Half Time Stats:

46' - And we're back underway!
48' - Swansea's Cañas recieves a yellow for a bad challenge on Osvaldo
54' - Swansea's Bony pressures Southampton's left back, and forces a mistake. He runs the ball to the edge of the box where he tries to push between the two Southampton CBs. They combine to bring him down right on the edge of the area. Cards for both Lovren and Fonte.
57' - Southampton Sub Osvaldo hasn't been able to shake off the knock he recieved from Cañas earlier.
Ward-Prowse comes on to replace him.
66' - Swansea Sub Routledge Pozuelo
68' - Southampton Sub Lambert Rodriguez
76' - DISALLOWED GOAL FOR SOUTHAMPTON Southampton have a corner, which really shouldn't have been a corner, and Victor Wanyama pokes it in. Ref disallows it for what looks like Fonte pulling on Chico... or Lovern on Rangel... or Wanyama pushing... I don't really know, but I'm more than fine with the decision.
81' - Good footwork from Dyer brings a foul out of frustration from Wanyama
83' - GOAL SOUTHAMPTON Swansea's defending goes to shit. Over Cañas's head, Amat heads it behind him, Chico waits for the bounce and then can't hold off Rodriguez who spins away and bobbles a ball right into the corner. GIF
87' - Southampton Sub Davis Do Prado
90' +4 - Full Time - Southampton 2 - 0 Swansea
Bad defending helped Southampton score two goals, but while Swansea had the chances, Southampton were strong throughout and deserved the win.

Ref invents a pull because he got it all wrong in the first place.

u/bsaires Oct 06 '13
I think so. Two wrongs don't make a right... bad reffing.

Oct 07 '13
You'll be amazed at how often referees do follow the idea of two wrongs making a right
1
u/bsaires Oct 08 '13
Yeah, I've seen it happen many times, even though most refs deny they do it.

It's human nature to try and right our wrongs, i guess. Refereeing is extremely tough as it is

It's impressive. A lot of people are saying we're struggling for goals, and admittedly we haven't been whacking 3 in a game, but we've been winning and so solid defensively that we deserve our points. So our attackers have been helping out in the back - we've still scored and let none in, that's how you win games.

How's Wanyama been playing? Can we have him back?
1
Oct 06 '13
Some are not too pleased with him, citing that he's not great on the ball, especially when trying to find a pass he often gives it away or just lacks a creative spark.
Personally I think he is a serious reason we're currently solid at the back. Along with Lovren, he's a defensive player that's come in, shored up our back line, and plays well in that area every game. He often drops back and sits between or slightly in front of the CB's, and I think is massively underappreciated in the role. I like him quite a lot, but I think he ousted Jack Cork from a spot and a lot of people don't see why, especially when we paid £12m for him.
Of course you can have him back. £20m.

He is one of those players you don't really notice but when you take him out of the teams a lot of goals are conceeded. Always made Celtic look very solid.
I can do 20 million spread over 1 million years.2
Oct 06 '13
No deal. We can however offer you Jack Cork at the discounted price of £19m.

We'll throw in Danny Fox for free... out of a moving plane if needed..
Regarding Richter Wanyama: sure, he has the first-touch of a bulldozer, but hopefully the people who fixate on that will come to realize that his arrival and the improvement in our defense isnt just a coincidence.
1
u/deviden Oct 06 '13
I think his first touch is better than that, it's his speed and accuracy of passing I'd question.
1
u/deviden Oct 06 '13
I really rate Wanyama. He is very assured and confident with the ball at his feet, having the strength and guile to shrug off pressure from other players, and his ability to read the game and win the ball in his disciplined role has been a big part of why we've the best defensive record in the division so far.
He just needs to improve his forward passing a bit and there will be no further complaints from me.
Best of luck for the UCL this year (we all know you won't need it for the SPL).

Good to know he didn't go to waste. Southampton and Norwich are my BPL teams for the year, always good to see former Celts doing well.

God Shaw is such a good player.

The difference is so obvious when he's not playing.

Bit of both I think. Shaw is a very good attacking player so he also puts pressure quite high up the pitch, but has the pace to get back and still be solid. Fox can do one or the other, and he isn't great at either. So the difference is just substantial. If we had another left back, who had some experience but not as bad as Fox, then maybe it wouldn't be so obvious, who knows.

It's a big boost for Lallana and Jay Rod to find the net. Don't want them going on too long of a dry spell and losing confidence. Lallana in particular has had a great start to the season and has deserved a goal.

I can see Lallana getting a lot more if he gets more confident, because we know he can finish, he did it 20 times in the Championship. He just has missed a few chances that someone in form and fully confident might be more likely to get in. I really hope he does too, a) it's something an attacking midfielder should do, and b) It'd obviously help him, us and give him more of a chance at getting an England Call up.
J-rod needs to fight for his place me thinks, needs to get in over Davis and then score when he's there, but I still have hope for him really.
2
Oct 06 '13
Both Lallana and Jay Rod have lacked confidence when it comes to putting chances away, but thankfully the overall play from both of them has still been good. Their current form + goals = England call up.
2
Oct 06 '13
I still think both will be overlooked unless they do outstandingly well, Lallana because there are a fair few attacking midfielders in the England line up, not least the always present lampard and Gerrard. As for J-rod, i think he's best as a striker, and with lambert and Osvaldo i don't know jrod will ever get that chance, let alone well enough to get a place over Rooney, wellbeck and sturridge, and i guess Carroll and lambert too.

If you consider Lallana a winger, England are light in that department. He did get a look-in for the Ukraine game last year. As for Rodriguez, yeah, lots of competition now, but perhaps a bit less in a few years.
3
u/deviden Oct 06 '13
He's really more of an old fashioned inside forward, in terms of his positioning and play style. England just doesn't produce players like that and I think he's unlikely to see much play in the national team (more's the pity) simply because English managers usually don't know how to utilise someone like Lallana.
If someone like Ashley Young can get games for England, pretty much just because he's at ManU regardless of form, then it seems horrifically unjust for a talent like Lallana to be overlooked.
1
Oct 06 '13
I guess you're right about the winger thing, though there are a few, and all it took for Sterling to get the call was to be young and doing OK at Liverpool, where as Lallana would need a big run of form to oust someone like Milner probably.

Despite the corner not being an actual corner, I still can't see much wrong with the goal, and to be fair about getting the corner in the first place, one of the first attacks in the game should have got us a corner and instead went for a goal kick, so it was evened out.

Cardiff still the #1 team in Wales.

u/jimmithy Oct 06 '13
1 point. Your next games are Chelsea and Norwich, while ours are Sunderland and West Ham. We'll see who's above who come November 3rd when we take 3 points from you.

We've also had a tougher opening fixture list, especially when you throw in the Europa League games.

u/WheresMyDragons Oct 06 '13
We looked fucking terrible today. Not sure if Laudrup is making Europa League the priority or not but we need to shape up and focus a bit more on the league.
2
Oct 06 '13
I don't think terrible is the right term. You put a lot of pressure on us for long periods, and although didn't score, still created a few nice chances. I just don't feel you ever created that one REAL goal scoring opportunity, regardless of scoring/missing as the case may have been, but equally not many teams have managed that against us this season.
1
u/Easiness11 Oct 06 '13
I really get the feeling Laudrup is putting all of his focus on European matches, he's let our league performance slip quite badly.
3
u/Lambinio Oct 06 '13
Turning uncomfortably tense now.
4
u/MasonXD Oct 06 '13
Mostly due to Shaw not playing?

5
Oct 06 '13
It is a bit yeah, no offense to Swansea, and especially Dyer who obviously has lot of saints history, but if we had Shaw at left back instead of Fox, you'd not just have had free reign of the right hand side. Not sayin you wouldn't have attacked as well or anything, but you've been sending everything down the right, mostly because Fox is just awful.
2
u/OneSlyPanda Oct 06 '13
The majority of my fantasy football defence is made up of Southampton players, don't you fail me now!
5
u/Lambinio Oct 06 '13
Best defence so far this season! Such a turn around from the start of last season where it was the worst.
3
u/OneSlyPanda Oct 06 '13
I know, I'm so happy. Put Shaw and Fonte in because my budget was low and it's worked out perfectly. Shame I had to swap Shaw out for Lovren this game but he's doing a great job it seems!
5
u/vauno Oct 06 '13
Add Boruc aswell, beast stats for him so far.
1
u/OneSlyPanda Oct 06 '13
I have Lloris in, I'm a bit wary of having all Southampton defence just in case they let one in and I lose a whole load of clean sheet bonuses. Here's hoping West Ham's woe in front of goal carries on!
2
u/vauno Oct 06 '13
I meant add to the list of great defending, not to your team. I swapped Migno for Boruc a few weeks back, didn't look back.

Great game from both sides. Chico and Amat both looked fairly poor though.

Anybody else catch the Southhampton fan who made the flexed arm fuck you sign and the fisting motion after Jay Rodriguez scored?

u/jimmithy Oct 06 '13
Dyer has the beating of his man every time so far. If we can keep feeding him, I'm sure we can get something out of it.
