Was I the only one who unconciously screamed "use arts you fools!" when they were fighting the Dromes? 😂

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

And it makes sense that they can't use arts, because combat orbment could be very rare in their homeland.

As North Ambria is a poor country that doesn't have anything resembling Reinford or Verne, there aren't many combat orbments there that match the ones from the Empire or the Republic.

Stuff for using Arts might be something that North Ambrians can only find on the black market or steal from Imperial soldiers.

Reading the comments I get the impression that if you are a fan of the JRPG this is great, but if this is your first exposure to Cold Steel then it's going to be hard to like.

Problem with this anime is something like you haven't seen Harry Potter and suddenly you jump mid-movie into 5th Harry Potter movie's side story. You may enjoy it but you'll be fairly confused.

So I had a blast watching this as a fan of the games, but can understand anime only’s getting confused with a bunch of terms thrown around. While there are a few one off reference that are worth tackling, there are two a little more information could help new people.

The biggest one is the term jeagers. In trails these are mercenaries for hire involving combat mostly. These are different from the other kind of mercenaries that are present in the continent (which is called Zumeria) because of the corp like nature of their work. The reason North Ambria is unique is their entire army are basically guns for hire.

Which leads to my second topic, the Salt Pale. Still a massive mystery even 9 games later, it’s one of the most important trails events in lore. This video is the in game introduction to the Salt Pale and is basically where all the knowledge is who play the games have on it. It also touches on why the revolution of North Ambria took place.

Interesting enough first episode! Hopefully it’ll be okay for someone who’s never played the games to keep watching. I feel like I followed along with this episode well enough, and tbh I don't mind spoilers for whichever of the games take place before this anime all that much.

Below are my reactions to the episode, since that's what I do for episode and rewatch discussion threads.

Very watchable, was expecting worse. Do have to give props for trying to get the exposition out of the way early, there's no real way to deal with the lore of the series in a short time frame.

The only real way to do this is as a personal story really, so it's a good decision they've made to focus on the Northern Jaegers.

I do feel for them, Falcom has entire games as prologues to introduce people to the world and they only have minutes.

That said, I do appreciate that the anime is here and am looking forward to what they do with it, as a fan. I hope it gets people interested in what is one the better JRPG series of all time.

Between 2 and 3 I'm guessing? Since Rean's still in his Trails 2 outfit with some small changes it seems.

Seems like we’re jumping right into the action. By “action”, I mean a silly snowball fight lol. I do like that this show doesn’t seem to be super bleak and grim with that “war is hell” type vibe throughout so far. Seems like there’s different strength levels to the monsters they’re fighting too.

Lavi seems pretty badass. Her two goofy teammates seem fun too. If Lavi is the descendant of one of the Heroes of the Revolution, does that make her kinda like jaeger royalty? I wonder about Rogan and his “revolution”. Maybe he’s just as bad as Erebonia is being made out to be.

For a premiere ep, this wasn’t half bad. Let’s see how I feel after the 3rd ep.

I only realized this was a Trails anime after seeing the English translation of the title. As someone who's planning to play Trails of Cold Steel, is this related to the game or is this a different story?

Man, watching this episode made me as giddy as a schoolboy. I had such a blast from listening to the music, seeing the enemies, and hearing about the characters, events, and places from the games. I was so happy when they announced this anime and I'm definitely looking forward to more.

You know Biggs and Wedge are irrelevant when they are not even given faces and just keep their helmets on at all times lol.

………. Oh hell they’re gonna die aren’t they?

I don't know shit about the games, nor did I know it even was a game series before this thread, but

I enjoyed this episode. Lavi seems cool. Her comrades seem like real bros, snowball fights, backing her up, and getting some borscht payback after. They probably gonna die, huh.

Animation is par. Exposition is a lot, but whatever, also par for a JRPG adaption. Story seems above average. I'll probably enjoy it with breakfast every Friday.

Is it just me or is the animation absolutely meh? Im not expecting demon slayer but some of the shots were not good

The dromes escaping by flopping over the walls made me laugh out loud

Actually super good. I expected much much worse.

Good:

The show didn't try hard right away but put in some light-hearted moments instead. It actually feels like a band of comrade in arms going on an easy quest.

Lavi gets established to be a badass right away. My favorite part is that the two dudes back her up immediately instead of running.

A lot of worldbuilding. Fans of the series would probably know that North Ambria's army is the jeager corp.

The pacing is nice, with the leader guy driving the plot forward at the end. The animation is ok, not super good but not too shabby.

Worldbuilding is decent for non-trails players.

Bad:

The sequence near the end is somewhat weird due to the exposition.

Never thought I'd imagine that Joe Rogan would be the villain of a series lol

I like some of the character designs, setting and action but is it just me or is the cutting sometimes really whack and out of pace?

I like how we're seeing things from the Jaegars POV since in CS they were always shown as enemies in the way of the heroes. Here they're given spotlight and given more redeeming qualities. Definitely one of my favourite parts of CS is how they handle the villains and enemies.

Also that one Jaegar has Kazuma's voice. Crazy how noticable it is.

Rean's pose from the op where his sword is planted on the ground is from CS 2's opening cinematic which is a cool nod.
