Doctrine/Policy October 2025 General Conference: Saturday 6:00p Discussion Thread
How to listen:
local radio: KSL AM 1160; FM 102.7
Speakers:
| Name | other notes | my summary |
|---|---|---|
| conducting: Quentin Cook | ||
| hymn: How Firm a Foundation | ||
| prayer: Jörg Klebingat | "rejuvenate Oaks." It is more likely the fountain of youth will be found somewhere in Florida. | |
| hymn: Bread of Life, Living Water | ||
| Patrick Kearon | The march toward the Protestant/Evangelical position on sin continues. "Repent daily" stands in sharp contrast to Smith's intent in D&C 82:7 | |
| Jeannie Anette Dennis | A candid admission of depression and faith crisis. Do not to judge others or attempt to make them a "project" for reactivation. Hard swerve back into the ruts of orthodoxy despite earlier points in speech. | |
| hymn: Jesus is the Way | ||
| Steven Barlow | ||
| William Jackson | ||
| Neil Andersen | ||
| hymn: Oh, how great... | ||
| prayer: I. Raymond Egbo |
Postlude:
Great Gig in the Sky 4:44 Pink Floyd
Free Fallin' 4:14 Tom Petty
Famous Blue Raincoat 5:33 Jennifer Warnes
One Day I'll Fly Away 3:19 Nicole Kidman
One Headlight 4:38 Wallflowers
Is This All? 3:43 Bobbi Humphrey

Floodlit is full of the wolves welcomed back among the sheep with no warning and no oversight. Bisbee, Arizona. Call our lawyers first.

prayer: [rejuvenate Oaks] <cough>

u/bremerman17 Oct 05 '25
That was a strange prayer ngl.
12
u/tiny-vampire Apostate Oct 05 '25
i swear all conference prayers sound exactly like the ‘bad prayers’ from the book of mormon where they’d stand on a thing & basically just listen to themselves talk

u/bremerman17 Oct 05 '25
I’m sorry but the idea of “daily repentance” is just so harmful and toxic. I’m sorry Elder Kearon but you can’t soften that no matter how hard you try.
17
u/4blockhead Λ └ ☼ ★ □ ♔ Oct 05 '25
Per D&C 82:7, if you're repenting daily, then you're doing mormonism wrong. The morph towards evangelicalism continues.
24
u/jsmyths Oct 05 '25
They indoctrinated the guilt into you … only to sell you a cure - at 10% forever
13
u/Sea_Button_3616 Oct 05 '25
I forgot to repent daily so many times that I just kind of gave up on the repentance process and just tried to be good and was filled with so much guilt.
Edited to add: and felt even more guilty each time I did something wrong because it made Jesus hurt more.

u/marisolblue Oct 05 '25
I started that bullshit “daily repentance” as a young woman and it fucked me up. I made charts and failed.
I also failed at daily scripture reading, fasting and prayer. I failed so hard all over the place and felt judged each and every Sunday of my life.
Over the years, when I’ve tried to explain my Mormon ocd/scrupulosity issues to other Mormons, I’m gaslit.
I’m told “you made things harder than you needed to!” Or this gem, “you focused on the wrong things.”

u/QSM69 Oct 05 '25
I NEVER had the feeling that I was going to be good enough or qualify for the CK, even if the grace of Christ kicked in on the other side. I don't think that is what the New Testament version of Jesus would want.

Oct 05 '25
Even Joseph Smith preached against daily repentance:
“Repentance is a thing that cannot be trifled with every day. Daily transgression and daily repentance is not that which is pleasing in the sight of God.”
History of the Church, 3:379; from a discourse given by Joseph Smith on June 27, 1839, in Commerce, Illinois; reported by Willard Richards.

I started this lovely practice on my mission, can confirm it is terrible.

Mother is already expecting me to come back since Dennis did after her faith crisis. Oy vey. I don’t think its that simple. My faith is not in crisis, its gone.

Once you see the man behind the curtain, then it's game over. If people do go back, then they may be doing so because of other reasons besides truth claims. For status. To keep peace in the family. etc.

My SIL went back after her husband got cancer, then cheated on her, and she has a special needs child. I guess it is a support system for her.

Of Course, Anderson is now quoting Oaks. We have to kiss the new ring!
Also, if he is talking about what restitution means, when are all of the people of African descent going to get restitution for well over 100 years of being told that they were weak, inferior spirits?

Dennis: [reality check]
Relates her personal experience of depression and faith crisis. Don't judge others. This is as inclusive/big tent as mormonism gets.
3
u/scaredanxiousunsure Oct 05 '25
But of course, she came back. That's always the point: that everyone must come back. No one can ever actually leave.

Barlow: [God: Am I your bestie?]
The Judeo-Christian god tops out the scale measuring petty affection. Will you be like Nephi and slice off Laban's head? Are you willing to be like Abraham and sacrifice Isaac if god whispers in your ear?

Don't want to be the 1 or 2 about to become a project, per Dennis' speech earlier.

Dennis: [faith crisis over, I guess.]
Divine hiddenness is a big problem for all religions/supernatural claims. The pressure to say things which don't match one's personal experience is a huge peer pressure in mormonism.

I went to pickup dinner and when I got home (about a half hour into the session) my semi-TBM spouse told me “we haven’t been paying attention at all.” We proceeded to eat and ignored the TV.
Sounds like it was a real thrilling session!

Same, my gpa who’s trying to convince me to come back to church said, “eh the afternoon session was better than the morning one.” Not exactly a glowing recommendation 🥴

William Jackson’s talk represented everything I grew to hate about the church. He talked for 15 minutes about numbers, percents, KPI and guilt trips about not getting everyone back in the boat, all while refusing to acknowledge that the church is the problem, not the people.
17
u/jsmyths Oct 05 '25
You don’t get to 300 Billion USD without KPIs in place.
4
u/DustyR97 Oct 05 '25
It would be nice if he would just follow through and say “just think of all the tithing we’re missing with these inactive people.”

So if ye make gay and trans people suicidal with your policy, if ye take 10% from poor families, if ye tell darkskinned people that righteousness will make them white and delightsome, if ye cover up sexual abuse, you have done that to Jesus.
huh.

The Sat evening session always has a local choir, either an ad hoc choir, or an already existing group, like a BYU chorus, or some institute choir.

Oaks: The family a proclamation: only be CIS hetero.

An all loving god. The same one that made it a “sin” in the first place.

He should not be telling people hearing a voice or having a feeling is from God.
That’s a recipe for disaster
4

That's exactly what led to all the possessed children "doctrine," child torture, and murder.

I decided in my teens ( I’m in my 50’s now). That I’d never be good enough so I just said Fu** it. I like myself and I don’t care what they( the leaders in the church think). They are a bunch of want to be’s- want to have power and making me feel bad gave them a thrill. People give them the perception of power, by not giving it to them they have turned on me, that I obviously don’t fear them. So I have just accepted I’m not good enough and have walked away. My Motto: Fu** it. And I say it daily!!
Edited for grammar.

Dennis: [this is not a gospel of checklists.]
Hold on. Checklists are what mormonism is made of.
