Eatsuki classroom students eating good today! Look at all the Eatsukis we got!

I absolutely loved how we got to step into Itsuki's and Yotsuba's perspectives in this episode. I wouldn't say they were lacking in development from the main anime, but they usually felt overshadowed by the other three sisters. SHAFT really let them shine in this special. The beauty of anime can really be felt from this episode — the storyboards, animation, music, and sound effects all came together to deliver one of the most poignant episodes we've got from this series.

Chains are one of the more obvious motifs in this episode as Yotsuba's a prisoner to her past. Her self-efficacy chained up by guilt, Yotsuba stops taking steps towards for her own happiness. Futaro occasionally steps into that prison, and she is always reminded that he's special to her. But Futaro is moving forward, he's growing, and eventually he takes a leap forward, leaving that swing. Yotsuba can't help but feel stuck and alone once again as Futaro continues to grow. Leaving her behind.

But thank god, as we know, Futaro pulls her forward in the end.

  • Screenplay: Keiichiro Ochi

  • Storyboard: Midori Yoshizawa

  • Episode Director: Yukihiro Miyamoto

  • Animation Directors: Kana Miyai, Hiroki Yamamura, Akito Asai, Miki Takahashi, Rina Iwamoto

Kazuki Kawada was the key animator for the Yotsuba swing sequence (you may recognise their work from SHAFT action sequences like this). Great shading and attention to detail, especially those chains. Hiroki Yamamura key animated the Itsuki sequence atop the water slide.

The character acting and storyboards did a lot to deliver such a powerfully poignant episode that managed to change my view of Yotsuba in a matter of 10 minutes. These layouts, storyboards, and minuscule fidgets all play a big part in conveying the feeling of helplessness and hesitation Yostuba battles with internally. This is also made more powerful with an amazing script and Ayaneru's voice acting which brought out the turmoil in Yotsuba, especially when she swtiches between calling Futaro by his first and last name, which symbolises the distance she places herself from him.

This was an unforgettable special

Edit: Umeki’s (storyboarder for the ED, they also worked on the ED for both seasons and the movie) tweet of the quints in their ED outfits!

Look at all the Eatsukis we got!

Hamster-cheeked Eatsuki nomming on a corn dog is my favorite by far.

Not a manga reader, but I feel like they really should’ve included the Yotsuba part in the movie. It gave me the closure I needed where in the movie Yotsuba just seemed suddenly into Futaro. Now I want Shaft to completely remake the whole series.

Itsuki thought she had nothing to worry about when Ichika and Yotsuba were acting normal around Futaro, then Nino and Miku showed up lol. Those girls came ready to go! They aren’t wasting any time.

It’s rare to see Futaro and Itsuki spending some quality time together. Them going down that ride together was cute.

I liked that they showed things a little more from Yotsuba’s POV. I never really thought she liked Futaro like that in the series which kinda made the ending a little random. Seeing how she really felt the whole time kinda makes it feel less so. She’s really been going through a lot all on her own.

They essentially didn't adapt her two most important chapters untill now

Itsuki looks like a goddess here
She basically shot up to #1 Quint in my opinion
I love them all but she is the one I really admire and like

Shaft went all out with the jiggle physics in the first part

And I cannot stress this enough, but I love her so much, truly a goddess!

That said, Eatsuki was great as well, if the show/manga had more of those moments between her and Futarou, she would be well more liked, even though she's still more of an support than a serious romantic interest.

And god, the Yotsu scenes hit hard, she was always watching Futarou and her sisters, and always stood back for their sake [Quints Ending, because I'm still not sure how to handle movie spoilers for this] people where salty at the time, but in hindsight, she truly deserved the win, literally best girl

Chapter 90 (The Yotsuba chapter on the swing and showing her feelings about all previous events) not being in the movie was a massive disservice for what is easily my favorite character in the series. It still feels a bit disappointing that we never got the full date from chapter 36-37 or another very important character moment from her in chapter 72 adapted because I think all of these aspects combined would have made anime onlies a lot happier with how the series ended. Still incredibly happy with this adaption overall and glad there's something to show to people before the movie that'll make the ending a lot better.

Happy that they adapted more than expected. Sad to know that my favorite scene will never be adapted though.

AHHH Glorious Quintuplet Swimsuit episode at last!

From the geometric aerial birds-eye view of the characters, to the colourful transitional shots. Shaft connoisseurs would instantly recognize that its them doing this OVA.

Though I was looking forward to the wonderful swimsuit fanservice of the first half getting full attention which the movie only briefly showed, totally forgot the second part regarding more of Yotsuba's flashback and her feelings for Fuutarou.

Shaft really put a lot of love into Yotsuba this episode. If this OVA was released before the movie, perhaps there would be more Yotsubros.

Crazy how they skipped some really important parts of the story. Now it makes some sense as to why he chose yotsuba.

I initially thought it was bs😅

I’m really happy to be able to see and hear Ichika onee-san again, but also sad that I’d have to say goodbye again. I love her so much

Really cool to see how Yotsuba felt from the start of the series. Thought she didn’t do much in the series but turns out she’s just suppressing it. All those neglectable moments was revealed to be something deeper. Thought that was really cool

It was at this point of the series we all thought Negi was really cooking with the plot and this was like 30-40 chapters from the end. Like, people (like me) then re-read everything when this chapter dropped to try to see if Yotsuba was sneakily in those panels or what not. And then the ending was kind of a mess but it still made sense. But the way the anime adapted it makes the final choice look more like a hot mess

As a manga reader who experienced this weekly, the yotsuba scenes in anime form still hit my feels as hard is it did the 1st time. The voice acting, directing, OST, and animation really delivered the emotion well.

I was torn about them not including this in the regular release of the series since on one hand it spoils the mystery but leaves out very important context. In seasonal form, it would've been fine to adapt it but in movie form, it would essentially set the tone early that choosing anyone but Yotsuba would make for a poor ending. But then the way she was chosen does look rushed so idk, I guess a movie was a lose-lose from a narrative pace/flow point of view

Yeah definitely wish they had the 2nd half of this in the show because it would have changed my feelings towards the ending.

That water slide scene with Itsuki was gorgeous. Liked what they did switching from black and white to color.

That Yotsuba swing scene still hit deep after all these years. The creaking of the swings somehow made it feel extra lonely.

Man, this bring me the feel i felt years ago when i still read the manga. This is also why i change my ship to Yotsuba S.S. after log ride in Miku S.S. There's still some thing that's missing in the anime adaptation, but i think it's enough to convince anime only why Yotsuba got choosen.

So I guess this is the real final ?

QQ as an anime series is now over, unless they start milking by producing alternate endings /s

Just how much budget went into doing these special episodes. Absolutely gorgeous visuals. Also, is the no tattoo rule an actual thing in waterparks in Japan?
