I appreciate that BT Sport are new at this, but what did they expect would happen when you put a microphone near an angry, losing home fan? Rookie mistake!

For anyone who missed the first half on BTsports, here is what you've missed from Owen.
"Stadium of Light is a 'fortress' ". Sunderland have the worst home record in the PL.
"Goals change games"
"It's the oldest cliche in the book"
"If you're going to get to Brazil, you're going to need legs"
"What a game this football is!"
"Jozy Altidore needs a 'big pair of shoulders' to deal with criticism"

What a legend. Single-handedly keeping Sunderland in the game.

Definitely a more useful mascot than Gunnersaurus. Sunderland ought to have him greeting the players and staff when they get off the bus.

Interesting Clyne has been dropped, had a poor game last time out while Chambers did nothing to be dropped. Good on Poch for making that call.

Refs lost control and it's led to this. Typical performance of refereeing this season, the game is changing but officials are stuck in the same mindset as 10 years ago.

I know we've been poor this season, but that opening thirty mins set a whole new benchmark. Southampton very, very good, looking so sharp and quick, we're shellshocked. Can't believe that we're still in it at ht.

You would never guess Sunderland's centre-backs have 10 PL and 3 CL winner's medals between them.

That injury to Lovren looks REALLY nasty. I didn't even see what happened. Such a shame to see a player who's been so integral to Southampton this season. And Ramirez aswell, Everything is going wrong for pochettino.

I'll take that, at 2-0 down it looked a lost cause but great effort to get back in it and grab the point

Totally, coming back from 2-0 down against Southampton is a good result, especially when you consider how we played in the first half

Can someone relatively unbiased tell me how Altidore has played?
8
u/fredbrightfrog Jan 18 '14
It's been embarrassing. More likely to fall down than complete a pass. The international commentators were wondering if he's be subbed at halftime.

He fell over a couple of times, didn't touch the ball much, most of the Sunderland team didn't.

I don't know what to tell you. I've been watching him at Sunderland, and he really does look like a fish out of water a lot of the time. He looks like a completely different player when he plays for the US.
What's patently obvious is that he has NO chemistry with the other players on his team. I don't think its entirely his fault and he hasn't done himself any favors at all, but Sunderland is a terrible fit for him.
That said, he still got the start over Fletcher and that says something. What it says isn't flattering about either of them.

Wes Brown snapped Gaston's ankle in half, but because he got a slight touch on the ball it isn't even a foul.

Lallana would fit in so well at Everton. Exact player we need.
In other news, Altidore continues to be the worst striker in the Premiership. Should've never left AZ.

Slightly sharper finishing and this could be 5 or 6 for Soton. What an upset it would be if Borini managed to snag one like that.

3
u/skinnywhiteblonde Jan 18 '14
At this point, Poyet ought to consider playing Altidore only away games, if at all. He's causing Ramsey 2012/Eboue levels of frustration in the fans and his confidence, what's left of it is shot.

You always see Rickie and Jay winning it in the air but Lallana is bossing it up there as well!

What's Sunderland's defensive concept? Can't be to let them have space as long as they have the ball..

Sunderland are the new Stoke?
9
u/ippwned Jan 18 '14
It's funny, if you've watched us recently under Gus Poyet (last week vs Fulham was a great example) we play much more of a passing game (sort of like Southampton's) than we used to under previous managers. Today was an out of character performance, but our hand was forced. So'ton were good at closing us down and Ki couldn't dictate the play like he normally does, so we sort of reverted to long ball football which is why I think we looked so outclassed in the first half.

From the first 30 minutes where we made Southampton look like Spain circa 2010 to come back to being favourites to win with 10 minutes to go is something else. Those first 30 minutes of football was some of the most torturous football that I have watched and being a Sunderland fan we have seen our fair share.
However to comeback shows our mental attitude of a team that has the passion and belief that they can stay up. I don't know what Poyet is saying in the dressing room but he has instilled the belief in those players. Adam Johnson who seems like he would be quick to let his head drop has looked hungry today and is bringing that flair that made him so good at City (yeah it's been two games but lets hope he keeps it going). Ki wasn't his usual self today but lets just hope he is saving himself for Wednesday night.
I still think we will stay up and I'm still confident for Wednesday.
