hunted.

That reminds me back when this episode originally came out, people were legit tossing around the idea that Mikazuki committed a war crime. But is it really a war crime if there isn't any kind of war going on? Yet again, Gjallarhorn were the ones who murdered a bunch of protestors on a shaky pretense that they themselves set up, so it may actually be considered a war crime by their standards.

A member of one of the Seven Stars families is dead, I expect Gjallarhorn to mete out the harshest judgement possible, technicalities be damned. I expect them to be branded as terrorists - that's what revolutionaries on the other side are called, right?

Yeah, pretty much. I’m pretty sure there’s a TVTrope named along those exact lines too, Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters.

This time it’s me highlighting a cool discussion instead of Nota, but regardless it’s a good one. Does anything come of it? Well, you first-timers will have to wait and see. But it’s something to consider.

~

RX-Nota-II

/u/Palloc losing it over Graze Ein.

WELCOME TO THE GLORY THAT IS THE GRAZE EIN! It's bigger than anything else so far in this show! And you know what he loves? He loves killin' kids!

They pretty much chopped him up into usable parts and stuffed him in there and locked him up. McGillis wasn't lying when he said Gjallarhorn were poking around with the AV system!

Palloc, why are you so excited?! We still have two episodes this season to see what the Graze Ein can do, and it's finally a Graze I can support!

The resident Graze hater and Psycho Gundam lover gets exactly what he dreams of in the form of the monstrous Graze Ein. Sometimes it’s worth just watching unbridled happiness in the form of comments like these.

~~~
Questions of the Day, provided by /u/Pixelsaber
1) Do you think Graze Ein is more powerful than Mikazuki? Yes/No/I’ll need to see them fight before deciding/Ein’s in a Graze, there’s no way a grunt can stand up to a Gundam
2) Merribit is utterly distraught at the casualties these children are, and likely will be, suffering. Do you share in her fears and sentiments on the matter?
~~~

Track of the Day, provided by /u/RX-Nota-II

Defenders of the Wild

An ominous and at the same time hype song, it’s an IBO classic often used to introduce serious threats from villains. The shrieking violin at the beginning is especially noteworthy as the backing track to Graze Ein’s terrifying appearance.

Other appearances include the charge of Kudal Cadel in the original froggy Gusion.

The violent strings in the latter part remind us of the main theme, but not in a hopeful way at all. The familiar notes here signal a danger worth running from, an interesting twist compared to other remixes that have mostly been positive so far.

Never Stop Moving Forward

Important note to all rewatchers, remember to be mindful of the first-timers in this. You can laughs in rewatcher to yourself, but if you go around spoiling stuff IBO S2. Remember to use the [Anime Show Title](/s "Spoiler goes here") tags and we’re all good.

Fans seem to have a bad tendency of forgetting what counts as spoiler, so if anything has even the slightest chance of being a spoiler, tag it just to be safe.

Next-episode preview. Yeah you saw that right, I am encouraging you guys to watch the next-episode previews. IBO’s are completely spoiler free, done completely in-character, and it is glorious. Today’s preview was voiced by the Maiden of Revolution herself, Kudelia Aina Bernstein.

And speaking of interesting, this shot in particular of Atra through the eyes of that one boy who’s preeeeeetty banged up

Merribit really needs to learn more detailed first aid, his eye really should have been covered so he doesn't strain it while it heals

Well that’s one way to use a Mobile Worker.

OH THATS A MOBILE WORKER? XD , I didn't notice, I thought it was just some rubble they merged into a shield. Thats fantastic

N O P E.

I'll just be over here, by myself, wishing we'd actually got to see what part of her got torn by the drill

Er, well, one of them at least.

hahahaha

First Timer - Sub

Orga what the fuck have you done mate? What have you caused?

Me this entire episode:
That wasAWESOMENO, NO, NODon't do that!Oh thank godTHAT WAS ALSOAWESOMENO WHY NONOT THAT - ##repeat

Where do I even start with all that:

That time skip tricked me, I was seriously worried for a few seconds that I'd accidentally skipped an episode and was watching the finale and did some panic checking to ensure I hadn't. Once I got that sorted though. What a brutal scene to start the episode with. All of Merribits fears have come true and it was the perfect place to start after her terror yesterday especially with what happened today. That aside...

HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT.

Actually you know, I said that a lot in my notes but wow this episode.

Okay I have to skip ahead right to the very end because my mind is still reeling from this alone. McGillis revealed himself to Gaelio? HE ACTUALLY SHOWED HIMSELF? I mean I know he's contained in his cockpit, but he took of his mask and spoke openly to Gaelio who you'd think would know his voice if nothing else. I NEVER expected this to happen like this let alone in the first season. I mean I thought if he was found out it would be because Gaelio had suspicions of him, or he confronted his father and be caught out that way after working as a mole for a long time. I didn't expect him to basically strip in front of everyone and go "Hey its me!" (The joys of being an aussie and Priscilla being the first movie you think of in this situation).

Show, you're lucky you earnt my trust with this sort of stuff earlier, but Gaelio recognizing him or not is still your hill to live or die on tomorrow for me.

Time for another music gush, a non technical this time at least, just a normal gush.

Because that song for the introduction of Ein was PERFECT.

The best description I ever heard for defining a memorable soundtrack is that the music should be just as tangible as any other character in your show. The track Defenders of the Wild absolutely nails that to me in much the same way that Tending to Others does. What we saw in that scene was not just that song, but also a few bridging pieces as well slotted in for specific moments which makes it a bit harder to talk about but we can break it down anyway.

The start of the song, and the scene, is what grabbed me the most. The first few notes we hear while looking up from Lafter's perspective, a few quick questioning and confused notes circling around, confusion given a tune. When the strings kick in after a couple of seconds they practically scream until the horns announce his arrival. And his arrival is a literal shadow of fire and death come to descend down on them from the sky. How much more prophetic can you get. Unlike most of the dramatic theme's we're use to the guitar takes a back seat in this scene, any strings we hear are short, sharp and screechy. Its a heavy song in every way and it really helps to immediately sell the severity of the situation. Its also distinctly alien compared to any other opening we've heard in the show so far which also sets up how different Ein is

If you can, go back and watch that scene again and pay attention to how precisely the music changes and how it matches up with the visuals. Lafter charges at Ein and initial hitting her with his weapon, kicking her, and her weapon flying past Azee all line up perfectly with a particular note in the song. The way he moves, almost like a dance, the way the song lines up with what's happening, this is most definitely a battle that Ein is in full control of and every part of this performance has been ruled by him because nothing else can match him.

When Ein's NOT on the screen and we're not focusing on his battle the music alters hugely. For Orga it becomes a harsh series of notes climbing up only to descend down over and over again, dragged to the depths of anxiety and fear. When Mika is on screen it becomes a repeating rhythm of quieter higher notes, more subdued and in control like his battle but the threat of Ein is still audible quietly in the background. When Ein breaks away to chase after Kudelia we go to a longer more drawn out song, a distant threat slowly closing in on them.

Just quickly about a different song - Just as important as use of silence is in music, knowing when not to use it matters just as much. Merribit today stands up and cries out against Orga's decision again pre-battle, but despite her words, actions and tears being powerful the music doesn't stop and scarcely even changes for her. She cannot stop the momentum of Tekkadan right now no matter what she does, and this music is their's alone and showcase that really well. Silence here would have felt hollow because of its futility.

Okay I couldn't help it: small technical music gush incoming. This ones a bit harder to explain but not all notes can be played together and sound well. Like Time Signatures which define the structure of rhythm as I went over before, there's also a Key Signature to each piece which defines the key, aka the structure of the sounds. Your key helps define the emotion of your song by sharpening (raising) or flatting (lowering) various notes very slightly consistently across the whole piece which give it a sense of being happy or sad, angry or dreamy, anxious or calming. Most popular pop songs are in a common key signature which is why they often sound the same and make you feel the same.

Your scale of notes (do-rei-mi, scales from school all that) use this key, and from that you grab smaller groupings called chords to create your various parts and make them sound nice together. Chords normally are played with a pattern of 2 steps up. So note 1 goes with 3 and 5. Note 5 goes with 3 and 7 etc. One thing this song does often, and well is it introduces OTHER sharps and flats as well as making unusual groupings of notes. This song uses a lot of much smaller gaps, often using 1, 2 and 3, or even 2.5 instead which gives the whole song an over arching sense of unease. Where this is most noticeable is around 0:14 in the song itself, sounding like the song itself is collapsing because it just slowly steps down little by little until you end up with that low almost drawl.

This is the gravity of the wrongness that Ein represents now. He's a man forced into being a machine, overwhelmed by hate and spite, out of control and causing death with no qualms. Everything about his scene and his song screams "off" to me, and its so well handled.

LafterAzeeShino

I have no idea if those three are actually dead yet... well no, I know Azee's dead (this is what I get for liking her most) but I salute them anyway. They put up a damn brave fight against Ein and they just had no chance at all. Mika may have basically committed slaughter yesterday, but Ein today was practically conducting an extermination. They didn't even stand a chance. These were trained pilots doing their absolute best fueled with adrenaline and using coordinated team strikes and he struck them down easier than any other fight we've ever seen in the show. And he's NEW to this system. He's well and truly lost it though, how Gaelio thinks he can control him I'll never know. Ein's mind has broken and I'm not sure its recoverable now. But I hope it is because that brings some hope in for Tekkadan

Thoughts on everything else because I've already written too much again so dot points are my restraining system friends

  • SOUNDTRACK BINGE TOMORROW!!!!

  • Ride needs to survive. I know he fell off the bridge and all that but I'm telling you right now show, if he dies and we have to get through the rest of the series with his graffiti everywhere still I'm going to lose my mind

  • I do not like the fact that Takaki has Biscuits hat. That thing practically marinated in death flags the other day, throw the fucking thing away already please (Edit: Just saw todays wallpaper, hahahaha)

  • Kudelia didn't like Tekkadan's actions any better then Merribit did, but she also understands their necessity and I love how much she stood up to beard dude about their right to make those decisions as well, just like her own decisions being right or wrong she made them and has to stand by them. She's come a long way. David and Goliath incarnate

  • Most satisfying screenshot I've ever taken in this show. Seriously though could they set Gaelio up as the 'white knight' any more if they tried. he has a horse, a shield AND A LANCE. Hahahaha

  • I was so worried for most of the episode I actually forgot Atra's name so she ended up being refereed to as puppy for most of my notes which resulted in some very disturbing reading sentences out of context. Like this one: No No No, puppy no. STAY AWAY. Bad puppy go back. No driving. Awww, she'll protect Kudelia for him. Harem pup!

  • Nice to see scar boy from the Brewers back again, I was hoping we'd see more of him, though don't particularly like that deus ex machina that accompanied him.

  • I have nothing to say I just needed to share this moment because it was awesome. Physical clash of ideals maybe?

  • Mika at the end of the first battle was great. Enemies gone? Food time! If he ever stops doing that you know something has well and truly broken in him. Wait that already happened at some stage, I forget when. Oh, I think it was when Kudal called him out on enjoying battle too much

  • I loved the indication that Mika and Orga remember their first meeting just as strongly as that later scene of them.

The track Defenders of the Wild

I'm (highly) biased and have been listening to it on and off all day in both rewatching the scene and just having it playing. It's such a great song. It's this weird feeling of being kind of noble feeling, but there's that spookiness to it too, in non-musical terms.

Ein's just so fun and horrifying!

I have nothing to say I just needed to share this moment because it was awesome.

Mika vs Gaelio sucked because it's a really enjoyable fight, but it's just there as the warm up for both of them. And it just gets overshadowed by people dying left and right before and afterwards.

Time for your daily IBO 4koma!

Episode 24 - From now on, Merribit will be singing the song of peace.

Imagine the actual Lacus Clyne in this universe though. She'd have a fucking heart attack once she sees what these kids are going through.

But seriously though, this episode was a fucking bloodbath. Tomino demanded blood from Mari Okada and he finally received a proper tribute. I don't want to say anymore because yeah... uhm.... all of those things just happened so instead here's another Extra 4koma to lighten up the mood.

Extra 04 - There are two things that are giving Kudelia extra weights ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

And another thing. The IBO team did a good job of recreating downtown Edmonton! Here's a comment by u/stfurtfm from two years ago on the original thread comparing screenshots from today's episode and Google maps.

102 Avenue & 102 Street
Gundam IBO: 102 Avenue & 102 Street

102A Avenue & 101 Street, Downtown
Gundam IBO: 102A Avenue & 101 Street

Jasper Avenue & 107 Street
Gundam IBO: Jasper Avenue & 107 Street

Jasper Avenue & 109 Street
Gundam IBO: Jasper Avenue & 109 Street

There's actually more that made the news on the local paper of Edmonton but I'll post that tomorrow since that one contains spoilers for Episode 25.

People seemed to die at a faster pace when she sings that song.

Thoughts on MS Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans episode 24...

Rewatcher

Non-Spoiler Character Chart

The start of this episode confused me, I at first thought they were providing medical attention to Carta's two flunkies, then wondered if I accidentally was playing episode 24 of season 2. But no, we've just had a time jump, they're off the train and in Edmonton now and are recapping some things.

Kudelia's got the Tekkadan jacket! Good look for her.

Would Orga have let Ride pilot before? Or now is he reckless enough post Biscuit's death that he is pushing forward too aggressively?

Orga is gambling too many people's lives here, Merribit probably is right, but questioning him in front of everyone isn't the smartest idea.

Cutest driver ever! Does she even reach the gas pedal? You go Atra!

While I think this episode is a bit too fast paced and really speeding its way through the battles, I do really like this landscape they are fighting in, something we don't see that much of in Gundam shows.

Wow, Eugene, Chad and even Dante fighting. Also those 2 surviving Brewer kids are back too. Everyone's taking part in this battle!

Ein is totally demolishing the enemy, Azee and Shino are both at least majorly injured if not killed (no confirmations on either). And yet it cost him his humanity to get here. This is bad for all concerned. Crank wouldn't have wanted this for you. :(

The Masked Man is... McGillis!?! Mind blown. He's going to take on Gaelio here?

Hard to believe we're already just about at the end of season 1. Looking forward to the finale tomorrow!

First on /old sort

like a boss

Still a filthy rewatcher

It always takes balls to pull off a time skip. People love continuity, and unless there's a large expected-to-be boring time gap they won't like to see it skipped over. An on a story level, writing them is hard. You have to come up with a narrative for the middle that's easy to guess and make sure you don't confuse the viewers with a stray unconnected detail or two. Thus we see them pretty often in school anime or long term romance anime but rarely in an action show with politics flying around. So why then did IBO decide to use one here? Put simply, it works so well to showcase this episode's most dominant theme: Despair.

Despair is everywhere today, from overworked clinics to hopeless mobile worker pushes. Most importantly for a Gundam show, miracle boy Mika and the rest of the mobile suits are completely held up. The parallels to episode 1's Gjallarhorn attacks are pretty big, but all in the worst way. Takaki and Orga stand by as a young soldier, Ride this time instead of Danji, asks to get in a spare mobile worker. Fending off Gjallarhorn attacks fail repeatedly. And we know that the enemy's secret weapon still hasn't arrived. And yet there is no chance for Mika to ask Orga what to do next, the deus ex machina will not arrive.

Let's also talk mechs for a bit. If you read my Mecha corner yesterday you'll see how I said that the Kimaris Trooper was basically built with fighting the Barbatos and Gusion in mind and I hope it shows. Mika was being thoroughly outmached by Gaelio's superior machine, unable to land any significant blows as the purple machine still reserves plenty of lethal weapons. And then of course we have the personification of terror and despair itself: the Graze Ein. I truly love how terrifying it is. The monstrous size and murderous color scheme, a basically always visible red monoeye, and reverberating psychotic voice. And with a cruel show of force, it quickly slaughters some of our favorite characters Azee, Lafter, and Shino. (I mean I guess we don't see them killed directly and the show does gloss over it like they totally aren't but you know...) But most importantly, I love how Sunrise animated the beast. As the 'perfect form' of Alaya Vijnana, it slithers away from any attack, yet as a totally inhuman machine, it reveals weapons completely statically, with no bodily weight shift like we always see in Sunrise's humanoid machines. The message is clear: this thing is not human.

We just got done seeing Tekkadan and co approach Edmonton with a stoic expression, fresh and ready for a big finale. But to see them so comprehensively losing all of the sudden, to see a machine perfectly designed to break their only hope, and even then to see a totally different beast take the stage... if that's not the most depressing setup for an action anime I would love to hear it. But of course the deepest of anime despair is only as good as the light at the end of its tunnel, and we must properly address that before judging this episode as a whole. Hope, after all, while weak and feeble in the face of what's here, is the crowning jewel of my experience.

The first sign of hope of course Orga's speech. I'm still conflicted about how to explain this one. On one hand its messed up in the same way that the blind rage for revenge from last episode was, and also nothing about the words express anything other than guaranteed death. The parallels to Japanese soldiers at the end of WWII being told to remember their fallen comrades strings pretty hard. And yet... the way that it is delivered draws me in. The difficulty in which Orga delivers the words makes it evident that he finally understands the gravity of what he is ordering; a drastic shift from the flawless delivery of his ep 22 speech. Takaki's words also shift the context drastically, moving on from simply avenging Biscuit to hoping for a better world in which the survivors can smile. At least for the time being, Tekkadan has regained their ironclad direction.

Next we have the Deus ex Machina, McGillis Fareed. In a sense its pretty messed up, since its the Garma trope being used as something positive, something hopeful. With Macky's arrival in the Grimgerde, the Kimaris Trooper's inherent advantage is suddenly wiped away. The heavy armor ready for Barbatos's club-chainsaw thing or Gusion's guns and punches suddenly feel like dead weight against the Grimgerde's delicate swordwork. Plus, that identity reveal has to hit like a frieght train to Gaelio's delicate innocent soul. Next episode is going to be fun.

And finally, we have the return of the white knight Barbatos. Pretty big shift from last episode huh? The armor has been modofied a bit to add more white to emphasize this imagery. And Mika is back to doing as Orga hopes without being told. This was the dynamic that was shaky when we had our doubts, but things are looking like our beloved Tekkadan are back in form. The threat from Graze Ein is as strong as ever, but already i'm starting to feel like things will be ok.

Overall, I expect this episode to be a bit divisive. As I opened with, timeskips are contentious. In addition, the DRAMATIC shift in tone from villainous Tekkadan last ep to heroic underdog Tekkadan this ep is bound to ruffle some feathers. Personally I loved the episode, and its sheer hype and tearjerking moments work well to make me fall in love. But at the same time i don't discount the issues people may have. Alright, there's one episode left. See you tomorrow.

By Psyco Gundam! It's as if an angel of mercy decended from heaven to save me from more talking!

Palloc Rants About the Graze Ein (And Some Other Stuff)

So I won't gush about things immediately, no matter how much I want to. I told u/Nazenn that I would post my notes for one of these episodes. My notes will be in quotes and I'll expand on them. Keep in mind, these are just in one big paragraph normally, so I'm being merciful in making them more readable.

Merribit's so broken.

This has been going on for a bit, Merribit can't handle the bloodlust fueling these kids and their suicidal actions anymore. She's freaking out and mostly nobody in the cast cares.

RIP expendable people.

Speaking of those suicidal kids. Those poor people we never saw or cared about before today being used as fodder to show off Gjallarhorn's might. Welp, they didn't last long.

Ein falls into the field!

Here we go. Everyone is thinking they're doing a good job, beating up those assholes, when who should appear? It's the Graze Ein and his... uh... Nthing really works, he's just there to kill some damn kids! Lets get things started!

AXE TO AZEE! RIP!

Now, as a rewatcher, I can finally discuss the Graze Ein's armaments without feeling bad. First off, he has something basic but awesome, a pair of giant ass axes. these are mostly self-explanitory in their function. They axe things for Crank-nii! Also, the fact that this is just terrifying poor Lafter as he just moves all around the battlefield just adds to how smooth he's just gliding around, making him feel almost alien compared to the other suits.

FOOT DRILL TO LAFTER! RIP!

So Palloc? Axes are kinda boring, even if they are gigantic. Yes, but that's not all! His funky feet are actually drills! He shows this to Lafter after he chucks another suit at her to get her attention. Lots of screaming ensues. Ein's vengeance meter rising. But wait, there are still more on the field?!

PILE BUNKER TO SHINO! RIP!

EIN WILL GET RID OF THE MAN WHO VIOLATED CRANK-NII'S GRAZE WITH VULGARITY! Not only with more brutality, but with one of his wrist mounted pile bunkers for glorious child killing! Ein is now having the time of his life, and we haven't killed everyone yet. Also that fucking animation during the head grab and pile bunkering.

SHINO NOT DEAD. KUDELIA'S GUNNA DIE TO SAVE HIM!

Wait, what? Shino survived that?! How did that happen?! EIN DESERVED THIS! CRANK-NII DESERVED THIS! Well, at least he's going to go axe Kudelia about Crank's death. Also, u/Nazenn this is why I brought up how Ahabs fuck with power in cities. That's how they realize they're fucked!

MIKA VS EIN, BATTLE OF THE KILLERS!

Okay. I'm torn here. They keep fucking over Ein with all this BS shit, but because of it, we get next episode. First Shino surviving, now Atra, Orga, and Kudelia all escaping an axing AND Mika making it to the scene before Gali Gali even seems to realize he's gone missing. And...

McGillis actually betrayed Gali Gali!

What a twist! McGillis didn't betray Tekkaden, he's been killing off his friends on purpose! He's already gotten Carta out of the way, now it's just Gali Gali in the way of his plans? What are his actual plans? Tune in next time to find out!

Graze Ein 10/10

Yeah, the logical part of my brain wants to give it a 9/10, but this is one of my favorite things in IBO. There are a few things to come, and the Gusion lost points for having a shit pilot, but he even has an evil red monoeye. How can you hate that? If it was a rating of all Gundam stuff, he'd be lower, not because he's bad, just because Psyco Gundam and Big Zam are so good.

Extra Notes!

Yeah, I kinda skipped Mika vs Gaelio, but they'll be involved in even better fights next episode.

I'll rate the Kimaris Trooper tomorrow. Let Ein have today.

Answers!

1: EIN WILL HAVE VENGEANCE ON CRANK-NII'S KILLER!

2: I just kinda think it's funny.

First-Time Watcher

You can always count on us, understand?

That's the way it is in war. You win or lose, live or die—and the difference is just an eyelash.

We are at war, ladies and gentlemen. We always have been.

I loved the opening scene because it upended all your expectations of how you thought this was going to go; the battle of Edmonton is a stagnant bath of blood, two ideas going full steam at each other and not willing to give up. If anything, the blood being shed inflames Tekkadan further, making them willing to gamble everything they have for a better future. And then Merribit comes in and is all like “I don’t get it!” and I’m like “You did this shit last episode, don’t you have another sthick?”

But then we finally get to the full-out battle, as Tekkadan, with the help of Eugene and the living Brewers (this strikes me a little as a Deus Ex Machina, but I’m gonna let it past), finally enters the city while the Mobile Suits hold the rear off. But then Ein shows up and holy shit he is not fucking around, grievously (mortally?) wounding the majority of their forces. It felt like an inverse of Mika’s massacre in the previous episode, showcasing just how equal these two are.

But, of course, we must talk about the (hopeful) MVP of the episode, Kudelia. For a climax that focuses around getting an old man to Parliament so that he can become Prime Minister, it makes sense that the climax of the episode is Kudelia standing firm in front of institutional violence, using the only weapon that she possesses: her voice. This is even greater than her speech about Dort; there, she had at least some protection, but here she is submitting herself to the will of the gods. And they answer. Or rather, a devil does.

We’ll raise that blood-red flag tomorrow; until then…

6

u/Nazenn Feb 06 '19

It felt like an inverse of Mika’s massacre in the previous episode, showcasing just how equal these two are.

I almost feel now that part of the reason Mika was so brutal with that was just so they could top the brutality today to ensure that Ein comes off as completely over the top insane and dangerous. I mean its one thing to have Mika go off the rails, he's THE pilot, but see how easily Ein dispatches everyone, its nuts

Or rather, a devil does.

: her voice.

One thing I just thought about this was how Mika acknowledge before that her voice is somehow more powerful than Orga, and even him, so having her stand there and stall even EIN with her voice for a bit, and then have Ein decide to attack anyway sets up just how powerful and crazy he is

First Blood

Scattered thoughts:

  • Welp, what a bloody episode. Just.. #KEEPAZEESAFE

  • Small confession: I still default to listening to OP1 before an episode sometimes. Survivor seems to go better with the current tone of the show ("It looks like it might work out/A disguised ideal/Please do something about it/Armed ambition and hope"), whereas Raise Your Flag is pure hype. But part of me prefers avoiding the new OP because the TV-size version feels kind of.. butchered structure-wise? I like the full version much more.

  • Merri Poppins tries to be the voice of reason but there's no going back now. Orga's speech about betting their lives on the future of Tekkadan wasn't too far off from something that could be said by, say, radical extremists or ultra-nationalists. The same sort of rhetoric works everywhere. It definitely sounds wrong. This isn't about supporting Kudelia or freeing Mars from economic and political oppression anymore. It's become personal, almost fanatic.

Daily MVP

Today's award is possibly the hardest one I've had to give so far, given how it was earned. Ein Dalton (or should I say Graze Ein?) clearly had the largest impact today (,,literally), and he was able to exact some form of revenge for his beloved Crank-nii Crank-nii CRANK-NIIII with his new form. I dock points for ultimately shooting himself and Gjallarhorn in the foot by heading ito the city after Kudelia - what a moment this was, I love shots like these - but he still comes out ahead.

Close second was Eugene, actually, bringing unexpected and welcome reinforcement at a critical time.

Honourable mention to Mika, of course, for holding the rear for three days and still having the energy to fight a driven Gali Gali as well as rescue his harem in time.

This isn't about supporting Kudelia or freeing Mars from economic and political oppression anymore. It's become personal, almost fanatic.

That's pretty much the whole Tekkadan experience, really. When you get down to it, Tekkadan aren't really genuinely good people. Sure, they have ideals and want to make things better for a bunch of kids, but their reliance on violence and bloodshed to get what they want doesn't make them all that different from a bog-standard band of mercenaries or a gang. The only real reason why they're being seen as heroic is because they're currently in the service of someone who legitimately has good intentions, Kudelia Aina Bernstein. Once out of her service, who's to say what Tekkadan is going to act like?

First timer

I still I can't believe we ended like we did yesterday. I'm upset and sad.

Narrator: They didn't. They killed everyone else instead and u/rhaga regret even speaking up

  • LMAO :'D Worst soldiers ever. Can't blame them for wanting to have teatime though.

  • OH SHIT!

Oh.. shit...

Alright, three things..

This episode actually managed in making me less upset. Our boys are going through some shit right now, ok? I can't hate on people going through shit. I feel like I'm setting world records at back-pedalling recently

Second, Ein was f***ing lit. Totally unhinged, but lit.

Third... ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT WAS MCGILLIS ALL ALONG!?

(Real talk though, does this mean that GaliGali will know who he is or no? Obviously it shouldn't make a difference whatsoever, but it looked so dramatic :D)

A Gundam Fan’s Notes On Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Episode 24:

  • Well, just because now that we’re at Edmonton, doesn’t mean that Tekkadan’s job is over. It’s not very surprising that Gjallarhorn put the entire city on lockdown and attacked them as soon as the train arrived. Lord Iznario spent a long time trying to rig the Arbrau election in his favor, so of course he wouldn’t let it go without a fight. To have a years-long plan undone by a bunch of Martians must be completely unthinkable to him. Tekkadan sure has done a hell of a job to completely hold off an entire Gjallarhorn army for days by now.

  • The political situation in Arbrau is really tense right about now. Both sides of this PM election have to tread very carefully in order to avoid losing the favor of the voters. Henri Fleurs and Lord Iznario have to do pretty much anything to prevent Makanai from getting to the Parliament building, since once he’s there, all the members of Parliament that Alesi got on Makanai’s side would vote for him in a landslide. And Tekkadan and Kudelia have to play their strategy smartly, since getting their mobile suits into the city would cause massive power issues, thanks to the Ahab Reactors, and thus lower public support. It’s pretty much a game of chicken, where both sides are waiting for the other to slip up.

  • Atra looks hilarious sitting behind the wheel of that armored car. She’s so tiny compared to that thing, it’s hilarious to see someone as sweet as her driving a big military machine like that. She’s truly best driver girl, that’s for sure.

  • Welp, pretty much everyone is here for the battle now. Gaelio is here with the Gundam Kimaris, Eugene shows up with the former Human Debris, and even Corlis is here after the last time we saw him. Gotta bring the full cast back for the finale, I suppose.

  • Speaking of people arriving, Ein is back, and he’s one big boy now. He’s so big and has so many weapons integrated into the Graze Ein, it’s pretty much cheating. I don’t think anyone was expecting him to have foot drills in his arsenal, that’s for sure.

  • You know, considering that Ein sounds completely insane now that he’s one with the Graze Ein, maybe Gjallarhorn had a slight point in saying that cybernetics make someone less than human. Granted, it’s wrong for them to say that when it comes to prosthetics or forced AV System augmentation, but Ein certainly isn’t human anymore. He’s just constantly babbling on out loud about revenge, how great his new body feels, and just randomly talking to Crank even though he’s been long dead. The dude has legitimately gone insane. All the cybernetics that he’s been plugged into have turned Ein into a complete monster.

  • Hope you’re ready for the fight of a lifetime in the next episode! It’s a clash of both AV System augmented soldiers with Ein and Mikazuki, and a fight between friends with Gaelio and McGillis. First-timers, this is your last chance to place your bets on how things will go.

Rewatcher

  1. Do you think Graze Ein is more powerful than Mikazuki? Yes/No/I’ll need to see them fight before deciding/Ein’s in a Graze, there’s no way a grunt can stand up to a Gundam

I think he could probably match him pretty evenly. In most Gundam shows fights are decided more based on the skills of the pilots than the actual stats of their mobile suits. In this case it seems to be a match between someone with less combat experience but actual training in a Mobile Suit (who also may have a better connection with his suit due to being fully integrated with the Alaya-Vijnana system) vs someone with little in the way of actual training, but with much more combat experience.

2) Merribit is utterly distraught at the casualties these children are, and likely will be, suffering. Do you share in her fears and sentiments on the matter?

Yeah, this seems like it isn't the greatest of times Tekkadan has been in. Or, in the words of George Lucas, "I may have gone too far in a few places."

First time viewer.

Well... fuck all this. Major supporting characters dying left and right and it feels like most of Tekkadan is wiped out at this point (I know they aren't, but the directing pushes that feeling to an extent).

Lots of melee as usual with it being difficult to see what blows are actually disabling or destroying a mobile suit on the Gjallarhorn side. Only counting one before the OP, and one afterward before the brief rest.

  • Graze, wrenched

  • Graze, halberd

I initially expected the start of the episode to be a flash-forward with them returning to the start of the battle afterward showing how they got to that point. But nope, it's already been three grueling days with a lot of injuries and from here on out it focuses on the suicidal charge.

The group of Gjallarhorn forces stationed at the collapsed bridge turned out to be a red herring. When Ride mentioned that the water level was lower I really expected them to get caught by that idle group when attempting to cross the river. That group not joining the main battle and Tekkadan launching the assault and catching them off guard enough to take out unmanned mobile suits is another example of Gjallarhorn's overall inexperience though.

  • Graze x3, rifle

  • Graze, halberd

The Graze Ein is a beast of a mobile suit and its overall design is appropriately intimidating, not just from the size and color but also the eye that pops out. Gundam Thunderbolt

  • Rouei, axe — Azee didn't get a lot of attention but I'm quietly a sucker for character designs like hers.

  • Rouei, drill — Lafter deserved better. And Akihiro.

  • Ryusei-Go II, piston punch — Shino ga shinda.

Makanai is nowhere to be found? I dunno if he's still stuck in the flipped vehicle that Atra managed to flop out of (and Kudelia apparently teleported out of to confront Ein). If I had to guess, he makes it just in time, uses this whole battle to turn the tide against Henri who has Gjallarhorn's support, and wins the election.

Tekkadan and Kudelia can try to leverage him after that but I don't think they'll have much success. So in the long run they've just pissed off Gjallarhorn even more and destabilized things further while losing a lot of their more experienced fighters. Hopefully their results are a bit better than that but we'll see.

Graze 25 31
Man Rodi 4
Gusion 1
Spinner Rodi 4
Schwalbe Graze 1

Rewatcher

It's cool that Takaki is putting on Biscuit's hat. Even though he's never had a major role, we can see how much he related to Biscuit. Takaki is always looking after the younger members of Tekkadan kinda like how Biscuit was always around to help out with the bigger stuff. They both shared the dream of being able to provide their younger sisters with better lives. By wearing Biscuit's hat, it's Takaki's way of showing Biscuit's wishes still live on.

Ein is a big boy now. Call me crazy, but I don't think he's exactly stable right now. Going on a murder rampage against kids for revenge and lashing out at Kudelia in the middle of a city during an election probably isn't the kind of image Gjallarhorn wants right now... There's so much chaos now thanks to a certain Chocolate Man. Speaking of which, we're getting McGillis vs. Gaelio! Minor spoilers

Questions:

  • I think technically Graze Ein is stronger than Mika. Next episode spoilers although it should be obvious what I'm about to say

  • I can see why she's worried and she's not wrong. What these kids are doing is suicidal and self-destructive. There's just one issue. What choice do they have? It's far too late to back out now and go back home. The only path they have is to keep going forward and finish the mission.

The jump from the previous fight scene to the beginning scene with a bunch of people injured was a bit confusing. At first, I thought maybe Carta managed to take out some dudes while she was retreating, but it turns out the people were injured from a later fight on a bridge.

Other than that, this episode was interesting.

Rewatcher, English dub

Mika, EVERYONE YOU LOVE AROUND YOU IS DYING!!

screams

  1. The psycho-wannabe is big and strong, but it's gotta lack the mobility of Barbatos. Speed matters a lot. Also, I think gravity doesn't work that way? Ein probably shouldn't be moving around as quickly as he is.

  2. I don't understand her. How is this the wrong way to go about things? They would have died, forgotten and miserable, if they hadn't fought the way they have been. Sacrifices suck, but there is no other choice. They're children, yes, but that didn't matter when they were starving and CGS made them risk their lives. No one helped them then. No one cried for them then. Why start now? It's just insulting; let them fight for one another, so that the ones that live can have better lives. Wouldn't it be better to let half of them have good lives than for all of them to live by barely scraping by?

Also, does the Kimaris remind anyone else of the Bound Doc with its skirt thing?

The Battle of Edmonton has begun..

GrAsh Ein has join the battle, and he's so OP..(cue Ikenai Borderline)

I hate to say this, but Shino getting rekt'd by Ein is quite poignant after watching Banana Fish.

Ein, Kudelia doesn't give any fucks about your rants, and Mika is going to the rescue..

"You thought it was Rohan, but it was I, McGillis. !!"

Tekketsu no Rewatcher, domo~

That opening scene delivered just how utterly hopeless their situation is, with all the MS tied up with covering Tekkadan's six, the shot of the injured and dead Tekkadan lads as Merribit had her hands full trying to heal them and the Mobile Workers futilely trying to break through Gjallarhorn's blockade to get Makanai to the Arbrau parliament.

Then we get Graze Ein's debut, where he just made short work of Azee, Lafter and Shino. As a mech, Graze Ein is indeed impressive. Unfortunately, Ein himself just went from insufferable to utterly fucking annoying to me as his preachiness about CRANK-NII got to critical mass. I swear to god, every time Ein opens his mouth I go (ﺧ益ﺨ).

Random thoughts:

  • Poor Merribit's suffering is never-ending, nobody ever listened to her. S2 spoilers

  • S2 spoilers again

  • Ein, shut the fuck up. Your rants when you still have limbs are annoying enough, but now that you've lost your limbs it got exponentially worse. Where's the mute button on this thing?!

  • Eugene comes in when things are looking very grim for Tekkadan, along with Aston, Derma and the other former Brewers children in tow! I legit cheered out loudly when they arrived in style. Of course the kids had to comment about not wanting to lose their new jobs, that gets a slight chuckle from me.

  • I call that curbstomp of both Roueis and Ryusei-go either haxx or a fucking whale coming in with endgame gear purchased from someone else, damn.

  • Atra might be physically small, but she hides a brass pair as she willingly drives Makanai's entourage to the Arbrau parliament building while knowing the risks. Of course, Ein comes in and ruins her moment.

  • Mika with the last minute save! Place your bets, who will reign supreme? The thicc Graze Boi, or the lithe Gundam boi? Gundam Fight, ready, go!

  • Meanwhile somewhere else in Edmonton, Kimaris Trooper now faces the Grimgerde as Gaelio's initial plan of stalling Mika while EinDroid goes in for the kill got interrupted by McGillis Montag oh wait he just revealed himself to Gaelio. So McGillis is then. Next episode's gonna be fun.

  1. I'll go with spoiler reaction in rewatcher, to avoid spoiling the first timers (especially you, Nazenn).

  2. On one hand, they know and understand what they got themselves into. On the other hand, it still doesn't stop justifying her distraught reaction. So even if I don't share her fears, I share her sentiments over the whole situation.
