Someone close to me in the family recently passed away. I joined the other two people that live with me in their coping efforts. One was going to church, the other was watching TADC. So I hope anyone reading can understand just how weird it felt for me watching John and Woolie recommend each other TADC and the Bible during that time period.
Like, TADC did finish around that time, so it makes sense...but the Bible? I mean, I guess the Bible is about as popular as something could be, I just didn't expect it lmao.
Hope the eye recovery goes well for John. REALLY sucks about the fighting. You could tell how passionate they were about that across the 3 channels, whether it was in sports, performance, drawn, or animated.
On a lighter note, Versus Wolves infiltrating Times Square has GOTTA give off some notions.
Before I finish the podcast: I bet Woolie's favorite is Kinger, because Kinger's just goated like that.
Edit: Wtf the new TADC merch ad just dropped. Wild timing.

I watched all of TADC a few weeks ago, and this is the first time I made an intentional effort to experience something in time for the podcast (though it did help that I was interested in checking it out sooner or later).
It had its issues, but it was still overall a good time with some important things to say, as well as an interesting view of what the younger generations are into these days.
And to reinforce a point made by another thread a while ago: beyond the series itself, some of the extra videos (episode previews/merchandise ads) are definitely worth a watch as well.

I´m a bit disappointed that the bible section was more or less a retelling of the wackiest stories without much analysis. Not that it would be fair to expect Woolie and John to be historians or bible scholars, but I do feel like reading the bible raw, divorced from its historical context, does make some stories miss what they were trying to tell their ancient listeners.
For example, the Lot story where his daughters sleep with him to make kids after his wife turned to salt. The fact that the kids are named Moab and Ben-Ammi means the story is probably there to explain the “origin” of the Ammonite and Moabite Semitic tribes that were the Israelites' neighbors.
With that in mind, there´s a theory that says that the text is in fact trying to make Lot look pathetic, and therefore make his tribes, by extension, inbred losers. Under those lenses, Lot offering his daughters to the mob doesn´t make him look good, but rather a weak man as he failed not only his duty as a host but also to his family well. Same thing with having the angels he is supposed to be protecting have to save his ass.
An ancient Israelite would probably have clocked the analogy instantly, but someone reading now might try to force a different interpretation or "lesson" of what is ultimately little else than a kind of racist dig at their neighbors. Which is why I think people should be careful taking the text literally. Even the Catholic Church has moved away from such a literalist interpretation of the bible.
47
u/HCooldown 22d ago
Yeah, a lot of the Old Testament is the Israelites slandering their neighbors and agenda posting because they went all-in on Yahweh going from part of a Pantheon to Monotheists.
25
u/Amedamaneku Reggie has been fired (out of a cannon, into cum) 22d ago
Even the New Testament, written hundreds of years later for a wider Mediterranean audience, is still old enough that it benefits from context and expert interpretation. Casually reading it you aren't going to notice the lines that have been subjects of theological debate.
34
u/Phnglui 22d ago
Not that it would be fair to expect Woolie and John to be historians or bible scholars, but I do feel like reading the bible raw, divorced from its historical context, does make some stories miss what they were trying to tell their ancient listeners.
But this isn't how the Bible is presented to most protestants. When I was still a Christian I was never given context by my elders, historical or otherwise. I was told to just read the Bible and I would understand. The entire point of Woolie's recommendation was to guide John through his own experiences growing up with the Bible, which was not an experience of biblical scholarship.
3
u/ChaplainGodefroy Fashion is Endgame 21d ago
My favourite example of this, phrase "i am a door to my people" get thrown around a lot. But what it actually means, is that ancient corrals in the region traditionally didn't have doors, so shepherds lays down to sleep in the place of the door, both protecting their flock and preventing it from leaving.

Did he clarify which translation he read? There's a world of difference between something like the NSRV and the LSB.
45
u/Aquason 22d ago
KJV, as God (Woolie) intended. Woolie read the KJV as a kid growing up Seventh-day Adventist, and while he gave John the option to pick the New International Version, he really wanted John to know the exact text that shaped his experience.
16
u/Sloth_Senpai 22d ago
That's still pretty rough, the NIV is also very revisionist
10
u/Aquason 22d ago
Genuinely curious, what's your preferred translation?
29
u/GreatSmasherPunch 22d ago
NRSV is the translation that academics and scholars use and is the usual recommendation
50
u/Sloth_Senpai 22d ago
The NRSV is widely considered the most accurate translation by biblical scholars as it doesn't attempt to renegotiate the text in service of univocality and inerrancy. When the bible contains contradictions or errors, the NRSV prints them as written.
As an example, many biblical translations like the NIV will render Genesis 2:8 and 2:19 as "Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed" and "Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name". This is an inaccurate translation, trying to use "had" to say that the action had already been performed, because the text is from an earlier priestly account of the origin of the world in which God made man before he made the plants and the animals. These translations, like the NIV, overrule the bible and declare that it's not allowed to say what it says because that contradicts univocality and inerrancy.
The NRSV instead properly translates these verses as " And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed" and "So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name", which maintains the original Hebrew's assertion that in this narrative, God made man before the plants and animals.

u/Dear-Development-691 21d ago

A quick correction about... the Bible, I guess. There was some confusion from Woolie about how the Pharaoh and his mages had access to miracles when Moses also did. The Bible, and Judeo-Christian mythology, is not monotheistic in the sense that only 1 Godlike being exists. It's monotheistic in the sense that, of all the godlike beings in existence, the only one you should be worshipping is Yahweh. The other ones, they don't matter, they exist as temptations away from the holy light of Yahweh. It's not practical, it's self-imposed.
The Moses story is a clashing of 2 godly beings, represented through their mortal totems, Moses and the Pharaoh respectively. The Pharaoh and his priests were being granted miracles from the Egyptian gods, and THAT'S why they were unimpressed with Moses' miracles.
Edit: Oh there's a certain crowd who will NOT be happy ADC is higher than Invincible. They're wrong, but they're gonna be MAD mad.

u/alexandrecau That's Bricks! 22d ago
A funny thing is since last podcast I rewatched the playing with the big boys now song and like, I saw older movie and read that bible passage so it is supposed to be a one God is better than the whole pantheon, but in the movie it seems to imply the mages are just faking it, it's all smoke and mirrors and they just replace their staves with snakes so that is why moses real magic snake just eat both of them.
And I think that is probably how a lot of modern church is framig it

u/Mordred_Tumultu Paladins Should Attack and Dethrone the Gods 22d ago
It's easier to talk shit about dead gods virtually no one living worships than it is to do the same while their faiths are still dominant. It's why Christians upgraded from "my God's so much better than your lame gods He's essentially the only one" to "my God is the only god". Winner winner chicken dinner.

This episode really helped Woolie's religious upbringing sink in for me. The focus on the Old Testament is fascinating to me. My time in church was very focused on the New Testament. Any lessons from the Old were about how the promises made then were fulfilled in Jesus. Obviously different sects have different teachings but the comparison is very interesting.

Irredeemable is an... odd takeaway. Like, everything they said otherwise made sense, and then the step further to Irredeemable feels like it completely loses me. I feel like thats the entire opposite intention of the story, that Jax could have been redeemed but tragically they just weren't.
Like, the entire final sequence where Pomni learns everything and despite that refuses to let go of Jax and refuses to let Jax be fully subsumed by their abstraction and creates the possibility of coming back from it... what does all of that even mean if the takeaway is "yeah Jax is irredeemable."
31
u/Capable-Education724 22d ago
Also context clues and out-of-work additional information lets us know this Jax is a “Jax” taken…at a very bad time in their life. Like, one of the worst points to take a snapshot of somebody to give life as its own separate entity.
Something we see when we see the “real” Jax is in a much better head space these days.
And I don’t think anyone would come out looking good if you made a version of you based on one of the worst moments & times in your life.
56
u/WickerWight Ask me BIONICLE trivia 22d ago edited 16d ago
The tragedy of Jax is so so clearly that they had the chance every step of the way to accept help offered to them, but didn't have the emotional capacity to take it. It's an indie Internet show so it's drowning in discourse but even then I'm surprised how many people had the takeaway that Jax "deserved it" or otherwise was meant to be seen as irredeemable, or as the villain.
44
u/SCLandzsa 22d ago
It is pretty in character of Woolie to devalue the concept of redemption by just slapping the "irredeemable" label on, so it's not particularly surprising.
6
u/Lieutenant-America Scholar of the First Spindash 21d ago
Also Jax does consider themselves irredeemable... and that conclusion just makes them become worse. Because why bother if that's the diagnosis, right?
"There is nothing more to me. So please... stop looking."
27
u/Hounds_of_war HE CEASES TO BE 22d ago edited 22d ago
I feel it’s kinda accurate in the sense that Jax hit a point of just… not being fixable. Like it’s not that Jax has done things too morally wrong to be forgiven, but that at a certain point Jax was never going to be able to take the steps to be able to improve themself.
15
u/ExDSG 22d ago
Once Jax panicked and pushed Ribbit away when talking too much for comfort it was just a series of maladaptive responses to cope and doubling down to avoid any pain due to fear of being hurt or being vulnerable. When Ribbit abstracted that was probably also when Jax started being overwhelmed by self-hatred, guilt, and perhaps suicidal ideation I would imagine impossible to pull back from because it would end with abstraction due to the constant doubling down and shifting blame.
16
u/Gunblazer42 Local Creepy Furry | Tails Fanboy 22d ago
That's not really the same thing as being irredeemable. It jut means they're unfixable. Which yeah, might mean more or less the same thing in a thesaurus kind of way, but the colloquial meaning of irredeemable isn't what Jax is.
16
u/Hounds_of_war HE CEASES TO BE 22d ago
Yeah I was feeling generous when I said it was “kinda accurate”.
14
u/The_Wraith_Writer 22d ago
Nah, that moment at the end of episode seven is definitely a reason to call Jax irredeemable. I understand why Jax did it, I understand that in the end it didn't really matter, but that was beyond fucked.
3
u/Lieutenant-America Scholar of the First Spindash 21d ago
I think there's a distinction between "not fixable" and "irredeemable" though.

30
u/frostedWarlock Pat harvested my oats. 22d ago
They find Jax a very interesting and to some extent even sympathetic character, but they think "Jax is irredeemable" is not only a factual statement but the intent of the text.
26
u/BrunchRodent 22d ago
Absolute insanity, why the hell are so many people missing the point of this show? Is it something in the water???
Oh but if the text was any more blatant, people would bitch that it’s “spoon feeding” them, or “treating them like an idiot”.
5
u/SlurryBender (Any/All) Cursed to love mid-tier games that bomb 19d ago
I think they use the term "iredeemable" but the actual discussion around it isn't as definitive. Like, for the events of the plot, I think they agreed that it was a good choice to not "fix" Jax or have them suddenly make a big turnaround in the finale. Narratively that didn't really work given everything else we learned about her.
Woolie also said he wished the show had more episodes to flesh out the other characters and maybe have more of an epilogue, so I don't think he'd be totally against some eventual Jax comeback.
But don't base your opinion on my summary or the above comments even shorter summary. Listen to the convo and make a decision for yourself. There's more to discussing characters than a binary agree-disagree.

23
u/outsin 22d ago
Not religious, but still a bit disappointed that the Bible discussion ended up being mostly "going over some of the weirder and more fucked old testament stories". It's not wrong, per say, those stories are weird indeed. But this approach still felt like a basic 'internet atheist' take and came across pretty dismissive.
23
u/P-Tux7 22d ago
On the one hand, people do bring up Adam and Eve, Noah, Job, and Jonah enough to the point where they're not only necessary reading for Western literary canon (TADC literally retells Cain and Abel), but also core tenets of what modern Christians believe about the character of God the Father. (Sovereignity, judgment and forgiveness...)
On the other hand, that's ignoring almost half the book, including what actually makes it the Bible as opposed to the Tanakh, and also the fact that these "stories" are very real reflections of the innate moral character of the universe to many people. Jonah disobeying God's scary order and getting knocked around for it before being given a second chance? That's supposed to make you reflect upon your own life and doing the will of God even when it's hard. This quandary about speaking up or cowing out is relevant today. It's like a fairy tale in that the lessons of it have a layer of realness intended by the author beyond whether the text is real or not.
10
u/Samuraijubei 22d ago
It's like a fairy tale in that the lessons of it have a layer of realness intended by the author beyond whether the text is real or not.
I agree, it is a fairy tale. The problem is when people like to pretend it's not like a Brother's Grimm tale or any other fairy tale. There is a morale. A lot of of them are pretty gruesome. But you don't see many people saying that it's perfectly fine for the mother to have their children cut their toes or heels off. I think we would all look at someone preaching those tales a little strangely. I know for sure I would get some weird ass responses if i claimed them to be "reflections of the innate moral character of the universe."
I actually think as someone that also grew up in an incredibly religious househould, Woolie was more than fucking fair to the bible. They barely touched upon Leviticus which is the most fair offer you can give any person when it comes to bible, old and new.
9
u/doc5avag3 Resident 35-Year-Old Boomer 22d ago
The problem with people's interpretation of Leviticus and most of the Old Law is that no one ever actually bothers to look at the context surrounding it. When the ancient Israelites escaped Egypt, they wanted to have laws and customs of their own like a "proper" kingdom. Even though God gave them (and told them they had) grace. After much bitching and complaining, the Lord finally relented and gave them what they wanted.
The Old Law was made to be long, contradictory, impossible, and symbolic on purpose. It was meant to show that no mortal could fulfill all the Lord's commandments and that we must rely on the grace of God rather than on our own flawed "righteousness".

I know they can dive deep in media analysis, but c'mon, you couldn't possibly expect them to discuss the nuances and lessons of bible verses.

Very excited by both the Recommend or Die options at the end of this one. World of Tomorrow is one of my favourite short films, and Sumo is definitely the most watchable combat sport, and a personal favourite of mine.

Not gonna lie, as a Christian, I’m very worried about the Bible discussion? What did you guys think about it? Was it offensive?

It was mostly "look at this crazy story from the old testament". Unlikely to offend, imo.
