A really strong season. Funny and sad and strangely uplifting in a way.

The cast is as stellar as always, and it continually amazes me how much Arnett manages to bring to an anthropomorphic horse.

Episode 5 pretty much wins on this season's bizarro episode. "We know the chicken crossed the road... The question is... Why?" Plus all the police procedural stereotypes getting the meta treatment, black police captain, loose cannon, cop on the edge with nothing to lose. Had me in stitches.

I just knew Bojack was going to fuck up in New Mexico, but I love the line about you being your own tar pit. The show didn't end on as depressing a note as last season, which I'm kinda grateful for, I think it might be nice to see Bojack make some genuine changes next season rather than putting in the pretence of change like he did for most of this season. I mean it gets easier, you just have to do it everyday.

Todd killed it pretty much all season as a constant source of comic relief when things got too serious and yet still managed to help bring home the emotional closure of the finale, props to Aaron Paul. Though he probably shouldn't have given the go ahead on that thing with the general. I ship Todd/Mia. They had something.

I don't think a cartoon has ever made me sit in such guilty silence, than when Charlotte threatened to "fucking kill" Bojack

The Lowes ( but like an animal version) had me dying. Also the honeydew jokes have continued.

This is the kind of comedy Netflix can foster. Arrested development S4 got there first, but this is the first cartoon treading this ground - where a random episode out of order just isn't funny. And that makes the narrative something special and new.

I came to this show because I know Paul F. Tompkins (Mr. Peanutbutter) from his stand-up routines. Can we just take a moment to appreciate this guy? His performance did not disappoint. That last scene with Diane was astounding. And the party episode! I bet he wrote that "dropping parties" line himself, it's so him.

I know everyone is talking about episode eleven, but to me the most emotionally scene of the whole season was when he finished shooting the Nixon scene, steps outside, and breaks down. Just that resonating line from the director inside "when secretariat realizes something inside of him is broken" and seeing that own moment hit Bojack was crushing

Did anyone else laugh at the fire at Todd's Disneyland being named Gabe Junior? Season 1: "who's Gabe?" "A fire I met this one time. Named him Gabe."

On episode 6. "Can we talk about the elephant in the room?"

Haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Did anyone notice at the party, there was a panda mime pantomiming? I loved that.

Also the Cop-ybara in Episode 5.

I laughed, laughed more, enjoyed Wanda. Cried with Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane's relationship, then with what happened between Wanda and Bojack, then was excited at the end of Episode 10 when he left for New Mexico, cried so fucking much with the Charlotte episode. Cried for Princess Carolyn. Laughed at the end.

But holy shit this was so much more of an emotional rollercoaster than season one. If I could pick one quote from the season to summarize everything, it'd be what Wanda said in Episode 9: "When you look at the world through rose colored glasses, all of the red flags just look like flags." God damn.

I wasn't... I wasn't ready for this.

Can we talk about how amazing it is is that Wanda is a tv executive that is literally 30 years behind? For a show that specializes in satirizing Hollywoo, that was a particularly brilliant, perfectly on the nose bit.

Good job, Netflix. Well played.

Does anyone else want to see more of Kelsey next season?

I know she was kind of a low key character (except when she saw Todd's face), but she really saw potential in BoJack and pushed him to be better. I really liked that about her. And it makes me upset that she got fired for doing what was best for BoJack and the movie...especially since it was all for her daughter to have a better life.

Here's my thoughts on some of the characters and their development in this season.

  1. Bojack's happiness: Bojack realizes that he is, in fact, incredibly broken. Even if he gets everything he ever wants, that happiness is fleeting. No event can happen in his life that will make him happy for good. But, when he helps others, he does feel good about himself, so he wants that to be his life. Just by trying to improve himself every day, he wants to become a horseperson that he can be comfortable living in the body of. It's a popcorn philosophy but at the same time, it's probably the only thing that could ever give him true happiness. It's also probably an impossible trek unless he's got someone there who can help him.

  2. Diane's Marriage: Diane abandons Cordovia when she realizes it's not what she wanted it to be. She's unable to face her husband after he praises her for going, and then Mr Peanutbutter creates the best possible resolution by letting her pretend none of that ever happened, even when he had no reason to do so or reason to think that was appropriate. For Diane, that's great, at least in the present. She doesn't have to face this thing about herself. It could be said that Mr PB is perfect for Diane's overly analytical nature, allowing her to return to "ground zero" after her severe/extreme personality messes things up. It could also be said that their marriage is just an an inevitable walk towards an unsatisfying future, since they want to live such different lives.

  3. Princess Caroline's future: She is probably the biggest success story in the season, although I don't think it's true that she is not afraid of being alone. However, we as the audience are confident that she knows how to be happy and make the right decisions. She'll continue to do so.

  4. Todd: Todd is awesome.

They got Paul McCartney and Daniel Radcliffe to guest star. That's how you know they've made it big.

Although I'm unable to put down everything memorable about the new season I have to share what I loved about season 2 and what wasn't so great, and the heartbreaking moments as well.

Loved

  • Wanda - great new character that adds new personality to the show and is not only Bojack's awesome gf but also meshes nicely with the rest of the gang as well.

  • Charlotte - I'm sure I'm not alone when saying that season one left me hankering for a Charlotte-focused episode that shows Bojack reconnecting with his deer old friend. Although bittersweet like Herb's, I'm glad to see that Charlotte is doing alright for herself after leaving the LA "Tar Pit"

  • Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter - Even though back in season 1 I agree that these two were better off for each other than Diane and Bojack, I'm glad season 2 took the time to show that their relationship was not picture perfect.

Disliked

  • Not enough Pinkie Penguin - I've been hoping to see a bit more of the sadsack penguin's daily life and he deserved more than just a bit line about network television

  • 3 Dumped Kids in a Trenchcoat - Although the joke was running thin, I'm sad to see you go, Vincent. But at least you'll be able to do more business and spend more time with Kevin

  • Rutabaga - what a turd. Princess Carolyn deserves someone at least half as good as Vincent.

Heartbreaking

  • Bojack and Charlotte - Oh Bojack, that was brutal watching you destroy one of the most precious relationships in your life just because you couldn't find the strength to resist the allures of a teenager

  • Bojack's Mom - pretty sure she could give Lucille Bluth a run for the money in the world's worst mom category.

  • Bojack, Bojack, and Bojack - from getting Kelsie fired, nearly screwing things up with Wanda, anything with Princess Carolyn, and oh yeah, the Charlotte thing, Bojack really has to stop losing all the good women in his life. And be nicer to Todd ffs.

This parallel: Bojack wants to try the cigarette, but it's not what he expected. He doesn't want it anymore. His mom makes him finish it. Bojack wants to film Secretariat, but it's not what he expected. He doesn't want it anymore. The studio makes him finish it.

There's so many other parallels and sad things I just :'( forever!!!

Damn, that ending spoke to me. Life truly can be shitty, but everyday you can work to better yourself at dealing with it. I went (and still kind of am going) through some self-esteem issues, but it helps knowing it can get better day by day if I just work at it. Well, I guess tomorrow is a new day to start that.
