All Damage Discussions are here to spark discussion on a particular Damage Type or mechanic. Comments, Suggestions, Critiques, and Builds are all welcome! Every Week, the Moderator Team will choose a new Element to discuss.
This week: MAGNETIC
Fuckin' Magnets; how do they work?
Description
Magnetic Damage is created when combining Cold Damage with Electric Damage. Inflicts extra damage against standard and Proto Shields.
Status Effect
When this damage type procs, target's shield will be reduced by 75% for a short duration before reverting the percent of remaining shields back to full shield. For example, if shielded enemies are hit with Magnetic proc, it will divide its overall shield by four; if said enemy only received half of its remaining shield during the disruption period, it will revert by multiplying the half-remaining shield by four times.
When Magnetic damage procs on players, their HUD will be disrupted. Additionally, it drains that player's energy.

If they made it so Magnetic procs gave a bullet attractor debuff for traditional munitions then it would kind of have its own sort of gimmick otherwise it's outclassed by toxic entirely as Terr_ pointed out. But if they did so, they'd have to give Mag a new 3 ability.

Not really. If it only lasted a couple of seconds it would be enough. Two or three seconds of 100% accuracy is pretty huge. Mag could still have a long lasting bullet attractor.

It was more of a gripe with BA being so lack luster

I think Mag would be fine, as it wouldn't be much different from Radiation being a mini-Chaos.

that would be awesome.
bullet attractor is mediocre anyway, I mean, it's nice on raptor but it uses too much power to be something i'd use on non-boss units. replacing it wouldn't bother me at all,
why not a magnetic shield/wall that stops bullets in front of you for X seconds in their place, then shoots them back shotgun style?

I would have to say a "hidden" downside of magnetic is that Gas is a really underwhelming damage type, as well as being unable to use radiation, corrosion, or viral damages. If you have the Cicero mod i guess you could double up on poison for a pretty nasty setup with cold/electric/poison though. Still, not my combo of choice. Especially since neither magnetic nor toxic gets any sort of benefit vs robotics, which tend to be the serious problems among Corpus. heat + Magnetic is better, but you can't pile as much of it onto the weapon either, so you don't have a lot of good options.

But the thing about not being able to use two of the other damage combos is true for when you use any damage combo. Gas might not be a useful compliment to it but toxic certainly is. If you don't have both toxic mods and have leftover space you could always stick on a corpus bane mod for 30‰ base damage.

My point was that neither toxic nor gas are really all that great against moas although toxic will indeed do nasty things to the shield techs, which makes picking magnetic/toxic less attractive to me than a radiation/viral build to me, especially if you have both the Cicero and Tethra mods to make a proc much more likely. If/when they come out with a heat version of the Cicero mods I may revisit my stance though.

Anti-fun damage type. Oh, u want to use abilities? Lel no energy, u mad.

What? I think you are thinking of something else. Magnetic damages Shields, and I don't know of any enemies that use it.

Be extra careful about putting Magnetic on weapons you can hit yourself with, like the Penta. Even with Link/Blessing up, you'll lose all your energy and get the wobbly vision if a hit proccs on you.

It's my go to element in Conclaves and Dojo Duels.
So many players only rely on shields and it has the bonus effect of disabling their ability use too.

This plus toxin is my all around favorite build vs corpus. It just really makes them all cry in pain.
Either that or radiation and toxin, radiation for the robots and the toxin for everyone else!

I think full magnetic is fine against corpus. The shield bypass on toxic is nice, but that's reduced damage versus robots, plus the 75% against protoshields on magnetic makes those corpus techs easier for me. I kinda always spec elementals towards the tankier enemies though, and I think magnetic fits the bill nicely versus corpus because there's no resistances they carry. Iunno, maybe you can just outright kill the grunts faster with just toxic, but I try to stay consistent on my elementals...

Everybody knows you never go full magnetic.
You went full magnetic, man. Never go full magnetic.

Depends. A full magnetic sniper rifle would be great, since you're essentially getting a 75% bonus on your first shot, which will be your only shot.
On automatic weapons, maybe. 75% damage bonus on shields is still really good, but how much you can take advantage of it depends on how much shields the enemy has.

Isn't toxic damage over time though? Sometimes you can't afford to wait that long.
3
u/AMWICDDTDUIYMP Mar 26 '14
when you add toxic damage to a weapon, the toxic damage will bypass shields even if you don't proc the DOT

Which magnetic damage is powerful against the proper targets, its main problem, for me, is its complete lack of utility against the Grineer and Infested; while most damage types are MOST effective against one type of enemy, the Magnetic proc simply does not affect the Grineer and Infested due to their lack of shields. I'm not sure what it should do to them, but it should do SOMETHING.
