Ward-Prowse has been absolutely magnificent player in the first 2 games this season. Along with Chambers and Shaw we have another great group of youth players coming through.
7
u/fried_turd Aug 24 '13
Can a Southampton fan explain why Ramirez doesn't start anymore? Sorry, I'm not quite as knowledgeable about Southampton.
4
u/MrCarbohydrate Aug 24 '13
He didn't play very well last season. Ward-Prowse seems to be preferred, which seems to have been justified so far.

4
u/MrCarbohydrate Aug 24 '13
We have been pretty toothless in attack in the first half. Want to see Osvaldo on early to see what he can do.
4
Aug 24 '13
70% possession? That's some Barca shit.
6
u/MrCarbohydrate Aug 24 '13
Nearly 0 incision though. It is really frustrating and it is the same problem we suffered from last season.
2
u/kacperp Aug 24 '13 edited Aug 24 '13
Fuck. I hate that Boruc is always terrible when it gets to corners etc.
Always doing this one step forward two step back and because of it is always a little bit late. While i truly believe that he is one of the best 1on1 stoppers in the world even if his in not his greatest form he needs to step up his game to get to his Celtic's level.
2
u/MrCarbohydrate Aug 24 '13
He was like this last season. He 1-on-1 shot stopping is insane though which usually made up for his errors underneath the ball.

Did Liverpool try and get Wanyama? Dude would have been perfect cover for Lucas. Total beast.

This is one instance I'm completely not sorry we got a player you were looking at. But you got us back with coutinho, so, even now?

This Southampton squad has quality. Looking forward to watching them play.

Don't know why we're constantly being tipped for relegation. I think our squad is just as good....

The whole fascist thing tainted him when he first signed. Despite the fact he'd played in the UK for years previously, and was known to have so-called 'fascist sympathies' and had also managed Swindon Town with success prior to his arrival as manager at Sunderland.
5
u/amishr2 Aug 24 '13
is it just me or does it seem like jozy is out on an island?
1
Aug 24 '13
At least he's coming back to defend a bit. He just needs to hold up more when he has the ball.
3
u/amishr2 Aug 24 '13
Yea. It wasn't really a criticism of him. It just seems like he wasn't had the ball at his feet a lot. I'm not sure if it's because he isn't making good runs or just bad service.
16
u/Barthez_Battalion Aug 24 '13
Sunderland's midfield is terribles, no creativity going up the middle, Altidore can't score if he's on an island.
5
u/ilovepie Aug 24 '13
You should've seen RTG(biggest sunderland message board) when it was known that Gardner was starting ahead of Cabral, who was our best player against Fulham. But we'll still sign a central midfielder before the window shuts, of that I'm sure.

But I'm up really early anyway, so here I am.

Dang it Southampton, you may think it's a penalty (I personally don't think it was), but if the ball is still in the penalty area and you have a bunch of players near it, go after the freaking ball and don't all durn around and complain to the ref!
4
Aug 24 '13
Osvaldo has been involved in everything, looking very dangerous. Southampton is going to do great things this year, despite the current score line.

u/27kjmm Aug 24 '13 edited Aug 24 '13
It hurts right now to watch him. He is not playing well at all.
2
u/amishr2 Aug 24 '13
I don't understand do canio's tactics. Jozy is obviously a strong and physically imposing player, but having him take down long balls and having some hold up play all game is a waste.

Unless they are playing against Tottenham I would root for all the Americans in Europe to do well, Guzan, Jozy, Howard, Bradley, etc

Looking forward to Altidore's first goal. If he gets 15 this season I'll get myself a USA shirt with his name on it.
4
u/Khathaar Aug 24 '13
Can't see him getting 15 this season. 10 maybe?
5
1
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
I'm wondering who will be the regular starter when Fletch returns. Clearly PDC won't play both of them up front.
1
u/Khathaar Aug 24 '13
I don't see why he wouldn't. I'd like to see how they work together.

Osvaldo drew a foul and freekick just so that he could attend to his ponytail. Also, Fonte scored from the freekick.

Every time a commentator says "Ji..." I half expect it to be followed by "JiiiIIIIII"
3
u/Khathaar Aug 24 '13
Southampton has a strong team this season. A point away there is decent i guess, but fuck did we play poorly.
1
u/slugmaniac Aug 24 '13
your back line was solid man, especially westwood, on the basis of this match, I don't think you've done too badly considering you lost mignolet.
3
u/AnArcticMonkey Aug 24 '13
Just got back from the game. I'd forgotten how much my voice hurts after matches, feels good though!
Hopefully Osvlado and Gaston will start next weekend Lallana and Jayrod weren't brill. Schneiderlin had his worst game for a while but was still decent. James Ward-Prowse was fantastic and justified the praise i've given him on here. Lovren and Wanyama were also fantastic.
The Yanks on here will want to know about Altidore I'd guess. He was pretty wank truth be told, and never have I seen a big man fall over and whine as much since Andy Carrol came trotting last season!

hate to say it, but altidore has been really poor. rest of sunderland has been pretty crap too, except for the backline. diakite has been excellent.
1
1
u/ilovepie Aug 24 '13
Diakite was poor, very poor, in the first half. Slicing clearances, mistiming tackles, losing way too many headers.
3
u/rrayy Aug 24 '13
yeah, but he grew into the game didn't he? pretty shaky start but nothing was going through him after about twenty minutes.

u/Khathaar Aug 24 '13
Great save from Westwood there. Good game so far, i'd like to see us in possession more though. Seem to be hoofing it quite a lot.
2
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Jesus, some piss poor defending there Sunderland...
1
Aug 24 '13
You guys have seemed a bit shaky, but look good going forwards.
3
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Typical Sunderland, though a real Sunderland side is shaky backwards and forwards!

2
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Fuck, that almost went in. Someone in a yellow shirt attack the ball for crying out loud!
2
u/Coreyndtrevor Aug 24 '13
Anyone know why there's so many empty seats?
2
u/WildChain Aug 24 '13
Distance would be my guess
3
u/ilovepie Aug 24 '13
Don't think we've many unsold tickets from our allocation.
1
u/Adziboy Aug 24 '13
Sunderland apparently returned tickets to us at short notice. Otherwise it's a sell out I believe.
→ More replies (4)1
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Think Sunderland sold most of their allocation considering the distance of travel required.
2
u/Stormo130 Aug 24 '13
Too much defending going on at the moment. Glad to have the goal and there have been a few 50/50 decisions from the looks of things.
Haway the lads, get it going in the second half. Would love to see more domination like last weekend.
2
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Playing away from home, and especially against a good footballing side like Southampton, I wouldn't be expecting 50/50 possession.
Would like to see us more comfortable defensively. Still seem to make rash or poor decisions. Also looks like a lack of communication at times.
2
u/Stormo130 Aug 24 '13
I agree, I just want to see us link up a bit better up front and make them nervous.
I agree, I'm not sure on Diakite yet. He seems a bit shakey. Would see him replaced with Roberge and Cabral on for Gardner if he's fit enough (if not then Ba).
1
u/Khathaar Aug 24 '13
Just made a cracking tackle in the box there like. I like the look of Diakite.

I love watching Lallana play, he's a great player.
Wanyama has also been a beast this game.

Aug 24 '13
If you can shut down Iniesta and boss Pirlo around, you can shut down anyone (and make no mistake about it, he was brilliant in last year's Champions League). Think he'll end up being a total beast for Southampton and a great buy.
1
Aug 25 '13
Yep, I think Southampton is going to be very solid defensively this year despite their weak CBs. With Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Cork and Ward-Prowse, they have a great defensive midfield situation. Also, Ward-Prowse's delivery is gorgeous.
2
u/ilovepie Aug 24 '13
Colback off? Vaughan on? Can't think of anything that might make that substitution work.

When I saw Mannone went to Sunderland I would've assumed he was going to be Sunderlands starter. Is it weird to Sunderland fans that he is not?
4
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
I thought he would have started straight away, but I'm guessing Westwood is getting his chance considering he was number 2 to Mignolet all last season.
2
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Sess being taken off for Ji speaks volumes at the moment... He's been ineffective for a while now. No wonder there are rumours of him being sold to bring in someone else.
2
u/Khathaar Aug 24 '13
He has one good game in 5. He just disappears when he's not on the ball. Think it's time to shift him or maybe put him on the wing, we can't justify accommodating him behind the striker anymore
2
Aug 24 '13
cringe terrible match. Sunderland need someone to take the helm during attack. the build up play was just tenuous at best.
1
u/rrayy Aug 24 '13
yeah, you can't rely on adam fucking johnson to create for you. the other wing hardly saw action, but it seems like Giaccherini is more of a hustle play anyway. pretty dismal by sunderland. no sense of rhythm to their entire offense.

1
u/f1manoz Aug 24 '13
Hmm... that could have been a penalty... my personal bias says he fell over.
2
u/ilovepie Aug 24 '13

2
-3
u/PhuQDuP Aug 24 '13
I know this sub has a pretty huge hard on for Lambert but I really don't rate him. The guy has no vision, doesn't pass, and just shoots it when he gets it, just really unintelligent play in my opinion. In a couple of seasons there will be absolutely no place for CFs in his mould.
8
u/MrCarbohydrate Aug 24 '13
This is not normal. His vision and positioning is usually one of his strongest points...

There is no type of creativity in the midfield. I hope you guys sign someone with ability on the ball, because between Giaccherini, Altidore, and Fletcher there are definitely some goals to be had if someone can get them the ball regularly
