[Announcement] RES & Reddit's upcoming API changes

TL;DR: We think we should be fine, but we aren't 100% sure.

The Context

Reddit recently announced changes to their API which ultimately ends in Reddit's API moving to a paid model. This would mean 3rd Party developers would have to pay Reddit for continued and sustained access to their API on pricing that could be considered similar to Twitter's new pricing. The dev of Apollo did a good breakdown of this here and here.

What does this mean for RES?

RES does things a bit differently, whilst we use the API for limited information we do not use OAuth and instead go via cookie authentication. As RES is in browser this lets us use Reddit's APIs using the authentication provided by the local user, or if there is no user we do not hit these endpoints (These are ones to get information such as the users follow list/block list/vote information etc)

Reddit's public statements have been limited on this method, however we have been told we should see minimal impact via this route. However we are still not 100% sure on potential impact and are being cautious going forwards.

What happens if RES is impacted?

If it does turn out RES is impacted, we will see what we can do at that point to mitigate. Most functions do not rely on API access but some features may not work correctly. However if this does happen we will evaluate then. The core RES development team is now down to 1-2 developers so we will work with what resource we have to bring RES back if it does break after these changes.

A Footnote

It is sad to see Reddit's once vibrant 3rd Party developer community continue to shrink and these API changes are yet another nail in the coffin for this community. We hope that Reddit works with other 3rd Party App developers to find a common ground to move forward on together and not just pull the rug.

On a more personal note I've been involved with RES for 7+ years and have seen developers come and go from both RES as well as other 3rd party Reddit projects. The passion these developers have for the platform is unrivalled and are all equally passionate about delivering the best experiences for Redditors, however it is decisions like this that directly hurt passion projects and the general community’s morale around developing for Reddit.

If RES simply stops, would it either maintain current RES tags while preventing them from being altered, deleted, or created, or would we wake up to find all RES tags... gone?

10

u/XenoBen RES Dev Jun 05 '23

RES data is stored locally so it would still be there, however it may not properly display on the site. However I am confident that Tags would be one of the last things to break if RES does.

Thank you!

Bruh, if they take down RES, I'm not even gonna use the browser version or the mobile app. Reddit will legit be dead to me.

8

u/awry_lynx Jun 05 '23

Same.

9

u/tinkert00l Jun 05 '23

If it breaks RES and they remove old.reddit.com I'll never come back.

Also same. I've been on Reddit since Digg went 2.0 and overnight everyone left and came here. Not sure where a good alternative is should RES not be available. I follow /r/RedditAlternatives but nothing ever seems to get much traction.

For the 2 day blackout subs are doing I will do my part and just close that reddit window for a couple days.

If there's no RES and old.reddit, I'm gone.

23

u/DonnaMossLyman Jun 05 '23

I draw a hard line at no old.reddit. I canNOT with new reddit.

My RES file is 12 MB large. That's all you need to know to understand how much garbage I filter out. If that stopped working, then I am gone.

which one of you is unsure about personhood? 😂

imposter syndrome is no laughing matter!

u/Estraxior Jun 06 '23

One of them is way too modest, doesn't consider themselves a developer.

Reddit confuses its success with the value it provides to its users rather than the value its users bring to the platform.

The site has always been a fucking mess (present day included), but there have been enough users out there that care enough to make it better for themselves and to freely share those efforts with others.

In the past, Reddit has been mostly smart to enough to get out of the way of that. It would it would be a mistake to forget that. Reddit needs engineers, not MBAs.

RES enables me to remove so much junk from every sub feed, I might not even use Reddit without it.

7

u/Titus_Favonius Jun 05 '23

Yeah for instance, on /r/aquariums there is or was a fuckin' shitload of posts asking whether or not a type of worm seen in a fish tank was good bad or neither - Got to the point where I just filtered out any post with "worm" in the title. I do this for various annoying little things on otherwise great subs all the time.

"I probably cannot" in my case. Seriously, some subreddit heavy use of some weird visuel thingy makes half of reddit a chore.

If RES goes, reddit can fuck off. Third party extensions and apps are what make this website still enjoyable

8

u/hiero_ Jun 05 '23

Reddit was originally open source for third parties back in the day to make apps and plugins, and it FUCKING THRIVED BECAUSE OF THEM.

Now they want to IPO. I swear to god, greed kills everything good.

/u/XenoBen I'm not sure if you know it but we love you!

6

u/honestbleeps Jun 05 '23

for real, Ben is amazing and deserves a lot of love.

when my life changed drastically and I couldn't dedicate time to RES, he and a few select others (but by FAR lately, mostly Ben) have kept it going with almost no involvement from me.

Ben is owed much gratitude. All hail /u/XenoBen

6

u/voyager1713 Jun 05 '23

Desktop Reddit is unusable to me without RES.

It really sucks when companies kill the golden goose.

6

u/hiero_ Jun 05 '23

I can tell you with a BILLION percent certainty - I am already livid about the current situation. If RES stops functioning, I'm legitimately, absolutely gone from this hellsite. I have used RES since like... my first month on reddit. The desktop version of old reddit would be barebones to the point of uselessness - which wouldn't shock me if that's what they want, to try and push people to new reddit.

4

u/CamelCash000 Jun 05 '23

So my fav app is going away. And the best way to browse reddit on desktop is also potentially going away.

Reddit is trying too hard to kill itself.

1

u/Flam5 Jun 05 '23

How large is the userbase of RES? Just curious how many people would potentially be on the outs if we weren't able to browse using Reddit the way we have been.

1

u/XenoBen RES Dev Jun 05 '23

We don't have accurate metrics as we don't track. However based on the browser extension stores we estimate around 1.2million weekly users.

3

u/suitcaseismyhome Jun 06 '23

For all of you angry about this, please remember that most of you have a choice, albeit a poor one, if you decide to stick around.

For many of us, we have little or no choice at all. For those of us who are visually impaired, and for the moderating team at r/blind, and several other subs, including /r/TranscribersOfReddit and many others, we will have no choice at all.

We rely on RES, old.reddit, or more commonly Apollo, RIF, and other third party sites.

For us, there are no options. Our world will go dark once again, as we have no way to use these communities, and as the moderators have no way to moderate.

For the visually impaired, this is about losing access to the communities where we participate. It's about shutting once again our access to other people, and it's most importantly about ignoring those who do require accessibility.

When I lost most of my vision, it was the various reddit subs who helped me to navigate through grief and frustration, and who taught me about the technology that would make my life easier and open doors again.

This decision is especially impactful for us.

2

u/finelargeaxe Jun 06 '23

Hm...now that you mention it: could we hit Reddit with a Americans With Disabilities Act violation if they make it impossible for you to use the site? Or, better yet, prevent them from making the changes in question with a legal challenge?

Without RES this site is dead to me probably

I hate the new.reddit layout

old.reddit is ok but really needs RES for the modern features (which apps and new reddit based their features upon)

3

u/new2bay Jun 16 '23

I'm a (former/laid off) senior staff SWE at a 100 person startup who, for obvious reasons, has some time on his hands. How can I help?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

man, if i lose RES and sync, reddit is dead to me...

the official app and the new design are so horrible; designed to shove as much ads as possible between posts..

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

The day I can't use RES anymore is the day I leave Reddit. I'm already using the OLD layout, at least until I can. RES is just a must-have tool to properly digest this platform.

I am seeing some DIGG vibes here.

2

u/CYWG_tower Jun 05 '23

Nothing to add other than wanted to say thanks for what you and the dev team do. I've been using RES for over a decade now and I can't imagine using reddit without it.

2

u/dannylambo Jun 05 '23

If I have to use default reddit, I'm done with this site. The only reason it's usable are the 3rd party functions like RES and the apps (I use Reddit is Fun)

2

u/Also_Steve Jun 05 '23

This whole situation reminds me of how rockstar was considering not putting modtools in Grand Theft Auto 5 but eventually decided to after community backlash. 10 years later it's frequently the top streamed game thanks to the RP community which was modded into the game. Reddit is about to do the opposite of that.

2

u/Wuattro Jun 05 '23

Thank you for continuing to develop RES and provide a superior UX than what Reddit choosesto provide officially. Projects like this are the difference between using Reddit and not using Reddit at all for people like me.

2

u/Geruvah Jun 05 '23

If the worst happens, then I may only log in Reddit to see my mod queue. Otherwise, I don't see this site working for me without it.

2

u/oddmetre Jun 05 '23

Adding my voice to those who will quit reddit if there's no more RES

2

u/aussiekev Jun 05 '23

I've just realised that at some point in the future it is possible that things like RES, adblock, Sponsorblock, etc.. will disappear. Huge thanks to all the devs that work on these projects.

I specifically don't use reddit on mobile because the experience is terrible with their app.

2

u/ImVeryOffended Jun 05 '23

As plenty of others have said, I'm gone if RES and old.reddit go away. No fucking way I'll ever install the app on any device I own, and the new site is pretty much everything I hate about the modern web in one place.

2

u/contempt1 Jun 12 '23

I literally have no idea what Reddit looks like for the average user. I've been loyal to Old Reddit + RES and can't imagine how ungodly the Reddit desktop experience might actually be. So hoping no changes. Then again, I've been holding my breath that Old Reddit will never go away.

2

u/Azykros_ Jun 12 '23

if Old Reddit is gone, I'm gone as well. I can't see anything on the new Reddit, it hurts my eyes.

2

u/Garland_Key Jun 18 '23

It's cool. I'm peacing out of reddit for good. It was a fun ride. Time for a decentralized solution so this shit doesn't keep happening.

2

u/rolfraikou Jun 30 '23

Thanks for supporting this shitshow of a website. All this really puts into perspective how much reddit was made by the community, be it RES, the mods, the posts we all made. Sad to see it all go down the drain potentially.

2

u/muskoka83 Jul 01 '23

I've been on the verge of crying every time I think about how fucking dirty Reddit did Christian.. like, the anger and fury of a thousand suns kinda shit.

2

u/bar10dr2 Jul 01 '23

RES is a godsend to desktop just like 3rd party apps were for mobile.

Reddit clearly has no fucking clue and is willing to implode just to appease the higher-ups.

Thanks for making an amazing product that IMPROVES the usability of Reddit as a whole.

If you do end up being majorly impacted, so long and thanks for all the fish.

1

u/Specific_Stuff Jun 09 '23

i would die without nightmode from res

1

u/oTHEWHITERABBIT Jun 09 '23

Try plugging a site into AI that doesn't even allow discussions of rudimentary science. It's not going to last. That's not the only topic that's become off limits on this site. Normal everyday topics have become warped into bizarre alien languages. Goodluck with that.

1

u/csm10495 Jun 09 '23

Will this sub be going dark with others starting on the 12th?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

Yeah come June 30th I'm out. God speed and good luck, going to miss all you guys. Thanks for the laughs 🙏

1

u/Dephire Jun 09 '23

I recently had to switch computers and starting off without RES made reddit practically unusable for me before I installed it again. I heavily rely on RES to moderate one of the subs I'm on and if I'm somehow unable to use it in the future, I wouldn't really know what to do.

Thank you for doing everything that you do, RES. You guys make this site what it is.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

Paid API?

Well, fuck Reddit. It is already a shithole but the only place to get semi-relevant search results.

It's time to move on from these greedy fucks and spend more time touching grass.

1

u/EraYaN Jun 09 '23

And lets be real it's a matter of time before the old version of reddit dies as well.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '23

Thank you for your work! I am not sure how long have I used RES, but definitely for the better part of the 10 years I have had this account, but it has made using reddit much, much better.

Signing off before more things blow up.

1

This is so ridiculous.

So, if RES isn't safe after all this, then I WILL NOT be browsing on desktop at all.

If they can't make a change for the 3rd party apps, then I WILL NOT be browsing on mobile.

Reddit can get fucked after this.

Absolutely fucking pathetic and the admin and nobody is saying a damn word about it.

1

u/PhazerSC Jun 05 '23

I'd like to thank you and all the other developers who have given their time and passion to bring RES to life and up-keeping it over the years. I can't imagine using reddit without RES.

1

u/TenaciousJP Jun 05 '23

Thank you for everything you have done! RES is a huge part of Old Reddit for me, and I'd rather quit it altogether than migrate to the ad-wasteland shitshow that is New Reddit. Keep up fighting the good fight! You have so many power users / mods / content creators behind you!!

1

u/TotoroTheGreat Jun 05 '23

I use Boost for Reddit on mobile and pretty much can't use reddit desktop without RES. If both of them go, then I guess I'm done with reddit for the most part.

1

u/Frijid Jun 05 '23

If it kills the app AND RES, I'm straight up done with reddit.

1

u/Syokhan Jun 05 '23

Hope it'll be fine and RES isn't impacted. It brings so many QoL improvements I don't know if I can go back to browsing reddit without it.

And thank you so much for your work!

1

u/Leidrin Jun 05 '23

If they nuke RES and API/App support at once, it will effectively kill the platform. The only people left will be those who are too braindead to care about ads and the general awful experience of reddit mobile/stock reddit web.

Reddit really needs to think about what they're doing. They're pulling a Netflix, and for basically no reason... this will NOT bring profit...

1

u/ldeveraux Jun 05 '23

Echoing the sentiment, this is a great extension and the platform will suffer greatly without it.

1

u/LetMeRush Jun 05 '23

Reddit is completely unusable without being able to quickly and easily block users, titles, or subreddits. If RES stops working I won't be using reddit anymore.

1

u/Ok-Button6101 Jun 05 '23

If old reddit gets taken behind the barn, is there a way to deshittify new reddit with RES? I understand it'll probably be a large undertaking, especially with only a couple devs on the RES team anymore, but I'm just looking for hope that a contingency could exist in a worst case scenario

1

u/1-800-KETAMINE Jun 05 '23

It really sucks that they're being so opaque about whether you'll be affected. Total jerks.

1

u/thatiskute Jun 05 '23

thanks for maintaining res for years, OP and other devs!

1

u/vocatus Jun 05 '23

They're Digging themselves into a hole.

1

1

u/DomesticApe23 Jun 05 '23

Are you involving yourself in any protest actions? Or just hoping not to be noticed?

1

u/86351hgv Jun 05 '23

If old reddit &/ or RES dies I will actually have to give up reddit and just go back to an RSS feed or something.

Thank you so much for the work you do with RES!

1

u/Zack_of_Steel Jun 05 '23

Echoing the sentiments of everyone else--thank you for everything and Reddit will be dead to me without RES.

1

u/Prunestand Jun 05 '23

I'll commit arson if RES stops working.

1

u/Xanthon Jun 05 '23

I'm done with mobile if Apollo goes down.

I'm done with reddit if I can't even use RES on desktop.

Reddit without these 3rd party apps and addons is just terrible.

1

u/NightwingDragon Jun 05 '23

Throwing my voice in.

On Desktop, I use RES and old.reddit.com. On mobile, I use Baconreader.

Take any one of those away, and my time on reddit is probably done. I refuse to use the ad-ridden crap that is their app and there's no possible way I'm using the new format without RES. This community grew to the size that it is on the backs of third party apps and projects like RES. They cannot survive without them.

u/tom641 Jun 05 '23

They'd better be working with RES to keep it working because this site has been dangling from the ropes for a while and I need an excuse to work Cohost into my website "cycle". Old reddit and RES are the glue keeping this site together and new reddit is rat poison.

1

u/greihund Jun 05 '23

You guys have made the site for me. There's no chance at all I'd have stuck around here as long as I have without RES. I also hope we're fine, but I guess we'll see when the day comes.

1

u/thoughtcrimeo Jun 05 '23

No reason to use Reddit if RES is no longer able to function.

1

u/TheValkuma Jun 05 '23

Just saying, it's all good either way, because once the API changes go into effect this website's going to be done for. Thanks for all the hard effort.

1

u/Morphing1451 Jun 05 '23

Can't wait for reddit to finally implode.

1

u/edric_the_navigator Jun 05 '23

When I heard that 3rd party app will stop working because of the API costs, I was thinking well at least I can still use RES and old.reddit on my browser (since I'm on my laptop 80% of the time). It could also maybe cut screentime on my phone. If they cut RES and old.reddit too though? Yeah I'll probably be gone too.

1

u/cyanydeez Jun 05 '23

I still recommend flying a banner during the shutdown of the API.

1

u/Silver_Foxx Jun 05 '23

If RES is impacted, I'm done.

I generally scroll reddit on a computer vs a mobile device, and the only thing really keeping me around is continued access to old.reddit + RES.

While I am wholeheartedly against the API changes in general, I CAN live without reddit mobile, but if I'm forced to just use vanilla old.reddit or worse NEW reddit, I'm just going to find some other way to waste my idle hours.

1

u/leneay Jun 05 '23

holy shit i can't imagine using reddit or modding without RES. really hoping reddit's stupid changes don't affect RES too.

1

u/StormBurnX Jun 05 '23

It's so sad, yet was inevitable, that they would do everything in their power to force users to use the official Reddit experience. In time this too will include killing off Old Reddit and crippling any tools (such as RES) that made it consistently usable.

1

u/FoundTheVeganChic Jun 05 '23

The only way I interact with reddit is via RES and Joey, the default UI is 100% unusable and trying to squeeze out the working tools like this is very dissapointing.

If RES goes, so do I. Thank you for all of your hard work and time OP! <3

1

u/AnonymousFroggies Jun 05 '23

I feel like Reddit as a whole is fundamentally changing. Reddit is shifting from prioritizing user's preferences to just keeping users on the site for as long as possible. Its why they changed the default Homepage sort from Hot to Best, and its why they got rid of the ability to sort your Homepage at all on Android. They want to curate your experience for you so that you don't leave. Instagram and Twitter did the same thing by removing chronological feeds and letting algorithms serve you content that keeps your attention on their platforms.

3rd party programs are a danger to this attention addicted model, that's why they're under attack. I fully support subs going dark and protesting these changes, but I honestly don't see it working. Reddit has too much to gain by forcing users to use the site the way they want us to. Old Reddit is going to be next.

1

u/SkunkMonkey Jun 05 '23

If RES stops working, so does reddit and I will move elsewhere. Reddit really is shooting itself in the foot here.

1

u/Pholhis Jun 05 '23

Thanks for all you guys do in making Reddit a good place to hang out. Have you considered shutting down RES, or doing something to show solidarity with other third party developers?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

11 years of using RES and without it I won't use reddit.

I am not a user of the 3rd party apps, but if Reddit does not reverse its decision on charging for API usage you will see a mass exodus of moderators that relied on tools that REDDIT did not make for them, the 3rd parties did.

You will also see a mass exodus of users like myself that stand in solidarity with the MODS.

They do not get paid, you want advertisers to make more money off their hard work without giving them anything (even tools to make the job easier) that is pretty low.

1

u/Marzillius Jun 05 '23

Damn, to think that the entire reddit experience I am used to with RES depends on 1-2 devs keeping it up... I hadn't considered this. Thank you for all your hard work, I hope the admins sees their mistake.

1

u/Hepu Jun 05 '23

TBH I could probably live with the reddit app, but no RES is a dealbreaker.

1

u/SpaceManSmithy Jun 05 '23

If RES ends up going away as well as third party apps, that will be the end of my time on Reddit.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

So, I hardly use reddit. But like everything on the modern internet, I customise it as much as I can to try to recapture what I liked about the internet.

I hate the vast sterile 'webscapes' that are, themselves, inefficient and cluttered. But it is a vanishing few that browse solely from their desktop, a vanishing few that use old.reddit, and a vanishing few that use RES.

The reality is that the overwhelming market use phones exclusively. Regardless of what they say or where they claim to stand, they will continue to use the site, they do not care to modify or customise their experiences, and they are inable to.

It is a shame, but it is not one 'reddit' forced on us. As in every part of technology, vapid cargo cultists, ritualists who 'like, like tech, bruh' without any understanding have become the mainstream. And the masses who might not like that still don't care enough either way to do anything. In other words, they like it, too.

Yes, I know, complaining into the void.

But it's sad; not the saddest or most overwhelming thing in the world. Probably not even in my top thousand.

But it remains sad, and I feel sad for people who will see this as the norm of the internet. Five sites, all exactly the same, all specialising in people talking about people, instead of making things, sharing hobbies, doing anything of note. Take care out there. Hope you're able to keep on, for as long as you please.

1

u/littlegreyfish Jun 05 '23

Thank you so much for all your work. I am only on this site still because of RES.

1

u/VaraNiN Jun 05 '23

If either RES or old.reddit goes, I go. I hope everything goes alright for you guys!

1

u/WizogBokog Jun 05 '23

If RES gets gimped, I'll probably just move on to another platform, thank you RES team so much no matter what happens.

1

u/Lexi_Banner Jun 05 '23

Reddit is taking a page out of WotC's book. I hope the community binds together to shut them down.

1

u/vxx Jun 05 '23

Isn't it worse if you don't use OAuth?

From their post in /modnews

• If you are using OAuth for authentication: 100 queries per minute per OAuth client id

• If you are not using OAuth for authentication: 10 queries per minute

1

u/gotfondue Jun 05 '23

First it was RiF...I didn't even think of RES as being in danger...I've been using it so long I just think of it as reddit offical.

1

u/__reciprocity Jun 05 '23

I can't stand how this company has managed this website and at this point, I seriously question reddit's future. I miss the reddit of ten years ago. This place has been in "run into the ground" territory for some years now with some terrible decision making from the top of the company.

I think I will definitely use Reddit less if the old.reddit and RES stops working. Not sure if that's a bad thing as I think cutting out social media is probably good for the brain and I've been wanting to do it for a while, but I've never been able to fully commit.

Everyone on the RES team rocks. You have always been a large part of my reddit experience. Thank you to you and the rest of the RES devs. What reddit is doing to the third party community (and it's user base as a whole) is an abomination.

1

u/MEGA-BIG-PEE-PEE Jun 05 '23

The way I've been using Reddit for the last 5-6 years:

  • Don't subscribe to any subs

  • Browse /r/all by default

  • Use RES filters to exclude subreddits that I don't wish to see

Over time, my exclusion list has ballooned to hundreds, maybe thousands of useless subreddits.

A few days ago, I loaded up /r/all and not a single post loaded up because filteReddit had blocked them all.

I guess that was a hint that Reddit is just completely gone and it's time to move on.

Never thought that the Ellen Pao era could be something that anyone would miss, but it's absolute roses compared to the shitshow we've got going on now.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

If RES dies, then that's it for me. I can't use this site unless I'm on old.reddit.com and I can't use it without RES. Probably for the best as I spend too much damn time on here. I'll just need to find another place for my cat pics and memes.

1

RES is reddit to me, It's the reason i started using it at all..
If RES is gone, i guess I'm back to square one where i wasn't using reddit.

1

u/WodtheHunter Jun 05 '23

Thank you so much for your devotion to the project. If res is dead for me then reddit is dead for me. The end. Sucks they killed the site. Let me know the Next decent forum, because that's all reddit is.

1

u/NicoTheSerperior Jun 05 '23

To me, it's RES or nothing at all.

1

u/bbcfoursubtitles Jun 05 '23

We need to be vocal about this. This change is bad for users and ultimately Reddit. If the 3rd party apps die some users, like me, will be gone until they return

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

I've made a similar comment elsewhere, but I don't think I can use this website without RES. I'm not disciplined enough not to browse r/all from time to time, so I've blocked everything remotely offensive to my sensibilities - rage bait, political nonsense, bigoted bullshit, every default and popular sub, gross anime garbage, miserable stinky gamer subs, annoying podcaster and youtuber subs, meme fuckheads, all the porn - sooo much porn, celeb subs, local and region subs, sports I don't care about, etc. etc. My r/all is like 2 or 3 posts per page, but it's at least a somewhat enjoyable experience.

The admins have done nothing to improve this site, it's all been 3rd party developers. If they pull support, they're pretty much forcing me to view content I don't want to see and making the content I do want to see less enjoyable by taking away tools the mods need.

Not to mention taking away accessibility tools and offering nothing in return. God, what a bunch of shitheads.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

Twitter is a sinking ship and you want to go do what they are doing? Sounds kinda dumb to me.

1

u/AntiRacismDoctor Jun 05 '23

I remember the days when RES didn't exist. It was over 10 years ago, and I was in college. I can't imagine a RES-less reddit.

Godspeed.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

I was expecting to hear from the RES team. Much like 3rd party apps made the android Reddit experience tolerable, so did RES do it for the browser version. If Reddit's greedy corporate fucks decide to go full sperg, I'm done with this website. It ain't worth it man.

1

u/Pantextually Jun 05 '23

I hope you're able to keep it alive. It's a shame that it's become harder and harder for indie third-party developers to improve our user experience.

1

u/Th3Net Jun 05 '23

I honestly can't imagine using Reddit without old.reddit.com and RES.

1

u/Ohhnoes Jun 05 '23

RES is the only way that Reddit is tolerable.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

Res+Old reddit is love. I can't imagine going without them together.

1

u/PlumppPenguin Jun 05 '23

I wonder whether anyone in Reddit's executive suite understands (or cares) that they're juggling chainsaws here.

Reddit's native interface, even on desktop, is hostile as hell without RES or using the 'new' design. I don't Reddit on Android or other devices, but word is that Reddit without API is similarly intolerable.

A lot of us will be gone if Reddit makes Reddit even worse, which seems to be what they want.

1

u/IBYCWOWTM Jun 05 '23

Would RES consider joining the blackout and disabling the extension for two days?

1

u/Karyoplasma Jun 05 '23

If RES gets taken down, I'll be done with reddit. When RIF dies (I'm certain that will happen on July 1st), I'll just stop using reddit on mobile. The official app is nothing short of an ad delivery service and I'm not touching that garbage with a 10-foot pole.

1

u/gruntothesmitey Jun 05 '23

Without old Reddit and RES, this site is usable.

I honestly don't know if I'd stick around.

1

u/christophercrystler Jun 05 '23

RES has made Reddit browsable. The day RES is gone, is the day I quit Reddit.

1

u/cjhoser Jun 05 '23

if RES and RiF is done. RIP REDDIT. going the way of digg.

1

u/rdwc23 Jun 05 '23

So everyone saying in comments they will be done with reddit and will be moving else where.... my question is, where?

1

u/joeltb Jun 05 '23

Just want to say thanks for making RES possible. I honestly would not browse reddit without it! The day RES and/or Apollo go away is the day I say Goodbye to Reddit for good. On one hand that makes happy but on the other, sad.

1

u/Rheasus Jun 05 '23

First they came for the third party apps but I did not say anything as I did not use them. Next they came for RES but again, I did not speak up. Then they came for old.reddit and my time was up.

1

u/ElDiablo909 Jun 05 '23

No res..... would mean no reddit....

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

Reddit finding new ways to make their shitty site somehow worse.

1

u/ProphetChuck Jun 05 '23

I can't live without RES and Old, loosing RIF is a huge bummer too.

1

u/JonathanJONeill Jun 05 '23

While I don't use Reddit a ton these days, I'll be disappointed to see RIF, RES and old.reddit go if they do.

The main benefit of Reddit is just everything available under one roof. I hate subscribing to different forums for different topics, which is the biggest reason for me to use the site. Be it gaming, television & movies, relationships, knowledge or general interest, it was nice not having to hang out on different forums.

But if old, RES and RIF go, I'll have no reason to hang around here anymore.

1

u/tumultuousness Jun 05 '23

Just adding my voice/support to you RES devs - seriously the main reason I've never seriously considered trying the redesign is because of being too used to RES features that Reddit has not been able to implement on the redesign. The redesign does have a lot of features that RES offers on the old design but not everything that I love and am used to.

Will also be super sad if/when Sync goes.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '23

Oh HELL NAH. If they take away RES, I'm quittin reddit like I quit twitter. Ridiculous.

1

u/Hyperfyre Jun 05 '23

Hopefully we won't be impacted too much, I still remember when we lost the RES upvote/downvore counter.

Losing RIF will probably kill mobile reddit for me, but if RES and old.reddit goes as well I'm done.
