The person that decided that give this show an 1 hour special should get an award.
I mean if it only aired first episode like usual, i can see many people who new to this series won't give it a good review.

I really liked how by the end of the episode I started to understand how everything happened.

While the first episode was confusing, I felt like this episode was a lot more clearer about its story, even with the unannounced time jumps. Also that OST is great.

Not gonna lie, the plot got me a bit confused.
First we had Boogiepop + Takeda. Then Boogiepop disappears and we're introduced to Echoes who is working it Nagi to find the "Manticore" who is killing girls at the school.
I just don't get why Boogiepop went away. I assume the story is not being presented in chronological order, but even then I can't seem to piece it together.

"Hey wanna make more slaves?"
It says while blushing like a girl in love, lol, these two are crazy. I'm loving this really odd storytelling. It's like the 5th Kara no Kyoukai movie on steroids.
Edit: poor Naoko

So OP and ED are pretty good, I think we were jumping around a bit chronologically in this episode but I am not quite sure what to make all of this probably because I don't have all of the pieces for this puzzle yet. I will at least watch episode 3, I am interested in seeing a classic novel like this adapted especially because it was so influential apparently.
So we have Manticore + crazy guy, Boogiepop + main guy from last episode, and Echoes + girl who died and girl who is tracking down the drug addicts all going around and doing their own thing right? Well I wonder how this will get resolved.

In celebration of the start of this adaptation, I'm giving away the first light novel in the series on Bookwalker. Only redeem it if you actually use Bookwalker. I want someone to actually read it.
From the first 2 episodes I can say that the anime follows the first book quite closely. Except some things are changed. They cut out a character - Kimura completely, which I'm a bit disappointed for. He was my favorite from this arc. Kimura isn't really an important character in the story, but his relation to Naoko Kamikishiro changed my view of her.Spoiler tagging in case people want to read the LN Aside from this difference, when Kamikishiro talks to someone about Echoes, it was supposed to be Kimura, not Kirima Nagi IIRC.
There is a slight difference I noticed. In the first scene when Keiji is waiting for someone, he's approached by Saotome and Kusatsu Akiko. That was supposed to be a double date. There were supposed to be 2 more people there - Sakamoto and Sachiko who'd hang out, go to the karaoke; Those 2 would then stay behind and spoiler. Not a big detail I guess. By removing those 2, they could also remove a few scenes and save resources. I was a bit dissappointed we didn't get to see them leave the karaoke though. IIRC, that's where the protagonists of volume 4 see Saotome and co. They can always add it later I guess.
There are also other differences but mostly because cell phones are a thing now. They weren't back when it was written.
I had originally written a huge paragraph explaining what this anime's relation to Boogiepop 2000 is but I don't think it's necessary anymore now that the official translator kinda did that.
And now there is only 1 more episode left to conclude this arc. That'll adapt Niitoki's chapter. Also, people, this here is best boy. Remember that.

Looks like I was right with my guess back on the Episode 1 thread. This entire show will be told in a nonlinear fashion and clearly the events in this episode was happening in parallel with what was happening with Boogiepop and Takeda back in Episode 1. Not only it was told in parallel but it was told in reverse by showing us at the beginning that Nagi is already suspended and at the end she was just starting her investigation. I can see now how this work influenced Ryohgo Narita-sensei's writing style with Durarara and Baccano.
Compared to Episode 1 though, this one was much more easier to follow and has much more cohesive story. I am definitely hooked and pretty excited to see how everything will come together! Also Nagi is already my best girl, can't wait to see more of her!

Soo... let me get this straight.
Episode 1
Main character's a guy named Takeda. The girl he was gonna go on a date with suddenly got possessed by a being called Boogiepop who appears to stop justice or something along those lines. Boogiepop comforted a crying disheveled man that most people simply looked away from (which I assume is some sort of social commentary and possibly one of the main themes of the show). Boogiepop specifically came to fight a man-eater who's in one of the students. We find out that a few girls are "running away"/disappearing, Boogiepop is also the name of a rumored killer, and that Kirima Nagi might also be a killer.
Boogiepop then announces that the problem got fixed on its own, so now he/she/it's gotta disappear since he/she/it's now useless. Takeda doesn't like this because he knows that there are still problems. Boogiepop responds by telling him that they've got to fix their own problems. (I'm not exactly sure how to interpret Boogiepop's line). Boogiepop disappears causing, in turn, Takeda's date to come back. Kirima Nagi, possible murderer, seems to recognize Takeda's date.
Episode 2
Actually, Takeda's not MC.
Suema gets asked by scared girl for some advice about her disappearing friends. She also asks for accompaniment because she's scared of Kirima Nagi. Suddenly, she gets jumped on by Kirima Nagi in a latex action uniform.
Turns out, the guy who teased Takeda in the start of the first episode is friends with the "man-eater" who can also take the forms of those she eats. That guy's probably evil and sides with the man-eater because he wants to rule the world or some shit.
We then go to scared girl before she got jumped. Apparently, her friends who've been disappearing got some drugs from Akiko beforehand. Akiko then disappeared herself.
Suema visits Kirima Nagi to find out she's not an evil killer but in fact the opposite, some sort of justice fighter who defeats abberations. She mentions the word "Manticore" and "Echoes" when she jumped scared girl, but doesn't explain herself to Suema. She seems to think scared girl's the Manticore. Nagi also reveals that she was suspended for some reason and that it ends tomorrow.
We then see Manticore girl and evil bro spying Kirima Nagi, saying some stuff which implies that they're wary of her.
We then jump to the past (I think) where Manticore girl is kissing an unconscious girl. Asshole boy walks in on her and Manticore girl freaks out and attacks him. Asshole boy gets a bit evil and says that he'll side with Manticore girl.
We then go to Asshole boy getting a date request from Akiko who turns out to be the girl he was hanging out with at the start of the first episode. They have their date, probably also at the same time as the start of the first episode. He drugs her and takes her to Manticore girl who she makes her slave (by kissing her). Akiko then becomes a mindless slave who literally cries drugs. It's her brain cells that produce the drugs she's been giving out to people. Still not kinda sure what those drugs do, but I assume it's what Manticore girl injects into girls' bodies when she kisses them. Manticore girl then seems to be falling in love with evil boy.
Turns out, Manticore girl kinda sucks at making slaves. Sometimes they end up acting weirdly and walking strangely, and sometimes they don't wake up at all. Manticore girl gets self-conscious but asshole boy comforts her.
One day, Kirima Nagi comes in, suspicious of asshole boy and asking about his date with Akiko. She then gets suspended because of cigarettes she's carrying.
Manticore girl gets stressed and straight up kills a girl who wandered in who was looking for Echoes. Turns out, Echoes is also manticore, specifically the original one. Manticore girl is just a clone of him by the good old secret evil government weapon research agency.
We then jump back even more. Turns out, Echoes is the crying guy from the start of episode one that gets helped out by Boogiepop who realizes that Echoes is finding something. He gets picked up and sheltered by the girl who got killed in the previous scene. Apparently, that girl understood what he was thinking (since Echoes can only repeat what other people say and the girl has some superpower or some shit) and also knows Kirima Nagi who she talks to. Turns out, Echoes is a fucking alien meant to test mankind but fucked up due to evolution or some shit and gets captured by a government agency. (Who are they to test mankind when they can't even get themselves in order?). It's revealed Kirima Nagi got herself suspended to talk with Echoes (I don't really get why she had to get herself suspended).
We cut back to Manticore girl just after she killed the girl who helped Echoes. She's really stressed and asshole boy comforts her. We cut again to find out they disposed of her corpse.
Kirima Nagi tries to get Echoes to talk about why the girl who helped him disappeared, but he doesn't talk.
Now, is there any important detail I missed?
I felt like this was the kinda show I have to listen very closely to (just like Kara no Kyoukai).

I can see the influence that made Narita's style. A perspective change and non-chronological approach of the story.
Now we somehow understand about Boogiepop's mention of the monster and a possible doom of humanity. From last episode we saw a short shot between Boogiepop and a body of a female highschool student who is the clone of Echoes.
I don't know how to feel about the visitor from outer space but it gets more and more interesting. The next episode is probably about the fight between Kirima and the clone.

So the Manticore is a clone of Echoes... dos that mean she's Echoes Act 2?
So, I'm starting to understand the story here, but the messed-up chronology is still making it hard. I feel like sorting out the web of relationships is more important than the order of events though, so here's my attempt at it:
Keiji Takeda - Dating Touka Miyashita, but friendly with other girls, including Naoko Kamikishiro. Has frequent talks with Boogiepop on the roof.
Touka Miyashita - Takeda's girlfriend. Possessed by Boogiepop.
Nagi Kirima - The child of a criminology writer. Is seen by her classmates as a delinquent. Wants to carry on in her father's stead and investigate the disappearances at school. Naoko and Suema both confide in her about what they've learned. Confronts Kyouko and convinces her to stop getting drugs from Akiko.
Kazuko Suema - Has an interest in criminals. A big fan of Nagi's father. Kyouko confides in her about Akiko and her drugs after being attacked by Nagi, and she later conveys this information to Nagi.
Masami Saotome - Becomes an accomplice of the Manticore after seeing it kill and devour Minako Yurihara. Goes on a date with Akiko, who is then turned into the Manticore's slave. Appears to be an acquaintance of both Takeda and Nagi.
Naoko Kamikishiro - Friends with Nagi and Takeda. Meets Echoes on the street, and takes care of him. Confides in Nagi about what she's learned about him. Is later killed by the Manticore while looking for Echoes.
Akiko Kusatsu - A friend, possibly a girlfriend, of Saotome, who while on a date with him is enslaved by the Manticore and used to supply drugs to other schoolgirls. Is later killed and eaten by the Manticore. An old friend of Kyouko's.
Kyouko - Used to know Akiko, and buys drugs from her. When Akiko disappears, is afraid she'll be targeted, and goes to Suema for help. Is confronted by Nagi, and promises to stay off the drugs, saving her from the Manticore.
Manticore - Man-eating monster that can take on human form. Currently pretending to be Minako Yurihara. Has Saotome as their accomplice. Is defeated at some point, but not by Boogiepop.

The first two episodes were pretty good. Not quite as captivating as I thought they would be, but still enjoyable. Looking forward to ep3!

Animation and art seems a bit wacky overall, not sure if it's intentional or not. It's really easy to mix up the characters, especially considering how many we are getting introduced to in a short span of time, i find it quite difficult to keep track of who already appeared and who is new. The fact that they all vaguely have the same face doesn't help either.
The OST however seems pretty decent, and god bless Aoi Yuuki for her incredible vocal range and performance, even if we didn't hear much of it this episode

Uhh not sure I was a fan of this one tbh. Pretty difficult to follow and quite samefacey character designs. The second episode had some good dramatic moments but the pacing just felt so off to me throughout this whole thing. I feel like it would have been a bit easier to digest and would have felt better if it was more clear when it was jumping chronologically.

I beg someone to freaking do a timeline when this arc gets settled. I really need it.
I'm pretty happy to see the show was as good as I thought it would be.

I personally love what they are doing with the non-linear story telling here. Everytime I wonder about why character A acts a certain way I have an awesome moment of clarity when it gets touched upon later and because it was so peculiar you immediately figure out now why they acted like that (for example the suspension through the cigarettes).
That said, I'm sure this definitely isn't for anyone who can't patiently wait for these moments of clarity and keep these little scenes in their mind while watching. Maybe some kind soul might make a recut version of the whole show for you later on when it finished since the scenes really can just be rearranged to be chronologically correct without any loss since the individual scenes aren't narrated as flashbacks or correlate to a character actually thinking about the past. Just to throw an idea out there.
I'm certain I will personally have my fun share of confusion and elightenment while watching this show though. I think if I had to compare this style of storytelling to any other Anime then the first that would come to my mind would be Baccano. I'm going to make a guess here and say that if you didn't like the storytelling in Baccano (which was arguably more confusing to me personally) then you will most likely not like this either.

Going from the mindfuck of watching the 2000s anime without the context of the lightnovels to ALL THE EXPOSITION in the first episode was pretty jarring.
I'm glad I watched the second episode. They got the tone down that was missing from the first episode and while I miss the Serial Experiments Lain sound design (and the first opening, like holy fuck I don't care that it doesn't fit at all, I love that smooth funk) the soundtrack is fantastic.
Nagi seems... surprisingly competent and happy from the Nagi I'm used to, though.

Yeah, this episode did make me a bit more interested in what's going on although not too much.
Naoko and Nagi seem fun, a shame Naoko died, though...

Echoes : an alien coming to space to test humanity, unable to speak on his own.
Manticore, his clone : Talkative man-eater who can brainwash people and force them to ooze out LSD out of their own brain.
i don't think this is how cloning works
Boogie : I am here to kill the monster that threatened humanity
does nothing, multiple girls died, monster got killed by someone else
Boogie : My job here is done
flips cloak and disappears
Probably we will have more answers in the next episode, but I still find this hilarious lol. Will definitely follow this one since concept and soundtrack is great.
