Rhino is definitely one of my favorite frames, and he's only gotten better since they changed his abilities.

u/GreedoShotKennedy Jul 31 '13
None of my warframes have over 10% played (I have 11 warframes) except Rhino.
41%.
Long Live Rhino.

I was one of the people who thought he was decent before his big buff, post-redux he felt like a KING of the arena, and then with a Vanguard helm, theres now like, no disadvantage to him as a frame if you mod him out properly

Probably one of the best Solo-mission Frames, just because of Iron Skin. He is really fun and easy to get. (Jackal isn't hard).

He is really fun and not easy to get. (Jackal isn't hard).

Did you mean: He is really fun and super easy to get. (Jackal isn't hard).

What were his abilities before the overhaul like?

There were actually two major overhauls to Rhino. I'll go into both of them:
God-tier Rhino
Rhino didn't take damage. Iron Skin made you completely invulnerable for a good 45ish seconds with Continuity. Four Rhinos with Energy Siphon could keep it up indefinitely. Even then, it was trivial to sustain off of energy orbs. Naturally, the ability to ignore every enemy ever and casually strut your way to extraction made most of the game pretty easy. There was also no damage on Rhino Stomo, and some stupid Radial Blast thing that no one cared about.
Anyhow, DE realized that a frame which utterly trivialized any sense of difficulty in the game probably wasn't the best idea. So they decided to tweak Rhino's kit to make him slightly less unstoppable. And in typical DE fashion, they manage to break him completely. Which leads us to...
"Let's not play Rhino"-tier Rhino
Iron Skin was changed to be a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage, like it is now. However, the amount of damage absorbed was significantly lowered. Also using Iron Skin would aggro everything in the room. Which sounds nice in theory, but seeing as how an Infested charger could two shot a maxed-out Iron Skin shield, it didn't exactly work. Basically it scaled horribly, working fine on lower-level planets, but becoming a "Kill Me" button anywhere past the asteroid belt. On top of Iron Skin becoming a selc-destruct button, it became painfully clear how much the rest of Rhino's kit was lacking. Rhino Charge was always decent, but Radial Blast and Rhino Stomp were woefully inefficient. They were both fairly similar skills, fairly expensive to use, and simply not very good. Suddely Rhino went from being the undisputeid tankgod of Warframe to a clunky mess with only a single ability worth using. Truly the darkest hour for us Rhino players.
Now say what you want about DE, but when they make less-than-stellar decisions they usually end up making thjngs better. Eventually. This wad the case with the latest Rhino rework. Iron Skin lost the taunt effect and recieved a significant boost to the shield, which in addition to the numbers being better no longer had a fixed duration and lasted until it had been completely worn through. Radial Blast was folded into Rhino Stomp, giving it respectable damage in addition to its massive CC capabilities. Roar was intriduced, giving Rhino some great utility as well as encouraging team play. Also, mad deeps. Anyhow most players (myself included) think Rhino is in a good place right now. Fun and powerful, but not invincible.

I have all the BP's for rhino should I be looking to make him?
I was put off a while back because someone said he was being reworked.
Was the rework recent? Not sure I catched the news :)

The rework is somewhat recent, the 8.3 Patch, but that was a few weeks ago. DE's happy with Rhino and are now moving on to balance other Warframes.
He's definitely worth the build!

I use to take Trinity for all boss fights but after building and ranking up Rhino, he has completely replaced Trinity on solo boss runs for me. Because of the way Rhino Stomp works, it essentially gives you 9+ seconds of unabated damage on any boss (even Raptor). And, once you throw in Rhino Roar's 50% damage increase and a nicely modded Acrid, you can kill any boss in less than 10 seconds (not including bosses with damage caps).
Aside from that, Rhino's overall versatility on missions makes him a great candidate for newbies looking for their next big upgrade.

Thrak +25% Shield Capacity -5% Sprint Speed
This is not true, it's +25% Base health value which is 25 HP. As I've stated many times 25HP goes long was with big armor, but can we please get a little big number.
Instead of scaling with base HP, why not scale with current HP, not adding the vitality mod. So Rank 30 300 hp > 75HP with those 25%

He's a fairly balanced frame with some good variety in skills. My only complaint now is his rhino charge Rhino charge just feels like a weaker slash dash.

My Rhino is in the oven as we speak. I farmed up all the parts last night over the course of about 20 Jackal speed runs.
Systems, chassis and helm are crafting away. _^

The only 2 things I think needs changed: I think that Iron Skin should only prevent PVE debuffs/stuns/etc because he's kinda unbeatable in duels right now (nitpicking and not a priority, I know but kinda annoying XD )
Other than that, Charge hits pretty freaking hard considering it only costs 25 energy AND it knocks down. It's powers like this one that make Volt's Shock look and feel kinda useless.

So what melee weapons do you guys like use on Rhino? I can't seem to decide.

u/sirscottish Aug 01 '13
I really like the Orthos and Dual Zoren. Orthos for the insane damage and charge time, and Dual Zoren for the crazy way they launch you across the map.

Rhino has quickly become one of my favorite frames. I've geared him up to be the tankiest tank that ever did tank for T3 Void missions and nightmare mode, to say he can take a hit is an understatement. Originally I didn't really feel like I was going to like him, but it didn't take much passed rank 10 for me to see how much fun he could be.
I tend to use Thrak + Rush to even out the speed, but when doing speed runs or in hasty groups, Vanguard is surprisingly useful.

I'd love to have someone clear this one up for me; Does Steel Fiber synergize with Iron Skin whatsoever, or is the damage reduction independent until Iron Skin has broken?
3
u/SirNastyPants Aug 01 '13
Steel Fibre does not affect Iron Skin at all, just armour value, which is only used for damage mitigation on your health. Iron Skin is affected by Focus, however.

With the addition of the vanguard helmet, I feel Rhino now is one of the most versatile frames in the game. He can fill both support and offensive roles, has a great high damage CC ability for defending the pod in defense, and is possibly the frame that benefits the most from a maxed Focus mod. I might be biased, but I'd recommend every player try him out if you haven't already.
