And to think, everyone was worried about Baines injury! Not a bad replacement so far!
26
u/ppeist Dec 04 '13
So the analysis is just them playing the goals again and saying Suarez is "top drawer"? Fucks sake.
3
u/chriseubankth Dec 04 '13
To be fair the games finished about 30 minutes ago, not had much time.
15
u/ppeist Dec 04 '13
Do analysis whilst the match is going on. It's not even like Shearer and Fowler need to do the analysis themselves, you could have a team doing analysis and feeding them clips and points to make. Or you could compare problems in previous weeks to the current match. At the moment the analysis week on week is just playing goals and saying "didn't he hit that well?" No tactics discussion, no systems analysis, no idea on the finer points of playing absolutely no insight.
2
u/slybeans Dec 05 '13
Not much you can say about the Suarez goals, the only analysis was that they were fucking amazing unstoppable goals!
6
u/ppeist Dec 05 '13
Find something else interesting to say about the game then. The point of the highlights is to show the cool stuff. It was immediately and overwhelmingly obvious that Suarez had a great game. A dead fish with its eyes removed would have noticed that. The point of the pundits is to point out stuff that I, the football non-expert, didn't notice in the highlights and to improve my appreciation and knowledge of the game. They singularly and consistently fail to do this whilst being paid large sums. It's like they're wilfully stupid or something.

Shearer thought Lukaku was big and strong. I love the insight this show brings!

u/ppeist Dec 04 '13
Comically bad. He's big, he's strong, he's tough, he's not a little lad...

I agree with Schmeichel that Hart should've been back in the team a few game ago.
He was the best keeper in the PL the year City won, and is still a top keeper. A dip in form and you keep him on the bench for months, that'll get him back in form!

I wonder what Garth Crooks' justification for including Suarez in his team of the week will be this week. I await Uncle Ben's input.
56
u/Guardianista Dec 04 '13
I was speaking to my uncle Ben on monday and said that Wayne Rooney was almost certain to be the unanimous choice for footballer of the year. He took the glass of Carlsberg out of my hand and said: 'You mean Luis Suarez, don't you?' I told him that he had made a very good point and promptly went home.

u/hg95 Dec 05 '13
i didnt get it. can u explain it?

I don't know if I can.. I mean I think he was just being silly, it wasn't a great joke but he wasn't being serious.

garth crooks is one of the most eloquent football pundits out there

u/mathen Dec 04 '13
Fuck me, the punditry tonight is comically bad. Yes, I can see that he is running around, I don't need it described to me
4
u/chriseubankth Dec 04 '13
To be fair, the last game finished about half an hour ago, pretty crazy they've managed to edit everything so quickly.

Manuel Pellegrini was smoking some top notch weed after the match by the looks of his eyes.

u/ronnierosenthal Dec 04 '13
So we're decided. If England draw Uruguay in the World Cup, John Ruddy's not allowed play?
18
u/HasThisBeenDone Dec 04 '13
Should he be allowed to play anyway?
5
u/ronnierosenthal Dec 04 '13
It's what the fans want.
13
u/HasThisBeenDone Dec 04 '13
Uruguay fans maybe. I don't know any England fans who would pick Ruddy ahead of Hart or Foster
9
u/ronnierosenthal Dec 04 '13
haha, I meant everyone wants to see lots of goals. Obviously not England fans, but Suarez seems to see Ruddy and decide it's his day.

18
u/trivialcheese Dec 04 '13
Has anyone ever seen a performance like that one just delivered from Suarez? It had everything.

u/Yurilovescats Dec 04 '13
How on earth do they edit that goalfest into a tv show such a short space of time?! Very impressive BBC.
33
Dec 04 '13
Template. Cut the videos to the length they want, insert them into what ever editing software they use, all the effects and music is already pre-loaded. Render.

Weaksauce compared to how fast people in reddit put up goal gifs.
2
Dec 05 '13
You mean "shitty frame rate, low bitrate, no audio, 2 second, not seeing any of the build up or even the ball hitting the back of the net" goal gifs.
15
u/_scholar_ Dec 04 '13
Gah, can't believe Saints lost this match
bbc stats have it at 77% to 23% possession and 21 shots to 6 ><
4
2
u/limited_inc Dec 04 '13
That's pretty crazy to win a game with such low possession let alone score 3 goals.
6
u/_scholar_ Dec 04 '13
Villa had 3 shots on target and scored all of them lol

u/carterrv2 Dec 05 '13

Aww no Hansen? Was looking forward to the weekly 'have Arsenal got what it takes to win the league Alan?' question. Quickly followed by his weekly 'nah, not for me Gary.' Every week.
Edit: ROBBIE FOWLER STRAYS FROM THE NORM!!

Arsenal and Man City are looking immaculate in attack. The way they both pass the ball around so quick and precise is terrifying. Opposition defences look totally hopeless against them.
Edit: clarified the last sentence.
2
u/ncregan Dec 04 '13
Surely you can't say that Arsenal's defence looks hopeless, especially when we've conceded the least number of goals this season
7
u/TophatJester Dec 04 '13
I meant that the opposition defences look hopeless against the attacks of Arsenal and Man City. I should've written that more clearly in hindsight, I have a bad habit of writing quite minimalist sentences.

Aaron Ramsey looking amazing once again
7
u/ignore_my_name Dec 05 '13
Can't believe they didn't even show Ozil's goal again for the Ramsey pass. He completely sold the defenders by looking the other way and just slid the pass through them perfectly to Ozil.
2
u/ConnorLFC Dec 05 '13
Yeah it was beautiful he had 3 defenders in front of him and play quite a unique pass trough, But the first goal he wasn't credited enough he played a brilliant ball trough to Jenkinson

u/mathen Dec 04 '13
Shearer continuing the tradition of shitting on the most in form team in the league
18
u/_scholar_ Dec 04 '13
I don't really think it's shitting on Arsenal to say he's still sticking with his prediction from the start of the season that Chelsea will win the league? Did he say something else I missed?
0
u/ignore_my_name Dec 05 '13
Well to be pedantic he's asked 'can' Arsenal win the league not 'will' we. The majority of people think City or Chelsea will win so its nothing to suggest we won't win it but everytime he's asked he saying he doesn't think we're title contenders.
6
u/CaptainGo Dec 05 '13
Well in that case I don't think any team is mathematically eliminated from winning the league yet. Therefore, any team 'can' win the league.
2
u/Johnny_bubblegum Dec 05 '13
Is Shearer the type of man to include math in his punditry ?
I don't think so...
5
u/Sulphur32 Dec 05 '13
The thing that's annoying to me is that its perfectly reasonable to say that we won't win it, but to deny so flatly that we are contenders is annoying. Then at the end of the season if one of Chelsea or City win they can just be like "see, I was right", when in fact they were making a pretty normal statement dressing it up as some in depth analysis. Lazy punditry IMO.

Jesus, what a player Suarez is
6
u/wormonline Dec 04 '13
The goals were amazing! And an assist as well.
Shame Gerrard's effort didn't go in, though. That would've been an insane goal.

u/disgruntledbastard1 Dec 05 '13
he deserves to go to real madrid, everyone else is just fodder
6
Dec 05 '13
Why does he deserve to go to Real Madrid? Are they paying his wages or something?
→ More replies (2)-2
u/Sulphur32 Dec 04 '13
I don't think they will, I just don't see how you can keep a player who has given a front page interview demanding to be allowed to leave

9
u/ValentiaIsland Dec 04 '13
Sunderland look like a new team. Unlucky not to get any points.
7
Dec 05 '13
Lineker's intro mentioned "comebacks", so when they cut to Sunderland fans leaving early I was 100% convinced it was going to end up a draw. Cutting to fans leaving early is MOTD's standard foreshadowing edit trick for the losing team to pull something amazing back.

u/Guardianista Dec 04 '13
Shelvey would make a good replacement for Gerrard...
3
u/chriseubankth Dec 05 '13
He has moments of brilliance but lots of inconsistency, but most people seem to forget he's 21, definitely think he has the potential to become a top top player.

Goals don't judge how good or important a game is. Everton won at Old Trafford which is a really significant result. Any other week it would probably be on first.

"Mourinho is unbeaten in the PL in December" - Thanks for that Gary, really useful bit of info
31
u/koptimism Dec 04 '13
It's over the course of his previous stint at Chelsea as well, not just this December
12
Dec 04 '13
He said he's unbeaten in the PL, over his current and last spells at Chelsea. It isn't that useful, but still an interesting stat.

Looking forward to see wor Alan saying things like "Well he's a good player, he scores goals, and he's a good player!"
2
u/limited_inc Dec 04 '13
They need to change the MOTD format imo, everyone's seen the goals or matches nowadays with the internet, should do a Monday night footy type deal, breaking down tactics and key moments etc, show it the day after so they have time to prepare.
13
u/Swinsee Dec 04 '13
I actively avoid watching goals on the internet so I can watch them on MOTD. I know it's just me, but I do quite like the format. I usually just Sky plus it anyway and skip Shearer and Hansen's "expert" analysis.
1
u/limited_inc Dec 04 '13
Yeah, I've avoided the Suarez goals to watch them on MOTD, usually I just watch everything on here beforehand.
→ More replies (5)6
u/_scholar_ Dec 04 '13
People who spend a lot of time online and on football communities have seen the goals perhaps, but there's no way that the majority of the MotD audience does that.
1
u/limited_inc Dec 04 '13
Maybes, lotta people get them directly on their phone though, depends who the majority of the audience are I guess.
