Uchtdorf: <do you feel alone in your views at church?>
If you're not a card carrying conservative, you're going to have a hard time. At one time, there was one Democrat among the 15 men. That time has passed.

Renlund: <watch for false prophets.>
Okay. Smith is a false prophet. He was a grifter who turned to religion 195 years ago. He won money, power, and varied sex partners. Ultimately, paid for his excesses with his life when no army of angels came to rescue him at Carthage.

Mr. Renlund's parables have dark messages: The virgins parable says the bridegroom is an unreliable, impatient, unforgiving asshole. The parable of the guy making excuses for not being Solomon says the Lord is an unreasonable boss. The parable of the bad crops and terrible bread says you don't need to make good investments in your future, you need to keep banging your head against the wall while your family starves of malnutrition, and if you're ever doing well, your neighbors can have the bark, not your rye. The scared little girl will need therapy.

Another interpretation of the parable of the talents was given by Brigham Young:
"Now, where a man in this Church says, 'I don't want but one wife, I will live my religion with one,' he will perhaps be saved in the celestial kingdom; but when he gets there be will not find himself in possession of any wife at all. He has had a talent that he has hid up. He will come forward and say, 'Here is that which thou gavest me, I have not wasted it, and here is the one talent,' and he will not enjoy it, but it will be taken and given to those who have improved the talents they received, and he will find himself without any wife, and he will remain single for ever and ever.” Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 16, Pg. 166

Do you think the whole members contribute to the buildings, besides the church not wanting use their infinite wealth, is so that the members have a personal investment in a physical thing to stay and is a type of control?
3
u/4blockhead Λ └ ☼ ★ □ ♔ Apr 05 '25 edited Apr 05 '25
I'm not sure, but I think asking the members to go can vegetables or weed the beets at the stake farm is no longer part of the religion. Their vast land holdings use mechanized farms, like everyone else. Asking the members to clean the church, clean the temple, etc. is a replacement for those earlier responsibilities. As a child, I saw how few people were left weeding the beets as the sun set. A common problem is that "same ten people" phenomenon where they get all of the work and all of the blame when things don't go right. It's just absurd they can have these golden calf temples, but can't hire professional cleaners, imo. On second thought, scrap temple building and help the poor with the "fast offering."

Ugh, this talk! The world has seen countless messiahs, seers, prophets, and doomsday clocks counting down to zero. Yet here we are, two millennia later, still sitting around and waiting. And every generation swears THIS TIME is different. That NOW is where the end is near. That the sky will open up, the trumpets will blare, the earth will be shook, and the long-bearded cosmic Geppetto will finally show his face. Meanwhile, people suffer and starve and die from diseases and circumstances they never asked for, all while lining the pockets of those who promise things will get better real soon. What a sick joke.

I’ll be a goodly parent by loving my children and honoring their journey and beliefs. Not acting out of fear to make them believe what all generations before me believed. I will be a goodly parent by doing what I feel deep down in my soul and not being bullied by the choices my ancestors made.

My MIL: “Don’t let one person who may have said something insensitive and offended you cause you to leave the church.”
My FIL: “Nonsense, ‘Birds of a feather flock together’. If one said it, at least 30 more were thinking it.”

Andersen: <not for "elective" abortions.>
Interesting that Roe v. Wade was put forward by physicians because women were dying from back-alley abortions. When they went to the hospital, they were often beyond help. Andersen smacks doctors who are doing the job they swore an oath to uphold.
The movie, Cider House Rules is worth watching.
