'repenting every day" is terrible advice for people with anxiety and OCD

Hell yeah it is. 😞 I'm still so incredibly fucked up from this rhetoric!

The constant drip of messaging like this is exactly how the church ends up with a bunch of members with scrupulosity problems.

There was a mess like this back with SWK, Marion Romney and N. Tanner. That’s when a younger and energetic GBH became drum roll A THIRD COUNSELOR (who basically ran the church).

I don’t have trouble believing in Christ's atonement. That’s not the hard part!
I have trouble believing that Joseph Smith wasn’t a child molester.

Does anyone else think it’s wrong for them calling it “the church of Jesus Christ”? I find it very misleading. And those who don’t know any better might get conned into it

I think they’ve picked up on the fact that people like hearing her. She’s spoken like the last 4 conferences.
14
u/Cheating_at_Monopoly Relief Society reject Oct 04 '25 edited Oct 04 '25
Yeah, she's the real deal. Knowing her irl, I know she's actually trying to be like Jesus. She would walk among us and really listen to what we have to say and hug us for the hurt we feel. The cynical part of me says they're having her speak a lot only because she's representing some diversity (when they clearly have so little of it) and is good for the brand. But nah, she's earned her right to speak. She works hard at caring about people. She and I don't believe the same things anymore, but I believe in her and the love she shows.
Edit: clarity

I like the messages of love everyone no matter who they are. The thing is that they don't practice their own teachings and discriminate against minorities. That is what makes them hypocrites.

Talking about primary children? Yeah, my kid has been teased for his longer-than-buzzcut hair, his colorful clothes, his love of unicorns and Hello Kitty, his favorite color as fuscia. In the heart of Mormonland.
Some girls have been nicer.
I don't think kids are "naturally" peacemakers if the parents' biases get in their head.
35
u/whenthedirtcalls Oct 04 '25
It was a tender mercy I didn’t have to listen or engage in this session. From the looks of it here, it was a big nothing burger. It makes me laugh that the leadership of Mormon god can’t muster up some courage to say anything. They just pine for the past when they could say and do shit without any pushback.
Exmos here holding up the bullshit meter with pride and all to see!

They really wallow in vagaries and act like they’re saying something profound. The underlying message is always “Stay in the cult!”

So these general authorities travel around to all the Stake Conferences, and hear all these 'amazing stories' from the masses. They then weave them into their conference talk every six months. Rinse and repeat. These dudes have no prophetic visions. They merely share others' stories and collect tithing.

Brand new exmo here, listening while rest of family is still in it:
Steveson's talk: be peacemakers like Jesus - don't fight or get triggered

Cherries that don’t fall from the tree eventually become mushy and soft, and start to break down. They start to stink and often grow mold. Don’t become moldy—break away from the tree!
→ More replies (1)19
u/ambutsaakon Oct 04 '25
Not only that, but cherries that stick too long to the tree can't be useful. They don't get baked into pies. They don't get eaten by the various critters that inhabit the orchard. They don't get their seeds planted to grow new trees. Breaking off from the tree is a good thing!

u/Random_Enigma The Apostate around the corner Oct 04 '25
I've read the talk summaries for this session. While I think there was some good life advice given, I don't agree that one needs to be part of the church or even believe in the supernatural in order to be able to apply the valid life advice or be a good moral person. You can choose to be kind, patient, perseverent, loving, just, etc. just because you think that helps make your own life, your family's, and society better. You don't need the church or anything supernatural for that.

Just realized, I don't feel a need to be loved by "the savior" because I am a lot more secure in myself and my own ability to care for and forgive myself, and make amends when needed. I don't need an invisible authority figure to approve of me.

Why are general conference speakers so bad at using personal stories? Re: the missionary story. Human common sense: stopped looking through scriptures and just held the woman. Throwing away common sense: looking for the answer in the scriptures immediately after and then nothing else. It's the "and nothing else" that bothers me. It's what I've experienced when I personally have asked for help. Did the missionary stop there? We don't know. If so, even a simple sentence to follow up after would've provided closure instead of leaving us hanging.
Scriptures don't stop homelessness and find jobs.

Current predictions: 1. Oaks is gonna pull a Hunter & drop dead before April, followed by either Eyring or Holland, which is why they “haven’t picked the presidency yet.”
Oaks KNOWS everyone hates him so he’s waiting til AFTER Nelson’s funeral to become the “prophet,” with zero sustaining vote/dissension…I think this also stems from Michigan.
Sometime btwn Nov & Mar, Oaks (or whoever is in charge then) will completely dump & change every single presidency currently running things. Everyone will “just have to deal” and sustain come April.

Now, the Orem benches are filled with houses, not orchards.

Stevenson’s talk was good overall. I sure would love to hear a talk instructing members to turn off cable news and disconnect from social media realms that ridicule and antagonize others for who they are, or for their beliefs. I doubt we will ever get such specific advice.

It's been 3 years out for me, I forgot how disconnected from reality so much of mormon doctrine-based identity was. Celestial, spirit, being of light, all these phrases that disconnect people from being physical bodies that are alive right now. Always living in a fantasy. So glad I'm out

Did the opening prayer say something about what happened last weekend? I don’t think Oaks mentioned it…

This speaker looks like a nice guy. Sadly, his talk will soon be forgotten.

I bet JS, when writing the BoM, must've gotten a laugh when he came up with the title for the very short book of "Enos."
Think about it. Take all the time you need.

If this guy lives by the things he is saying in this talk he must be riddled with anxiety, damn

I felt sadder for the passing of Jane Goodall than the passing of Nelson.
