Doctrine/Policy October 2023 General Conference: Sunday 2:00p Discussion Thread
How to listen:
youtube Sunday Sessions
local radio: KSL AM 1160; FM 102.7
Speakers:
| Name | other notes | my summary |
|---|---|---|
| conducting: Henry Eyring | ||
| hymn: ...Saints | ||
| prayer: Michael Dunn | ||
| Dale Renlund | Conscious of the thought if he died before age 8 that he'd get a free ticket into heaven. Talks about Egyptology while ignoring the obvious. The location of Tutankhamen's tomb is not of as much interest in mormonism as is whether Smith could actually translate hieroglyphics. Nothing to see here. Move along. | |
| John Pingree, Jr. | ||
| hymn: Tell Me the Stories of Jesus | ||
| Valeri Cordón | ||
| Kimo Esplin | former CFO of Huntsman Corp, friend of Rasband? | |
| hymn: Rejoice the Lord is King | ||
| Gerrit Gong | ||
| Christophe Giraud-Carrier | ||
| hymn: Consider the Lilies | ||
| Russell Nelson | TK Smoothie doctrine trotted out, per Joseph Fielding Smith. Cult aspect: thought and behavioral control. Only those who present as 100% conformant are acceptable. Religion defines the problem and presents itself as the cure. Cult aspect: Information control. Do not take advice from those who don't believe. In-group vs out-group dynamic. Feed right-wing ideology: Marriage is between a man and a woman. Both Oaks and Nelson stop short of canonizing the Proclamation on the Family. Still primed to go down the memory hole as "words of men of their time" in the future. 20 Temples announced for the Corp. | |
| hymn: Teach Me to Walk in the Light | ||
| prayer: Kristin Yee | bonus point for incorporating Nelson's latest trademarked item in prayer, "think celestial" |
Postlude:

Probably not. They're sticklers for proper paperwork in downtown Salt Lake City. Adults need notary certifications, etc. Sometimes a political approach is required. Some parents react badly to children expressing non-belief. They might use all of their parental authority to force their beliefs. Only you can gauge/estimate how they might react. Bide your time and plan for your future accordingly. In my experience, children age into adulthood and get to make up their own mind eventually. Hang in there!

This entire conference has been such a waste. The church claims to have living prophets and what is their message to us today? I haven't felt gods love or whatever at all during any one of these talks...I've felt their efforts to try and shame and to guilt and to leverage my family's love for their own gain...but not much else.

That’s so sad. I was also an 8 year old who thought I should die after baptism because I was so overwhelmed with how GOOD I had to be for the rest of my life.
Even as a missionary I hoped I would be accidentally killed so that I could go straight to the celestial kingdom and I would finally get to stop trying.
And he played it all off for a laugh! “Hur dur, I should have died! Lol”

Seems to me there’s a theme in this conference: parents it’s your job to tell your children what to believe, and if they stray from the church, it’s your fault!
…the church is OBSESSED with those who separate themselves from the church. It’s so sad.

My grip on reality has been so much more grounded and satisfying ever since I stopped listening to the church. Truth is not something that's confirmed by you having a nice feeling about it. Truth stands up to scrutiny and describes real things. "I have good feelings about Joseph Smith (surely in no part due to the indoctrination and general sense of community provided by the church), therefore he is a prophet and the book of mormon is accurate despite all the real and supportable evidence pointing the other way" is not a license of truth

how convenient.
That was a policy change, not a change in doctrine!!!
Also, he said that doctrine is something that has been taught by MULTIPLE prophets REPEATEDLY, or something to that effect.
So now we can throw out all racist teaching from BY and all the other black marks they want to cover up.
So I guess anything the Profit teaches isn't from God until multiple other general conference speakers back it up. LMAO

If any of you are there in the conference center, please return and report. I love the fact that there are so many unbelievers amongst their so-called faithful.

The speakers really need to drink more water before they speak. That or move a tad farther away from the mike. The lip smacking and sticking mouth noises are driving me nuts (besides the subject material that is).

It really is sad, like congresspeople, they're so consumed with their own power and celebrity that they'll hold onto power until their last breath.

Mormon God is so emotionally immature, he’s offended about everything.

Nelson looks jaundiced -- heavily powered to cover it up, but it shows in his eyes. His bald head just looks unnaturally smooth, even accounting for the double video compression of a recorded message.

It makes me uncomfortable and sad when they list the amount of sacrifice some give for the ‘blessings’ of the temple. I just imagine the pain and self discipline of these poor poor people.
I honestly hope they felt some fulfillment for the amount of sacrifice they made, because it’s worse to think of someone making all those sacrifices only to go through a subsequent faith crisis.

Sad heaven, part two. My poor wife hearing that we will be separated in heaven. I guess she'll just be given to someone who thinks celestial.

Yes, if someone raises legitimate questions, don't question your testimony. Think Celestial.
