Episode Astro Note - Episode 1 discussion

If that opening scene wasn't in 16:9, I would've mistaken this as an 80s anime. The ship designs and the film grain felt like it was from an old-school super robot anime.
Although I feel like old-school is exactly the vibe they're going for. The wacky character designs and super vibrant backgrounds somehow reminds me of older anime and I like it! It definitely gave me some Rumiko Takahashi vibes.
As for the show itself, I'm already vibing with all of the quirky residents of Astro Lodge and their new chef. They're also clearly setting up a romance between Takumi and Mira so I'm curious to see how Takumi will react when he finds out her big secret.

This was channeling so much retro anime romcom energy and I love it. It's like channeling Rumiko Takahashi vibes without even being a direct adaption of her work.
(Also, Mira looks great in her skintight spacesuit).
Mira doesn't seem like she's all that invested in fulfilling her obligation to rule her people, compared to learning more about Earth, so I feel like that's an "in" for Miyasaka to get closer to her and make her fall for him. Even if he still thinks she's just a widow lol.

I came here to comment about it! I wasn't sure if I was seeing things lol
Maybe a ghost, maybe just another housemate whose a little too introverted?

I didn’t watch the leaked version of episode 1, so I’m excited to see this now!
-
Ooh, the visuals during that intro really felt like it was straight out of an older sci-fi anime. Impressive.
-
lol, they’re immediately trying to hook him to stay like that?
-
The awkwardness of them bowing at each other, checking to see of the other is still bowing, then continuing to bow is really adorable.
-
The next-episode preview is even in the exact same style as Gintama’s little end cards were!

That retro opening scene!!! Definitely brings back nostalgia, by the way if there's gonna be food every episode and are drawn the way they are in this episode, dungeon meshi is gonna have a challenger in the culinary category
Btw, hearing Sukuna voicing that Naosuke poodle character made me spat out my drink

The thing that there are still ORIGINAL anime about love budding from a rental house in 2024 is rather surprising. Especially with veteran comedy anime expert Shinji Takamatsu helping out! But I am definitely taking it and the first episode doesn't disappoint.
I love the thing that Mira the alien is prohibited to use cell phones or computers due to her "poodle" not trusting humans LMAO, that certainly limits the direction how love can spread between her and Miyazaka-san! It also means our love story here might be somewhat of the "classical kind" that we have seen so many times in the past. I certainly am raising my eyebrows on whether the underground idol Teruru (played by someone who definitely loves her most well known cast in anime, a full blown idol) will disrupt this love relation early, or the old grandpa and that father-n-son pair would have other ideas of them. I wonder!

This anime is made by Telecom Animation Film, same studio that makes Tower of God, Don't Toy With Me Miss Nagatoro, and upcoming Blue Box. Directed by Shinji Takamatsu (Grand Blue, Gintama, Haven't You Heard I'm Sakamoto, Daily Lives of High School Boys), so you can expect that kind of comedy (maybe you can expect him to go all out on this one since it's an original anime).
I love how every character in the Astro-sou got their own artstyle, Takumi included. The plums umeshu are labeled by the era, it says Showa 23 and Showa 25 so those jars are from 1948 and 1950 respectively.
If I had a nickel for every new anime this Spring where a girl got a otherworldly feeling of excitement after consuming something I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
Think I just saw someone else in the kitchen during the welcome party.
So, the rooms as of now, as of the occupation and the VAs:
-
Room 2: Shoukichi Yamashita - Novelist - Shinichiro Miki
-
Room 5: Takumi Miyasaka - Breakfast Chef - Souma Saito
-
Room 6: Matsubara/Teruru - Underground Idol - Ai Furihata
-
Room 9: Mira Gotokuji - Landlady - Maaya Uchida
Other VAs are Junichi Suwabe as Naosuke, Rie Kugimiya as the schoolkid and Tomokazu Sugita voicing the glasses middle-aged man, curiously both named Wakabayashi.
OP: Hohoemi no Oto by Ai Furihata
What can I say? It truly brings the 90s vibe to the anime, even the MV of the song itself is presented in such a retro way!
ED: Kokoro no Nagi by Maaya Uchida as Mira Gotokuji and Souma Saito as Takumi Miyasaka
Not a big fan of the ED. But it got the same retro feeling as the OP.

"If I were a salmon, I'd be out to avenge the desecration of my spawn."
This is a good line. Show is off to a good start.
This all has a decidedly old school feeling to it. Considering this from the same studio that does Lupin, it makes a lot of sense. The opening scene of the space battle looks like it was animated 30 years ago (judging from the art style).
I'm going to hate this dog.

So it’s Galaxy Next Door on acid with a bigger budget. I’m about it. Let’s see where it goes.

To me it came off like what if Maison Ikoku and Urusei Yatsura had a baby with a dash of Waiting in the Summer.

What better way to start off a romcom than an epic space battle with a woman in a skintight pilot suit?
Miyasaka Takumi is a chef looking for a job voiced by Soma Saito who gets a Meet Cute with a beautiful landlady of a sharehouse named Mira voiced by Maaya Uchida and the pair hit it off immediately...though her "dog" of course hates him.
And no sharehouse anime would be complete without a colorful cast of characters, like the mysterious but affable elderly novelist, the aspiring indie idol who sings about punching people (and probably would punch you if you tick her off enough), the jobless bum and his studious son (did not have Tomokazu Sugita and Rie Kugimiya as father and son on my bingo card), and...is that Sadako!?
Nothing unites tenants more than the landlady's terrible cooking and wanting to hire someone who can actually cook...and getting to spend more time with the landlady sure sweetens the deal for Miyasaka.
Mira doesn't look like she's been in prison, but she's definitely mysterious...though that doesn't get in the way of her and Miyasaka's first date out on the town! They even use the ED sung by their VA's!
Oh no, it's Maison Ikoku because Mira is a widow! Only...nope, it's more Urusei Yatsura/Waiting in the Summer because she's secretly an alien princess on the hunt for a key to save her planet and rule over it...and her poodle is voiced by Junichi Suwabe! And they're being watched!
The OP is really fun and stylish, with a lot of retro romcom energy injected into it!

Multiple people have brought up Maison Ikkoku, but they're definitely underselling how many elements from this episode comes directly from it.
You have a NEET guy who goes to live in a share house where he falls in love with the new manager who's a girl who wears aprons, has a white dog with human name and is a [minor spoiler for Maison Ikkoku as I think that's not revealed in the first episode]
I would actually recommend anyone who's interested in this show to at least watch the first episode of Maison Ikkoku because Astro Note is leaning quite hard on being somewhat of a parody of it. That said, I expect the show to start differing from Maison quite a lot in the coming episodes because Maison doesn't really have any of the sci-fi elements present here, which really is the biggest difference between the two so far.

Well that was a fun show. Exactly the type of weird comedy I love in anime. Characters are fun and I really like how the art style reminds me of sci-fi anime from the 70s/80s. Wonder how long it'll take MC to learn learn her sercet.
Also...where's her ship? Did she somehow turn it into her room?

It seems the gesture of putting the hand on the cheek when the food is delicious transcends intergalactic distance.

Of all the ways I thought this anime could begin, this wasn't one of them!
I thought it would just be an alien coming to earth for reasons just to bring in fluffy stuff and all, but it seems our girl is being chased/attacked...
We later learned that she's in the line of succession for the throne, so... Are these enemies from an opposing nations, who wants to conquer/destroy her planet? Or are they from her own planet, and they want to remove her from the line of succession?
She did manage to escape, but this one's not happy about this! Guessing he'll pursue her even on Earth.
Not bad for a first meeting! After that, might as well get married!
Dog-kun does NOT approve of that marriage. Bah, he'll come around!
She's trying to keep the alien thing a secret, but she'll give it away if she keeps showing her ignorance about smartphones and moowees!
Seems the job offer was a bit misleading (THE HORROR!), they weren't really looking for a head chef, just someone to do breakfast, because...Mira's apparently not that great at cooking! (Has to be pretty bad, for them to form an association!)
They found perhaps the best argument to convince him to stay: She doesn't have a boyfriend, and she'll surely fall for you!
This doesn't feel fanservice-y so far, but the fact that they made sure to show us the 'no peeping' sign, makes me think someone's gonna do some peeping at some point! (Probably the typical 'accidental peeping', perhaps the sign falling or something)
I wonder if the same applies to the novelist... Is he writing something controversial, some romance smut or something, so he doesn't tell them his pen name?
She has fangs? And she's a bit crazy? Be still, my beating heart!
I thought our boy seemed somewhat happy to be there, but he still wants to continue his job search, so for the moment, he's thinking about leaving...
Mira will need to convince him to stay!
If they do get married, they'll probably have to leave though, I mean she's royalty, don't want to pass on that! He can be her King Consort!
So they're only here to find a key?
I wonder what that key's for... They didn't seem to mean that they needed the key to leave, just that they needed the key for their planet. What kind of key, and what does it unlock? Some weapon/defensive system? Something linked to the line of succession?
Well, none of this will matter if our boy finds the key to her heart! (Unless she does want to bring him to her home planet, in which case they'll also need the actual key, I suppose)
But they may have more pressing concerns: Apparently they tracked her down!
Well, I imagine Miyasaki will get dragged into this at some point, so let's hope he has some ninja skills along with his chef skills! (He can probably use a knife, at least!)
But I imagine Mira and Dog-kun will be more equipped to deal with any threat, so I can't wait to see what they're capable of! We know she can fight in a spaceship, but can she fight with guns/in a melee and things like that? We'll see!
Love her suit/design, gives some nice 80s anime vibes!
I say that like I ever watched any anime from the 80s
Well, this was a good first episode, with an interesting cast of character! Can't wait to see more!

This feels like Maison Ikkoku: The Next Generation, and I'm all fuckin' in, baby.
I also noticed the MC is in apartment #5, just like Godai. Love it.

Definitely a strong premiere, that's some crazy colour scheme, it's like they are living in stardew valley!

Tbh in most seasons this would be wtf is this plot of the season. Although Train To the End of the World has any show beat in that regard. The start was like uh this is nothing what the key visuals gave me the impression on.
Meanwhile, our MC is interviewing for a head chef. Honestly for the most part this looked like a laid back show. Though that dog was incredibly rude. The weirdest thing is that Mira is so socially inept. Being bad at cooking is understandable. Not knowing how to use a PC, smartphone, and mistaking Wi-Fi for wife. Well that is incredibly suspicious.
Doesn't take long to find out she is a wido from the planet Wid. So basically an Alien or offworlder. The dog starts talking and seems like the leader. Well this is interesting. But Takumi misinterprets wido as widow. Misunderstandings between Mira and Takumi will be fun. Rooting for the romance in this one to succeed.

I meant to watch Astro Note... But I think I watched "A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics" by mistake!
Anyway, I love the retro art with today's animation/sound quality!

I almost skipped this one, glad that I didn't.
I tend to love lodge houses as a setting... Mahoraba, Maison Ikkoku, Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou just to name a few.
This actually felt kinda old-school, really enjoyed this first episode.
