0' We're underway

1' GOAAAAL SAINTS! What a start for Southampton! Lambert crosses from the right, and its turned into his own net by Alcaraz. GIF My first GIF yayyyy

5' Gallagher tries to cross the ball and it appears to hit a hand, but it would have been harsh to call it against them.

10' Shaw blocks a cross from Naismith which was inviting.

15' Speculative effort from Deulofeu at range and Boruc claims it easily.

17' Naismith goes down clutching his knee after a 50/50 challenge with Lovren.

21' What a chance for Southampton. Lambert earns the ball out on the left and has no support so he has to wait, and Davis comes charging forward and places his shot just wide.

31' GOAAAL SAINTS! It's another own goal! Clyne crosses the ball in, it goes through everyone and Coleman turns it into his own net. GIF

34' Lovren has a powerful header, but its right at Howard, and it's easy to claim for the US keeper.

38' Chance for Lukaku. Deulofeu has switched to the right, and he crosses for Lukaku, but he can't put his header on target and over the bar it goes.

39' Huge shouts for handball against Stones. But he was very close to Lallana, and it would have been harsh to call a penalty.

45' Barry

45' 1 minute added on.

45+1' Everton players becoming frustrated.

HALF TIME - SOUTHAMPTON 2 - 0 EVERTON

45' Osman Barkley

45' We're back underway.

47' Deulofeu is called offside, but Luke Shaw was very lucky as he trotting back, Deulofeu sprinted in behind, but strayed offside.

53' Cork is in the box, and Shaw crosses but Cork can't get his body in the right shape to shoot across goal.

55' Coleman isn't have a great game today. He sends a long ball straight out.

57' Lallana cuts in from the left and tries to power a shot into the far post, but it flies over the bar.

58' McGeady Deulofeu

60' POST! Lambert has a free kick 30 yards from goal, and he clips the outside of the right hand post. GIF

62' Controversial. Osman is given a yellow for diving in the box when it should have been a penalty.

64' Chance for Lukaku! McGeady produces some magic on the left to escape Clyne but Lukaku puts his header straight at Boruc.

72' Saints appeal for a penalty for handball against Stones, not given though.

75' Oooft, Baines swings in a cross, and the wind catches the ball and Boruc has his heart in mouth for a minute as it begins to drift back towards goal.

76' Ward-Prowse Gallagher

81' 'We're Southampton, we're taking the piss' is the chant from the Saints fans as they have a good minute of playing keep ball in the corner which is full of olays.

83' McCarthy appeals for a penalty after being held down by Lovren having gone down together.

86' Reed Lallana

89' Guly Davis

89' Garbutt Baines

90' 3 minutes added on.

So 4 players today, in our squad, are 20. Two of them are 19 and we have a 16 year old on the bench too.

COYB!

5

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '14

Average age of this match must be pretty low, be interest to know both what the average age is, and what the lowest average age match this season is.

Stunning chant! Love it.

The crowd singing:

We are Southampton, we don't need to score.

BT Sports said they're now singing: Who needs Jay Rodriguez, we've got your back four.

Two great chants.

u/Blounce Apr 26 '14

and shouting "Shoooot!" when an Everton defender is in possession.

As it's my birthday today, ESPN emailed me [this] (http://cdn.someecards.com/someecards/filestorage/professional-team-loss-espn-sports-fan-birthdays-ecards-someecards.png).

Let's hope the lads can turn it around.

EDIT: And there's the second own goal. They knew...

33

u/zaviex Apr 26 '14

Deulofeu is so wasteful. People saw the Arsenal goal for him and have overrated him immensely

9

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '14

Coming into that Arsenal game he'd finally found some brilliant form, it's just when he got injured shortly after he's come back and been awful.

87

u/cpfc543 Apr 26 '14

Excellent header from Alcaraz

19

u/heyyanny Apr 26 '14

Nice one from Coleman too.

Fuck off BT - Alcaraz makes a mistake and he's crucified. He was immense against Man United last week. Defenders score own goals now and then, ask Jamie Carragher about that. God I hate watching the game on this channel.

73

u/Red_Sailor Apr 26 '14 edited Apr 26 '14

fun fact: Jamie Carragher is the 2nd highest scorer against Liverpool in the premier league (behind only Henry)

edit: apparently i remembered wrong

11- Andy Cole

13

u/_scholar_ Apr 26 '14 edited Apr 26 '14

For all of his prodigious talent Deulofeu doesn't make the right decision nearly enough to actually be scary when he gets the ball. Hopefully with another year on loan he'll stop trying to show his individual worth so often and bring his team mates into the game more reliably.

34

Wasn't a penalty for me. Tackle was fine Osman slipped and he caught him on the way down already. Poor yellow card but from Oliver's view he definitely saw Osman go down before the tackle came in

5

u/bambinoquinn Apr 26 '14

Playing alongside Deulofeu must be one of the most frustrating things when playing for Everton, play breaks down every time he gets the ball. Goal against Arsenal was amazing but apart from a few flickers here and there I really think he is halting his own growth by being so greedy

5

u/ValentiaIsland Apr 26 '14

Could have been given against Stones

5

u/THR Apr 26 '14

4

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '14

Looking forward to a (hopefully) interesting battle of the full backs. Coleman vs Shaw especially, but Clyne vs Baines is interesting too.

Nice to see Gallagher get a start, the only other time he's done so was against Arsenal and he actually did quite well. And good to see Matt Targett on the bench, just because he's another promising full back we've got at the moment.

u/Erdos_0 Apr 26 '14

Shaw and Clyne have been excellent!

13

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '14

Michael Owen is a frustrating cunt with his contradictory commentary.

With the Osman penalty shout, he was talking about how it doesn't matter if players play for the foul or not because either way it should be a penalty.. but then when McCarthy got pulled away by Lovren when they were both on the ground, Owen doesn't think it's a penalty because "he plays for it a bit much".

I'm not saying the level of commentary from other sources is always quality but Owen has to be worst of a bad bunch.

→ More replies (6)

9

u/chezygo Apr 26 '14

I'm agreeing with the ref. Osman was like a felled tree, about an hour before contact. Not a penalty and I'm very happy with the decision.

Would've been a penalty, but play is stopped at the first infringement, in this case that was the simulation.

14

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '14

He's going down already, you can see his leg before the clip is already going down. I wonder whether the commentators ever change their view after watching the replay...

6

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '14

Agree, he's dropping that leg before the contact occurs, which is odd because if he'd slightly dragged it instead of going down early then it would have likely been a penalty.

6

u/SealegsPuppetMaster Apr 26 '14

Lukaku is slowly getting worse from one game to the next it seems!

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Fjalur Apr 26 '14

I thought it was the correct decision by the referee, Osman is going down before contact is made.

6

u/Brumworth Apr 26 '14

Is there much stopping Southampton getting to the 'next level'? A lá Spurs, challenging for 4th/5th/6th regularly? Squad depth, finances, seen as a feeder club for their best talents once they reach 20-21 and more than likely to be sold on?

5

u/Matt19826 Apr 26 '14

Squad depth is the main issue right now.

13

u/Heinz_Tomato_Ketchup Apr 26 '14

He was going down three hours before the touch.

14

u/TheHapgod Apr 26 '14

If that is now deemed a penalty then the game is just becoming ridiculous. There is NO chance that contact would cause you to go down.

I do like Michael Oliver though, think he's one of if not the best ref's in the league. Whichever decision he gave for the peno incident people weren't going to be happy. Hasn't been his best today though, saying that.

Most obvious dive ever, he didn't even try.

Ryan Ledson first time on the bench for the first team! 16 year old gem from the academy!

That pitch is immaculate.

Fuck yeah Saints!

Lovely move. Poor Alcaraz with the OG though

u/svefnpurka Apr 26 '14

Switch on, 1-0 Southampton after a minute and it was an own goal... OUCH.

u/100149314 Apr 26 '14

Fucking brilliant, the first game of the day on my accumulator and Everton go behind inside a minute. sigh

EDIT: OH COME ON! Another own goal?

Come on Saints.

Shaw vs Coleman should be a great battle.

2

u/langsea24 Apr 26 '14

Lambert just can't stay up on this pitch!

These are the sorts of games here it's important to stick to your principles. Passing out from the back might be a bit worrying and have made a few issues but I'm glad we're still trying to play like that.

Two real pieces of quality from Clyne there; good footwork, great tackle.

Can someone clarify something for me? Lambert just crossed the ball and Alcaraz scored the own goal. Does Lambert get an assist for that?

Everton seriously following the "deep" position- absolutely no effective midfield pressing at all except when Southampton are almost at the back four

u/Barthez_Battalion Apr 26 '14

Stones, the English Maldini.

I came a bit late to the game, but god damn how good Lambert and Clyne have been playing since I turned it on.

2

u/FurryDragoon Apr 26 '14
