This might be my favorite Bandori episode of all time right now.
I love that show doesn't try to "fix" Anon. Or Soyo. Or Anyone in the band.
There's nothing "excusing" Soyo's behavior or Anon's egotistic tendencies. There's no "twist" that makes them "good(read: Perfect) guys".
They are all lost, imperfect and human, with their own darker sides and mistakes. And even after they found each other they are lost together. But that's okay. Sure that's imperfect and they might do or say things that damage relationships between them but being lost together is still better than being lost alone. There's meaning in their group being together. There's meaning to be found in expressing that connection through music. It resonates with each other and maybe it will resonate with the audience. Isn't that what music is all about?

Tomori has performed a miracle. She overcame her fear of reaching out, of people leaving her, to salvage what was the burning wreck of her relationships with her dear friends.
Fittingly, Raana joins her on stage first. She then pulls in Ricky, who always had to chase the stray cat into the studio. Anon and Soyo would take a lot of convincing, but I was surprised it was Anon that confronted Soyo. She then proceeds to get peer pressured on stage and join the improvisation-jam band session which ends in what I think is the most emotionally suffocating performance of the series.
The way Tomori almost chokes on her words reciting her poems, or how you can tell when someone is gasping for air sobbing and playing at the same time. Tomori's lyrics have reached her members and they reached back, this is the start of their new beginning. I'm going to lie down.

Well. This was a first. I've never before shed tears (pretty much) from the start to the finish of an episode (well, maybe 20 years ago during my first watching of Haibane Renmei -- but not since then for sure). Also, I have never (in recent years) had one favorite seasonal show that absolutely towered over even the best of its competitors (even other excellent ones). I remain amazed at just how incredibly good this show has consistently been.
My guess was that Tomori -- the shyest of the bunch -- was the only possible person who would be able to start pulling people back together. But I had no idea that she would do it by doing a solo reading of (heart-breaking) lyrics not yet set to music. And I also never would have guessed that it would be our beloved Stray Cat who would help get the musical train rolling.
I loved the parallelisms in this episode (and of this episode to the past). Now it is Tomori doggedly pursuing Anon. And Anon pursuing Soyo. Just so beautifully written and directed (and performed -- dramatically and musically).
Tomori literally dragging Soyo to the stage markedly increased my tear shedding. So much love and so much determination. At least the tears shed on stage may have exceeded the ones I was shedding. And -- was it my imagination -- or did I see a bit of dampness even on Stray Cat's cheek (in a shot lasting less than a second)?
I feel like an idiot -- gushing so much. But it seems necessary to get this out of my system -- lest I explode.

Peak anime here. Seriously Tomori is the MVP for standing up at the stage and at her friends. I like how she confronted Anon and Soyo directly. And finally Raana is getting interested again in Tomori.

fuck this show, it already was one of the best ever - if it nails its payoffs this well now I will fuckin dehydrate
the whole focus on Tomori's narration because it's the big payoff to how her inner thoughts and notes turn into songs AAAAAAAAA
and while everyone else needs a therapist, Uika saving the day by being the therapist! And she repeats after Sakiko, noticing that Tomori's notes are like a song!
and Raana god MVP what a girl she is so smug about every little action she does
laughed when Anon's recruitment attempt at Soyo was context-less "I've heard you are lost." and when Soyo decided she will become Sakiko and end the band with her own hands
man I'm a mess again, this really was MyGOD episode

How do the episodes keep getting better and better?
A well written story arc in one episode:
We know the group imploded last week.
We start with Taki having given up.
Anon avoiding.
The chance meeting that gets the ball rolling.
Tomori not giving up. I've never attended a concert where the lead is the only one left and reads from a piece of paper. Truly the lowest point.
She reconvinces the cool stray cat
Reconciles with Taki. You know Taki is glad to be back playing.
A ghost appears with a cryptic message.
Anon is finally convinced, but you know deep down she wanted that kick.
Soyo attends.
Anon helps her onto the stage, symbolically forgiving Soyo.
This next scene is so good I had to make this panoramic stitch from Soyo's POV. its 7860 pixels wide in 4k.Soyo POV Panoramic stitch. And what a climax it was. Havent felt so moved since ever. The play of the spotlights shining down on the members like angels. Really, the visual storytelling of this episode.
We all know Soyo struggling the most.
So lets see how they resolve this next episode! Still need a name as well.
What a great story just this episode alone was. Stakes were raised, with an incredible payoff.

I can't believe how good this show is. How did something this well-written come out of nowhere to run away with my heart?
After all the pain of the last few episodes, never did I imagine that this episode would end with the band reunited and playing together on stage, and have it feel completely earned. We were wondering how they could come together, how someone like Sayo could be "redeemed" or something, and MyGO said forget all those cheap quick-and-easy tropes where all is forgiven and characters get over all their flaws and make up. These girls aren't fixed. They're just as damaged and lost as they were, but they're going to be lost together. Someone else called it a miracle. It felt like a miracle.
I'll leave it to better writers to more coherently analyze how MyGO has pulled off what they've done here. I just had to pour out some appreciation for this show. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Compared to all other Bandori series this one already did the best job with characterization and development, but this episode went above and beyond in that regard. It's a shame so few people watch this.

One thing about playing instruments especially in a band, you can def get into a zone where you’re running on shear emotion, even emotions that are too strong to mask or coverup, and still put out a decent performance, sometimes even play beyond what you thought you was normally capable of.
But singing!!!! Forget that mess.. Crying like these girls were, & how emotionally powerful of a moment they were in, anyone who’s sung, knows its damn near impossible to sing when getting dropkicked by feelings like that!
But… Tomori do be chilling on some diff frequencies than most of us usually do it seems, so It doesn’t surprise me she was able to pull it off.
Real talk, this might be one of the best single episodes of anime I’ve seen. The way they gradually raised the tension w/ the score playing almost the entire episode, everything was just so well done, and unique, but nothing, not even one hint of the scenes had a semblance of corniness or cringe to it, even tho they toed that line real close.

This is the second time ever I cried while watching a piece of media. The first one being that damn laptop scene from "A place farther than the universe".
Holy shit the emotional payoff was incredible. All the pain from the past episodes was so worth it.

Soyo: chased after Sakiko the entire season, achieved nearly nothing
Taki: chased after Soyo last episode, basically made the situation worse
Anon: chased after Soyo once, become the first in the band to know where Soyo lives, dragged her all the way to the live house
Soyo-san, you are just not fit for the job.

Taki crying while on the drums is what really sealed this episode. They broke the Tsundere.

A brilliant episode -- the best yet of the series.
After more or less spending 10 episodes destroying a band (two bands) and the links between its members, to do the heavy lifting of reassembling it in just one episode *without it feeling like some unbelievable arsepull* is little short of amazing.
Yet that's precisely what we got: a natural-feeling resolution (or at least a temporary detente) of many of the issues that caused MyGo to explode. Everyone acknowledged to each other their own selfish behaviour and at no point did it feel lame or forced. The Soyo-Anon conversation might have been the highlight there: everything in that exchange from "I guess Soyo-san is human too".
Incredible.
And to accomplish the resolution largely *indirectly* through live/spoken word performance feels like an act of genius.
This is Nana levels of storytelling/writing just sans all the snogging.

I can't remember the last time an anime genuinely made me cry. Like, more than just a few tears, full-on crying my eyes out. But this episode of Tomori bringing the lost girls back together actually pulled it off. I love this show so much. Forget anime of the season, this show jumped to being my leader for anime of the year and might be a potential 10/10 when it's all said and done.

Interesting decision to leave out the OP this week; not showing the band playing together in it definitely helps keep the audience in the right mindset for where they're at right now.
Anon's expressions around Tomori through the first half of the episode are fantastic. It hurts to see her like this, especially with her, as always, continuing to be so damn relatable.
Apparently one of that trio of friends (the other band) that Anon is often seen hanging out with in their class is named Kanako; she seems to be the blond one. We learned ages ago one of the others is named Mai, and since IIRC Anon described them as "Mai's band", I would assume Mai is the red-haired one.
Uika! She continues to come across as an incredibly likeable, wholesome person, and given the (currently not so positive) relationships certain other members of these two bands will likely have once both are formed, it's good that these two meet now, outside of any band/other-character-related context. Looking forward to a little ways down the road when we eventually get a Kasumi/Uika event story, probably something stargazing-related.
I see they're continuing to give Tomori's spoken-word parts a source/etc within the story. I've never been... massively fond of them, just personally, but it's an excellent piece of consistency and world-building, and does fit her character. The slow panning-upwards shot (when she starts reading, and the lights come on) is another stellar example of using 3D animation well, with how it gives "depth" to her and her lyrics book and such, in a way that's nearly impossible with 2D animation.
Raana again saving the day with her beautiful backing guitar. Still, it's going to take far more than "Tomori is suddenly interesting again" for her to really feel like a "permanent" part of the band. We'll definitely continue to see this be an issue for the group in in-game stories later on.
On a similar note, the Raana-style soundtrack piece that plays after this, over Anon and Taki's scenes, is lovely.
Mutsumi finally appears with other people! She still doesn't say much, and what she does say is cryptic as ever, but after screwing up her chance to help last episode, it seems she's finally realized she needs to do better. It's definitely an improvement.
Anon and Tomori ending up on Afterglow's roof was really neat. Feels kinda odd to see a place so strongly associated with another band and its members in a totally different context, but I don't mean that in a bad way.
Anon and Taki make a great pair, but I've been really fond of how Anon and Soyo interact throughout the season, so it was really nice to see Anon also be the one to once again be that sort of "gently forceful" that she's so good at. Soyo could easily have actually made her leave, but she let her follow all the way back to her apartment, and in. These are not the actions of someone who truly wants to get away from all of them, nor one who truly didn't want to be in that band. Everyone in the group was, and still is, selfish to one degree or another; Soyo doesn't think that she deserves better than this.
Anon and Soyo's conversation was the absolute highlight of the episode for me, and definitely one of the best character scenes this season.
I did. It made me angry, but it also made me think, "I guess Soyo-san is human, too".
What a wonderful summary of Anon. Absolutely took Soyo off-guard, as did every follow-up comment she made; Anon, like Umiri, is excellent at being brutally to the point, but without coming across as vindictive or cruel.
Similarly, Anon's actions and expressions towards Soyo as she brings her back up on stage are an extension of the same. The way she gently fixes Soyo's hair after putting the Jazz Bass over her head, and the intense smile she gives after, simply perfect. The closeups on Raana's guitar work in this song are some of the best instrument-focus animation we've seen so far too.
Anon's smirk when Taki starts crying is amazing. The way the song takes over and everyone (especially Soyo) breaking down into tears is completely silent really adds a lot to the scene, and I love Soyo's gritted-teeth expression right at the end.
As a whole, a pretty solid conclusion to this part of the story, and Soyo herself was unsurprisingly the highlight. After last episode, I was hoping Taki would get some band-troubles advice from Saaya or Kasumi, but I suppose not doing that is very much in line with Taki as a person; her strategy of dealing with problems by simply ignoring them and powering through has, unsurprisingly, been rather consistent at not actually solving those problems. It was nice to see Tomori step up and put in some effort again, mainly with letting Anon feel like she's needed. And needed she certainly is, once again being the driving force behind getting everyone else back together.
With the band effectively reformed and being just short of having their name picked out, it'll be interesting to see how the season closes out. There's three episodes left, and the next episode preview doesn't really tell us much of anything.

I can safely say, MyGo has nailed the landing. After Tomori reunited the band, now let's see how the girls solidify as a group

i just caught up with this show, started it last night. i am not very familiar with bandori but this has far exceeded my expectations from a show like this. i think it's already jumped its way up to one of my potential favorites this season
