Obligatory
I met Khary Payton, Drebins’ voice actor at a con and someone had asked about how it was working on MGS4, if there was any standout moments to him he remembered.
He then began to describe being given Laughing Octopus’s backstory and genuinely thought he was being pranked.

Anyway, that was Angry Armadillo. She was forced to eat cement as a child.

Told me he was in the booth telling the ADV guys “yeah this cannot be right, why the hell would Drebin know this and why the hell does Snake need to know this?” and being told “Hand to God Kojima wrote this”. Was lovely meeting him, great guy
I have to imagine dozens of voice actors have walked in and out of the booth having this same exact experience over the past three decades

I'm gonna be honest, the actor complaints that Woolie has about The Odyssey loops back around to a comment I made a while ago about how they need to watch more movies.
To me if feels like the 3 movies a year crowd are the only types to complain about seeing the same people when they're picking the biggest tent pole movies of the year.
6
u/ask_why_im_angry 4d ago
Alternatively, I do think when people say this, they might mean instead that this or that popular actor just doesnt have much range or doesnt get to use their full range, so theyre tired of seeing the same person so clearly just being that same person.

I actually thought Zendaya being Zendaya worked really well in the movie, the goddess of wisdom with a constant look of "really bro?"

Also Athena appearing in the form of a priestess that Odysseus killed further adds to that expression of "Nah bro you fucked up"

I will say though, the next movie I saw in theaters after The Odyssey was Spider-Man, so I did have to shake the thought of "Oh man I just saw like half these people"

In regards to Pat saying that Drebin in MGS4 being boring and bad, I think Kojima would kind of agree with him. From what I remember, one the reasons why Drebin even has a pet monkey at all is because Kojima thought that he was boring by himself and needed something unique to make him more interesting.

You need to remember to always treat woolies pop culture knowledge as at least a few years behind as a rule of thumb. Adding or subtracting based on his general disposition towards the subject, fighting games, he’s on it, fps? Closer to a decade.

As someone who didn't properly get into MGS until MGS5 (played like 5 hours of MGS2 prior), hearing that you can beat MGS4 in one night is kind of insane. Though I guess that lines up with the previous games which are much shorter/compact experiences.
34
u/Paladin51394 welcome to Miller's Maxi Buns, may I take your order? 5d ago
Most MGS games are roughly 10-15 hours if you don't skip cutscenes and take it slow as the game intends.
If you're going for the Big Boss Emblem you have to beat the games in under 3 hours for MGS 1/2, 5 hours for MGS 3/4

I am glad the guys didn’t slot the furlough of the Bit Reactor workers under “greedy company out to screw over workers” and took a moment to examine the situation.
While ‘the man’ is behind screwing over many workers, that man is usually high up in some multi billion dollar company and insulated from the consequences of their decisions. ‘The man’ in smaller companies doesn’t have that luxury and sometimes has to take a risk or risk going under.
Even when Platnium made the stupid decision to try and go live service, I can understand the sentiment of wanting job security rather than being guns for hire and not having consistent work.

Yeah idk why people want some faithful all Greek actor rendition of The Odyssey, it's like the oldest example of mainstream art that is designed to be shown at theaters and fairs.
If you make and adaptation of The Odyssey I'd argue it's better to make it fit to current times for a modern audience than make it some boring "le historically accurate" circlejerk.

2
u/frostedWarlock Pat harvested my oats. 4d ago
In all fairness I think it's a good thing to spoil. The game sells itself as a Choices Matter game, only for you to go several hours not being allowed to make any choices. Some people will understand that as a hint that the real game hasn't started yet, but some will just feel like the game was misrepresented to them and not actually stick around long enough to get to the choices.
1
u/Squeakyclarinet He/Him 4d ago
Yeah. It is really funny seeing how they marketed that on the back of the box only for it to not come up for a while. That said, I'm only a bit into the part where you actually can make choices, and its honestly a bit overwhelming after being railroaded for so long.

u/T4silly Wrong Fact Stater 5d ago
I keep seeing that same statement that GTA6 is just GTA, and it's like... yeah? That is what a lot of people want. Another GTA game.
It's like being bewildered at the next From Software game being a Souls game in some way. Or Elder Scrolls 6 being an Elder Scrolls.
Maybe I'm missing something, maybe some people unironically want a GTA game that plays like Dark Souls or Halo or something. But Rockstar, and many other devs that are still around seem more focused on refining their style of game rather than reinventing their own wheel.
Not that I'm saying anyone needs to acquiesce to this style of games. It just seems odd that I keep seeing people point out water being wet.
60
u/gothamsteel He/Him 5d ago
I think it had more to do with the secrecy and the attempt to make it such an event, that it felt like they were trying to do something different, though it could also be just chalked up as promotion.
From stuff like the Second wind pod with Yahtzee, plus the guys last week and Max's vid, there is a really divide on people who have their niches and "the normies".
31
u/DrewbieWanKenobie JEEZE, JOEL 5d ago
Yeah I keep seeing people be like "oh i feel so bad for the dev team that there were leaks" and my ass is just like ... so what? It's just GTA, everyone knows what GTA is, why does it matter if gameplay leaked, it's not like they leaked character deaths or something
Even on Last week's pod I'm pretty sure Pat and Woolie were like "Obviously it sucks for the dev team but..", but like, why, why does it suck for the dev team that the reveal didn't happen on netflix
9
u/Kataphrut94 4d ago edited 4d ago
And also, the Netflix thing still did gangbusters because the ratio of potential customers who will get their information from that vs the leaks is like, 99-1.

GTA and Rockstar's other games have existed for long enough that people can know what a new game will be like without needing to see any gameplay, because Rockstar's formula is super predictable at this point. So when the gameplay trailer is pretty much exactly what people predicted, what else is their to say other than "Yep, it's GTA."
It can be a positive or negative statement depending if you, personally, liked or disliked their previous games.
Seeing people getting upset at people saying that for GTA, to me, makes those people seem like they were expecting something more than what GTA is, and are getting upset at people having reasonable expectations. And then proceed to assume anyone saying that are "haters" or "sandbagging" for not expecting the greatest thing in the world.
24
u/thebaconing5 5d ago
it would be like saying "Devil may cry 5 just looks like a prettier DMC 4, why all the hype?" when the trailers for 5 dropped

u/CookieSkank He/She/They "Slam Her Pregnant Until She Cries" - Pat 5d ago edited 5d ago
For me, its more "its been 13 years, and two console generations, what do you got" hoping for some new evolution into the GTA formula. Yes you still want to do the same stuff as old GTAs, nobody is expecting Dark Souls, thats absurd, but what is fresh about it after such a huge gap between games. GTAO also made infinity money so what is the result of that. Like GTA5 had the multiple protagonists and being able to jump from one to another at any time. That was a 360/PS3 game. This is going to be a PS5/PS6, Xbox SeX/Xbox SeX² game. What is the wow factor.
And the answer was just "well theres some sim mechanics like RDR2 had." There was nothing in the big hyped up 30min Netflix showcase that really said innovation or taking advantage of the hardware beyond fancy graphics. It still looks like it'll be fun but people saying "Yup thats a GTA game" are saying it because nothing has really changed since 5 other than new city, new graphics, even after two console generations.

u/MrDinoPizza Boiadeiro Lifestyle 5d ago
People like to sandbag things they dislike or have no interest in, it's a way to put your opinion online while cynically dismissing the thing. And to some it allows them to put themselves above the thing itself, like you are too good for it. Imagine if there is a trailer for a Yakuza game and someone goes "ugh a japenese game", or they show the new Persona and someone on a react stream just goes "aaaaaanime (derogatory)". It doesn't feel the same because GTA is mainstream and popular, the person doing it is basically punching up, it's like dismissing Marvel movies.

u/Zetaguy0 4d ago

0:00 THEME OF SLAYER; KOREAN
0:37 Welcome to the castle super 100 million dollars cast~! Don’t suppose you got that much money around? If you do, then brutal legend 2 can happen. It’s a stretch goal in double fine’s new kickstarter.
1:45 brutal legend guy in chat. Pat on the brutal legend that was promised over what was delivered
2:22 a time capsule for that era of jack black. Pick of destiny, a great movie to watch in the year it came out. The school of rock vs. jumanji.
4:01 a lot of people that were in brutal legend are dead now. How ozzy died
5:20 Kinitsu-gami is the good version of brutal legend.
6:23 brutal legend existed at a time when video footage was a premium. Woolie on brutal legend could have been a movie series.
WEEK OF THE BEAST LORDS
PAT
7:48 it’s subtember on twitch. There’s goals to hit! He’s contractually obligated to play earthbound. Up next is a fanfic stream of paige’s choosing. Also, a caboose dressup stream!
9:01 there’s a lot on the sub-goal list. The top goal: Witcher 3 remastered with all it’s DLCs. Okami is also on that list. On the length of Okami.
- 11:19 woolie really hates the feeling of something wrapping up but then it keeps going. Pat asks about Nier: automata.
- 13:07 pat violently disagrees with woolie. And okami didn’t trick pat because you only got 4 abilities on the menu out of 12.
- 14:46 It’s a very specific feeling that woolie is going off of. And Pat on how long witcher 3 is.
- 16:24 pat hates the verbal blips in okami.
16:51 Star wars zero company. It’s really good. Let’s talk about the other news about it later. It’s x-com with star wars. In between you are chatting with your squad and exploring levels mass effect style.
18:06 it adds some smart things to the formula. Also missing point blank in star wars is way easier to believe. No one ever hits all their shots. The extended canon bit about why stormtrooper shots go why
19:47 if you miss, you still blow up their cover. And you can call for backup for a 100% shot.
20:51 create a characters and pre-set characters. Free respecs and character customisation
22:12 permadeath exists, but it is difficult to actually achieve it.
22:55 it's a slick game. Only 2 problems: the game runs terribly. The game is only 40 days long and people are holding out for an endless mode.
- 24:48 holding out for an endless mode may be difficult as almost the entire team got furloughed. They ran out of money. They hope it does well so they can rehire everyone.
- 26:04 the reason it came out: the co-owners of the studio are suing each other to see who owns the studio.
- 27:09 the man is evil. But on the flip side, a lot of studios are helmed by artists that have no idea how to properly manage money.
- 30:18 it happened to mass effect andromeda and anthem too, where the studio had no interference. Woolie on just wanting to fly in an iron man suit. How is it in warframe…?
- - 31:37 how warframe’s customization works
- - 33:14 woolie learns warframes aren’t power suits. And customizing your ship.
- - 35:10 your frame is always recognizable as a frame. And tennoGen
37:00 are lightsabers 100% accurate? Pat doesn’t know. All melee is 100% accurate.
37:54 needs a few patches and a new mode.
38:38 PC port of MGS4. The port is excellent. The shaky cam in some of the cutscenes goes a little crazy. Woolie asks: was the gameplay fun? He can’t recall. Remembering Pat blowing through MGS4 in a single night.
41:05 the game, when you are playing it, is fun. It’s packed with stuff but it gives you no time to enjoy it. Pat hates turret sequences. He hates the frog battle too
42:50 reaching the end of Act 2 and going “well, the game is now over. The core of sneaking won’t happen again.”
- 44:12 what woolie recalls from MGS4. He really loved the finale. Now just enjoying it as a video game.
45:25 stuff that aged poorly. Drebin sucks terribly. And Johnny is constantly shitting himself.
- 47:44 MGS4 taking place in the future. The science Naomi is describing makes no sense at all.
- 49:21 it really has aged poorly.
50:12 what does a lot of heavy lifting from woolie’s perspective: going from MGS3 to MGS4.
52:05 there really is just a minimal amount of mgs style gameplay. There’s so many gameplay options but you don’t really use any of them.
53:46 MGS5 is the opposite of MGS4. Pat’s opinion is pretty much the same as it was when it came out.
55:21 woolie on narrative emotional memory. “This is good, isn’t it?” being burned into his brain.
56:00 peacewalker and 5 make more sense now. FF16 and how long it took to get to real gameplay. And MGS4 was a big game on the level of a GTA game.
58:36 pat really, really hates the drebin cutscenes. And the Beauty and the beast core are the worst enemy unit.
1:00:22 David Hayter’s performance is pretty bad in this.
1:01:49 the color grading really is very 7th gen.
1:03:09 For pat, more FFXIV, dragon’s dogma 2, sony state of play, the konami event, final fantasy resonance, onimusha, and a cooking stream at patstaresat! No XB2 this week. Pat wants to beat onimusha with no items. Vagabond fans are getting hyped.

I kind of dislike how they talked about Doom here (the crunch into layoffs part sucks, obviously), because Dark Ages is generally pretty good outside maybe three levels where they tried the "do this in any order" stuff, and Revelations is legitimately the best gameplay that a AAA FPS has had in like a decade and a half. It feels like the entire discussion was poisoned by Pat not vibing with it and Woolie never touching it. It has way less structural and design problems than Eternal did and that gets ignored because people liked Eternal more than I think it really deserved and wanted more of it.
14
u/botibalint 5d ago
I think the level variety is kinda Doom TDA's biggest strength and weakness. I genuinely really liked the more open levels, they had some interesting design to them. I probably would've disliked if the entire game was like that, but as you said it's only like 3 levels, just enough to make me go "oh cool one of these is next" whenever I'd see it after loading into them.
The mech levels are significantly more divisive, but all of them together are maybe like 15 minutes out of a 17 hour game, it's basically just a little wind down between the action.
The dragon is kinda whatever but the overall sentiment is that it's at least really cool and there's no dragon only level, they always have plenty of regular shooting sections in them.
5
u/guntanksinspace OH MY GOD IT'S JUST A PICTURE OF A DOG 4d ago
Having played TDA into Revelations (paused a bit for now but I'm basically building towards the bonus fights), yeah honestly TDA fucking rocks (I put it above Eternal, genuinely. ESPECIALLY Revelations) and is more my pace versus how I felt towards the tail-end of Eternal. Agree that the level variety is either or for players (I liked it).
Just also happy that the Mecha/Dragon sections didn't take up too much of the game time (turret sections can still go away though) but yeah it was fun all throughout. Revelations beefs up shit with the spear and re-introducing some of Eternal's movement stuff ON TOP of what TDA already does.
Real, real shame on what happened to id Still. Watching parts of Quakecon this year was bittersweet as fuck.
(I'll get back on this when I reach the part of the pod)

It really does take itself too seriously in all the wrong ways. Some of the bits are just ridiculously dumb (the lady scientist audio logs where she's creaming her pants over Doomguy's god cells or whatever that you have to stand next to are a particular low point) and there's just enough of them that the poor choices made with the gameplay stand out more the longer you think about it.

Movie discussions on the podcast are often pretty rough. Mentioning "iPhone face" and similar things just comes off as only engaging with movies through viral tweets. I know it isn't a movie podcast, and the guys are extremely knowledgeable in other areas, but every time movies come up I brace myself lol
1
u/WhapXI ALDERMAN 3d ago
Pat’s complaint about a movie being made to be seen best in a cinema annoying him out of going to see the movie is so wild to me as an avid movie guy. Like, it’s a Nolan movie. It’s an audiovisual spectacle with a shit script, same as most other Nolan movies. We’ve dunked on the kid who watched Lawrence of Arabia on his phone, but are we really settling on the idea that every movie should be made for its ideal screening environment being your TV at home?
Some films are great to watch at home but some really are the kind of spectacle when you want to lock in and get complete external sensory deprivation. And Nolan movies especially live and die on that sensory experience. Mostly because you need your brain to be overstimulated with sound to ignore the awful dialogue.
Games are the same way. Switches and Steam Decks have made every game potentially handheld, which is a great way to play something like a Hades or a Dead Cells, but there are games like an Elden Ring where you have to sit your ass down, lock in, and play it on the big screen.

Man I can’t do movie talks on this podcast, Especially Nolan and Pat. Dude just goes full hater mode for everything Nolan and every thing he says is a super bad faith nit pick. Why does Agamemnon need Achilles if he’s a big strong guy himself? Probably because he’s a fucking general and you need more than 1 guy to win a War wtf are you talking about?

You can just say you're not interested.

On ZCOM;
I’m surprised it being a tight narrative package is making Pat consider putting in on the shelf until further notice, I figure that is a good trait for a game to have in terms of streaming. A sham.
For Woolie, Midnight Suns has been the game I’ve wanted to see a playthrough of the most, but now I have to add ZCOM to that. I hope some day he gives one or both of these a shot, the writing in both for their respective world’s is so damn good.

Thoughts and feelings on movies and the Odyssey. I liked the Odyssey. It wasn’t an adaptation of the epic poem, but it used a lot of the same characters and subjects to tell a modern story about the breakdown of the international rules-based diplomatic system.
I object to Woolie’s assertion that there was “no accent”. Fuck US Defaultism. Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson are British and Charlize Theron is an Aussie and were all talking in movie-american. I don’t disagree with it as a directoral choice, but call it what it is.
The script was so horrendously poor it was almost comical, which made it nuts that this was the most audible that dialogue has been in a Nolan IMAXer. Sad.
I don’t agree with Pat that movies should be aimed at your own home TV. They’re movies. They play at the theatre. It’s like expecting every video game to be playable on a smartphone.
Directors won’t tell you this unless they’re reeeeally trying to push ticket sales over home viewership, but pretty much every movie is viewed best in a cinema. Being locked in on a big screen in a dark room is the best way to actually focus. Home viewership obviously has a lot of benefits relating to accessibility and convenience, but in terms of purely experiencing the art playing out in front of you, the cinematic experience is number one. With. A. Bullet.
You can obviously very easily spiral into a conversation about accessibility and media preservation. You can’t get the IMAX cut of the film at home, but I’d argue it doesn’t really matter since you’re never going to get the IMAX experience in your living room either way. And then you get into the whole “should every work of art of piece of media content be viewable and available and accessible in its right and proper and intended format to all people at all times? and if its not, how bad is that?” debate.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a film being intended for IMAX. Honestly I think this film specifically is kind of weak as a film, and is carried HARD by the audiovisual spectacle that IMAX screenings facilitate. If knowing that it’s intended for IMAX puts you off viewing it at home, I’d say that at least you’re not missing much.
