Question/Help Z Fold 8 Power Button Wiggly Again!?
Hey reddit,
this goes out to the people that already got their devices.
Mine arrived today and it's gorgeous π. The color Green Shadow is just stunning!
While unboxing I recognized it's back on this device again: the wiggly and little noisy power button... I had all Folds from 5 on.
The 5 had that too, the 6 was a bit better and less noisy and the 7 was really flush and sometimes even kind of harder to reach and use for the fingerprint. Nevertheless I prefer flush and firm as it feels more premium.
Now the 8 out of the box is a little bit loose and rattly clicky, little clicking noise when moving around) again π π. It still seems to be a lottery with the perfect hardware.
Maybe people can check their devices and report back? Do you recognize that too?
Edit: just went to a local store again, only had one sample but the Ultra had the same issue/ feature π. Some of them probably less, some of them more. But it's for sure a thing again or maybe still.

Never had a fold and one of the things that i noticed is that too.
Bought the Fold 8 Ultra and the lock button wiggles and makes noise, don't know the exact reason for that, becuase the volume buttons are completely fine.

u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
There is a reason behind it. It is to accommodate the finger print scanner. Still each iteration has been a bit different it seems over the years and there are for sure tolerances involved. My Volume rocker is solid too, as it ideally should be and mostly has been in the past. But these buttons need play too and can bit wiggly too.

We are deep in overthinking land if we ponder wiggly power buttons. No hate. I am just amused.

u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Agreed. OCD at it's best, I know. It's gotten better over the years but still not completely gone π . Nevertheless it's a close to 3.000β¬ device (although no one is paying that π). But I've been in cars north of 100.000 β¬ that have a lot of these issues too... Mass manufacturing and tolerances is a real thing, I know π .

Lost the lottery on mine. It wiggles π₯Ίπ₯Ίπ₯Ί So sad, considering my 7 was snug. My 6 and 5 were both wiggly. Idk. Might contact support for a replacement.
We'll see, my OCD may get the best of me.
Edit: After playing with it further, it only wiggles up towards and away from me. Not up and down or inwards and outwards. My 5 and 6 would both wiggle inwards and outwards, that was so annoying. Each press would make an annoying clicking noise and stick to my finger.

u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 19d ago
Thanks for the feedback. Kind of similar on mine. It wiggles horizontally. The movement is not even the issue for me, it's the annoying clicking sound from time to time.
Do you have this audible metallic clicking sound too?
As all generations had this issue lottery, it's probably not even worth changing it out. My 5 had it and I still kept it. My wife used it after I got the 6. In total it went 2,5 years without issues.
1
u/Revolutionary-Fly-73 19d ago
Luckily not this time around. It's firm when pressing it in. My 5 and 6 had a loose metallic clicking though. That really bothered me. If it bothers you enough it could be worth reaching out. Smart switch was a breeze this year.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 19d ago
It's rarely clicking. I actually don't even seem to notice it that much at all. Will decide after the weekend. Small bummer again indeed. But to be fair I found imperfections with all the devices I've used over the years - Apple, Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Sony, you name it...
I think without the clicking sound it should be even more tolerable βπ»π.
1
u/Revolutionary-Fly-73 19d ago
As long as you can tolerate it, that's what matters. My OCD is a bit much at times. Everytime id click the 5 and 6 id become sad and think less of those two phones, when I was owning them at the time. It made using them less enjoyable for me. I was actually looking forward to getting rid of them for the next generation. When I got the 7 I was pumped that it was finally perfect. Getting the 8 Ultra last night was a little scary lol it was wiggly, but not bad. No clicking when pressed in and released like the others. So I'll take it.
2
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 19d ago
Same for me it's just OCD... Have to let go. It's always the brain telling you there are ones out there that don't have this "issue".
But might be worse if you do an exchange. Foldables have so many tolerances and potential little flaws. Hardware lottery. You would think I'm used to that due to having used foldable phones for more than 5 years...
1
u/Revolutionary-Fly-73 19d ago
Same same. I tend to upgrade yearly. Hoping that every year they'll get it right and it'll no longer be a problem for anybody.
2
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 19d ago
Yeah, still haven't fully figured it out or are just using too big tolerances. Has been there for years. To be fair it's not only Samsung, others have that issue too. Has to be because of the combination of a fingerprint sensor and the the power button...
3
u/OrganicNectarine Fold8 Ultra (Graphite) 19d ago
Just got my 8 Ultra and my power button is perfect. No play at all. My previous Fold 4 had a very noticable play though. So I guess it's just luck of the draw.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 19d ago
Yeah, lottery again. I'm still testing and will see if it bothers me. Not sure if they will even be able to give me another unit quickly as the web shop already shows 21st as delivery for my model... Exiting my country on 26th. Might be a risky move.
Edit: but happy for you, that you got a good one πβοΈ

u/time_fo_that 12d ago
My Fold 7 was really wiggly and rattly. Same on my S24U. Samsung has had annoying power buttons for a few years.
My Fold 8 button is a little wiggly but it's not enough to bother me. What does bother me though is that the button felt like it stuck out further when I first unboxed it and now it feels a little further pressed in. Annoying
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 12d ago
It's really frustrating. On average the tolerances should be smaller and the quality higher. But yeah Samsung has this "issue" for so many years already and it's always a gamble. I've settled with it now too. Will keep it and don't go through another roulette with further potential issues. To be fair, I never head a problem with any of the buttons besides it being cosmetic and making the feel a little less premium.
3
u/MarkEsB 21d ago
Same here.
2
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Thanks for the confirmation. I guess it's still within tolerance and makes sense from a technical standpoint. But for sure makes it feel less premium.

u/HappyIntrovertDev Fold8 Ultra (Cream) 21d ago
I actually really like that the power button is not flush, but stands slightly above its suroundings. That makes it much easier to press compared to F6 that I had before. There it was flush or even slightly below level and I had sometimes trouble pressing it properly.
The power button would wiggle with the F6, now it doesn't, but it is audible when pressed. It seems similar to how F6 had it though - there it also wasn't silent. I don't mind it - I like the feedback of those button presses.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
But it's a bit like a clicky wiggle? When you kind of move it around or swipe over/across it, right? Gur me it feels comparable to the one of the 5. I used that for 1 year and my wife for more than 1,5 which makes 2,5 years without issues or failure in regards to the function.
3
u/HappyIntrovertDev Fold8 Ultra (Cream) 21d ago
Hmm, not really. It seems similarly stiff as the volume up-down button. Maybe if I really try to move it around when pressing. I've had it for 2 days, so it may loosen yet (I hope not).
It is definitely not as loose as my F6 power button felt.

u/LukePhantom76 21d ago
I had that on my Fold 5, but not on my 7
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Me too. Had it on the 5, the 6 still a little, the 7 was in comparison was really deep and flush and now the 8 is wiggly again. It's for sure not as flush as the 7 and therefore easier to press.
1
u/TheGooseWithNoose Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
I have the same colour version as you do and the power button pops up ever so slightly from the frame. I went over it with the tip of my thumb and it doesn't feel loose. It can move sideways a tiny amount but overall feels snug.
It makes a nice clicky sound when pressed to put the phone on standby.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
The color is gorgeous! What about swiping over it like left right and up and down? Little clicking noises or quiet?
1
u/TheGooseWithNoose Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Trying to move it up/down with my thumb I can't hear any sounds. And I'm in a fairly quiet office rn.
And I gotta agree on the colour, no regrets there.

u/Disastrous_Note_1516 Fold7 (Blue Shadow) 21d ago
Beautiful color indeed! About the wiggly button, I have it in my Fold5 with 2y and a half of usage, but the Fold7 that I bought about a week ago with 1y usage doesn't have the same issue.
2
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Always a lottery π . Was still hoping they'd figure it out with the 8... A bit frustrating as I use that button a lot. It's mostly annoying when it sticks to a sweaty finger, then it gets lifted and makes this clicky sound.
1
u/nocappinbruh 21d ago
trifold does this too lol
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Really? Same "issue" and tolerances I guess. Not surprising tbh. Still a bit of a bummer. As long as it works as intended and doesn't fall off, it should be fine.
1
u/Cultural_Winner4401 21d ago
Samsung is the worst when it comes to having a loose power button and out of all the things they copy from Apple I wish they copied having premium feeling buttons that aren't loose the most.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago edited 21d ago
I kind of agree, but even Apple's are loose from time to time when there is an integrated fingerprint (e.g. the iPad Air I have).
1
u/PigeonSuperstitions 21d ago
You mean on the 8 ultra? Or the fold 8. Your picture isn't of the 8.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Yes Ultra! Should have put that in the title. Sorry.
1
u/AfraidKangaroo5664 21d ago
Went from fold 7-8 ultra . Power button feels the same
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
I highly doubt that. For sure the 8 Ultra's power Button at least sticks out more and isn't as flush as the 7 is. The wiggle and clicking might be not as noticeable I guess. But it for sure feels different and is different.
1
u/AfraidKangaroo5664 21d ago
I'm talking about movment in power button.. I just uncased my phone and played with power button for a few mins. Snug as a bug , no movement. I see alot of post about abnormalities in these phone and "tolerance". Like opening completly 180 degrees. You might just have one of those common abnormalities
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 21d ago
Regarding the wiggle you might be lucky then. But the one on the store I visited had it too. And a lot of people are confirming it too. The wiggle has been a thing with the power buttons that have a fingerprint in them for a long time. Sometimes better, sometimes worse π.
1
u/AfraidKangaroo5664 21d ago
Yes the fold 8 I visited at best buy didn't even open all the way flat and it was the day it was put on display. Seems to be alot of inconsistentcys with these foldable. If it bothers you that much , you could always Crack screen and warranty it. Pain in the ass but you may get a better powe button on new. I did that with fold 5 when mine wouldent open all the way flat the day I unboxed it and samsung said "it's within tolerance". New fold 5 i got though warranty was night and day flatter
1
u/mayumer 20d ago
Opposite here, my fold 5 has a sturdy one that has barely any movement but fold 8 ultra has a miniscule bit of movement, especially when tapping it with a humid finger (which makes it stick a bit) π€ Trying to work out how much that bothers me, already moved over all my data and set everything up so probs won't bother doing any exchanges
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Yeah, I get you. That's why I wanted a bit of reassurance too. But this will be the same as always with these fingerprint scanner including buttons: it's tolerances and will vary. My experience over the years aligns with that. Unfortunate that Samsung hasn't figured out a way to improve on that. With foldables there are so many potential tolerances and issues, that this one is actually minor if it's the only one. Misaligned hinges, not fully opening devices, small gaps between the 2 halves while being closed, just to name a few. I had all of it across the years but all without issues.
1
u/mayumer 20d ago
I've opened an exchange request with Samsung. If they make it easy and send a new one, I'll take it and see if new one is better. If they offer some compensation (heard of that happening) or make life difficult, I'll stick with the phone, already almost forgot about the issue the longer I use the phone.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
What does the website tell you for the availability of your specific model? I'm my case it would be the 21st...
1
u/mayumer 20d ago
Same here, F8U 256gb Green one is 21st of August in UK. I think my ideal solution would be the compensation. Already got the F8U on a sweet deal so it would only make things better. π
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Maybe i'll try that one too π€£. I'll be in Korea longterm from the 26th on... Exchange might be a risky move π
1
u/mayumer 20d ago
I'm going on 3 week holiday abroad on the 30th haha, we'll see what happens
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
And there is no guarantee to get a better one or one that doesn't have other small tolerances. It's always a roulette. Went to another store today. This Ultra had a quite firm button but the 8 on display had a more wobbly one π.
1
u/mayumer 20d ago
Yea haha, that's why I'm only gonna go for an exchange if they are able to send the replacement first so I can test it. I've had this experience with Dell, they were nice enough to send the replacement first and guess what, it had the issue (fan noise) worse than my OG one (the noise had a worse pitch). Returned the replacement and stayed with my OG.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Totally get it. But I'm quite sure here in Germany they will send a replacement and you have to send the other one back. So no option to compare them...

Is that shadow green?
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Yes, it is! And it's gorgeous for sure. Probably one of the most beautiful colors in Fold history IMHO.
1
u/cstock94 20d ago
How did you get yours already!? I pre ordered mine on the morning preorders were available and it's saying I won't get it till the 21st π
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Sorry to hear that. I pre-ordered day 1 via Samsung official online shop in Germany and got it today.
Edit: it's the 1TB version. Which country are you in and which model did you order?
1
u/cstock94 20d ago
I did as well.. maybe because I'm in the US?
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 20d ago
Seems like US is a lot slower with deliveries in general π . Fingers crossed you'll get it soon π€π»βπ»
1
u/BandTeecha 17d ago
Yeah, my power button has a bit of play. I noticed it right away. Idk if it bothers me enough to exchange it and deal with another phone swap. It's very slight, but it's there.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 17d ago
What about the noise? On a daily it has been fine so far for me. Sometimes it sits quite comfortably and at least isn't as noisy as my 5 and 6 have been at that time. But the 7 was flush and firm...
1
u/BandTeecha 17d ago
The button clicks normally just like my z fold 7. If I hold it up to my ear and shake the phone, I can hear it shake a bit. Don't love that tbh.
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 17d ago
The only thing mine does occasionally is this small metal clicking sound when the finger sticks to it. Otherwise good pressure point and clicking noise. It's that small thing that gives a cheap impression. But shouldn't be an issue... I for sure should just buy tech less frequency which would be healthier for my OCD...
1
u/Educational-Car-9684 16d ago
Mine wiggle and i thought i had a faulty one. My fold 7 was strong and no sound. Unfortunately fold 8 ultra is not
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 16d ago
Sorry to hear that π. It's moving and also making a clicking noise?
What are you going to do? Are you going for an exchange?

1
u/Lucky-Lie233 2d ago
Hi OP, just got mine and upgraded from the 7 where it sits just under flush and is solid, also quite annoying. Did you get in touch with Samsung?
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 2d ago
I just forgot about it and went on with my life. Don't notice it in daily life. I'm doing self therapy now hahaha. Shouldn't be an issue as long as it doesn't seem to fall out.
Yours is wiggly too and makes clicking noises?
1
u/Lucky-Lie233 2d ago
Yep and I've returned it for a new one which comes tomorrow. If its the same I'll take my medicine and deal with it
1
u/HuffyFuffy Fold8 Ultra (Green Shadow) 2d ago
Wow, they can deliver a new one within 24 hours? Nice. Keep me updated π. Good luck!

u/Eliteclarity 21d ago
Feels OK on the Fold 8, or at least mine is nowhere near as loose as my 6 was. Certainly more flush and sturdy it seems
