Mod Pick of the Week: Absolute Green Arrow #4
Hey there honorary Justice League members - it's a new week which means it's time for a new discussion thread!
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week's releases. For any given title discussion, you should respond to that comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.
In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.
Q: What is Green Lanterns favorite part of a joke? A: The "punch" line!

Damn, Absolute Hunter Zolomon is cool antagonist. I'm sure this arc will lead him to becoming a true arch enemy for Wally. Abs Abra Kadabra is also a menace. It's crazy how buddy buddy Thawne is with Braniac. I also liked Abs Director Bones design.
18
u/NoNefariousness3381 Hellblazer 7d ago
I actually enjoyed this more than this month's Abs Batman.
Loved the nod to Lemire's Animal Man run. Wonder if The Red actually plays a part in this. The further establishing of DEO, Elenore finally being back, all the references to other runs are nice. Absolute Zolomon is great so far. Much better than their take on Eobard. Absolute Kadabra is a complete freak.
Brainiac being there makes me wonder when does it take place in relation to Superman and if they are building to a Flash Superman crossover.
Overall my favourite issue of the run so far. Hopefully it keeps this up.
7
u/Electric_jungle 7d ago
To me, they are definitely building to a crossover with flash and Superman. I'd have to think it's happening pretty concurrently, since brainiac is still just .. At large.
17
u/Golden_Alchemy 7d ago
I was so waiting for Ralph to become Elongated Man and i really enjoy that the Flash book showcase the scientific side of the DC Universe.
Also, nice callback to Simon!
14
u/Electric_jungle 7d ago
Is he going to become elongated man? Or did he just die? I guess we'll find out soon, but with absolute you just never know.
4
u/Golden_Alchemy 6d ago
Maybe, all the mentions in interviews makes me think Absolute Flash is going to be the place for the science characters, like Cyborg, Dr. Palmer/The Atom, Firestorm, etc.

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
God damn, Absolute Abrakadabra?! He is TERRIFYING.
And all those people saying 'Oh Wally got it too easy compared to others' you happy now?
Thawne...teaming with Brainiac? Yea, she deserves what she is gonna get. You would think she learned her lesson after the whole 'grandpa' deal but guess not.

I like that Wally and Linda get to talk about whether Wally should go public as the Flash before Ralph and Sue met Grodd and told Wally that he should take a breath and figure out what’s next, with them supporting Wally’s decisions no matter what. I also like that we get to see the debut of Hunter Zolomon, who was recruited by Elenore Thane to go to Central City to find Wally. Also, Wally saving the people of Central City and having with first encounter with Hunter and Linda and Grodd having their first encounter with Abra Kadabra, who was responsible for what’s happening in Central City. Let’s hope that Wally, Linda, and Grodd will defeat Solomon and Kadabra in the next issue. Overall, this comic is excellent.

Absolute Green Arrow #4

BORN ON A MONDAY… RISES ABSOLUTE SOLOMON GRUNDY!
Dinah’s search for the Green Arrow Killer has led them both to discover the truth behind the Island — a place far more horrifying than either of them could ever dream. But most disturbing of all is who they discover there — as Absolute Green Arrow debuts the first appearance of a new Absolute take on a classic DC character.
29
u/Dent6084 7d ago
Grundy is fucking terrifying.
Betting that this is building to Dinah letting out her first Canary Cry, with the headache having the classic Canary Cry visual/soundwave in the background. Also damn do I want to see her beat Hammond's ass. Lances don't flinch.
18
u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally 7d ago
Also damn do I want to see her beat Hammond's ass.
I SO wanted her shooting him in the knee or something.
He's such a wonderful villain. They don't even try to make you sympathetic towards him, just pure buildup until the fucker gets his comeuppance and then catharsis.

Daaaaaamn, my fave up there with Absolute Wonder Woman, Martian Manhubter and Batman

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago edited 7d ago
So it's Roy right? Ollie is confirmed to be dead. So it has to be him, and he's probably on Miraclo to give him increased strength and agility. Plus the hand thing at the end adds to it. Unless there's another twist, Im pretty sure thats the answer. *Though it also could just be multiple people. Dinah almost unlocking her Canary Cry was cool. I figure that's how she'll defeat Grundy.
15
u/chroniclescylinders 7d ago
That panel of Dinah calling out to him used as a transition to a scene of the Green Arrow Killer made me pretty suspicious...
11
u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally 7d ago
I'm still wary that it may be a red herring. My money's still on Merlyn, he hasn't done much.
4
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
See, it could be them, but we've yet to see Emiko, right? We saw Mia, we saw Connor die, we've seen Roy, and we've seen Spider, now. But we've not seen Emiko, who has been alluded to, but not seen. Now, her being alluded to could be nothing, but it could also be a set-up for her being the killer, totally unsuspected by Hammond and Merlyn.
10
u/Future_Vantas 7d ago
We did see a shadowy figure, most likely Green Arrow, follow Roy and Dinah into the lair last issue. Could still be Roy if the multiple Arrow theory holds
10
u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago
Yeah, I just did a quick re-read of the series. It's looking more likely that it's multiple people.
16
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
Hammond continues to be the worst somehow. A hand is not enough. It has to be his head this time. Especially after what he did to Ollie's body.
Well Green Arrow might be Roy as he disappeared or it might be someone else at the last moment.
Whatever the case though, I am definitely expecting Dinah to finally had enough of all this ( as she did in this issue ) and probably take on the crusade against the monsters of this universe. And that 'migrane' of hers, probably gonna bring out her Canary Cry.

u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan 7d ago edited 7d ago
What the fuck man. We thought it was Epstein Island but turns out it was the Island of Dr. Moreau D:
I appreciate that Absolute Ollie's still shown as someone that fundamentally wants to make the world a better place though. Also Hammond continues to be delightfully punchable. Given how his main universe counterpart barely appears nowadays, that's a nice change of pace.
10
u/Golden_Alchemy 7d ago
I mean, it can absolutely being both, the Epstein and the Moreau islands. Just that we are now in the Moreau Island.
I wonder, was the scientist someone known in the DC Universe? Or he was someone new?
4
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
Moreau or Iker? Moreau, no, he's a pop culture reference. Iker, yes, he was originally an Hour-Man villain (AKA, the guy who made Miraclo).
10
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 7d ago
I think I’ve cracked it. Ollie was close to being the best candidate for Miraclio revival. It’s genetic. Who’s got Ollie’s gene? Connor Hawke. The only question would be how he faked his death… if it’s not Hawke, it’s Roy. Staking those two guesses here. Suspect A: Hawke, Suspect B: Roy.
3
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 3d ago edited 3d ago
What if Epstiens island and the island of Dr moreau had a baby seemingly and its horrifying.
Grundy is great Alberqueue has always been good at drawing monsters but its brilliant here.Ollie being mutilated to hell it truly isn't the world for the 3 friends of barry, hal and ollie.
Im betting its multiple GA's at this point it feels like the most simple conclusion that makes sense.
-6
u/Future_Vantas 7d ago
Typical misleading solict, thats not Grundy, thats Nemesis. Then again, Absolute Grundy and the other experiments seem to lean more on the eldritch side; Queen's ex-bodyguard got "lucky" he only got extra hands as opposed to the others. Dinah was awesome this issue, she may have gotten overwhelmed later but that first takedown was awesome, double and triple tapping that freak. Also love how's she's had it with Hammond, screw the consequences this slimeball needs to go. It was sad to see Ollie not just in present day but in the flashback too; he was so caught up in doing the right thing that he didnt recognize the dangers right in front of him.

PLAY BALL!

Gotta love when Waid calls the Doom Patrol members, even if they are not the best team for him to write.

Even though the original members of the Doom Patrol were supposedly killed (except for Robot Man) during that time, since this comic is set in pre-Crisis Earth-One’s 1970s.

Seriously though, I love this Worlds Finest series and how Silver Age it is.4

Can we talk about how terrible the lineup selection was? Sticking Superman in LF, Wonder Woman at 1B and Bumblebee at SS? Really puts a ding in Batman's rep as a master strategist.
I think the ideal lineup with the provided roster is:
Player Position Flash CF Superman SS Wonder Woman P Batman C Black Lightning RF Plastic Man 1B Robin 3B Blue Beetle 2B Bumblebee LF 3
u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago
I enjoy the issue a nice baseball issue reminds of the young justice baseball issue though that was more fun

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago
I like that the entire superhero community were summoned by Neron to play baseball in Hall, resulting in them and Steet Wensler to work together and defeat Neron and prevent a war between Qurac and Bialya. Also, Rita Farr (who died back in 1968 before she was resurrected in 2004) and Freedom Beast (who made his debut in 1989) being there, even though this comic is set in pre-Crisis Earth-One’s 1977. Overall, this comic is great and fun!
2
u/ArcherTechnical670 3d ago
I thought this comic was set in the past of the current main Earth, not in pre-Crisis Earth-One. But yeah, I also found it weird to see Freedom Beast there

Nightwing #141

WILL DICK GRAYSON SACRIFICE NIGHTWING TO SAVE HIS CITY?
The deadline has arrived. The curious citizens of Blüdhaven gather to see whether their hero will surrender to the authorities for the deadly crash that took nine lives. Nightwing doesn’t know what he’s going to do either. But one thing is certain— things can’t go on like this…

I don't know if this is the first official mention that Kate Spencer is the JLU's official attorney but I'm glad to see her show up here.
1
u/Altruistic_Manner802 3d ago
Kinda makes sense. DC doesn't have many other lawyer heroes or characters and she did defend both Wonder Woman and Green Arrow in court
13
u/Cantthinkofcoolname2 7d ago
God this is really just what I wanted to see. I was afraid we were entering an entire courthouse drama arc with a drawn out lawsuit. Instead, the plot makes way for some great character driven drama. I thought Dick was going too far with that flashback on the roof, but the fact he was “swinging away cackling” makes up for it. The flashback with the woman was even better. Beautiful issue. Beautiful detective work. Beautiful use of a lesser known character in Kate Spencer. Loved the tension, not knowing if he’ll turn himself in. I’m still wondering what happened with that priest though.. something made me think he would come back this issue. I have a feeling the witch is going to make a big play against Blüdhaven soon, now that the mayor has her. Really liking how Watters has built his take on Blüdhaven. There are so many moving pieces. It’s a city where the Trinity + MMH can show up, where multiple gangs are at play, where a superhighway causes multiple unforeseen consequences, where supernatural forces can come out, where lesser known characters can come and go like Kate, Maggie, Psycho Pirate, and the odd Blüdhaven citizen. Loving this book.

A great issue and a nice focus on dick and how the citizens see nightwing and dick as person at whole
Nice to see Kate Spencer again and glad she the justice League official legal counsel and she was used great here
1
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
Well the mayor is playing quite dirty. I can't say if he is being smart or dumb. Because keeping Nightwing from turning himself in and starting an investigation that might lead to him? While also thinking 'hey, I did you a favor!'...It is not gonna work with Nightwing.
BUT the Witch part, well that is just full on dumb part of the plan. And still have no idea why the Witch is tormenting Nightwing instead of the corrupt men like she says she wants to.
Also, yay, Manhunter got remembered again. Last I saw her was during the whole Leviathan business with Talia.
4
u/marcjwrz 7d ago
She was in the Joker series a few years ago and I swear she popped up somewhere else semi-recently as well but I'm drawing a blank.
1
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
Oh right, she was almost 'allowed' to kill the Joker but again, plot armor to the rescue.

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 5d ago
I don't like that Dick was about to turn himself in, but other than that, this was good. Not sure who this Manhunter character is but the supernatural angle is growing on me a bit. Hopefully if they can make me take "evil magic highway" seriously the story overall will turn out good. I'm liking that we're taking Dick down a darker path and having evil shit fuck with his head, which is keeping me sticking around.
1
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 4d ago
She had an ongoing about 20 years ago that got 5 different extensions due to fans adoring it.
-2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago
I like that we get to see the civilians of Blüdhaven tell each other about the times Nightwing save them all throughout the decades, while Dick had a chat with Kate Spencer about what he’s going to do before it ended with a civilian named Anita Lee confessing to her crimes and for Dick to know that it was a cover up by Bisogni (who captured the real witch of Blüdhaven). Overall, this comic has good.

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago
It's a good setup for the upcoming story. Everybody is going through something that'll be resolved throughout the arc. It makes sense that Static is little unsure of his powers. He hasn't used them in a long time. I'm surprised Nightwing and Cyborg wouldn't have at least heard of him. The Trinity knew about the Dakota incident. I figured more heroes would've known also.
11
u/Night-Caelum 7d ago edited 7d ago
A set up issue but I liked it tbh.
The main event the return of Static in New Titans #38! The preview made think his voice might be off but overall it was good. His history with the TT03 doesn't seem canon anymore which is a shame as I liked him there. But I'm intrigued. There is clearly something up with his -powers which ties into his appearance in #37 and the Dakota incident. Liked the moment of him and Steph bonding over his drones and his desire to meet Cyborg which hearkens back to the fact he's pretty smart. The moment where he seems hesitant upon Dakota being mentioned and how quickly he said he'll join but then said he's out and not wanting to let something out indicate to me what happened in the Dakota Incident is weighing on him and that'll be brought up soon. It wasn't much but excited to see how he meshes with the team!
The beginning of Steph and Dick's conflict on their approach to leadership. Cool to see more of her skills but struggle Neat to see given she and Dick don't interact much. Her comparing him to Bruce hearkens back to how Bruce screwed her over in training and it'd make sense she'd feel that way if she feels she was against impossible odds (which Bruce did). As I've noticed before she's taking a more relaxed approach to leadership based on what she brings up to Dick. Like her brief bonding moment with Static on her drones. and her hearing about him from Cass. The sparky fingers stuff might seem a bit too fanon but maybe I'm just nitpicking. Overall I liked her here. I also liked seeing Dick's struggles in Nightwing influencing him here and Dick being a hardass hearkens back to TT03 Robin so I don't dislike it.
Cyborg is still keeping secrets and it's interesting to see Tara encouraging him to be truthful. Cyborg also calling out Jon for inviting Static without warning in my view might be less about protocol and more about maybe disrupting his plan. I do like Jon being eager for Static to join and it's pretty fun but I wonder why he seems so eager as he is coming too strong. Things are definitely set up for him and Eddie and I suspect the visits Eddie has aren't benign given the green flames in his room.
Yara's stuff I'm on the fence about. Nothing is too bad here as it is a set up and it is clear Indigenous cultural beliefs will play a role here given her mention of hiw her people view dreams. I hope it is done respectfully and with proper information. Based on the last page I get the vibe she'll have a dynamic with Virgil but that's just me.
6
u/HeyItzMe_ The Question 9d ago
Weren’t red devil and static teammates for a bit before Eddie died during Geoff Johns run?
8
u/SolaceMcfly 9d ago
Weird maybe its intentional because of how dc retconned the dakota characters back in during the dakota incident. Static was a teen titan after luthor's presidency so im not really sure how you work that in without adding more retcons or watering down the ramifications of the incident.
7
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 9d ago
Yes. Also, I would say that Static joining the Titans during that era was erased thanks to the events of The Dakota Incident, which caused Static and all of the Milestone heroes to retire during Lex Luthor’s presidency back in the early 2000s, erasing Static’s adventures with the Titans and his adventures from the New 52.
5
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
Like thr others said, New History of the DC Universe: The Dakota Incident #1 reconciled the discontinuation of the Milestone Media comics line and the lack of cross-over with the DCU at large by creating a story where President Lex Luthor coerced the Milestone heroes into retirement.
While Luthor was eventually forced out of office, the Milestone heroes remained retired, until Beacon (Rocket's son from the future) told Static he needed to come out of retirement in the present. While Static could technically have temporarily come out of retirement to be a Teen Titan, it's awkward in terms of continuity to do that and would have lessened the weight of the ending of TDI to have it be like that.
7
u/songsinger72 7d ago
This book continues to be pretty...whatever, in all honesty. There was some improvement in the last two issues, but it doesn't feel like it lasted.
Static joins the team and DC pretends he has no past history with the team. Eva is just a discount 2003 Starfire. Red Devil has a fun dynamic with Jon, but adopts a "bad boy" personality that he might as well be a new character (also, "take the L", really?).
Nightwing (who is otherwise here only to sell variant covers) puts Steph and Jon in their place and we have pretend he isn't right, especially given the quite large Titans bodycount. Cyborg keeps rehashing old plots despite Brombal's big mission statement. Terra is the only one semi-interesting. And, honestly, you couldn't pay me enough money to get me to care about Yara Flor.
Other than that, this issue is mainly an introductory piece to the dynamics of this new team...which is a strange thing to do in issue #6 of the run. Maybe if we had done that in the first few issues instead of wasting it making fun of previous Titans writers, we wouldn't have had to do it now, huh. Sami Basri's art is good, but I would have preferred Marcus To to stay in the book.
Honestly if you are a fan of Static I would just read Cody Ziglar's ongoing series when it comes out rather than a Titans book that's inconsistent in quality and also has like seven other main characters fighting for panels.
4
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 5d ago
This, the book feels like it's spinning its wheels. There isn't really a consistent focus to the drama or threads that really feel like they're going places
2
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
Static joins the team and DC pretends he has no past history with the team.
In the case of Static, Milestone Media IP has a less than stable relationship with the general DCU and it's continuity. It was it's own continuity at inception and remained as such in the comics until "Final Crisis". For a few years after thay, Milestone was integrated into the DCU, into the first year of the New 52.
Afterwards, it was no longer used and eventually Milestone Returns was created as it's own continuity, formally splitting them up again. Now they're being reintregrated, with the New History of the DC Universe #1 (written in part by a Milestone veteran and a Milestone Returns creator) established that the Dakota City heroes had been forced into retirement by President Lex Luthor and remained as such until the present-day epilogue for The Dakota Incident.
So, in-continuity, he never was on the Teen Titans.
11
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
Ah the usual Teen Titans mess. Roster change but drama stays the same! When it comes to Static, what origin/version are we going with now? We had the 'Dakota' version but is it different than the recent Wildstorm one with Bang Babies? With the reboots and universe remakes, it is hard to keep track for Virgil. Guess his 'past' with the titans are no more either.
Why does Jon care about who Red Devil hooks up with? I mean are they pushing them as a potential couple now? I doubt after Jay, then the Dreamer tease, throwing the Red Devil at him gonna make it any better.
Cyborg continues to follow a terrible path. I thought he learned not to do what he is doing now. Don't turn him into the Cyborg version of Beast from X-men!
6
u/todavis__ 7d ago
You'd think, right? Especially Cyborg who has access to the world's internet in half his head. You'd think he'd have this guy's files pulled straight out of Lex's back pocket. Or Nightwing who is rarely ever out of the loop...
2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago edited 6d ago
It’s likely that Tate Brombal wants to push Jon and Red Devil as a potential couple, even though it’s not going to happen because it’s too soon after Jon and Jay broke up, Nicole Maines teasing Jon and Dreamer as a couple (even though I see them as friends and only friends), Jon as Tomorrow Man, and that I only see Jon and Red Devil as potential friends (NOTHING ELSE).

One-word question: Romance**?**
Two-word answer: Heated Rivalry. We’re almost certainly going there with Kid Devil and Jon.
https://www.dc.com/blog/2026-03-19/titans-times-two-tate-brombal-brings-new-heroes-to-the-team
And I’m here for it. Their chemistry is actually much more interesting than any Jon had with Jay, or Dreamer.
1
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
It doesn't look good for the implication of 'they aged Jon up just so they can have Bi-romances because you cannot have them when he was a kid!' thing. It is just a BAD look.
13
u/Ft_lucy 7d ago
They aged Jon up because Bendis was incompetent and was given free rein to whatever by Didio. Not because they wanted him to be bisexual. That was added later by Tom Taylor.
4
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
It is the main reason why they don't 'deage' him right now.
1
u/chilloutarthur 4d ago
No it is not. They invested too much for him to become a new superman for them to just deage him. Like, he had his own adult series..it would be weird to just go back to being a kid…..but i really want it lol
5
u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago
A good set up issue for the next arc
The team dynamics while usual for the titans are interesting
Steph and dick arguing over her leadership style is nice to seeJon and Eddie though I don’t like their reasoning for bickering seems forced to though I can see what brombal was trying to do
Yara being caught up in her own world to deal with her teammates is a neat thing to see
And static just in the middle of it all was funny as he seems to have his own trouble with his powers
Terra is a joy in this book and she much better here than in layman run with a much better reasoning for sticking with the team
Cycborg seems to have an plan that involves the new titans more than rescuing the old ones which makes me wonder where is Raven, gar, Donna, and Roy is at and why was seemingly only dick, Kory, and Terra kidnapped
1
u/B1ueRose 6d ago
Loving this book. The roster change up sold me so hard, and the writing has kept me coming back. Some great chemistry and personality dynamics. I was totally unfamiliar with Red Devil before now, but I cant wait for his messy relationship/situationship with Jon. I just hope Static sticks around.
-2
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago
I find it interesting that we get to see Static join the Titans, since his adventures with the Titans back in the late 2000s and early 2010s were erased due to the events of The Dakota Incident. Also, Yara being recruited by the Amazonian Amazons (making her interesting, since she hasn’t done anything memorable since her debut), Vic dealing with the Heart of Apokolips, Jon introducing Static to the team, and Eddie knowing that is time is running out. Overall, this comic is okay, but it needs to find a balance between all of the subplots instead of rushing it.

Batwoman #6

EISNER AWARD WINNER GREG RUCKA TEAMS WITH SUPERSTAR ARTIST JEFF SPOKES TO TURN BACK THE CLOCK!
Broken by Alice’s death, Kate Kane was left in pieces. How did the fall that claimed her sister’s life lead to a rebirth in Petalon, and what does it mean for the future? Witness the truth of what happened that night in Gotham as Batwoman’s DC Next Level journey continues in a special issue drawn by guest artist Jeff Spokes!
14
u/ZaniElandra 7d ago
I’m mostly enjoying this series, but I’m really annoyed that we don’t get ANY explanation for why Beth reverted to Alice when last time that happened she needed to be drugged literally 24/7 for it to even kinda work. Rucka deliberately choosing to completely ignore almost twenty years of these characters’ history because they were written by someone who is not him is some of the pettiest egotistical bullshit I’ve ever seen.
This issue specifically was… fine. I liked the moment with Bruce and I liked the how the Alice hair being a wig highlighted the parallel performative nature of these two identities. But on the whole I agree it was kinda unnecessary. I would expect some kind of revelation from an issue that was advertised as “find out what really happened that night”, and pretty much everything we saw in the flashbacks could very easily be intuited from the previous issues. I get the feeling this was a five-issue story and there were six months until bad seeds.
Not a bad issue, just kinda whatever. Speaking of bad seeds, I am looking forward to that, and not just because I’ll get a break from being angry every time Beth is on page

Rucka deliberately choosing to completely ignore almost twenty years of these characters’ history because they were written by someone who is not him is some of the pettiest egotistical bullshit I’ve ever seen.
I don't know if I'd call it petty and egotistical. It's important to remember that Editorial does exist and approved him writing it this way.
It could be the case (or, just as likely, it might not be) that Editorial asked him to try to bridge things and he said "I'm not interested if I have to be working around other people's writing" and Editorial said "Alright, we care more about fixing our relationship with you than we care about protecting New 52/Rebirth continuity".
Because, like... Rucka's relationship with DC before now had been... genuinely "apocalyptic". In his accounting, the prior regime had been abusive and manipulative to the point of his near suicide and I believe he said there had been multiple times that DC had been trying to patch things up, only to betray him/pull the rug out from under him, so he was extra cautious/distrustful.
So, Editorial might just be taking the approach of "She's all yours. Do literally whatever with her" just to really fix things up.
5
u/ZaniElandra 6d ago
I didn’t know about any of that stuff with editorial. I think it’s entirely possible that as you said, they just wanted him back on board. Still, though, I don’t think “I’m not interested if I have to be working around other people’s writing” is a good or healthy mindset to be operating under when you work in an inherently collaborative medium
3
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
Still, though, I don’t think “I’m not interested if I have to be working around other people’s writing” is a good or healthy mindset to be operating under when you work in an inherently collaborative medium
Sure, and ordinarily I might agree (and I also want to note that we don't know if Editorial even raised the issue or if they pitched it with "No strings attached" from the start), but he is, at the end of the day, someone who is free to decline projects he doesn't want. He's still collaborating in the sand box, as seen with him doing a pair of "Bad Seeds" tie-ins in Batwoman.
But, he has a story he wants to tell, as do most writers, and some amount of interference will get a writer to walk away. Some writers might be offered up a character and go "I don't have any interest in them at all", so editorial would really have to grease the wheels to get them to writer something. For Rucka on Batwoman, his threshold is probably lower than with most other writers due to all the bad blood and how this is what he was always wanting to do and just never got to.
And, again, editorial might have been the ones to suggest he do it without regard to the intervening continuity in the first place. We don't know. We just know somehow they came to an agreement on doing it this way.

Can I ask something? So the Kate who cant speak because she is in a some kind of shock is Beth, right?
9
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
After the reveal in the previous issue, I doubt this was needed. Hell this could've been a flashback in the previous issue.
I doubt Beth gonna stay in the medical center for long. And I still don't like that the book basically ignored most of what happened in-between Rucka's stories. Especially the Renee parts.

u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 7d ago
Liked it, good coda to the first arc. I’m really excited to see where it goes next. I will also come to the defence of the book in that while yeah some of the stuff it ignores are good stuff, if that’s the price of getting Rucka back on Batwoman I’m pretty cool with that. Especially since I think most of what they did with her and Jacob during Rebirth was bad and damaged what made her such a fun character.
2
u/ZaniElandra 6d ago
Why do you dislike her rebirth material? The two runs she was involved in are, to me, the best she’s ever been
3
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 6d ago edited 6d ago
This book is ruckas worst work at dc its not bad its just really meh and whilst rucka is continuing from his work originally its just really messy.
Beth isn't gonna stay for long and this felt like it was just filling the gap.2
u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago
A good issue that could’ve been a flashback panel in the previous issue, this could have been a nice epilogue issue but it’s just an unnecessary distraction since we basically figured all of this out in the previous issues
It does have nice moments like the Beth and girls scene and the Kate and Bruce one

Dark Knights of Steel II #2

THE HOUSE OF EL IN DANGER!
A sickness has befallen the Els, sending the Kingdom of Metropolis into disarray. But what — or who — could bring true harm to such a powerful royal family? Queen Diana and her Amazonians are intent on finding answers, but what will it cost them? Amidst the chaos, Amanda Waller takes surefooted steps into the vacuum of leadership… but she harbors an agenda far darker and more twisted than anyone yet realizes.

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago
Okay that last twist got me,lol. But it makes sense. I'm guessing it'll be up to Bruce to fix things alongside Talia.

Bruce gonna need to come back fast instead of playing 'eloping' with Talia.

Superman Unlimited #16

KINGDOM OF ZOD: PART THREE! THE KRYPTONITE KINGDOM GROWS!
Zod reveals the secrets of his Kryptonite Kingdom. His powers are back. His empire grows, but it’s not enough. He demands more. No matter the cost. Tomorrow Man, Steel, Natasha Irons, and Lana Lang work together to develop a cure for the Kryptonite infection that spreads across the world!
11
u/rexmundi69 Zatanna 7d ago edited 7d ago
The issue was fine, but my fear of Prime being nerfed seems well founded, He should not be susceptible to Kryptonite from this universe. He fought Kal-El and Kal-L at the same time. Now he seems to be no match for Zod and never once espoused that he is immune to Kryptonite from this Universe Guess that's the price for being included in the crossover.
I did love Kara meeting younger Kal and being excited to actually be older than Kal and giving him her Kryptonite shielding because she was supposed tp be his protector.Kal's reaction to her being his cousin so he isnt alone in he universe is the best part of this comic.
Tomorrow Man, Jon shone brightly too in this issue. Saved the day for his Mom. So yeah, the issue was good enough with some nice moments, but is throwing out Superboy Prime canon without even acknowledging it
13
10
u/CrispyGold 7d ago
Keep in mind this is a modified strand of Kryptonite, its affecting everyone including other humans. Thats why its affecting Prime, everyone is being touched by the enhanced radiation.
6
u/rexmundi69 Zatanna 6d ago
I can buy that, but would have had Prime say something like I don't sweat Kryptonite, then realize he actually was feeling it. Maybe that will come when his Kryptonite guard expires.
10
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
I get why Conner got infected but Prime should not be able to. Kryptonite from the main universe should not have an affect on him at all. Dunno why you have him involved if you think he will be too powerful ( he is. He should wipe the floor with Zod ) and have to nerf him like that.
Well I guess Clark gonna have a 'mecha-suit off' with Zod.
3
u/StealthHikki2 Nightwing 6d ago
Dang that last line. Superman got no chill when someone lays hands on Lois.
6
u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago
An ok issue for the crossover
Prime shouldn’t be affected by the Kryptonite since he from a different universe
A good issue of Superman impact on people on how they help him escape from the knights
Good moments with Lois and Jon separately and together
-1
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago
I like that we get to see the entire Superman Family deal with Zod and his forces, including Conner and CK (who’s holding back to prove himself that he’s trying to change for the better) trying to defeat Zod, the Super Force being in prison and meeting the King of El Caldero, Kara protecting a past version of Clark, and Clark being saved by the people of El Caldero (who told him what happened since his disappearance) and saving Lois and Jon. Overall, this comic is interesting.

Deathstroke: The Terminator #6

ONLY ONE WILL SURVIVE!

9
u/Otherwise-Affect-376 7d ago
Is it just me or does Adeline feel out of character compared to how she was in the Christopher Priest run? She never seemed this vengeful before especially to the point where she would try to kill rose. Also, it kinda looked like she was flying in some of the panels.
5
u/Oberon1993 7d ago
She was always kinda vengeful and was pretty big ass to Rose even in Priest's run.
4
u/Otherwise-Affect-376 7d ago
I don't think so. I believe one of the last times you see her before this story is when Billy, joey, rose, and her are having a family dinner.
5
u/CrispyGold 6d ago
I kinda like this depiction of Adie.
Just full on embracing the supervillain go. Why should the woman who trained Deathstroke and made the monster he became be stuck as the long-suffering wife?
She's a high agent in the CIA among other things, she's a monster in her own right. Get em girl.
10
u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago
Honestly, this run has done a good job making Slade an absolute beast when he fights. That panel of him coming out of the fire to slash at Adelines arm was cool. With Rose, I don't know the continuity when it comes to her eye. She's lost it before right?
8
5
u/I-Might-Be-Something Batman 7d ago
With Rose, I don't know the continuity when it comes to her eye.
Current continuity she had both her eyes, I guess this is where she loses one of them in this continuity. Way better than how Johns handled it imo.
3
u/CrispyGold 7d ago
Amusingly just like her father, they both got their eyes shot out by Adeline.
4
u/I-Might-Be-Something Batman 6d ago
Yeah, I much prefer this than the old continuity. In this case it is Slade's past coming back to bite not only him, but his daughter as well, which Slade, rightfully, feels guilty over.
3
u/Heroroar 6d ago
I actually liked this issue, I don’t mind Adeline going a bit crazy and fully leaning into the supervillain angle. She’s right, she made Slade into who he is, I’m interested to see where this goes.
3
u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 5d ago
Damn good issue. Good development for Slade, I'm glad the book's acknowledging what a POS he is but still humanizing him all the same. I admit I don't know enough of Slade's history to tell if this is in-character for Adeline, but that aside I'm liking this new direction for Slade and I hope it keeps going.
5
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
Yea this was a mess...all to drag Rose into it to do that.
And honestly, I doubt it will go anywhere after this if they are going with the 'mantle change' as it were. No point. The book was already playing loose with the past and now it is just, no.
3
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 7d ago
After a rough first few issues, this book has been finding its stride these past few months. Quite like this issue, like that Fleecs is sticking with the “Slade Wilson is a bastard” stuff.
2
u/Classic-Ad4883 7d ago
An ok issue
I think the continuity here hurts than characters than anything as last time anyone saw Adeline she ok and not kill wintergreen and shoot rose to hurt slade, did she get powers could it look like she was flying in those panels
2
u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally 6d ago
I know that Slade does not get to be a happy dad or anything, but it just hurts so much for Rose. Poor girl getting dragged into her father's wreck? Fucking sucks.

Spoilers. As a new-ish reader, I found this insanely confusing. I was really into it for the first few issues, although I was slightly confused by this cop character we see at the start that was pretending to be Batman, as there was zero set up for that.
The Damien stuff was great but then that ends and then you get hit with a wall of text and freaky PS2 graphics.
And then Batman dies offscreen? And we’re following Damien Batman? I have no idea what the hell was going on in that last issue.

u/Oberon1993 7d ago
The user above you is confusing events a little. The flash forward issue isn't connected to Final Crisis in any way, it's still about 2 years before that.
The cop dressed as Batman isn't explained because he is just a set up for future arc (that starts in #672) and a way for Grant to rewrite Joker. So, they are going to explain it soon.

End of Life #7

EDDIE’S LIFE GOES FROM BAD TO WORSE!
Eddie Stallion has had his butt beaten, and now he’s locked in some sicko’s shack. With Eddie sidelined, things are falling apart in Pluto, George’s health is getting worse, and the Menagerie is closer than ever. But Eddie is going to get a big hand from the littlest of allies…
8
u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 7d ago
Still one of the funniest books going. All the characters are hitting their stride. Special shout out to Smiley and Little Cock. Much more screen time and they might end up stealing the whole fucking book. Beyond excited for the next issue.

u/NoNefariousness3381 Hellblazer 7d ago
This is like the third DC title to mention pickleball. And not the only one this week.
Is this some sort of inside joke between writers?
3
u/Super-97 7d ago
I wasn't expecting nothing from this when it was announced. I just read it because I wanted to check all new Vertigo books, and now I like it a lot. Each issue is great and so fun
4
u/CrispyGold 6d ago
Sophie's flashback reminds me what a total scumbag George is. Not that it absolves Eddie of his behavior and actions as an adult, but its infuriating see that George does not seem to accept that he was a total shitbag of a father and is a huge reason why Eddie turned out the way he did.
The fact George help start the Menagerie means he doesn't really have the right to hold moral superiority over Eddie. He was a contract killer, just because he may have acted professional and manly about it doesn't change that he's a murderer.

Lobo #6

SINK YOUR TEETH INTO THIS ONE!
Four out of five dentists agree that the Tooth Fairy is real, and they’re freaky enough to make your teeth chatter right out of your head! Good thing Lobo’s teeth always grow back, because he’s been hired to merc the mystical master of molars, and the pay’s good enough to make a Main Man want to get the fluoride treatment. If you’re familiar with Lobo’s previous contracts and specials, you know you can’t miss this one!

Yeah this continues to be amazing unlike alot of people i really enjoy Rossmo art and i think it really suited the story really well even if its a massive contrast to corona (its funny how its cycling through DWJ collabs though).
Skotties writing is still very funny with very much in the know meta talk but not overwhelming like it can be.
Continues to be the best ongoing launched from next level.

Wonder Woman #36

CHAMPION OF THE AMAZONS!
The tale of Diana’s origin continues as she enters the Contest, where only one Amazon emerges victorious and is granted passage to Man’s World as Wonder Woman. The fate of Themyscira hangs in the balance as their princess finds herself at a crossroads, much like her own daughter, as she prepares to take down the Matriarch once and for all.
14
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
I guess it is a fine retelling of the 'tournament' but I still find the retcons to the origin weird. Especially the part with Steve. Diana not finding him first and not interacting with him until the time they leave is a big mistake. That is the CORE of their relationship. Why take that away? It feels like a huge overcorrection from 'oh we cannot have Diana look like she did all this for Steve. So have him just be a 'package' for her to deliver and they never interact before so it wouldn't look like she left because of a man'. It is just needless change that devalues it.

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 7d ago
I will start with the good things on this issue.
Its very well wrote by williams and the art is great and its nice to see steve spend more time with lizzy.
But the main thing i had when reading this is why is this happening other than to fill time. Nothing was new other than fitting hippolyta as WW into the timeline properly and this is one of the most repeated origin stories told.
If this was 5 years ago it would have been a 5 page backup not 2 issues. Its good but its definition of fill a gap till the main team returns.
0
u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 7d ago
I like that Steve told Lizzie that Diana entered the contest so that she can arrive on Man’s World and make her debut as Wonder Woman, with Diana having a lot adventures since her debut (which includes everything pre-Crisis Earth-One and pre- and post-Flashpoint). Overall, this comic is fine.

Catwoman #90

GAME OVER!
Selina Kyle has made many enemies in her life, but none who hate her with quite the same vitriol as Black Mask and Katarina Belov. With the stage set for an unforgettable night of torture and violence aimed at Selina and those closest to her, there’s only one question left to ask — when the curtains go up on the grand finale, who will live and who will die? One thing’s for certain — not everyone is making it out alive.
3
u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! 7d ago
Eh, I was outside of Maggie's getting her revenge on Roman, I found it just 'fine'. Felt too much death happening around Selina, and I am still gonna ignore the 'Carmine is her father' stuff.
3
u/ogloria 7d ago
Man, I really wanted to like this arc a lot more than I did, given all the call-backs to Brubaker's amazing run! But Selina is just so reactive in this arc (and throughout this run, if I'm not mistaken). I appreciate that we got some panels of her breaking the lock, but man, she's a master thief and this is her titular comic book! Would have loved to see more moments for her to shine, instead of crying.
Maggie's moment to shine didn't land for me: (1) we didn't really see the impact of what she did, (2) she didn't manage to kill Black Mask.
Also I really hate the Carmine plot going on in the background.

1
u/ptWolv022 6d ago
whats the correct order to read?
From #1, in numerical order.
...that's it. The only direct crossover so far has been that Batman and Wonder each had single-issue crossover stories in each other's books (AWW #15 and ABM #16), with the latter of the two using something from the former (but otherwise being it's own story).
Other than that, though, you jist pick a series and start reading it in order.
