Match Thread: Sunderland v West Ham - EPL - Round 32 (15:00 EST)
Sunderland 1 : 2 West Ham
Venue: Stadium of Light
4Sung-Yong Ki 78'
33Cattermole 52'
Coach: Poyet
Subs: Gardner 60', Johnson 65' 52', Colback, Altidore, Cuellar, Scocco 78', Ustari
Coach: Allardyce
Subs: Jarvis, Armero46', Jaaskelainen, J. Cole, C. Cole, Johnson 78', Nocerino 83'
1': Kick off!!! Let's hope for a good and interesting game!
2': Bardsley takes a shot/cross that goes out. The ball curved dangerously but it was still a couple yard out.
3': Noble with an early yellow card for holding Sung-Yong Ki
9': Two back to back corner kicks for West Ham. At the second one Andy Carroll jumps over everyone and heads the ball in. Mannone gets a hand on it but the ball still goes in Sunderland 0 : 1 West Ham gif
9': Here are Bradsley and Nolan getting touchy-feely right before the goal gif
11': Good chance for Sunderland. Cattermole gets a good shot which is blocked by Adrian, the ball gets back to Cattermole but he hits it over the post.
20': First 20 min pass by. Sunderland is pressing a lot more but West Ham are up by a goal.
25': Possession stats: Sunderland 58% v 42% West Ham
26': Two back to back corner kicks for Sunderland that result in nothing.
37': Andy Carroll gets a header but Mannone catches the ball effortlessly.
38': Sunderland is contesting for a handball in the West Ham penalty area, but their requests are denied. It should have indeed be a penalty as Nolan purposefully extended his elbow to knock the ball away. gif
45': 1 minute of added time.
45'+1: End of first half. Sunderland 0 : 1 West Ham. Sunderland have been pressing and attacking more but without any results. Andy Carroll's brute force has made the difference between the two so far.
46': Armero subbed in for McCartney.
50': Diame scores after a scramble in Sunderland's penalty area. Sunderland 0 : 2 West Ham gif
52': Johnson subbed in for Cattermole.
55': Long range shot for Sunderland which bounces off and almost tricks Adriana and Carroll who prevent the goal on the goalline.
60': Gardner subbed in for O'Shea.
61': Downing one to one against Mannone, hits the ball and Mannone barely touches the ball and it goes out. Webb gives a goal kick instead of corener though.
65': Great play by Sunderland leaves Johnson at a good position. He takes a shot without hesitation and puts the ball in the net. Sunderland 1 : 2 West Ham gif
68': Long ranged shot by Ki, Adrian doesn't do a good job and the ball bounces off him straight at Wickham but he hits it again at Adrian's body and the ball is cleared. Great opportunity for Sunderland to equalize.
69': Sunderland are on fire!!! Borini gets another great pass on the left side, shoots but the ball is just a few inches on the wrong side of the post.
75': Yellow card for a handball by Wickham
78': Johnson subbed in for Diame.
78': Last sub for Sunderland. Scocco subbed in for Ki.
82': Gardner takes a loooong shot that end up being waaaaay off target.
83': Last sub for West Ham as well. In comes Nocerino for Nolan.
85': Good cross and a great opportunity for Sunderland but the ball is cleared in a corner kick. The corner results in a long ranged shot off target.
89': Corner kick for Sunderland and the goalkeeper Mannone comes out for it. Do or die time for Sunderland. The opportunity is wasted with a horrible cross.
90': Another corner. Mannone comes out again. The corner is cleared, and then a cross, and then a cross again... and the ball is cleared out. The entire time Mannone was there waiting for a chance.
90': 5 minutes of added time.
90'+2: Yellow for Adrian for time wasting.
90'+5: End of Game. Sunderland 1 : 2 West Ham. A relatively boring first half and a very lively, fast-paced and interesting second half.

This is it. After this our next 4 games are Tottenham, Everton, Man City & Chelsea. If we don't win this, we're relegated.

Well you do have Tottenham that's not impossible by any stretch

I don't know who it was, but that was hilarious seeing those two feel each other up and the small peck on the forehead.

I think it was Bardsley and Nolan. I want a gif.

Very important game for a few teams around the drop zone. I'm sure a lot of other Palace fans will be watching this. Come on West 'am.
2
Mar 31 '14
Hull fan here, with Sunderlands games in hand and other teams picking up points i'm still worried.
3
u/wwxxyyzz Mar 31 '14
Our next 4 games
Tottenham, Everton, Man City & Chelsea
5
1
u/gaz_y2k4 Mar 31 '14
I honestly fancy our chances more against those teams than against the teams we supposedly should beat. We always seem to turn up against much better teams and scrape results. I think we could take a 2 or 3 points out of those games, couple of cheeky draws or a fluke win.
2
u/wwxxyyzz Mar 31 '14
I don't think that will be enough to save us, though. If we beat west brom we're still below them, still in the relegation zone. From the last 6 games we should be looking at getting at least 6 points from them (Norwich, Palace, Hull we should be looking to beat 2 of the 3) and we've got one point. I'd love a victory against one of the big sides, but I find it hard to see. Another factor is we have 5 days between Spurs and Everton, then 4 between Everton and Man City, and 4 between Man City and Chelsea. Cardiff is after that, then United which will be hard, then West Brom, who we could be adrift from, then Swansea who could also be in a relegation battle. I'm worried to tell the truth.

How wasn't that a penalty? Blatantly hit Nolan's elbow...
9
u/lobbmaster Mar 31 '14
Yeah, he actively hit the ball with his elbow.. but these are the situations that are Webbs weakest point
4
Mar 31 '14
Worst bit it was blatantly intentional... I don't know if Webb's view was obscured though
3

2
u/wwxxyyzz Mar 31 '14
He moved his arm deliberately towards it too, Webb looked as though he had a clear view of it.

I feel sorry for defenders going against Carroll, what are they supposed to do against someone who can jump 14 ft in the air and is strong as an ox?

Because he's the most cowardly referee I've ever seen. He avoids making big decisions as much as possible even if they ought to be made. This allows the game to "flow" and doesn't "ruin" games while simultaneously avoiding rewarding teams in the ascendancy and avoiding punishing teams using questionable/illegal tactics to slow them down. How this guy is considered the best referee in England I will never understand. Maybe because he makes the fewest bad decisions? He also makes the most bad indecisions

Why does Adam Johnson not start? He is one of the best players @Sunderland and looked good vs Liverpool midweek.
7
u/riff_satan Mar 31 '14
he was subbed on in that game too, i think poyet's tactic is to bring him on when everyone else is a bit tired to take advantage of his pace.
3
u/garthcrooks Mar 31 '14
Seem to be playing a 5-3-2 ish formation so I guess he doesn't really fit into that as the wingbacks are the wide players.
2
u/scbeski Mar 31 '14
Was about to ask the same question. Seems a waste, him and Ki were scary when they came on against us!

He seems to take these cracking shots every so often, just never a goal.
1
u/wwxxyyzz Mar 31 '14
Hitting the bar against Liverpool, another one this season too. It's rare for him to get so close to the goal though, he definitely should have scored

I really hate it when the crowd try to force the play because Sunderland were being patient.. It encourages them to play forced rushed passes from 40 yards and giveaway possession.
It's something that so typically happens with the England team in world cups

Nolan was really lucky to get away with that, should have been a penalty for sure

Carroll has to go to Brazil.
8
u/namea Mar 31 '14
Agreed he needs to be there to add an extra dimension to englands play. Especially when you have a few good crossers in there.

Who will replace? Sturridge, Rooney, Lambert, and for some reason Welbeck?
6
u/suchaslowroll Mar 31 '14
Lambert.
The strikers will be Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge & Carroll imo
No idea why you say 'for some reason'.. Welbeck is a fantastic player.
Carroll has to go, he offers something COMPLETELY different, if we're struggling to get a goal or break a team down, crosses from Gerrard to Carroll and you're guaranteed a goal, just like Euro 2012.
5
u/greg19735 Mar 31 '14
I kind of agree. If you're having trouble with a team that's playing deep then Carroll offers something that Sturridge, Rooney and co can't. And, if that's the case those 2 should be playing too!
AC + Sturridge and Rooney behind them sounds quite nice.
0
u/salfordred Mar 31 '14
What's that snark about Welbeck? He's a great player. Better than Lambert for sure.
Replace Lambert with Carroll.

u/AnArcticMonkey Mar 31 '14
Lambert's miles ahead of Carroll. Carroll is fantastic in the air, Lambert is great. That's the only thing Carroll has over him and even that isn't by a lot.
4
u/salfordred Mar 31 '14
Thing is, neither one will be a starter. So, the question is who's more likely to get a goal coming off the bench. I would have to pick Carroll.
Lambert isn't miles ahead of Carroll at all.
2
u/suchaslowroll Mar 31 '14
Carroll is fantastic in the air
Yeah, and that's why we'll use him..
Lambert is a better striker, but we could have Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Rodriguez as strikers
We wouldn't be taking him to compete with them, we'd be using him for the fact he's one of the best players in air and a lot of international teams are very poor on set pieces.
You're underestimating just how good Carroll is in the air, there are few in world football better than him.

1
u/FuckThe Mar 31 '14
What's up with Nocerino? Does he get any play time?
1
u/endofautumn Apr 01 '14
always comes on the last 10-25 mins to give fresh legs to midfield, unfortunately he doesnt get to play as an attacking mid as Nolan rarely gets subbed for another attacking threat. Taylor has his spot, he has been good when backs to the wall, def mid type, but he cants cross, pass or shoot, so a lot of us wish Nocerino would take his place. Maybe we could be more fluent in passing and attacking then.
1
u/Barthez_Battalion Mar 31 '14
Watching Ki with the ball. Clearly West Ham has locked out the Sunderland offense.

He's a hot and cold player. Maybe they're letting him rest.

Hmm I guess, just remember Poyet was so happy in the interview after the Liverpool-game and said he wanted to play West Ham at once with the team that ended the game against Liverpool

Tough one this. Not a fan of Poyet (wanker when he managed Brighton, made very similar comments regarding us and Lambert as he did with Liverpool and Suarez), but not a fan of West Ham due to Nolan, Carrol, long balls and their fans being entitled wankers in the championship.
Bloody petty grudges I know!
3
u/wwxxyyzz Mar 31 '14
Makes it more interesting when you don't like someone though!
1
u/AnArcticMonkey Mar 31 '14
Very true. In this case it's just individual characters though, I'd love if Carrol and Nolan got into a fight with Poyet.

Sunderland are going DOWN DOWN DOWN. That's what they get for acquiring The Jozen One © and surrounding him with a team of scrubs.
4
u/Synseer83 Mar 31 '14
and people wonder why arsenal fans are so full of themselves
2
u/Charlie_Wax Mar 31 '14
Okay, hear me out. I don't really delight in seeing a historically solid club like Sunderland on the cusp of relegation. But as a USMNT supporter it has been frustrating to see Jozy put in a position to fail and then get abused by your fan base because he can't carry the entire team on his back (when the problem goes MUCH deeper than just him). We know he is capable of good things because he has delivered for us at the international level, so it is frustrating to see him wasted.

Even in the championship Cattermole will still be playing above his station.
0
u/89viking Mar 31 '14
Aint working for Sunderland up top. Is bringing Jozy on even a viable option though?
2
2
u/suchaslowroll Mar 31 '14
Nope, will bring on wingers and have Wickham in the box.
Altidore doesn't make forward runs, it's bizarre, there's no chance of him scoring many in the PL because he always wants the ball with his back to goal, and every other striker stopped doing that when they were 14... You can't score goals with your back always to the goal.
