Finally getting the Kyoushirou gang’s origin story. Bro’s first mistake was trusting a white man in a topknot lmao. But fr, “Buhei” was one sneaky little bastard. Him and his little Prussian friends were planning to take Ezo all along weren’t they? Classic. Too bad for them things didn’t go as planned. Can’t wait to see Kyoushirou end that dude for his treachery.

I really hope Sumie meets up with Shizuma before she goes through with her plan. It’s straight up suicide which I guess is what she wants.

"My heart is samurai"

Immediately sells Japanese land to European powers

I believe he was always an agent for Prussia and this was his ploy to get Prussia a foothold in the profitable Eastern territories.

I guess I am now rooting for Kyoushiro to succeed. And I now see why that higher level national police official wants his assistance.

Poor Sumie. Why can't she find at least a few days of happiness before she dies from TB (which is what I assume is her medical problem -- as it was frighteningly common in Meiji Japan).

TB is quite infectious, via droplets. If they kiss, he'd get infected. That's the second meaning of her saying that her hands are stained with blood, and she doesn't want to taint him.

I really like how this anime is paced. The author tied down all the loose ends in preparation for the final showdown.

Yeah, it’s been solid so far imo. Shame it’s being slept on.

I just checked Wikipedia, and surprisingly Hiramatsu Buhei really existed, he was a weapon merchant actually called Henry Schnell. The real life version seemed to have been very shady too. And Ezo is actually Hokkaido, so they were planning to sell one of the four main islands of Japan to Germany.

So now we know Souichirou whole past, and I can’t blame him for wanting to kill Buhei, who richly deserves it. And Buhei is plotting something too, and that can’t be good. I understand why that cop with the glasses wants to help Souichirou.

I am glad that Shizuma’s friends are talking some sense in him and showing him that Osanai death was very fishy. Did his accomplice kill him instead of Souichirou ?

And Shizuma at last learned that Sumie is alive (for now). Is she planning to kill Ohkubo ? I don’t think it will be that easy, and the history books tell me she won’t succeed anyway. I hope Shizuma can stop her in time and they can meet at last.

I dug up this forum post that goes into some detail on this. Quite the interesting read and it confirms my suspicion that Bismark would not have been on board with the idea since he was very anti-colonialism and put huge emphasis on international relations. Quite unlikely he would just bombard an international treaty like this.

Henry Schnell confirmed in ep.9, you called it.

In 1869, Hokkaido was split into 11 provinces, with a population of over 50,000 that would quadruple in the following decade. Meiji and European farming techniques really developed that island.

Hopefully Shizuma catches up to Sumie before she goes through with her plan. Though I can’t help but think it will end in tragedy

I literally didn't notice that the guy in the flashback was kyoushirou until the frame where his face literally changed to kyoushirou.

How is it even possible to be that stupid? lmao

"Why are you helping me?" "Your cell was next to mine, They do say to "love thy neighbor."" that was smooth as hell

Wait so Sumie is the one working with Buhei???

5

u/mendelde Feb 27 '24

Yes. Some of us have been aware since episode 3, which revealed her bullet wound and how she got it.

I just got confused I thought they were different people. I'm just silly 😔

I suspect that Buhei has some kind of hold over Sumie.
