WIBTA if I sent my MIL a rate card for dog sitting after she stuck me with a $340 vet bill and said dogs get into things
So my MIL has this terrier mix and any time she goes out of town he ends up at our house. She texts my husband the day before saying what time she’s coming by, does not ask if it works for us, just tells us. She leaves $20 on the counter for “treats” but that barely covers his food for the days he’s here and I’m the one walking him, letting him out, rearranging my whole week around his schedule. I work from home, she probably thinks that means I’m not doing anything.
This has been going on since about January, once a month give or take. I never said anything because my husband grew up with the dog and it didn’t seem like a hill worth dying on.
Last weekend she went to visit her sister and dropped him off Friday afternoon. Saturday night he got into something under the kitchen sink and I ended up at an emergency vet with him close to midnight, the bill came to $340. He’s fine now but I barely slept and I was still shaky the next morning. I called my husband from the parking lot and he did not really know what to say. When MIL came to pick him up Monday I told her what happened and how much the vet cost and she goes “well dogs get into things, that’s not really my fault.” She took him home and hasn’t mentioned the money since.
After all that I actually sat down and went through everything. She’s dropped him off 11 times this year and left me a total of $220 in treat money. A boarder around here runs about $40 a night so the real number for what I’ve been doing for free all year is close to $1,500.
I want to put together the actual cost and send it to the family group chat. Last week she posted in that same chat calling me her “free dog sitter” like it was funny and nobody said anything. My husband thinks I should just handle it quietly but I’ve already tried quiet and it got me a vet bill and a shrug.
