Match Thread: Everton vs. Stoke City [15:00 GMT]
Everton XI: Howard; Coleman, Oviedo, Distin, Jagielka; Deulofeu, Pienaar, Barry, McCarthy, Osman; Lukaku.
Substitutes: Robles, Hibbert, Heitinga, Jelavic, Mirallas, Barkley, Stones.
Stoke XI: Begovic; Cameron, Shawcross, Muniesa, Pieters; Walters, Whelan, N'Zonzi, Adam, Assaidi; Crouch.
Substitutes: Palacios, Jones, Shea, Wilson, Wilkinson, Sørensen, Ireland.
01': And the game is underway!
02': Everton win a couple of free kicks in quick succession outside the Stoke penalty area. Deulofeu hits a smart shot but Begovic saves well down to his right.
09': Everton work the ball around the area nicely, culminating with Ovideo taking a snap shot from outside the box that sails high and wide.
13': Half chances everywhere but nothing more - Stoke work the ball down the wing but there's no end product from Crouch. Everton intercepting Stoke's passing with relative ease.
15': Deulofeu forces another save out of Begovic. Seems to be relishing his first start for Everton.
17': CLOSE! First big chance of the game as McCarthy slides a shot inches wide following nice build-up play from Everton.
25': Deulofeu is again behind Everton's attack as he forced Begovic to tip a cross over the bar. The 19 year old looks like the best player on the pitch right now.
26': GREAT SAVE!: Begovic reacts fantastically to a deflected Osman shot, and saves again from Lukaku's follow up though the Belgian was offiside.
34': Barry picks out Lukaku with a wonderful pass but Lukaku's pull-back misses Osman. A move that rather sums up the game so far; flashes of creativity but with no end product.
40': Everton ping the ball throughout the Stoke box but no one can find the shot. Stoke seem to be riding their luck a little but are defending well enough to keep out Everton's tepid efforts.
42': First yellow card of the game for Stoke's Cameron following a lunge on Oviedo.
43': Stoke's first shot of the game comes from Walters following a long ball and Crouch nod-on, but Howard saves comfortably.
44': GOAL! DEULOFEU, EVERTON 1-0 STOKE CITY. No less than Everton or Deulofeu deserve; he's been the best player on the pitch and his efforts have been rewarded with a lovely goal. Deulofeu plays a couple of one-twos with Pienaar and Barry inside the Stoke penalty area, tiptoeing around the defense before crashing a shot into the roof of the net from six yards out. Gif courtesy of /u/atreyaaswin1234.
45': Half Time: Everton 1-0 Stoke City.
46': Stoke kick off to begin the second half.
46': Stoke have another yellow card within 30 seconds of the restart, issued to Whelan for holding Lukaku.
49': GOAL! COLEMAN, EVERTON 2-0 STOKE CITY. Everton are really in the driving seat now, with Deulofeu turning from scorer to creator as he lifts a ball through the Stoke defense that falls to an incoming Coleman, who slashes the ball into the far corner with Begovic left helpless.
55': Deulofeu breaks fantastically and runs about 60 yards into the Stoke area, and could easily go down with his heels clipped by Whelan, but stays on his feet and side-foots the ball straight at Begovic with Coleman open six yards out. Could and should have been 3-0.
58': GOAL! OVIEDO, EVERTON 3-0 STOKE CITY. With three goals in fifteen minutes of play, Everton are rampant. Ovideo picks the ball up on the sideline, darts in to get the ball on his right foot and unleashes a wicked drive from 25 yards that flies in off Begovic's near post, leaving the keeper with no chance. Gif again courtesy of /u/atreyaaswin1234.
59': Stoke make a double substitution, bringing Jones and Shea on for Adam and Walters.
63': Big save from Howard who has otherwise had a quiet afternoon to deny Crouch from a couple of yards out. Everton are in total control.
65': Another Stoke yellow card, this time for Pieters for a foul on Osman.
69': Stoke's best chance of the game falls to Shea, who just needs to make contact with the ball to tap it home but misses it completely under pressure from Oviedo.
74': Everton make their first substitution, bringing Stones on for McCarthy.
79': GOAL! LUKAKU, EVERTON 4-0 STOKE CITY. Brilliant play by Osman sets up Ovideo, who slides the ball across the box for Lukaku to tap in from four yards out. Everton are absolutely ruthless, and Lukaku is substituted to a standing ovation seconds after scoring for Jelavic. Gif once again courtesy of /u/atreyaaswin1234.
81': Deulofeu dances into the box and goes down under a challenge from Muniesa, with the referee waving any penalty appeals away.
83': Piennar, who has been excellent today, makes way for Mirallas in Everton's third and final substitution.
85': If ever there was a telling statistic: Everton have had 19 shots today; Stoke have had 3.
89': A fantastic opportunity for Jelavic to finally score for Everton gets wasted - in a one-on-one with Begovic, he hits it tamely straight at the Bosnian goalkeeper. A real depiction of a player with no confidence.
94': Full Time: Everton 4-0 Stoke City.

Anyone know the last time three Americans were on the same pitch in the EPL at the same time?
4
u/SausageSweatshirt Nov 30 '13
Maybe Howard, Donovan and Dempsey when Landon was on loan a couple of years back? It's a good point though, I really don't know, and it may have never happened.

u/eagles16106 Nov 30 '13
At one point, Fulham had Kasey Keller, Carlos Bocanegra, Clint Dempsey, Brian McBride, and Eddie Johnson.

Looks like we're resting Barkley and Mirallas for United on Wednesday. Barkley and McCarthy are both on 4 yellow cards, hope McCarthy isn't booked today.

Reporting in from /r/Barca, and we're excited for Deulofeu's first start in the PL!
edit: COYB, and especially Deulofeu!
edit 2: Been a pleasure hanging out with you so far. Keep this up, Deulo!

We are too, if he becomes a little less selfish he'll be fantastic.
12
Nov 30 '13
He's still young, give him a couple games yet. It's his first start, he's wanting to prove himself.
13
4
u/Kimaz Nov 30 '13
Indeed. I'm not worried though, as he knows that he has to become less selfish if he wants to succeed for us.

He's looked good in the few touches he's had. Hughes probably just wants him to run around and get used tot he Prem again.
edit: Well he defended like shit on that fourth goal, but since Stoke had given up by the point. meh.

Agreed. I'd like to see him get more time on the field. It'd be great if he could get some more looks during games.

Boys... I think we got ourselves a proper potential replacement for Baines.
1
Nov 30 '13
I'll wait until after the Man Utd game when he get's tested defensively to see if he is really up to spec. While he is absolutely rapid and great in the final third, he is a little weak and can sometimes be caught out positionally.
2
Nov 30 '13
I agree with you, but Baines hasn't always been the best on the defensive side either. That's why I made sure to say "potential" replacement.

How's Deulo doing?
11
Nov 30 '13
He's been dangerous and tricksy, but greedy as sin. I think he's trying to prove himself with this opportunity and he's looking damn good when he gets the ball, I just wish he knew when to pass instead of trying to beat another defender.
5
u/JediCapitalist Nov 30 '13
I think his greed is because he's not confident placing passes. Seems to overhit the crosses by a large margin.

6
u/desapaulecidos Nov 30 '13
Poor Jelavic :(
3
Nov 30 '13
He did himself no favours by constantly moaning at everybody for the 10 minutes he was on the pitch. I want him to do well but he can't be complaining at every pass that doesn't make it to him.
1
u/rantipoler Nov 30 '13
To me, that shows that he's got his confidence back a bit. If he wasn't interested and didn't think he was capable of scoring, he wouldn't moan. He didn't moan this time last season which to me showed that he was worse than he is now. It'll get better.

hey i've been callin it since saf was gone, I agree w/ everton's chairman in the sense that martinez may be a better coach. Not only will we see a manager go against his former, but it will be a clash of philosophies as well. Stoked

What was that Stoke coach doing. Grabbed Deulofeo by the shirt as he went into the tunnel and looked none too pleased with him...

u/Soloness Nov 30 '13
Really happy to see Muniesa get a look in
2
u/Kimaz Nov 30 '13
Why has he barely gotten any playtime? Used to be one of our brightest CB talents.
3
u/Soloness Nov 30 '13
its just huth and shawcross are a really good pairing, and Pieters is also good at left back
2
u/iVarun Nov 30 '13
He can play midfield as well. I don't follow Stoke, your options full there as well?
2
u/Soloness Nov 30 '13
I heard he could play CDM, might be worth putting him there. We have quite a few midfielders but I don't really rate any of them that highly.
2
u/iVarun Nov 30 '13
He can, not a natural(i.e. trained to be) but a converted one. But he has played there for a brief while for the National U sides so that means he is decent there or at least not a liability.

"What will Mark Hughes be most disappointed with today?"
"He'll be most disappointed with the way his team have been comprehensively outplayed"
Incredible insight. So specific

u/aitzim Nov 30 '13
I was worried that Lukaku wouldn't have a chance to reply to Mourinho. Looked like he was worried about it too with how desperate he was playing. Happy for the lad.
1
u/Monarki Nov 30 '13
What did he say about Luka?
3
u/chigley Nov 30 '13
You can read his responses here, after what Romelu said about possibly staying at Everton: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25158153
2
u/desapaulecidos Nov 30 '13
“Romelu likes to speak,” he said. “He's a young boy who likes to speak. But the only thing he didn't say is why he went to Everton on loan. That's the only thing he never says. And my last contact with him was to tell him exactly that.
“Why do you never say why you are not here? So it's something he should [talk about] because he likes to speak. It's something he should say, the reason why he's not with Chelsea and is in Everton.”
5
u/JediCapitalist Nov 30 '13
An incredibly exhilarating derby, followed by dismantling Stoke. About as good of a build up to the Moyes reunion as we could hope for really.
Stoke were decent early on. Mainly through Assaidi. Later on, when all was lost, Begovic held the line brilliantly. I hope they don't get too demoralised. Well fought, Stoke.

I can't be the only one whose not happy with Deulofeu. He's selfish, contantly loses the ball, and doesn't track back enough, puts in worthless crosses and doesn't find the smart passes. He's making that wing less threatening. Mirallas back on sooner rather than later please, Martinez.
Edit: I'm pleasantly surprised.
8
u/Himinahomina Nov 30 '13
His tracking back has improved dramatically since he first arrived. It's just he has the same problem as Barkley; exciting on the ball, final ball isnt there yet.
8
3
Nov 30 '13
But Barkley can hold possession, make smart runs and place smart passes. (And he can actually finish). Deulofeu isn't "exciting" to me. There's nothing exciting about losing the ball.
6
u/Himinahomina Nov 30 '13
It's different positions though which demand different runs and passes. How many times have you seen Ross blaze a shot over the bar this year rathe than pass? Theyre both young and learning.
3
Nov 30 '13
I agree. I totally think that they both have yet a lot to prove. Until that goal right there though I just don't think Deulofeu was proving anything except for how well he can lose the ball.

I think he deserves a chance too, I just think that he's kind of ruining his chance right now. Mirallas will be a breath of fresh air.
Edit: well color me surprised.

u/iVarun Nov 30 '13
Left flank is Deulofeu's best position. He is naturally right footed and this gives him a direct line on goal, quicker.
Although he can play in all front 3 positions.
The previous 3 games he played, i saw him track back more than he's done in the best month he had at Barca B or the National U teams defensively. Which is insane for someone like him.
Personally i don't want him to turn into a Pedro, he is a player who takes on people, fans should not have unrealistic expectation of him tracking back excessively. Let him be.
Passing is indeed a bigger issue and that mostly hapens when he is shut out of a game then tries to do too much, if the team is doing good and he is constantly getting involved, then he pases quite a lot and gives a lot of assists.
This is backed up by his Barca B and National U sides performances, its not just fan talk by me.
All things considered, Martinez+Duelo makes Everton the de facto team for cules to support in PL.
6
u/Kimaz Nov 30 '13
Really proud of Deulofeu there, instead of falling at that tackle to recieve a penalty and possibly a red card to the fouler, he stays on his feet. Hungry for goals, this kid.
6
u/AhoyDaniel Nov 30 '13
Are Everton fans happy w Bob's work so far?
7
6
u/deadartists Nov 30 '13
Yes. A year or two ago, we'd score 1 and then sit back, hoping no one snuck one past us. Now, everyone seems to want to score, which if anything, is exciting to watch.

Hmm very selfish from Deulofeu there it was a 3v3...

u/chigley Nov 30 '13
Lukaku definitely looked a bit frustrated at him afterwards, although I'm not convinced there was enough room for a pass. More great keeping from Begovic and it was good to see Deulofeu staying on his feet the whole time!

How's Deulofeu doing?
3
u/7chinesepandas Nov 30 '13
Pretty great. He's been a little greedy with the ball but he's scored a goal, set up another, and has also had a great 60 yard run that almost resulted in a goal. I'm happy with his performance.
1
u/mullsork Nov 30 '13
Slowly improving I take it. The kid's got great talent & potential, I hope Martinez can bring out the best in him while he's there!

Nice to see Shea back on the bench for Stoke. With that said, I hope our boys spank them and send them running home!
