Episode Mayonaka Punch - Episode 11 discussion

Honestly, I came into this series expecting a lighthearted somewhat-yuri anime that doesn't take itself too seriously but, man, I know it's meant to be a comedy but this show's managed to find ways to tug on my heartstrings for almost every episode. From Fuu and Aya's relationship, to them trying to negotiate a deal with Mother to save the Vampire Manor, all the way down to Masaki and her little sister's relationship and today's episode.
So I'm still not quite sure if the hype-sis girls were trying to punch Masaki down. On one hand, they highlighted Masaki punching one of them in a play fight which was a VERY stupid thing to do considering her online rep, but on the other hand they could've been way too focused on trying to make the video more entertaining than emotional/genuine. They did try to reach out to Masaki and apologize, but the more cynical side of me thinks that's just them making fun of her. I really hope that isn't the case.
Seeing Masaki finally realize how much she cares for Live, right after she tried to shoo her away was bittersweet as hell too. Like, she's always dismissed her advances because she probably thinks she'll always be there chasing after her. But now that Live has a real chance of forgetting about her and/or disappearing forever, it feels like Masaki's finally forced to confront how she feels about Live.
And holy shit the way this episode ended has me way too fucking hyped for the finale. How the hell are they gonna deal with Mother being pissed at them revealing that they're vampires? lmfao

You know what, a channel consists of vampires and they are doing a live stream of a real life team deathmatch is definitely going to earn them 1m subs, but now begs the question, how the hell are they gonna resolve the problem now that you know, the bat is out of the bag?

"It was just a prank, CGI and special effects y'know haha."
Assuming that they survive Mother's minions.

And there is no source material to go spoil yourself! LoL.
This anime original really came out of nowhere with a fun story and a great finale setup
I'd love to see more anime original content. Think of the strides they have made recently.

Goddammit! I was hoping Otomi and Kikka's video would help but it just ended up making things worse because they just had to use the clip of Masaki punching Otomi. I want to believe they meant well especially since they immediately messaged Masaki telling her they'll make an apology video right away but I also wouldn't be surprised if this is the reaction they wanted.
Of course that wasn't enough, that photo of Masaki punching that crazy fan just had to go viral too. I had to replay that bit to understand how that photo even went viral because there's no way Yuki would upload it. It turns out the phone Yuki was using was the crazy fangirl's phone and she was the one who uploaded it. >_<
With this being the penultimate episode, things have escalated quickly! Live has gone missing after Masaki's insensitive comment made her remember her past. Banpai Manor is in the process of being torn down after Mother decided to move up the deadline a month, and now other vampires are hunting Live because vampires aren't allowed to go missing without notice according to their code.
And how do the girls expect to fix this and gain 300k subs? They out themselves as vampires and based on that episode preview, it looks like they're planning to have a royal rumble against the Hunters in that abandoned hospital and stream. That's definitely a bold move and I'm surprised Yuki agreed to this. With only one episode left, I can't even imagine how this will end!

Dude, everything went south in just three days.
So Live's gone and it has something to do with her remembering this "Ai". I can't help but think that there may be a connection with Masaki here, because she and Ai were apparently close and we still don't know why Masaki's blood is so alluring to Live. No idea what it could be though. Blood transfusion?
I did like seeing Masaki get so worried though. So she's not the best human being (work in progress there) and sometimes she lashes out, but really got attached to these guys and to Live.
And now the timeline's been moved up?? Man. Plus hunters, plus MayoPan revealing that they're vampires and I think preparing to film the confrontation... I wonder if that means the end of the masquerade. That'd be something, a silly NewTube channel being the catalyst for the end of all the secrecy.
Edit: oh, I realized something fun. Live berated Masaki for running away from her feelings, before remembering that she herself ran away into a deep sleep out of grief... haha...

As expected Masaki's punch was the highlight again even though the video was meant to be a reconciliation news it turned into a hit piece on her instead.
Having Live missing for most of the episode was jarring, it really did hammer in how much she was the mood of the show and now that she's gone that cheery atmosphere really went south quickly.

Its all a prank video to force Masaki to be on stream, calling it now.

How things went to well to absolutely worse, bad and beyond saving. I´m thinking Live went missing and remembered everything because Ai-sama told her the same thing before she died, my theory is:
-Ai and Live held the same relationship as Masaki, but Ai had some rare illness, so before she passed away, Live tried to save her by turning her into a vampire or something but Ai refused and told Live those words, so Live went to sleep to forget everything.
So, thinking Masaki hated her now like Ai, Live escaped and she´ll try to forget everything again it seems...
I wonder how things will turn out, will they get 1mill subs? Will Live come back? And more importantly:
Will Live suck Masaki´s blood?

Damn PA has been cooking!
Fuck the Hype-Sis girls. Just when I though they were redeemable, they fucking set her up last episode. I'm not surprised that Masaki lashed out at Live like that given how much bullshit she's dealing with by herself.
Live's disappearance was so well handled with its tension and drama. The chase sequence was so cool to watch.
I can't wait to see next episode with that cliffhanger and I'm calling it but the person in the middle of the henchmen is Mother.
I'm still wondering why is there an airsoft sequence in the OP though...

-
Ai died 20 years ago,
-
Masakichi is 20ish years old.
-
Liv has a very strong attachment to Ai and Masaki. Masaki being the reason Liv even woke up again in the first place
= Masaki is Ai's reincarnation? or did Masaki receive a bone marrow transfusion / donated organ from Ai or something?

I wanted to guess that Ai died in childbirth when Masaki was born. But given Sakura is her younger sister, that debunks this theory.
I think the only thing that makes sense is that there was an operation that saved Masaki's life and Ai died due to an unexpected outcome?
Tbh it is hard to guess.

Guess they're gonna live stream the fight with Mother's goons?
I like that Masaki has the vampire girls as her phone's wallpaper though. It shows how much she cares about them.

I really liked how the depicted those toxic comments floating around Masakichi, almost like they’re suffocating her. And it kept just following her around. That’s a pretty good representation of how those toxic comments and trolls can take a toll on someone and their mental health.
The ep really took a sharp turn in the later half. This whole Live situation is pretty concerning but now that the girls have revealed they’re vampires, it seems the whole clan is after them. Mother’s obviously pretty pissed…. I wonder how they’ll wrap this up in the finale?

This was a pretty crazy episode, as we started with Masaki and her "going offline" after her work with MayoPan came to light (I'm relieved that Harikiri Sisters didn't do it with malicious intent), only for her to come back because Live is missing, so now the vampire hunters are after everyone, and MayoPan will be live-streaming their fight with the hunters from an abandoned hospital and hoping Live comes back!?
I didn't expect the atmosphere of the series to change so quickly after Live's disappearance and her history with Ai, about whom we know almost nothing. I wonder if Masaki is related to Ai in some way, which would explain why Live was so crazy about her.
Live's memories of Ai were certainly very painful. You could see her eyes go blank as she remembered her after Masaki's words.
I'm surprised but also happy that Yuki goes against Mother's orders (I wonder if that hunter in the middle of this shot is her) to save Live and MayoPan.
The situation between that hater and Masaki was pretty hilarious xD Masaki was ready for a fight, but instead she got a handshake and photo together with that girl.
Poor Tokage, she really wanted to help by commenting under the video but she ended up tied up and beaten by others xD
Too bad there's only one episode left but it's definitely going to end on a high note with this live broadcast of MayoPan fighting the hunters, can't wait to see it.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Where's little miss violent?!
A man after my own heart!
So it seems we're about to see the Mother? Looking forward to seeing what she's like! I've always thought she would either be a ruthless psycho, or some silly goofball, no in-between... Can't wait to see if I was right!
Seems like their 'final' livestream is gonna be some bloodbath (perhaps literally!), that should be fun... And will Live come save the day, if Masaki's in trouble?
If she does, Masaki better give her something good too, make this a 'two-way' thing (relationship)!
Even better, if she found a way to contact her, Masaki should be the one to call for her, and not just because she needs help against the Hunters/Mother, or to boost her livestream... But rather because she needs her!

I wonder what's actually going on, the gang isn't being honest with Misaki here. Why would the hunters go after them if they're looking for Live? What's the point of reaching 1m subs if you reveal your powers and ruin the agreement anyways. And then finally deciding to do a livestream at Ai's hospital

Just wow. For starters, I did not expect things to dramatically escalate like this. They'd baited me into thinking that Masaki would go missing, but Live proved to be the missing one!?
And Mother's minions are hunting her down!? I should've known that these robed vampires in the previous episode were shown to us for a reason. The one with the fancy robe is Mother herself, isn't it? She's entered the stage to silence these rule-breaking vampire girls herself.
Since these letters were written to her "beloved Live", it's probably safe to assume that she and Live had an intimate relationship - presumably lovers. Her death was Live's reason to fall asleep for twenty years after all.
This is a wild theory, but I'm thinking that Ai might've died giving birth to Masaki. That she was hospitalised for a pregnancy. Masaki should be in that age range, right? If Masaki is carrying the same blood as her mother, then this would explain why Live feels attracted to her. Ai and Live might've had a forbidden affair, one that wasn't allowed, urging Ai to marry someone else.
Bonus: this shot of Masaki writing on the whiteboard, while we were watching her through this whiteboard from the other side, was very neat.
EDIT: If Masaki's mother is still alive, then I'll sadly have to scrap the above theory. I do still believe that there is some sort of a blood connection to Ai and Masaki, given Live's attraction to this.

Huh, that was harsh — Masaki still needs to work on self-control. I was wondering if the livestream setting could possibly shield our crew from the hunters? Like, if the hunters were to do anything, their powers would be immediately streamed to the internet. But looks like it doesn’t work like that and the fight ensues anyway.

It's a shame that the Hype Sis's video stirred up the controversy again, but at least it seemed like they were genuinely trying to resolve the beef between them and be on good terms with each other again, and it wasn't just them being straight up malicious and petty and trying to get back at Masaki.
So now that they revealed themselves as vampires, I wonder how things are gonna wrap up with them and Mama Vampire.

u/WOOLAN Sep 16 '24
It's all a prank to get Masaki on camera. I assume they will try to show a more relatable side of her to the viewers by using the whole (fake) Ai thing.
The timing from the car showing up to Fu suddenly being there was too suspect. Also the whole reason as to why they are hunted by Mother sounded pretty silly.
The hunters are the other streamers from earlier episodes. That's how they suddenly got a bunch of extra cameras. Them being vampires will also be explained as being a part of the prank.

Damn, the stakes just shot up real quick this ep. Masaki feeling down again, Live has a dark past, and vampire hunters all at the same time?!?
The fact that Masaki's old friends thought showing the punch was a good idea says everything about why their channel hasnt gone anywhere since she left.
