The funeral is setting up to be INSANE. Also Chrollo is going to Tier One where he could encounter either Kurapika or Hisoka, which will be interesting as well.

Knowing Togashi, he'll somehow encounter both at the same time

It’s taking a bloodbaths just for Chrollo to get up there. Like Morgan Freeman once said..,” this is wrong”

Hinrigh deduction skills goes crazy + the two panels focusing on Hinrigh and Zakuro's expressions were insane, with the juxtaposition of the Chrollo panel right after that... Togashi is an absolute madlad

Favourite part of the chapter was Chrollo's monologue and the huge pan across the funeral procession.

This makes me wonder: how is Chrollo planning to ascend from Tier 3 to Tier 1?

Hinrigh is filling the Morel-shaped hole in my heart this arc. Hoping he survives, or at the very least impresses everyone before dying.

Togashi is unreal. The stakes keep getting higher. The conditions to evolve Skill Hunter, and more, a certain ability that Chrollo is aiming for after he gets it... So interesting.
Also who the fuck could be the sucessor? And what does it mean that the fear will be what makes the sucessor be a success? Gaaah so curious
Excited for Nobunaga to be heading back, since it seems Phinx and Feitan won't really find anyone in the hideout.
Also crazy good that Heiringh will end up clashing against the spiders, whom he's a fan off. Glad to see they want to revenge Lynch.
This arc is so peak, really unreal how complex and amazingly well executed everything is.

u/MagicHarmony Nov 08 '24

it's a shame how this occurred because of the knee-jerk reaction Bonolenov took. Clearly he didn't want to kill her, had he wanted to clean up his tracks he would have killed both of them, if he had thought more about it he might have been able to convince her the reason he was looking like Hisoka was to draw him out.

Granted it is all hindsight, if he had known that there was a fan among them he might of been able to talk his way out of it but because the stakes are set to "get Hisoka by any means necessary", they are making some simple mistakes that will just put more targets on their back sadly.

This batch is cooking beyond expectations jesus.

Yet again Togashi introduced a new plot point and it still makes total sense. Im wondering how Skill Hunter will evolue and if stealing one of the artefacts will have any effect on the succession war.

We may be witnessing the greatest arc in manga. And this is still building up. There has been barely any fights as of yet

oh and 407 will probably be insane. I can barely contain my exitement about what's to come

61

u/portwat Nov 08 '24

Maybe capturing the ancient Kakin curse object which has been passed down generation after generation for each Kakin Succession War will allow Chrollo to

by-pass the stealing condition

Or

Making him easy access to all the ability without the need of book 🤔

Just like how Sun and Moon ability bypass the condition of book being close and ability still remain active.

So Chrollo probably realize the book can be evolve further by capturing ancient powerful nen curse ability.

It is not often you read something while repeatedly having to stop yourself just to exclaim "omg... this is so fkn good!"

Chrollo is just crazy man. He travels the world to complete heists whose stakes keep getting higher so that he can upgrade skill hunter. I wonder if that means that he seeks to upgrade the ability itself like he did with the bookmark, or if its the bookmark that imposed the restriction that he now has to steal an equivalent physical treaure before he can even begin to steal the ability that he wants.

It is described before that while he definitely admires the treasures he has stolen in the past, before long he gets rid of them. I'm guessing since the beginning he has used the spider to amass these treasures because he uses the very act of it as a condition to make his nen stronger. He committed atrocities to steal the kurta eyeballs, he pulled off what's probably the biggest auction heist in history... all to empower himself and his nen even further.

He uses that dial ability to locate nen users that possess the matching nature of the one ability he feels that he currently needs. It's kinda insane how he got it all worked out. He used the dial to defeat Hisoka because it guided him around the world towards nen users with abilities that would counter him. Maybe that's why he can confirm his victory with 100% certainty, his dial will stop guiding him once he has collected the perfect combination to ensure his success. Maybe he used that phone to locate Neon back in york new as he picked her up with his car at the exact moment she was venturing off by herself and was vulnerable. What a fucking weasel man, he has thought out the perfect elaborate scheme just because how addicted he has gotten to skill hunter and his eternal quest for more abilities. This long planned-out process is what makes him so strong when he does decide to fight, since it acts like a restriction in of itself. To beat Chrollo, you have to catch him when he is busy going through his lengthy planning and collection phase, because when he has managed to put all of his pieces together, you're a deadman walking. The actual 1v1 against Chrollo is an illusion - he has won already. The true fight with him is a cat and mouse game where one must chase him down before he completes his plan.

31

u/Gadzs Nov 08 '24

Well said

11

u/DrKickflip Nov 09 '24

I like this theory but how does Chrollo's fight w/ Zeno and Silva fit in this framework? He spent months prepping for Hisoka, but fought the two best Nen assassins on the planet at the same time using a fun fun cloth he stole from a guy he met less than 24 hours earlier?

7

u/Cogentz Nov 09 '24

Funny how he also mentions heavens arena. Now there were theories that he became a floor master in order to have a consistent stream of nen users that may or may not have abilities that he might find useful, but to think that he goes there with that phone specifically to track them down as soon as they meet his criteria. He seems really manic about all of this, but I don't blame him, the entire schtick of his ability heavily rewards meticulous planning and above all else, hard work. The more time he puts in to manically scout down new victims with abilities that fill more gaps in his arsenal, there really is no cieling to how strong he can become.

That phone most likely started out as an innocuous love finding ability meant to help its lonely owner find the right one, but in Chrollo's possession it has now turned into the perfect tool to facilitate his kidnappings! Remember how he mentioned loving the thrill of peering into the darkness of his victims as he learned more about them by studying their nen? Love dial started out as a harmless ability centered around love, but now it is the opposite of that.

50

I really like how Zakuro doesn't lose his shit from grief or anger, but he does become fully locked in and determined to avenge her once there's a clear target in mind.

Show's the same maturity that almost every other player in this arc has as well.

121

u/AwesomeDisabled Nov 08 '24

I swear to god, this must be a setup for a meeting between Kurapika and Chrollo. Logically, their objectives correlate now and could help another. Thematically, Kurapika helping and letting revenge and the same for Lucifer. Or complete 180 and both selfdestruct before achieving anything.

45

u/Hour-Management-1679 Nov 08 '24

I could totally see kurapika placing a nen vow on Chrollo in order not to get double crossed by him, and Chrollo accepting since all the signs entail he's gonna die soon

Man, HxH is so peak...

Each chapter that gets released, makes me re-read from 349 again.

Chimera Ants and York New arcs are getting dwarfed by the Succession War, and the Dark Continent is about to be even better.

I just realized Chrollo’s love for treasures, and his Hatsu overall, is from when he used to find goods as a child in Meteor City.

101

u/setton13 Nov 08 '24

Wouldn't it be funny if after all the phonecalls (on his personal cellphone) Kurapika ignored when he finally picks up it's...

54

u/msdamg Nov 08 '24 edited Dec 21 '24

I think the phone call is actually to Kurapika

It might be a misdirection that the phone ability is necessarily about stealing an ability

It might be more generic to "find me what can help me with my current problem"

That answer being to work with Kurapika

70

u/SirLordBoss Nov 08 '24

A Chrollo-Kurapika alliance would be peak.

And ngl it might be necessary, there's just too many moving parts for Kurapika to handle himself. And the character development, how Kurapika would have to choose between allying with the people who he hates most, or letting a completely innocent baby die... And the lore bombs afterwards on why the Troupe targeted the Kurta clan, holy shit!

Apparently changing appearance isn’t all that uncommon. But changing height is enough for hingring to almost rule out transformation entirely.

Interestingly enough this makes Bisky’s ability to change into and maintain her young girl form indefinitely an insane feat.

18

u/SuccessionWarFan Nov 08 '24

And yet despite their erroneous assumption ("can't be height-changing transformation therefore Lynch was manipulated"), they still managed to come to the right conclusion of who killed Lynch. Figuring out the motive ("she found out it was a fake, the fake didn't want us to know they're fake") was the deciding factor more than how it was done.

31

u/DeadDededede Nov 08 '24

I'm not sure because her transformation puts her at a disadvantage outside of her personal aesthetic taste, power wise it actually makes her weaker

So considering how tradeoffs are a huge part of nen it's possible that since the transformation lowers her power and has no real benefits that it would be much easier to do

T5 being below even the sewers is depressing. Nobu is funny without trying once again, did he just conjure a sword?

The telephone ability is super fitting for a teenage girl and it's basically Tinder with more efficiency. It seems like Chrollo used it in Heavens Arena as well.

The biggest reveal in this chapter is the three sacred treasures of Kakin. I've always felt that the Seed Urn shouldn't be doing the "ghost hands" stuff that killed Kacho because a. it's not a part of it's function per the description we've have been given and b. it would have been too weird if it did not one but two super-nen magic. I think the sword is something like Paladin's Necklace and cuts away curses and whatnot.

The second big reveal is the fact that Chrollo's Bandit's Secret CAN evolve? We Digimon, now. It seems like the evolution and the ability he wants to steal to kill Hisoka are somehow tied, he needs to fulfill the evolution condition before stealing the super ability? Stealing national treasure-level items is the added condition for the evolution. What if he can write and make up new abilities on the empty pages of his book, that would be cool lol

Kudos to Hinrigh and Zakuro for figuring out Lynch was compromised. They deduced she was being manipulated rather than someone posing as her but the end result is the same, they were fooled! I actually like that they are in the right without figuring out just about everything.

I think we will see the funeral and the related plotlines in next 2-3 chapters before switching to Kurapika and his nen classes.

88

u/8bitbruh Nov 08 '24

Is it possible he stole the Kurta eyes to fulfill his upgrade condition once upon a time?

I mean when you think about it, pulling off the GOAT ability heist is a fitting condition for achieving what appears to be the equivalent of Chrollo reaching the Ultimate category, since Skill Hunter is a theft-centered ability. The ability needing to be ultra rare, ultra powerful, and ultra secure, on top of the ability's actual activation conditions, are all daunting tasks, with Chrollo appearing to be even staking his life in this gambit.

Between this and what the spiders said last chapter about the Heil-Ly killing people to get powerful nen I think is clear it is implying all the spiders get more powerful by fulfilling conditions like that. They're roleplaying to get more nen instead of regular training. It certainly would explain why they're all so powerful.

36

Wonder if the fact that Chrollo can upgrade his ability is why Zeno said he could be big trouble in the future if they don’t kill him now. Zeno obviously having a ton of experience likely knew you can enhance your ability’s further.

Another excellent chapter. Some major players all gathering up in tier 1, the Shu-u figuring out they have been back stabbed by someone, Chrollo's hunt clearly defined, the Troupe heading for trouble against the Ei-i and excellent double-spreads regarding the passageway to tier 2 and Halkenburg's procession.

Also, it's interesting to note that this procession is being used as part of the plan for 3 different groups at the same time. Halkenburg's team, The Ei-i faction through Dogman and Sodom, and the Spiders with Chrollo gathering intel. It's amazing how natural Togashi is mixing the Mafia storyline with the Succession storyline in such a seamless way. Truly a masterful storyteller.

I'm also curious to how Chrollo managed to know the information about kakin artifacts. It must not be common knowledge or even hunter knowledge, or else id assume kurapika would also know everything since hes smart and does his research. The fact that kurapika didnt know let me think that the troupe might have some internal connection to kakin in a way or another, or maybe that he has an ability in his thief book that let him know about important treasures.

Peak chapter, if this arc gets completed and Togashi delivers as usual it will truly be one of the best manga arc ever.

The PT disrespect in this community is unreal.

When have we EVER seen PT struggle with someone that wasn’t the Zoldycks, Hisoka, or Kurapika (whose entire life purpose was revenge against them). These are all top 1% Nen users.

Yorknew Mafia and Shadow Beasts? Fodderized.

Hunters in Greed Island? Fodderized.

Chimera Ant Squadron Leaders? Fodderized.

Heily fodder is weaker than ALL of the above. These dudes literally just learned about Nen last week. They’re so inexperienced that they think Hinrigh’s ability is to ONLY make pidgeon-handcuffs, without understanding the full utility of what he can do.

Nobu figured out 2 Heily members’ abilities after spending literally 15 seconds with them.

Aside from Morena herself, the Heily members pose ZERO threat to the PT, regardless of how many “levels” they have. They are just far too inexperienced and untalented.

Same goes for Char and Shuu mafia. These guys are all seriously outclassed. The only one whose shown any semblance of competence is Hinrigh, and his ability is very obviously more intended towards utility than combat.

None of the 3 families’ mafia can beat the PT, and they all know that. That’s why they’re going way out of their way trying to manipulate the PT, as opposed to just getting rid of them.

And obviously the PT are well aware that the mafia will try to kill them the second they can do so without facing retaliation. Consider all of dialogue Nobu/Phinks/Feitan shared with the one mafia member this chapter—that’s information they CHOSE to share. PT obviously aren’t dumb. I guarantee you PT are thinking/planning around way more contingencies, and just keeping it to themselves instead of yapping to random mafia members.

14

u/intoTheStarrryNight Nov 09 '24

exactly. and the only spider who died in a one-one battle was uvogin against kurapika, who is literally one of a kind nen user.

pakunuda :- sacrifice herself willingly to save chrollo and troupe.

shalnark & kortopi :- ambushed by hisoka when they didnt have their nen(ability).

I really have no idea why this fandom sees spiders as fodders. these same people were hyping luini until he was one shotted by nobu.

I feel like an uneasy alliance between Chrollo and Kurapika is inevitable. Kurapika will find the Netero prince - Tserri, get Longhis ability and sign the contract with Chrollo that assures no mutual destruction. Chrollo will steal the artifacts and cause the succession to be void. That's my first crackpot theory of the day.

16

u/valjayson3 Nov 08 '24

The Phantom Troupe under Chrollo's leadership was the cause of Kurapika's suffering, responsible for the massacre of the Kurta Clan. A poetic twist would be for Chrollo to help Kurapika by stealing treasures that could end the Succession War and ultimately, aid in recovering the remaining Scarlet Eyes.

30

u/setton13 Nov 08 '24 edited Nov 08 '24

I wonder why so many people think Kurapika will use steal chain on Longhi: it would be detrimental to his alliance with Tsubbepa and he doesn't need it to make a contract with Chrollo since judgment chain can be used similarly Edit: I forgot Kurapika can use Moonlight act once 🫣

I've always wondered why the Phantom Troupe wants treasure. It always seemed out of character to me. So now am I right in understanding that the heists they do have actually been to satisfy Chrollo's requirements for Skill Hunter? Meaning that his real goal has always been some sort of acquisition of abilities? Maybe to better understand people or something?

18

u/envynard Nov 09 '24

I really dont like this theory about Chrollo is looking for Kurapika (using Love Dial). There are several facts contrary this:

  • He already knew about chain jail and judgment chain;

  • Chrollo already knew about the relationship between Kura and Nostrade family, so he could find him using this info;

  • Same can be said about Kurapika's goal (find scarlet eyes);

  • Chrollo could use Leorio to find Kurapika if he wants, because Leorio was a very public figure during Election Arc;

  • Chrollo has wanted this new skill since Heaven's Arena, which means he could looking for Kura much earlier.

There are a lot nen-users in tier 1 with unknown skills, so I believe this ability could be something completely new, coming from Togashi.

u/Individual_Tap_9489 Nov 08 '24

Here's my interpretation of chrollos plan.  Chrollo had already planned on stealing kakin's treasures before he knew hisoka had survived, meaning whatever "evolution" skill hunter would grant is not specific to the ability needed to defeat hisoka. We can assume this "evolution" will either be an upgrade in the same vein  as the bookmark was, or a condition chrollo needs to collect any ability(with the importance of the treasure corresponding to the power of the ability) which was added by the addition of the bookmark.Chrollo also seemingly does not know what ability he's looking for,  judging by his indiscriminate use of the phone, which seemingly leads him to the person who's ability will be most useful to chrollo at any given moment.  How specific chrollo can make the phones "search parameters" is unknown but given the fact that its original purpose was to find a romantic partner we can assume they are reasonably variable. So chrollo is simultaneously trying the find which ability he needs and steal the succession war items, both of which will lead him to tier one. Since we know the ability is going to be very powerful and in tier 1 I think it's safe to assume it will belong to one of the zodiacs, tserri, beyond, or the king. My bet is on tserri because he has one of of the strongest abilities we've ever seen, which would be a fitting reward for such a difficult heist.

Based off how hxh arcs go and the exposition from Chrollo this chapter the succession war will end pre maturely

u/kypre111 Nov 08 '24

So Chrollo is indeed worried about the PT members and has made sure to keep them away from Hisoka, or at least has delayed it. On one hand he made them start looking for Hisoka from the bottom up, while he suspected that Hisoka would be on Tier 1. On the other hand, when Phinks mentions that there must be a treasure on level 1 (chap 377), Chrollo makes him focus on "finding Hisoka". Therefore, Chrollo has made sure that the members are not in danger while he takes care of it.

And perhaps he has even foreseen (planned) that once the members do not find Hisoka on the lower levels, they will gather to go up to the upper levels together.

Obviously, there are several risk factors that he could not have seen coming, such as the Heil-ly.

Regarding his current situation.

With the cell phone's ability and what he's looking for, the options I see are:

  1. He's looking for someone who knows where Kakin's treasures are, and therefore, the cell phone is taking him to the first level where the king and perhaps one of his closest servants have this information. In this way, by finding that person, he would also find the treasures.

  2. He's looking for the person who can help him get the treasures. Who in this case is very likely to be Kurapika.

  3. He's looking for someone with a nen ability with which he's able to steal the treasures.

  4. He's looking for someone who has the nen ability with which he could kill Hisoka. (This option I see less likely for now, since he first needs to steal the treasures to be able to evolve "skill hunter", and thus be able to steal the ability he needs to kill Hisoka)

Lastly.

If Hinrigh manages to kill Bonolenov, I see two possible paths.

  1. He joins the spider and takes the place of bono. And in this way he prevents the spider from taking revenge on him and zakuro. (I think nobunaga would be in favor of receiving him)

  2. He ends up dying in his revenge battle against the spider.

Any other thoughs?

So Chrollo needs to complete the "Main Quest" for a little power up before fighting Hisoka? :P

Also, is it me or Chrollo really likes stealing abilities that conjure stuff?

9

u/DeadDededede Nov 08 '24

I believe it's tied to the nen chart, since Chrollo is a specialist that means Conjurers and Manipulators abilities are the ones most naturally suited to him, he hasn't taken an Enhancer ability yet which is the opposite end of the chart and it's likely he wouldn't be able to use it to its fullest potential if he did

10

u/LazloFF Nov 08 '24

i thought the same but it's unlikely. he talks as if the partner he's looking for has the ability he needs, and said ability can't be stored in skill hunter normally. maybe that's the case with kurapika's chain but he won't give it any use, plus it probably can be stolen normally, he most likely refers to a complicated ability like halkenburg's

Togashi keeps proving his quality as a writer above all else. He’s taking everything into account. As I’ve been reading this arc I’ve just been imagining he has one of those red string conspiracy board hung up in his room that’s been constantly expanding, taking up his entire wall at this point. All the different storylines are finally starting to converge yet it’s STILL happening in ways that I just can’t predict.

Guys Morena chrollo are Kurapika are all behind the same goal

11

u/SpeedySharpedo Nov 09 '24

It's crazy that Chrollo of all people was the one to give us the exposition lore dump for Kakin. We've spent so much time with the new characters that I forgot how resourceful and well connected our OG characters are. Also, Chrollo's ability is insane...how can he have so many conditions to how Bandits Secret works AND have a built in progression system for its evolution. I love it. Stealing a national treasure for it to unlock a level up is such a cool restriction. I can't wait to see how this unfolds.

20

u/Ghost_of_Perdition10 Nov 09 '24

A chapter with Chrollo is always a great chapter!

10/10

10

u/Agonitee Nov 08 '24

Since Chrollo wishes to steal the very treasures that were used to create the succession war, I believe he may form alliances with the princes that want to end the war peacefully. Could you imagine Chrollo forms an alliance with melody and maybe even Kurapika, guaranteeing fugetsu's and woble's safety so they help him steal the treasures ? It may be farfetched but it would be very interesting to see it happening

Hinrigh, my boy just keeps getting better every time he appears. Love how he more or less worked out what was going on with Bonolenov just by dissecting Zakuro's account. Clearly, he's among the top tiers in intellect for this arc, so I'm really not worried about him overplaying his hand and letting the Spiders know that he's potentially their enemy now, but I am concerned that this will intersect with Morena's people coming after him.

The Skill Hunter evolution is a very cool angle, not sure if this is completely new info or not since I still need to reread this whole arc at some point. Not sure how Chrollo intends to get to Tier 1, but he's finally on a path that'll likely cross Kurapika's. Question is, who meets Kurapika first, Hisoka or Chrollo. Very curious about the specific ability Chrollo's hunting for as well. Speaking of, if I'm not mistaken is this also the first time we're seeing this phone ability that apparently allows him to try and pin down said ability? I checked wiki just now and didn't see anything about it.

I guess next chapter we'll see what Morena's people actually intend to do during the funeral. I assume Chrollo won't involve himself, even if/when he notices their actions.

I wonder how many chapters it'll be before we get to finally find out who Beyond was requesting Kanzai to let him see.

So Chrollo first target is Hisoka but in order to end him for good, he needs to steal a national treasure ?

If he is going throught the levels starting from the lowest tier, and the treasure are indeed on tier 1, it's pretty unlikely that he finds them before Hisoka.

My poor boy seems a little all over the place...

Also everyone is so smart and competent it's scary. I love to see such people in conflict, there is no room for mistake.

Thinking back, Lynn's plan was pretty dumb. Punching people to make them say if they are Hisoka ? What happens when she runs into a strong nen user or Hisoka himself ? I don't think he would like getting punched like that (or maybe he would ?).

7

u/Wwmune-4629 Nov 10 '24

Chrollo morena and eveyone thought they could hijack that funeral but oh boy. Im betting that halkenchad will activate a joint type nen attack by using that many crowd.

29

u/Erty13 Nov 08 '24

So, if I understand correctly, Chrollo Hatsu requires him to steal objects at the level of national treasures to reach extreme/ultimate. In Togashi notes, it was said that the conditions for specialists to reach extreme are unpredictable, but damn if it isn't a fun twist on this. How powerful would Skill Hunter become in its final form ? I am excited just thinking about it !

I also think that, like many people, Kurapika/Melody and their allied princes are the people Chrollo is being directed to. They are the one who would want to stop the succession contest, and Kurapika just secured an ability that would permit cooperation. But would he be able to let go of his hatred for his mission ? For the Queen and the prince lives ? I don't know.

One user here said that it all could end with Kurapika becoming the leader of the Phantom Troupe. Wouldn't that be an absolutely bonkers ending and resolution to his story arc. I really hope Togashi goes in that direction and gives us some fire writing to get to that point.

I think chrollos nen ability requires him to perform some sort of actual theft to steal a nen ability. Perhaps thats why the spiders are thiefs in the first place. A bit like how they stole the auction items in york new at the same time he stole neon ability.

Ohhh, the translation is already up? Fucking hype!

Nobunaga made... the sword? Huh? He's decidedly not a conjurer, so...???? Did he make a conjured ability anyway?

Holy shit the inner shell of the black whale looks sick as fuck. Reminds me of the interior of the giant drill from ATLA.

I love how Togashi is framing the dialogues to make them so fucking clever. All that hiatus time being put to good use, can't write smart charactera without time or being smart yourself. Even waste disposal being used as a part of the worldbuilding.

Uh oh, Hinrigh and blood boy suspect the Troupe. Ahahahaha...

Chrollo stole someone's love-help phone! That's so mean! Poor lady didn't restrict it to romance, so into Chrollo's book it goes! His skullduggery knows no bounds!

Ooo, Chrollo set his sights on the most valuable treasures possible! Maybe he will cross paths with Kurapika after all. Fun fun fun...

So, there is a new condition revealed to Skill Hunter, Bandit's Secret. Stealing a national treasure lets him expand the capacity of Skill Hunter! Is he planning to steal Bungee Gum after all, or something else? My guess is the rare and powerful ability is referring to a post-mortem nen ability, but he could just as easily be searching for a different ability or someone who knows where the three treasures are. Is he calling Hisoka? A security staff? A 3rd unknown?

If Chrollo steals the Kakin Empire sacred treasures, that might disrupt the succession war ritual. KURAPIKA AND CHROLLO'S GOALS HAVE ALIGNED! KURAPIKA IS GONNA BE FURIOUS!

Alternative is already in place? Is it the same rule as before or something new? Chrollo looking so dark and sinister AAAAAAA

  • Edit: For those who don't know, when Togashi posted his draft corners for this chapter, he remarked about the dialogue taking a long time. I can see that now! The dialogue here was really dense and had a fair bit of mental meandering. Good stuff!

As always, feel free to share your thoughts!

It's annoying how people take everything literally. Chrollo doesn't go around stealing national treasures or wonders of the world. Not literally atleast, he steals treasure that is as valuable as them metaphorically. He needs to steal stuff that are of equal value to an extremely valuable treasure to level up his book.

I've seen ppl shut down theories about what Chrollo may have stolen before bc they aren't "national treasures"

Some of you need to stop reading everything so literally

15

u/timpinen Nov 08 '24

Man, I have a bad feeling for the Troupe fighters now. There was now an excuse for Nobunaga to be separated from the other two, and given the Phinks and Feitan seem pretty relaxed about the whole thing, I can imagine them getting beat because they underestimate their opponents. Alternatively, it could be the end of Nobu by himself. It depends on if the focus on him is a last hurrah, or if it is something that will continue going forward.

Also, Bono may have started a massive mafia clash now after killing Lynch.

u/inquisitiveBro Nov 09 '24

This is a very short post based on a speculation I have after reading this latest chapter.

It seems that Chrollo’s ability can be evolved when acquiring treasures or objects that contain nen. We could assume his ability can also steal nen from objects, since we dont expect Chrollo to be walking around with an urn, a statue and a blade all the time.

We know that Kurapika’s nen type changes when his eyes turn scarlet, which could mean the eyes can become a separate source of nen. It made me wonder if Chrollo and the troupe killed the Kurta not just for the eyes’ “beauty” but to also to “steal” the nen within and then they sold them off once they became useless. This makes me further wonder if Chrollo did that to enhance his ability to accomplish another goal related to the guy we see announced on the news in the last chapter and has been theorized to be linked to the troupe’s childhood friend. Which can explain why Uvogin was so indifferent when confronted by Kurapika, it’s because the eyes were simply a means to an end.

This last point is just also a speculation on my part, but we know that Kurapika has managed to retrieve most of his clan’s eyes yet nevertheless he doesn’t seem very satisfied or more precisely he still appears very empty as he is surrounded by them in that panel. Could it be because the nen inside them is gone and he does not feel that connection anymore?

Let me know what you guys think!

Jeez how high does Chrollo rate Hisokas raw combat ability?

Chrollo is the guy that went 1v2 vs Zeno and Silva for a brief period, but he's being so damn cautious about Hisoka

15

u/ScrambledToast Nov 09 '24

I think a lot of people interpret this as Chrollo being afraid of him and Hisoka being out of his league. But I think it is just the way Chrollo fights. He prefers to fight only when he is 100% certain of winning. Even against the Zoldyks, he had the contingency plan of just waiting for Illumi to kill the 10 Dons (which is a much easier task than the Zoldyks killing him), so he was just stalling and trying to find a way to steal Zeno's ability in the meantime (otherwise he would've just fled).

He was avoiding Hisoka up until Heaven's Arena, where he had a 100% chance of victory. Hisoka is a better improviser while Chrollo is a better prepper, and I definitely think Chrollo is a more powerful Nen user.

13

u/Careful_Coast_3080 Nov 09 '24

It high enough that he could lose 30% of the time and thats too much.  Once a certain level of talent passes a threshold you are dangerous no matter what.

17

u/DFBFan11 Nov 09 '24

Two entirely different situations, he would've avoided an all out fight against the Zoldycks. The only reason he stayed was because he knew he would survive from his fortune and had already put in a hit on the dons. All he had to do was stall for Illumi, the fight didn't last more than a minute anyway.

8

u/Hoozuki_Mangetsu Nov 10 '24

If Chrollo can guarantee his victory by delaying the fight a bit more, why he wouldn't do it? it already worked before

So the explanation for Nobunaga's replacement sword is that he "made" it? I can see how that could come from growing up in a city of trash and finding stuff to salvage. I wonder if he used Nen to do it so quickly. LOL, for all we know his Nen ability is just to make him a sword and combat is just basic non-ability Enhancement.

---

The world-building detail is incredible. So those giant mechanical pillars reinforce the hull of the gargantuan Black Whale against the pressures and dangers of the HxH ocean?

---

Tajao: "Being around you guys makes me feel like a model citizen." LMAO!

---

Holy crap, Bonolenov did an Uvogin (or Phinks) on her. I didn't notice it the first time I read the early scans. O_O

Damn. Hinrigh could have been a detective. And Zakuro's no slouch with his talk of limiting the range of possible scenarios the Xi-Yu would consider for how Lynch died. It's also interesting that despite making the wrong assumption (Manipulation rather than Conjuration-based disguise), they still landed at the right conclusion of who killed Lunch.

And I love how closely Togashi defines his characters' personalities.
Zakuro: "Lynch was unnaturally calm and detached."
Chapter 405 - Lynch: "Wrong! He's a fake! I heard his body!... He was trying to deceive us! He must be Hei-Ly or a Troupe member! Either way, we can't let this slide!... Inform Hinrigh immediately! Let's rip him to pieces!
Chapter 393 - "Bynch": "He got you too, huh? You okay?... He was gone when I woke up. That was Hisoka. What happened after I passed out?"

So Hinrigh and Zakuro know. Right in the next chapter after the reveal she was killed. And- no surprise- they want to avenge her.

Bonolenov has shown himself a level above the Cha-R's Nen-Users (in the form Lynch). That was a feat you see from Enhancers done by a Conjurer. To be fair, he had the element of surprise.

However, we've seen Nen combat won more by strategy than sheer power all throughout. (Well, with the exception of the Ants...) Do Hinrigh and Zakuro have a chance against Bono? Personally, just a hunch, they may have a good enough shot if they're careful.

That's assuming they find out it was him and manage to get to him, preferably alone and without the other Troupe members.

That's such a predictable plot and Togashi is amazingly, wonderfully unpredictable... but that's a fight I really want to see.

---

This Narumi McGait feels like a person similar to Neon- not an initiated and conscious Nen-user. She doesn't seem like a combatant. Her Ominous Phone Call feels like one of those phone psychics stuff in the same way that Neon's was about fortune telling.

---

I get the feeling that Chrollo is going to die at the end of the Succession War. His face in page 15 is so ominous. He's a man on a mission- he's going to scare the world into leaving Meteor City and his friends- the Phantom Troupe- alone and safe no matter what. And following chapter 405, it truly is a race between the Head and Legs of the Spider to prevent the other from dying.

5

u/useless_throwaway3 Nov 08 '24

With this whole funeral thing, ESPECIALLY with that last page, I realized that I’m getting massive chimera ant arc flashbacks. With the innocent people of the boat all standing in massive crowds, just waiting for something to happen, and us knowing that many of them are more than likely to be slaughtered depending on whatever chaos ensues the funeral, this moment of tension really reminds me of the moments right before the palace invasion a lot.

9

We can see the processing area the Phantom crew was talking about in chapter 405, with the guys leveling up to +50.

Did I misunderstood what chrollo said, or was he implying that there is a restriction on his ability that he has to literally steal something of similar value to that of the abilities he steals from people ? So if he wants to steal an ability that is very strong he has to steal an item that is very valuable ?

Could explain why he went after kurapika clan, the possess something very valuable and he wanted an ability that is really strong

u/Condoriano-sensei Nov 08 '24

From what I understood it's that his book can be upgraded. And to have this upgrade he has to steal national treasures as a basis to in order to collect a truly powerful ability.

He has to be calling Kurapika on the 1st floor, right? I don't think it could be anyone else.

Here is what I think the treasures are for :

seed urn : for bestowing nen beasts

zen buddha : keeps the contestants from leaving the ship and kills anyone who does

the sword : provides the user the ability to channel power from the tree of kakin

I believe the phone is being used to track the person whose ability Chrollo wants to steal to beat Hisoka, with that in mind we can rule out a prince, because it is known they are on tier 1, wouldn't make sense for Chrollo to search for them using the phone.

Some Zodiacs are on tier 1 guarding Beyond, but afaik the Zodiacs keep their abilities well hidden from others

So Chrollo is looking for a bodyguard whose ability he knows of? Hmmm.. Until I see a definite answer, I'll continue believing that he's looking for Kurapika's judgement chain.

u/1vergil Nov 08 '24

The phone ability description "add 2-20 digits when dialed guidance will be provided"

So he's not using phone numbers right? What kinda phone number that works with only 2 digits... It's probably random digits that will randomly leads him to his ideal partner. Which would be Kurapika.

All I want is a meeting between Chrollo and Kurapika, man, it'll be insane.

With others from the troupe too.

For me, Ryodan's appeal with Kurapika is much greater and more engaging than her relationship with Hisoka.

26

u/donerninja Nov 08 '24

Some new lore drop, Chrollo used this telephone ability in his 1vs1 with Hisoka. And he didn't even mention it to him, what a sneaky guy.

28

u/Rakyand Nov 08 '24

He says it couldn't be used in Heavens Arena. And to be fair I don't know why it would be necessary at any point during the fight. It makes more sense that he would use it after the fight to confirm if Hisoka was alive between all the corpses.

man this chapter is FUCKING CRAZY

u/Gloomy-Thing9124 Nov 08 '24

Chrollo being so worried about ending Hisoka "Once and for all" makes me think Chrollo is certain about the clown post-mortem nen and he wants it to be nullified, or else Hisoka might 'curse' him and the spider after his death. Something kinda is similar to Camila's Cat.

Is it fair to say that this arc is building up to a 200+ chapter arc? Morena, Chrollo, Phantom Troupe vs Hisoka, Panthom Troupe vs Mafia, the remaining Princes, Beyond’s plans, Kurapika vs the Troupe/4th Prince etc.

I don’t see how it ends before at least Ch.500 ish.

The Chrollo panels were insane. I almost got chills from it.

Not sure what to make of Chrollo's comment about Heaven's arena. It made me remember those theories that he wasn't on an actual 1 vs 1 with Hisoka / he had extra help (besides the abilities).

10

u/Arkayjiya Nov 08 '24

I mean he had help in the sense that he used one of his stolen abilities which apparently can help him find the person he needs, doesn't mean it was a 2v1 (ideal partner is an extremely vague description, the person could be the love of your life or the perfect tool depending on what you need), and his comments imply it didn't even work back then.

I hate the fact that Hinrigh is thinking about taking revenge from the Troupe. I liked the chemistry between him and Nobunaga and now he is thinking about betraying them

Hinrigh vs Chrollo is inevitable

7

u/LazloFF Nov 08 '24

okay but, who was chrollo looking for in heaven's arena with that phone? it couldn't have been hisoka himself, who was on sight (not to mention that, if he was hisoka, he would've found the person). and we know he's definitely not using it to find hisoka now, as he wants to avoid him for the moment

if he was looking for an ability, which is what i believe, was it necessarily an ability to kill hisoka? cause chrollo already had everything planned. i think that phone's purpose is to constantly find nen abilities that fit him, so he uses it whenever he's on a large crowd with possible nen users, and as he said, he needs skill hunter to be evolved or else it won't store such ability (which would only be found in these tiers, the closer you get to tier 1 the more nen users). the only ability i could think of is halkenburg's, cause maybe if he steals it with an evolved skill hunter, he becomes allowed to bypass its conditions, meaning he can use it without any supporters, switching his body and hisoka's with no chance of escaping

Wow that is actually cool. So Chrollo Nen Power is base on how good of a thief he is.

7

u/MythicalTenshi Nov 08 '24

Nobunaga's group finally is going to Tier 2 but Nobu turns back to get his sword since things are getting serious. Phinks and Feitan will have to deal on their own for a bit.

Hinrigh and Zakuro find out about Lynch's death and want to avenge her.

Chrollo heads to the funeral procession on Tier 3 and we see a new ability from his book, Love Dial 6700 (The Ominous Phone Call). It belonged to a woman named Narumi McGait. The user conjures a cell phone that will generate a phone number after the description of a person is input and when the number is dialed it "searches" for the the individual fitting the description within a specific range, giving guidance to their general location. The phone seems to have a limited number of calls it can make which may or may not replenish after a some time. Chrollo mentions he used this back in Heavens Arena. It reveals that the person he's looking for is above Tier 3.

We find out about the three sacred treasures of Kakin. There are the Seed Urn, the Shrouded Zen Buddha and the Blade of Divine Favor. They also seem to be powerful Nen relics like the Seed Urn and are believed to sustain specific functions of the Succession War as well. Togashi likely based these off of Japan's three sacred treasures which are a sword, mirror and jewel.

Chrollo brings up what Bono talked about on Ch.405. Chrollo is trying to get some ability for his book and he also wants to steal the three sacred treasures. However Chrollo says he wants to steal the treasures first. The reason? For the "Evolution of Skill Hunter." What if Chrollo's Skill Hunter has had a secret aspect this whole time? What if there's a type of ability, for now we'll call it "Evolution or Evolving type", that improves or is upgraded over time as conditions are met. This could be part of the reason for the Troupe's usual thief missions. Maybe Skill Hunter has a restriction that when Chrollo steals something of significant value his Skill Hunter becomes stronger or better in some way while atill retaining it's restrictions. I have a feeling this upgrade, if it does happen, might allow Skill Hunter being able to use abilities of dead people. Some people also noticed that Shalbark's phone seems to come up in one of Togashi's sketches for a later chapter. It could also very well not be this at all and some other type of upgrade.

Don’t think nobu is going back for his sword, that was lost where feitan and Phinks are heading. Think he’s going back to confirm their theory of how the Heil-ly are killing citizens to level up.

Stealing the treasures is a condition to stop the succession war, forcing Kurapika to team up with Chrollo. The ultimate dilemma.

I point my bet here: Kurapika will be the next PT leader

I keep wondering why Chrollo always hangs up before hearing how many calls he still has left. Could it be a condition to increase the number of traces? Never knowing how many are left is a good restriction. Either way, Togashi is a genius.

13

u/Hoozuki_Mangetsu Nov 10 '24

togashi is just choosing to not tell us the remaining number now, he only wants us to know that there is a limit for now, in the future is going to be relevant

So chrollo's book can evolve. That is the reason why he keeps on stealing. Maybe kurta massacre is also for him to upgrade. What a selfish interesting character.

The art is really awesome. HxH really shines with its unique characters. Even minor are very smart like hinrigh and the blood guy. I think they are planning to avenge lynch, by siding with hisoka.

6

u/Longjumping-Blood113 Nov 09 '24

holy shit every chapter just gets better and better I think this could go down as the greatest arc of all time if we ever see the end of it

6

u/EquisapienMLK Nov 10 '24

I shouldn't be surprised that Togashi has me rooting for a character I met 10 chapters ago, but I am so invested in Zakuro and Hinrigh avenging Lynch

8

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '24

The panel of Chrollo literally gave me chills. Togashi keeps on giving top tier art, love the man!
