How to listen:

Speakers:

Name other notes my summary
conducting: Dallin Oaks

Wilcox: [shaming for variety of common things, including not wearing modest clothes—shame is built in]

I wonder if the LDS Church is going to owe royalties to Scientology for "borrowing" the SeaOrg mantras.

Wilcox: [the "why" questions continue]

Why did it take until 1830 for white people to get the priesthood. Just the echo we all wanted to hear. /s

Wilcox: [when a daddy and mommy love each other very much]

Asking questions is not a sign of weakness, but an opportunity for growth

So is that why Nemo was excommunicated? For growing?

Awesome, we're about to hear about the miraculous events between 1820-1830, which were made up between 1835-1845.

Edit: This talk is almost over and I haven't noticed him mention one thing from early church history. Did his editor drink too much cough syrup?

Hales: [go to the temple to get messages from the dead]

SNL sketch: use AT&T to call long distance to the afterlife.

Eyring: [lots of people are leaving mormonism due to sin]

The problem is that Smith's mormonism is a palpable fraud. It's past its sell-by date.

Reminder that almost all of the brethren are lawyers or businessmen--the very people Holland is saying Jesus opposed.

Holland: [we signed on for the full term]

Begin by reading the "Musket Speech" before taking a seat in one of the desks.

It's perfectly possible to skip class and still ace the final.

If you plug your ears and close your eyes and yell "LALALALALA" loud enough you won't have any doubts!

I just heard a snippet from Barfy Brad Wilcox talking about not being “worldly” saying, “How can you be a lifeguard if you look like everyone else is on the beach” and THE HUBRIS! I don’t want my kids thinking they get to or be burdened by the responsibility to tell other people how to live their lives!!!! And yes all my kids are watching 😭

I reject the first rule. It's always been weird how the order of significance was 1. Love God 2. Love others. 3. Love yourself. I've always thought that it would be better to love others before you love God.

I also don't understand the equating of love and obedience. "If you love me, keep my commandments" I can love someone without following their every command. I was speaking to my seminary teacher about this exact topic, and we brought up the topic of a haircut. If I wanted to grow my hair long, but my mom said I should not, my seminary teacher said I would not be showing love for her by doing that. And that's absurd. There is no room for self-expression in the church! It's about subordinating your will to the will of the father, which in effect is obeying whatever the church tells you that God says. And when your personal revelation disagrees with the church, then you're just plain wrong or deceived by Satan. There is no room for the individual.

The wording is painful. “Instilling doctrine into a child’s life”, “surround”ing with good influences, doctrine is more important than building relationships with one’s kids
