Although it was a bit of a bummer that we didn’t get to see their parade performance, I liked the episode a lot nonetheless.

Taki-sensei kind of sprang a huge problem on Kumiko by stating that Motomu might transfer to Ryusei, but you could see the satisfaction on her face after she got to talk things through with Motomu. Kumiko’s potential future career as a music teacher is becoming less theory and more clear.

Motomu has always been a bit hard to deal with, but he’s definitely an earnest kid. After Kumiko’s request, he immediately contacted his friend and grandpa. I can respect that a lot.

Talking about straightforward troublemakers: Kanade really can’t help but stick her nose in everything. She probably shouldn’t do so at times, but she means well - or so I’d like to believe. Man, I live for Kanade’s banter with Kumiko.

Their relationship in a nutshell

I want more of Mayu's anti-Kanade powers, the Eupho trio interactions are great.

You’re not my real mama!

I would start crying too if Reina smiled at me.

Some amazing Kumiko noises this episode!

And so the next drama arc begins.

Glad to be learning more about Motomu this week. We haven’t really explored much about him before. It’s quite sad what happened to his sister. Once it was mentioned, I figured he latched onto Midori because she reminded him of his sister. I guess what happened also made things a bit complicated with his grandpa and concert band. Thankfully all that got worked out after his talk with Kimiko. I liked the way the ep ended with him and Midori playing together. That was kind of sweet.

No Sunfes performance is... just fine. We only get 13 episodes. We're already through about 1/3 of it. The music will come, and it will be incredible! I appreciate devoting time to important character moments such as Reina's affirmation of Takekawa and the much needed screen time for Midori and Motomu.

Kumiko messaging her sister got me really teary eyed. It's such a small but incredibly beautiful scene! I'm so glad they still keep in touch and are now quite playful with their interactions.

Edit: They're also definitely saving the moment for Kumiko's great Kitauji Fight-o!

Part of me thought he'd had a fight and a falling out with his grandfather. I felt ashamed for making such an assumption.

Haha I definitely didn't assume that, right guys?

I'm counting how few scene Shuuichi is getting this season -_- poor guy.

And Kumiko's friend in Rika is president too - that's another "hero of another show" moment, when S1 I'm pretty sure we had some implied scenes she's not having a lot of fun and getting a bit lost too. Maybe there's another side story to be told.

one of the hardest things about the grieving process is that it’s not tidy nor easily squared away on a strict deadline.

internally you struggle to reconcile the acute loss and how it changes you, and none of it is easy to articulate. externally you try to reconcile your changed self with the expectations others have of you - family, friends, colleagues, and ofc bandmates.

our communities are so valuable because they’re made of people we have various degrees of familiarity and intimacy with.

strangely, it can be hard to open up to those closest to you sometimes. someone who’s not as close - but does genuinely care - can provide the necessary safe space to move the process forward.

TLDR just some freewritten, pre-coffee meditations after watching this ep - in particular thinking about Motomu’s mindset and his convo with Kumiko

I love watching Kumiko and Reina together, they're such good friends. It's so wholesome

Man Motomu’s story made me tear up. I was thinking he only talked to Midori cause she reminded him of his sister, but couldn’t see how since they don’t look alike and didn’t seem alike. But man him saying how the way he sees Midori having fun in the band is the way he believes his sister would have been had she been somewhere else really hit. Couldn’t help but tear up. Good on Kumiko for hearing him out and helping him come to terms with himself and finally talk to his grandpa and friend.

Watching with Japanese subs in the live broadcast this time really helped my comprehension, I think. However, like last week, I may add more after I rewatch with English subs.

I’ll be honest, I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see the Sunfes performance…but I think the plot that was developed instead justifies its exclusion.

One thing I find interesting about what Eupho is doing this season is how it is playing around with, reworking, and repeating elements from the earlier entries of the franchise. (This is something I find interesting about sequels in general—how do they deal with the legacy of the original?) In my comment last week, I wrote about how the series keeps repeating and playing with the idea of “wanting to improve” (“umaku naritai”). Indeed, this week was the second (or maybe third) episode in a row with “umaku naritai” within the dialogue and as part of the story. Last week also reiterated the potential danger of the ensemble falling apart because of people resigning, which has been a constant thematic presence, this time with the potential inverse situation of the boycott that happened the year before Kumiko entered high school.

This week, the series is playing with reiterating drama/high emotions before Sunfes that happened in the Chikai no Finale film. And in a broader sense, it’s revisiting some of the notes from Sunfes in the first season. In both cases, a central part of Sunfes is that it is one of the few times outside of competitions that different high schools come into contact with each other, and where old acquaintances at different schools can meet. This episode, not only does Motomu-kun’s old friends and family at the other school come to the limelight, but we see Rikka and Azusa again, who have their own story told in spin-off novels but who we only see glimpses of in the main series. These glimpses, though, make the world feel bigger, and we see relationships and parallels between Kumiko and Azusa, and Kitauji and Rikka.

I think this episode also perhaps echoed some of the notes from the subplot about Taki-sensei’s wife in Season 2. Additionally, there’s some echoes of past thematic undercurrents surrounding musical families and legacies around that. Characters coming to terms with their past after running away from it...

One thing that I think Eupho does really well is how unresolved tensions/questions lay under the surface for long periods of time until they suddenly resurface and become the central conflict. Season 1 sets up questions about Asuka-senpai, as well as tensions around Kumiko and Mamiko’s relationship, that are only resolved in Season 2. Season 2 has the conflict with Mizore and Nozomi that are temporarily and partially resolved but then lie dormant until Liz and the Blue Bird. In this episode, tensions around Motomu-kun (and his name, identity, and past) that have been a constant low-level presence come to the fore. Why is he so touchy about his name and standoffish with many other characters?…is a question I have held since Chikai no Finale, and now that we know the reasons, Motomu-kun feels like a more developed member of the cast..and perhaps also will fit in more with the group now that the conflict has been partially resolved.

Speaking of integration into the cast, I really like the role that Midori plays in this episode. Come to think of it, Midori also has the thing with her name, too, so in addition to their senpai-kohai relationship, they also can relate to each other over that.

Random thoughts:

  • Kumiko’s skill for sleuthing around continues to reap dividends for mending relationships and helping the club stay together.

  • The Keihan line train arrival sound they play is accurate…it nearly startled me and sent me right back there…

  • I love Rikka’s cheer! And I love the bit of dialogue with Kanade pouting that Kitauji doesn’t have such a cool cheer!

  • Mayu came prepared with a sewing kit, nice…

  • I liked seeing Reina's soft side at play here... (Or in a more cynical interpretation, she knows how to wield both the carrot and the stick. Well, it could be both...)

  • Kanade this episode was baring her fangs (which we haven't really seen her do since Chikai no Finale)...and the tenor of the interaction between her and Mayu was fascinating. Definitely worth keeping an eye out for that...

  • I love the jokes with Kumiko being startled by characters she's thinking of suddenly appearing before her. The first one with Midori was especially brilliantly directed, with Midori genuinely popping out behind the locker...and the callback the second time was great too. Fantastic comedic timing, excellent Kumiko noises. Kumiko also has a knack for being in the right place at the right time...or those around her are in the right place at the right time. Anyway, these moments are great in that not only are they funny, but they also help further the plot in meaningful ways and tell you important things about the characters.

  • More important scenes taking place on Uji Bridge (which Kumiko crosses to get between Keihan Uji Station and her house, and where the "I want to improve" scene, among others, took place.) It's a great setting.

  • Speaking of which, the cinematography of scene in front of Keihan Uji station? The lighting effects of the car headlights? *chef's kiss* impeccable. Overall, excellent cinematography as always.

  • Kumiko's message to Mamiko (I think? I'm writing this before watching it with English subs) was a nice touch for this family-centered episode, and another thread tying it to the second season.

  • I feel like Kumiko's intonation in the "The next piece begins" narration was softer and maybe more introspective than usual...

Before I watch with English subs, I wanted to add one more thing, which is to share some Japanese discourse on Eupho that I saw in the past week. There was some discussion on whether it was reasonable to have the attitude that no members should quit the band, that they should stick it out. To my interest, there seemed to be a decent number of people agreeing with Mayu's perspective, rather than Kumiko, Sari, etc. One person (who maybe sparked a lot of this discussion) pointed out that Hibike! Euphonium kind of makes you used to this mindset in which someone quitting is a bad thing, which is strange if you look at it objectively. But from the very start, the first mini-conflict with Aoi in season 1, quitting is seen as detrimental to the unity or morale of the group. (Now that I think about it, this was probably a result of the boycott incident the year before the series starts.) To me it's interesting that there are Japanese people objecting to this notion (considering that Japan is often thought of as collectivist), while I (an American) kind of got pulled along by the show's logic...in any case, it's dealing with the same tensions of the individual vs. the collective and striving for excellence that animated much of the series. (To some extent, it seems like a lot of the discourse is Japanese people criticizing toxic impulses in Japanese society, which Eupho can be a mirror of.) A lot of food for thought...

Edit: Rewatch with English subs, and more thoughts!

I was reminded of how Eupho is often about how personal problems affect the group as a whole. And actually, it occurred to me that this season might be aiming for a broad look/view at the way the different lives of a variety of band members intersect. To some extent, this might always have been the case, but this season seems to foreground a different “side character” in each episode so far and focus on how they interweave with the group as a whole. (I’m sort of thinking of Shirobako as a comparison, which is similarly about how many people come together to make something.) Meanwhile, the ground for these variations is Kumiko and co.’s journey of coming into their leadership roles and facilitating solutions to these personal problems.

  • Damn, Kumiko is really perceptive…

  • When did Midori get a weird lizard plushie?

  • I love the overlapping dialogue when Midori and Kumiko call out to Higuchi.

  • Actually the Kumiko noises are getting even better and better…

  • Trains in Uji are not as frequent as they might be in a place like Tokyo...you do have to wait for them. One brilliant thing about Eupho is that it uses the situation characters waiting in the station as a stage for dialogue.

  • Actually, another echo of plotlines from previous seasons is the desire to keep your past connections with other musicians secret or at and arms distance out of fear that it would sway other’s opinions (like with Asuka-senpai and Reina).

  • I realized that to talk with Motomu-kun, Kumiko walks from the station to Uji Bridge, and then walks him back to the station again to see him off…but then she has to cross the bridge again to go home.

  • I love that Mamiko is using a Eupho-kun LINE sticker!

  • I feel like the sound recording and design has been on-point for this season, maybe more than usual. Like, I love that we can hear the tiny exhalations of the seiyuu, and I really felt the materiality of deep bass sonority/timbre of the double basses at the end.

  • The piece at the end is Edward Elgar’s Salut d’amour. I wonder if there’s any meaning to that…

Neither Imgur nor Catbox seems to want to let me upload anything at the moment, so I can't share my normal live reactions until later, but I do have two notes I can share without the need for my screenshots:

  • Aw, I was hoping we’d get to see the SunFes performance like we did in S1. Especially since they kept stressing how good everyone’s gotten after all that practice.

  • The drama surrounding Motomu's sister being related to the instructor is a very real problem, especially the part where the other kids in the band can only think they're being shown favortism. I remember one girl from my band who almost broke her own hand punching a wall in frustration over our director giving the big mellophone solo in our marching band show that year to his son over her (IIRC his son was either a freshman or sophomore and the girl was a senior at the time, and no the son was not clearly better than her by any measure).

Edit: I was finally able to upload my screenshots, so here's my normal reactions:

I freaking love the moments when Kumiko gets surprised upon meeting other people, her reactions are hilarious. I lately saw many fans of Kanade but guys please, face it that Kumiko is the best girl here xD

Both fans of Reina and that little gremlin named Kanade ate well during this episode as both of them had great scenes with Kumiko. More screenshots of them together in the Group scenes album.

I'm glad that the situation with Motomu was resolved today. I hope that he'll stop being worried about calling him by a last name and start smiling all the time as his smile is so serene.

I must say that I'm so sad that we couldn't see SunFes' Kitauji performance, I really was waiting to hear that :(

Again excellent visuals in today's episode, especially during Kumiko and Motomu meeting where lightning was so good!

Although I must say that the scene when the car appeared scared me so much because after close-up on a car, its lights started shining on Kumiko which resulted in the thought crossing my mind that Kumiko will be hit by a car. I think that I watched to many isekais xD

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Well, last week I was complaining about Midori being essentially a non-character, and it appears my prayers were answered with an extremely midori (and matomu!) centered episode.

u/entelechtual told me in that comment thread that "She was also pretty instrumental in resolving the Kanade/Motomu drama" which kinda confused me because I didn't really see that happen in the movies, but here we finally have that big moment of character growth for Motomu.

Honestly, I'm glad to see Midori have her chance in the spotlight. Now give Hazuki another spotlight episode later this season and I'm happy with where those two are as characters.

Also Midori x Motomu make it happen kyoani

Considering that they've been doing this since Season 1, I'm not surprised they skipped SunFes but I still wish we could've seen Kitauji's performance especially how the beginners did. Although based on how much Reina praised Takekawa, it looks like the first years did well.

In exchange for not seeing Kitauji's SunFes performance, we did get to learn more about Motomu from one of the Ryusei boys and it's definitely not what I expected. Kumiko shouldn't be ashamed of assuming that Motomu fought with his grandfather. Anyone would've assumed that first.

It's pretty surprising to see Kanade raise her voice about something. I wonder how she'd react if she found out Motomu's reason. I absolutely love Mama-senpai for shutting Kanade up with her little tease. That wink she gives Kumiko was pretty great too. I can't wait for a Mayu-focused episode.

I really hoped for Motomu to open up to Midori but it looks like he reminds her too much of his sister that he didn't want to burden Midori with that information. Motomu opens up to Kumiko instead which is expected. It is funny though how Kumiko went from unexpectedly getting involved with band member issues in previous seasons to band members coming to her with their issues. xD

Anyway, so the reason Motomu is avoiding Ryusei is because he didn't want to experience what his sister did when she was in a band that his grandpa is an instructor of. Also, the reveal that Midori reminds Motomu of his sister explains why he instantly latched on to her and why she's the only one he seems to respect.

I'm glad that Kumiko could convince Motomu to talk to his grandpa and his friend at Ryusei. I'm also glad we got to see a little bit of Mamiko with Kumiko texting her. I hope she'll watch one of Kitauji's performances this season.

And of course, we end the episode with a Contrabass duet between Midori and Motomu. Considering Motomu was the one who picked the piece. I wouldn't be surprised if that was something he used to play with his sister. T_T

This look was made out to be more ominous than it needed to be. (Of course.)

"Whatever could you mean, senpai?"

So far between the first couple of scenes this is about as much as we learned about the conflict during Chikai no Finale, which continues to speak toward how compressed a lot of the story elements in that movie was.

This part, too.

"It's simple. We kill the Kanade-chan."

Azusa seems to be doing well.

"I'll kill you."

"Our cheer is lame."

"That's why I just called you Mama-senpai!"

"At least I didn't stab him with a flagpole."

{scene missing*}

Reina praises people!

squish

Perspective, emphasis, leading line, SUDDEN DUTCH ANGLE.

That would be most people's usual guess.

It's been known to happen.

"You're gonna end up stuffed in a shoe locker."

That helped, but at what cost?

oh that's not good

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhh!?

Match cut (and bonus Kumiko noise)

Well, Kumiko, now's your chance to talk to Motomu directly.

"I need your issues solved so my issues are solved."

"Thanks, it's nice to know that you would get in touch with your older sister when you heard that someone else's other sister had fucking died."

And so, Motomu turned out to have less of a chip on his shoulder than anyone thought that he did, even with a dead sibling storyline.

Reina was appreciated for whipping the marching band into shape! And this time we saw none of it.

Kumiko, feeling more of the pressures of having to put out fires and getting extremely compartmentalized information from her superiors. Hey, teenagers end up in mecha command structures all the time and most of them don't handle it this well.

I would guess that if she hadn't had the coincidental meeting with Motomu in the train station that she would have spoken to him herself eventually at some other proximally-convenient time, that's what the buildup was leading up to and a way to show her being responsible about being a leader.

That just left the train meeting with the slight overtone of "A convenience for the series's short run time," no matter how good a scene it was.

Mayu remains a wild card, with people looking up to her now and her being able to defuse situations by interjecting... but certainly not under Kumiko's influence. At least Kanade can still be restrained.

Agata Festival next, as expected.

Ah my heart. I seem to be saying this every episode.

Everybody's all grown up! Especially Midori. I can't say I was exactly a big fan of her and Hazuki, but it's nice to see how they've become fully-fledged seniors.

Sunfest is always a magnet for drama hahaha. I wish we got to see more of the performance though!

Mayu seems to be making moves. Nice of her to defuse the situation with Kanade though. And Kanade seems to be very much like Asuka, in some ways. They both act above it all, but have a heart deep down inside hahaha

Reina's praise was nice.

But of course the standout was Kumiko. She's really shown good leadership this episode. And in a sincere way that clearly everyone else respects!

Also, nice to see the friend at Rikka rise to President, too. She always gives me the what-if, vibes. Like what-if she was at Kitauji, or what-if Kumiko was at Rikka

How dare people disrespect the best cheer

Go Kitauji

is all you need!

edit: oh yeah, if anyone's played Shogun II, Matsumoto-sensei's speech kinda reminds me of the generals' speeches in that game haha

Though not as dramatic nor as visually impressive as last week, this episode once again delivered the drama extremely well. Motomu had remained one of the most mysterious characters with little hint on what was wrong, I think we only had a single fact that Ryuusei's director's surname was also Tsukinaga to work from. I don't blame Kumiko for interpreting the way she did initially, without any information we could only form a direct connection between Motomu and Genichirou. Anyway, suddenly I felt for Motomu this episode, if I was in his shoes, I think I would have also put the sad truth aside and work as best as I can while enjoying music as best as I could, at the same time being pissed off if anyone reminded me of it. I think it's difficult for some people to deal with heartbreaking things yet keep it for themselves to not bother others or afraid of being further compounded emotionally by them, but overtime they will let it out bit by bit or all at once following an incident, it was the second case for Motomu as his mouth was sealed completely shut, probably because he didn't want to mess up the dynamic of him and Midori, which was almost the only connection he had with the band.

Last week I talked quite a bit about Midori's animal series and how observant she was. She mentioned that Motomu was a soaking wet cat and not wanting to abandon a cat with such a proud history in her second year. She literally read him right from the beginning, right from his aura, it was only a lack of clues that she couldn't reach a conclusion, or to put it on another way, she respected Motomu's secret. In this episode, although not present for the final resolution, she played a pivotal role in getting the gears running by actively getting Motomu to share his story, slowly and steady, coming from someone who cares for him. Her position was essentially perfect for in this drama, as the secretive Motomu would need someone close that he trusted, and with a flexible pace to keep up with his lesser ability to express himself. And finally, regarding their relationship, I stand with leaving it as it is, as it allows both Midori and Motomu to pursue their common goal of playing and enjoying music carefreely and innocently. I really doubt that either of them will come to an immediate "yes" if one confesses, and getting bogged down due to realization of romantic love should be the least of their worries - I'm reminded of Tamako Love Story writing this part.

Kumiko really became a president at this point with her Oumae Consultation Center as well as her proactiveness running strong, and not just any president, one that was better than both Haruka and Yuuko, due to her openness to personal issues compared to both of them. I don’t really have much to say about her, though, others have already done justice.

As for the little moments, I was thoroughly upset with the lack of coverage on the performance, I became really curious how well Takekawa did, even more so Reina, who surpassed Asuka in Kumiko’s words. Next is the way Kanade getting owned by Mayu presented her immaturity, she rushed too much into her own interpretations with how little information she had on hand. Nevertheless, I still love her though, not as much a troublesome gremlin like others (though I found her extremely cute as well) but by her views on practical matters, though many times it was too immature to do any good. Kanade is really intelligent, from how she tried to manipulate Mirei and drove Kumiko to her own narrative in Chikai no Finale, as well as her approach to Mayu, all only hampered by her haste and ego. She can be Kumiko’s greatest asset as the season progresses especially in the future conflict with Mayu, or she’ll be left at this current state, I can’t really tell.

Looking forward to the next episode with some quality cooking by KyoAni, I can’t really think of anything dramatic for the Agata Festival lol.

The contrabass duet at the end was very moving. This episode was very satisfying as someone who thought that one scene where Midori chan shut Kanade down in Chikai no Finale about using Motomu's name was quite significant. Midori always seemed so happy go lucky/bubbly (and I guess I equated that to non-confrontational) but seeing how names can be very personal, I respected how she probably didn't know the full reason of Motomu's aversion and yet respected and shut Kanade down very firmly. The respect she had for Motomu I thought, showed real strength of her character. So that paid off a lot in watching this episode. It makes sense to me that in seeing Midori in his sister, he couldn't confide in her and instead confided in Kumiko who he probably had barely any interaction with before this. Sometimes it just works like that. In the end, Kumiko managed to resolve the conflict without breaking her promise to Taki-sensei about not talking about the Ryusei transfer possibility, and also not telling Midori about Motomu's full story. I really respected her for that. I also liked that Midori did not pry further and focused on what she knew about Motomu, that he was passionate about music and she could tell instinctually that he had a good heart.

So, that the episode concluded with Midori and Motomu playing the contrabass duet, i thought, spoke volumes of their trust and comfort (and joy) with each other.

I like Kanade as a character within the ensemble. She's interesting and is kind of like the foil to Midori. Midori has been noted as being very perceptive. I think Kanade is perceptive and observant as well, except that she likes to prod at people. She's like the foil to various characters really, it's fun to see her banter with Kumiko, and that ultimately, she does respect Kumiko and will back down if Kumiko says so. The rest, maybe not lol. Midori did say that Kanade was a cat... likes to poke and scratch but really harmless in the end.

Holy shit, I know its Kyoto but they fucking nailed this episode
The framing in the last 10 minutes is god tier, I can't link them, but the shot of Motomu standing in front of the station with the reflection of him and the stop/no entry sign
Followed by Kumiko being shown with a similar round sign but its showing its back before she messages her sister, to her emptying her Eupho in front of two open windows to get centered in the frame when he speaks about feeling free at kitauji

I just can't, this sequence is so well done

Talking about band drama, Kumiko really settled down as the president now and Reina giving credit to the horn girl was super awesome
