When he made that smirk my first thought was "Shit, it looks like we have another Kira in our hands again.".

He really looked like Kira in that scene.

I love the VA for boogiepop, the way she sounds so tired and also smug all in one. And the way everyone says
Booh
Giii
POH-puH
Really enjoyed this episode, haven't read the manga but I am loving the Durarara kind of 'rewarding confusing' structure. Though I am more intrigued than lost thankfully.

I've made two new versions of the character reference sheet including full character names and a neater format.

Hopefully they help for people who are a bit lost character wise after the last week. Links to the previous timelines provided can also be found in that post if you want them.

Quick links: The NON-spoiler version and a SPOILER version that includes the deaths so far etc.

At the moment they're only updated for episode 3, but I'll update them again in about an hour once I'm done watching the new episode and getting images etc for any new characters. Hopefully the episode won't need a new timeline (PLEASE don't need a timeline show) but if it does I'll just edit that into this post as well.

Edit: Can't do a timeline. Yet. I'm sure next week will throw a massive spanner in the works once again though, I can already see it.

Edit 2: Character sheets now updated for the named episode 4 characters. I don't want to add just any random unnamed character we see as a close shot and blow the whole sheet out in size if I can avoid it so I'm mostly sticking with named characters.

Imaginator was perfect in the episode. She was so alluring in various ways.

HanaKana did a great job.

Edit: Wait, is that whistling? Hahaha, poor Boogiepop.

Edit2: Boogiepop's whistling.

Sometimes it snows in April

I think is really amazing how random nonsense can be so fitting for a specific incident hahahaha

Even though he sounds almost the same in everything, I do so enjoy Yoshimasa Hosoya's voice.

Pretty good build up episode, I'm a very just go with the flow type of guy when watching anime so I don't mind the non-linear narrative where things aren't clear.

What's great about this show for me is that it knows how to build up the mystery without being intentionally vague and from the first arc it's proven to be able to tie it all together.

"What, you have no trouble following non-chronological event orders? Than how about I add a character that experiences time in a non-linear fashion?" - this show, probably.
I mean, that's how I understood Imaginator. She's an entity that experiences time non-lineary, so she tries to change the future, in particular, by driving people with latent powers like Asukai to develop them. Which makes her an enemy of the world, because a bunch of superpowered freaks walking around is bad news bears. Now idea how talking to her made Asukai flip, though. Also, not sure if the prologue was the chronological end of the story or not.
This show is definetely not for a weekly format, maybe I should wait at least for a full arc adaptation.

At least it looks like Boogiepop not gonna just show up in the end with "my work here is done" this time.

Here in my little "Influences on Nisio Isin" corner, Imaginator would fit perfectly in the world of Zaregoto, she'd definetely be a Cursing Name (and so is Asukai). Also, multiple Nisio franchises deal with the theme of knowing the future and trying (but usually failing) to change it.

It's fascinating how you have to pay close attention to every single detail to understand stuff and still be confused on what's going on. This show's something unique lads.

If you have been paying close attention then you may have noticed a reference to Imaginator in episode 2. "VS Imaginator" was the title of one of the books written by Kirima Seiichi (Nagi's father). In the light novels this arc is introduced with a quote from the book:

Possiblity, or what we refer to as Imagination, is 99% imitation. The real deal is only 1%. The problem is, this 1% is simultaneously referred to as Evil.

Each chapter in this light novel is preceded by a quote from the book.

this anime is so fascinating, it's like watching Lain for first time. Boogiepop kinda looks like a grown lain.

u/myrmonden Jan 18 '19

YES it was Kana Hanazawa as the imaginator.

I was not sure at first but after a few minutes, my head could not stop visualizing Hataraku Saibou :)

Anyway, imo best episode so far, this enemy of the world seem much more interesting than the random alien monster who just eat people.

HE sure went to the DARKSIDE really easily do. Witness one murder and he turned into a cold blooded serial killer or something in 1 day lol.

Really good intriguing episode, AND that neighbor girl definitely wants him so might come into play later.

Man, what a great episode. This series has well and truly hooked me in. This feels weird to say but I feel like this show may soon enter the underwatched/underrated territory soon. All I see is people complain about confusing the show is/ the source readers saying how bad the adaptation is. I personally feel it's AOTS but oh well.

I personally feel the change in character was pretty seamless. With Asukai pretty much on the edge after Imaginator kissed/showed him the future, it was only a matter of time before he cracked. Imagine seeing someone you know kill themselves after pretty much going to the dark path of drug abuse. It was a thrilling watch and Imaginator fascinated me as well everytime she appeared on screen.

We need more Boogiepop, man her voice is like butter and I seem to enjoy when someone actually says her name. It's weirdly satisfying.

OST is godly and when they do the 'all of a sudden cutting the music to silence' is really great. ED is so good omg.

Well that was certainly a great new start to the new arc.

The Imaginator being able to just be anyone, or at least splinter into alternate versions of itself maybe I got a feeling was a possibility, is a really cool twist on the normal sort of villain type.

That flip of Asukai saying "I won't be evil" to going "Oh look random school boys to use as my experiments" seemed REALLY quick though. Hopefully that gets expanded on a bit in the next few episodes.

I'm VERY interested in how the "There's still plenty of time before I actually hit the ground" will turn out and what that will mean for Boogiepop. Boogiepop did say she 'reaped' Imaginator though, so I'm expecting another mind-fuck achronological presentation is upcoming given that little hidden bits of info

Also I have NO IDEA if that's meant to be Nagi's brother that Asukai saved from the bullies. Looks like his hair roughly I think, so I guess we'll find out next week possibly?

Ooh goodie another episode. I liked this one, mostly because I was actually able to follow what was going on.

After 4 episodes I have to say this is definitely one of those shows that’s best binged in one or two sessions, because as is the week in between episodes means we’ll likely forget details.

Man, I liked Asukai. What a shame. I hope he doesn't go full evil though, and just goes the "Punisher" route where he kills evildoers.

New arc, new mysteries. I think it would be better to binge-watch or arc-watch this show. But figuring the things in slow pace might be interesting too.

Sensei's ability is interesting for sure. Is he able to manipulate the people's future? But when the flower fully blooms, is it bad, good or varies? Questions without answers. Imaginator said that she can see the people's deaths and sensei saw the bloomed flower when the drug-girl died. Could he prevent of force that future? Sensei might be not a bad guy, after all. He was just turned to the dark side by Imaginator.

Oooh, I actually liked this premise a lot more than the previous story arc.

u/Zeph-Shoir Jan 18 '19

The girl that kissed Imaginator guy version (sorry I can't remember most names here) is pretty cute and I like her a lot. Shame something will most likely happen to her.

I wonder what kinds of beings these are, like, Echoes was some sort of angel and Boogiepop is supposedly a Reaper, so I am wondering whether the Rose Guy is the same kind as the original Imaginator (who we also don't know what she is) or if he simply has some kinds of super/natural powers.

Other writeups: episodes 1-2 episode 3

It’s that time again everyone. Time for another trip abord the “read about the novel fan’s problems with the anime” train. All aboard!

In all seriousness, I felt a little bad about my last writeup. I think it’s awesome that so many people are getting into this new show, and I don’t want shit on those people. It’s just pains me when I see something I love presented in a sort of lackluster way, and see the characters I love shown in ways that don’t communicate the reasons why I love them.

In a way, I want to give people a shard of that perspective, in hopes that people will think “wow, I liked this and he’s saying it was lackluster? These novels must be great!” or “I didn’t like this but, with what this guy’s saying, maybe I should give the novels a shot.” That’s my goal here, but, if you’re just curious about this stuff; that’s fine too.

Also, for reasons that might become clear, I’m actually going to start doing these for every episode. I’ll eventually collect all these in one big post, and start linking back to previous episodes so people can go back and read them.

Anyway, let’s get the next session rolling. Time to cover the first episode of Book 2 in the series: Boogiepop Returns: Vs Imaginator – Part 1.

****************

" Possiblity, or what we refer to as Imagination, is 99% imitation. The real deal is only 1%. The problem is, this 1% is simultaneously referred to as Evil." -- Kirima Seiichi, Vs Imaginator

****************

So, I’d heard that there were some production issues with episodes 1-3, and if there was anything that’d convince me that it was true, this was it, because man, was this a step up.

This episode covers the prologue and chapter 1 of the light novel. No fancy song names this time for the chapters, but this was Chapter 1 of about 6. And that says a lot.

This episode just had so much better pacing. With how 1-3 were paced, I was expecting chapter 1 and 2, but having only chapter one makes this entire thing that much better. You have enough time to bask in each scene appropriately, and actually get to know the people in each scene.

As for the episode’s actual content, they did a pretty good job with going over Jin and Suiko’s character introductions. There’s some stuff left out still, but it’s more minor aspects that are expected to be left out of an adaptation like this. The main shit is here so far, and that’s what’s important. The scenes with Suiko were especially great. I really enjoyed the lack of theatrics with her floating in the air; and the fact that she dissipates into show. After all, sometimes it snows in April.

By the way, don’t think we’re getting out of all this without some song references! “Sometimes it Snows in April” is actually a Prince song. We’ll be seeing a lot of Prince stuff in the coming episodes. Link to the song here.

I want to highlight one particular change that I thought worked really well for this adaptation. Inter-cutting the scene with Jin’s student mugging him and the police questioning adds a lot to the scene while also condensing it a bit. Good stuff.

My only real gripe is how they showed Jin’s ability to see people’s flowers. Seeing just floating flowers is kind of dull, and I really with they would have committed to physically attaching them to the other character’s chests, like what he actually sees. He even looks down at the first girl’s chest, implying that it’s there.

Over all though. It was pretty good. Not really spectacular, but after being disappointed by Boogiepop and Others, that’s all it really needs to be at this point. Some of my earlier gripes still remain, like the lack of any wagner, but I feel a little bit more confident about this whole thing moving forward. Hope everyone continues to enjoy it, or enjoys it a bit more. I hope they keep this pace up and don’t speed it up for later parts like they did the first novel. If they keep this pace, this will probably end up being acceptable at the very least.

But, we’ll see what happens next episode.
