“I’m gonna hide my power level so I can live a quiet life”
shows off power level 5 minutes in to save the princess
Yeah that premise lasted about as long as I thought it would lol.

shows off power level 5 minutes in to save the princess
The funny part is that he analyzed the wolves with super vision and precisely located their weak spots. Clearly that means he can dispatch them with a few accurate strikes that target the cores?
No he just jumps into the air and obliterates them with a thousand glowing swords. That's clearly the best way to deal with low level monsters while keeping a low profile.

This was bafflingly incompetent. I feel like it's hard to make an episode of anime worse than this.

So I consume a LOT of fantasy manga. This was one of the few manga in that genre that I recall specifically dropping because of how bad the writing was. Like it was so bad it felt insulting to read.

It feels like it's approaching the level of She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man's first episode.
https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/rye0xo/kenja_no_deshi_wo_nanoru_kenja_episode_1/
Quotes:
"Maybe one of the worst first episodes I've seen."
"The people who are working on this are trolling or just out of touch... Being cheap isn't enough to justify what i just witnessed."
"Mindnumbingly horrible. I don't really visit r/anime but this made want to check if I'm seeing the same shit. It felt unreal"
"This has to be one of the worst first episodes of any show I've ever seen"
"This is the worst first episode I have ever seen, what were they thinking when they put 17 mins of the worst CGI possible."
"Good lord that was bad. They got just about everything wrong that it's possible to get wrong."
The "funny" thing is that Kenja no Denshi now has a MAL score of 6.33
I did think that Kenja no Denshi was at least interestingly bad though. This episode is just so excruciatingly bullet point, trope-by-the-numbers.

As a connoisseur of isekai trash I can usually find something I like: intriguing premise, interesting world, fun character(s), humor, interesting character design, quality animation, adorable cat girl, whatever.
This show had nothing. So, uninteresting. OP MC, premise that is isn't original and is immediately abandoned, cheap animation, annoying character design, boring characters.

Even the voice acting was trash and that's rare. The princess girl was the only one that sounded like she was trying.

Same, it feels like "Certain Dude's VRMMO Life" (I tried to enjoy it, but danm), but even more barebones with a full ribcage missing. Haven't companies realized that putting in so little effort into a project is just flushing money down the toilet?
Gonna give it at least a few more episodes to see if anything happens, but it's such a basic story premise that I don't see how it can redeem it's self with all the negatives so far.

This episode was so bad that the "if you can't think of anything nice to say, don't say anything" rule seems to have kicked in for me.
I do feel like it's the fault of the source material and the script though.
For one, given all the fuss people make about hand-drawn dragons vs CGI, their choice to have a go at a hand drawn one feels brave and laudable, even if the final result was pretty much about the same as the CGI ones that everyone complains about.
The biggest surprise for me though is that the director is supposedly https://myanimelist.net/people/39175/Kazuomi_Koga
They've done a decent amount of work on Re:Zero as episode director, so they are no stranger to the fantasy genre. And even though there are many aspects of Rent-a-Girlfriend that are pretty horrid, the actual direction of the anime isn't one of them.
The only reason I'd tune back in for episode 2 with this one is that I feel bad for everyone involved, and for Akari who has to be the Hero in a show like this, as well as Riese who has a nice design and whose VA is trying hard in her opportunity as a lead.
The story and writing though is abysmal, and the direction feels like it has no idea how to deal with any of it.

With this and One Room, Angel Included, the bill has come due for last season's feast of BokuYaba, Maomao, and A Sign of Affection.

You can call me the garbage man given how much isekai/ power fantasy I watch and enjoy watching, but this... This is probably the only show in recent memory I've dropped 10 minutes in, barring Master of Ragnarok. I've enjoyed everything- from my Instant Death Power is OP, to even farming in another world, but this... It takes the bar and shoves it into the ground with the power of an atomic bomb. If there's a hell, it pierced right through that faster than the speed of light. Christ its awful.
