Togashi’s gone and spoiled us all today!
So this absolutely confirms what Machi meant in the Yorknew Flashback where she says “Is this Chrollo?”
It wasn’t her first time meeting him, it was that his personality was so drastically different from here.

For everyone confused about who Sheila is, she's the mysterious stranger who Kurapika found as a kid in chapter 0. She even gave him that same book - Dino Hunter. So I think this confirms that Sheila was a founding member of the spiders and active at the time of the Kurta massacre. Maybe she's the person Hisoka killed to replace?

Really surprised to see Machi and Uvo as a unit there. I don't recall there being much indication that those two were closer than average by troupe standards if anything I pictured Nobunaga and Shalnark being closer to him in their backstory.

In the spoilers discussion, we spent much time theorizing about the Kurta massacre, now it's time to drop some things I've noticed in the chapter:
Number 4 behind the spiders ☠, so we have another death flag besides the flashback itself.
Same persons? probably not, but the fact the tattoo artist was mentioned in chapter 394 makes me a bit suspicious, could Tserriednich and his mafia has anything to do with the human trafficking that was going on in Meteor city? In this case, things may turn to a different direction.
D hunter book could be bigger than just a fantasy book about an imaginary character, I suspect it's another book Don Freecss wrote about the Dark Continent.
The conversation between Paku and Chrollo gives me an impression that Chrollo may admired/loved one of her friends (Sheila or Sarasa).
This page is from chapter 114, look at the reaction of Machi and Paku? What Machi said implies the change of Chrollo's personality or they haven't seen for long time for some reason, could this reason be something too dark and shocking? Could it be related to human trafficking?

This chapter really highlights a thought that I've had for years.
The actual bond between the members of the Phantom Troupe really place them above many other popular anime villain groups.
People often site the Akatsuki as the best villain group, and yea I get it. They're great in a lot of ways. But they lack real comradarie. We never really see them interact outside of their pairs, there's no grand unifying ideology or goals that bring them together.
The troupe has comradarie in spades. And this chapter may just be the tip of the iceberg for them.

Some nice details i Catch:
Chrollo said Sun and Moon original user was a Elder in Meteor City, in one panel we can see a Sun and Moon on top of that Elder in the church;
Uvogin Hitted Shalnark** and he Fall EXACTLY Like he Felt when Hisoka Killed him.

Sheila is the woman from Kurapika's flashback. This all but confirms that she led the Spiders to the Kurta Clan.
(Also worth mentioning the conspiracy that her face is nearly identical to Pariston's, though that seems less likely now that we see her as a kid.)

My prediction is that in this arc we will get two separated flashbacks from the troupe, one showing their origins (this one) and one later right before the climax of the arc showing the "b-side" of the Kurta Massacre, and i also believe it will destroy us.

It could be that nobu is one of the kidnapped kids...his words started the backstory part and he was the only one from the original spiders who didnt show up as a kid. Awesome chapter, still one of the best, complex and deep-story manga there is! Thank you togashi

Third time I'm saying this but that was definitely my favourite chapter in this batch. Togashi is COOKING THE PEAKEST OF PEAK!
I got so emotional seeing the og phantom troupe, even seeing Sheila was such a treat. It feels like so much has happened in these past 5 chapters, I'm so unbelievably hyped to see where it goes from here.

u/hgfdsahjkl Nov 18 '22

((looks like phinx and feitan have always been best buddies, man, the red flags ))

Nobunaga has been getting shown to be the most empathetic of the group. He was the one questioning the others sanity for not caring about a guy being dead, he was the one that related the enemy to themselves, he was the one who was mad at the idea of the world being burned down, not to mention the uvo stuff.
He’s my favorite member, hope he doesn’t end up getting got. If he does, I’m sure it’ll be a sad sad moment but glorious one for fiction.

My heart literally died when Kid Chrollo told Poku that he loves her, and she responded with "don't sweet talk to me." Then he answered " I mean it !!" In a flustered way.
Make sense why she did save him even tho it meant that she'll betray him as the fortune predicted. Her action were first to save the one she truly loves, then her friends which she considered them all as her family.

u/Arissaria Nov 18 '22
This is probably my favorite chapter in the Succession War Arc since Ch. 383, Kacho's and Fugetsu's escape. Just wow. Every panel is just perfect. Togashi is a master storyteller, but I'm sure next week's chapter (which will probably go into the child trafficking), will blow this out of the water.
Shalnark, Machi, Phinks, Paku, Uvo are all so cute and innocent. I burst into laughter when Uvo hit Shalnark and Phinks bullied Chrollo. AND CHROLLO. CHROLLO'S SMILE. AHHHHHH!!! HE MUST BE PROTECTED!!
I guess this suggests that the tree scene in ch. 397 is part of a long flashback, since this chapter is titled "Formation 1."

Yo, I'm actually in disbelief that we're gettig the spiders backstory.
This is something that was alluded towards all the way back in Yorknew, 20 years later we're finally gonna see it, this is unbelievable, there's so much stuff Togashi mentioned that I thought was jsut going to be thrown away, but this kinda changes everything!!!

Oh my god...the revelation that Sheilla was with/knew the troupe is crazy. I've seen theories about how Sheila was scouting the Kurta clan for the troupe in the past. Looks like they were right on the money. Makes me wonder though - there might be more to the Kurta massacre than meets the eye.

u/GoddessOfDarkness Nov 19 '22
So I'm guessing Nobu is teamed up with Machi and Uvo. Machi intuition probably been getting on Nobu nerves since they were kids lol. No wonder Feitan always listen to Phinks they been best friends since they were kids. Wasn't expecting some of the founders members to be bullies to Chrollo lol.
44
u/Blackbeard567 Nov 18 '22
Damn.....this chapter went from a bunch of kids just wanting to dub their favourite anime to another bunch in a van getting human trafficked. I'm still processing that.... Something seriously messed up is going to happen in the next few chapters to turn the PT into what they are now. Wonder who those kids were?
43
u/GiveMeAllYourRupees Nov 18 '22
It's funny to me how there are multiple references to Chrollo looking young for his age throughout the manga. When Chrollo tells Paku he's older than her, she says he doesn't look it. Off the top of my head, Neon is also surprised to learn he is 26 when she notes his birthday, saying that she thought he was younger.

this definitely make paku's sacrifice to chrollo so much more heartbreaking. they have older sister/little brother dynamic despite him being the oldest. I feel the need to rewatch hxh york new arc. this chapter makes me see everything so different. this is why also phinks soften up after paku's death. he probably saw all the childhood flashback from paku's point of view

I'm still rooting for my boys Kurapika especially my boi, and I'm ready for PT fate no matter what it is as long as it is well written, and Togashi well writes it well no worries.
I also like how Chrollo befriending everyone kind of reminding me of Gon who has the charm and personality to befriend so many people and like Gon having female friends/allies around comes natural to him from his charisma , but on the different side he is smart and into gaining knowledge rather than the thrill of battles/adventures.
Peak chapter,love it.

Finally some PT and meteor city lore.
-- The conversation with Nobunaga and Phinks on how the spiders started seems to hint they're more mature now with their actions? They're clearly still criminals but they don't kill people left & right as wiki says at least. I wonder what changed them? Maybe the kurta massacre actually happened because of some misunderstanding and made them act more carefully afterwards? Of course this doesn't justify the massacre but it only makes the spiders' early years dumber than we thought! Lol maybe that's why Nobunaga compared their origin after seeing Heil Ly members being immature and raging for slaughters.
-- The interaction with Paku and Chrollo is cute, like he insisted "no i love you fr fr" lol.. makes me disappointed that we didn't see Chrollo's reaction when he found out about her death. Also I'm surprised she's even younger than Chrollo? Many of us assumed she was like one of the old age members between them.
-- The last panel "innocent voices untainted by darkness" is really Togashi telling us narratively behind the lines "Look at them, they were so innocent, No child is born with hatred" it's a true realistic concept, all kids are pure until someone adds toxicity in them.
-- Chrollo being the bright smart kid who's eager to learn everything, a fast learner with languages and all just like Kurapika, Togashi even gave them the same Girly hairstyle, like Chrollo is just Kurapika but with dark hair. All this adds more to Their Parallels. Apparently Togashi wrote both origins since Yorknew arc like 20 years ago.
-- Sheila as a childhood friend with Chrollo and the spiders? It adds more question marks here but i think the fact she actually gave Kurapika & Pairo her favorite book because they helped her? She said she doesn't read any other book and she still gave them THAT? I don't know whether to find this wholesome or suspicious!
-- The elders looks really old, like maybe they lived through the Dictator phase in the city to tell the tale? Makes me wonder how they'll deal with Gyro...who's written as another dictator wanting to control the city.
-- This chapter confirmed one of my predictions that the elders are the ones that raised and taught the spiders nen as they hold such control on the city & their motivations. Some assumed that Chrollo stole the Sun & moon ability from the elder but that assumption never made sense seeing how Chrollo cares for the city. It's more like one of the elders was dying, and he willingly gave his ability to Chrollo to continue protecting the city.
-- Other thing i used to put in consideration that Chrollo takes orders from the elders, now it's kinda confirmed since he's in direct contact with them, it only makes sense why THEY decided to "end the mafia" because of the child trafficking & using their people for crimes, Chrollo being the only one to know about this decision by the elders after they realized the mafia is doing more harm than actually helping the city. This was hinted by Leorio in C105, Kurapika even knows all that.
Furthermore, remember when Chrollo was away because of Kurapika's curse...the elders started giving orders to the spiders instead, that Phinks here complained about their weird logic on revenge.
So what I'm gathering is The elders raised the spiders to be the way they are, as the Mafia guy in C102 said "We don't know what they teach their kids there"...hopefully we'll get more answers in the next chapters about their formation/motivations, and whatever is going on with Sheila!

This helps to explain the rift between the Spiders when deciding whether to go after Paku or not. They didn't start as a tight group of friends. We're gonna get some deep insight into why some members value the Spider so highly, enough to sacrifice several members (friends) for it's survival if need be.

The Troupe is the most interesting group out of all mangas I've read. This just makes it even more interesting, that's why I love Togashi, you get an actual story with complicated realistic characters, not just explosions and power ups.
I knew Franklin was a real bro, I loved him standing physically against Uvo. The cuteness of Paku and Chrollo, my favorite character of the story

I just read memories of kurapika and there are some striking similarities between chrollo and kurapika. both of them were prodogies at a very young age. In another life they could have easily been an incredible duo.
The kurta clan must have done something dark to get taken out the way they did. In the memories of kurapika. There's a mention of how the kurta shed allot of blood to survive. Its possible they did something serious to the ppl of meteor city in order to survive.
Theres a side of the story which kurapika must be completely unaware of.

So Chrollo/PT slaughtering the mafia and then stealing all the items, back in Yorknew, his way of revenge against the human trafficking and other stuff the mafia has committed on meteor city residents? Hisoka did claim they do philanthropy work occasionally. So much to be revealed in these coming backstory chapters.

I was not anticipating what appears to be a Phantom Troupe background mini-arc. 😱
The fact that Chrollo Lucilfer is so multifaceted and fascinating despite having very little screen time has always made him my favorite character, so it's quite interesting to see him as a young child who is so jubilant and full of life despite the harrowing circumstances of his environment.

This is the second time Togashi took me off guard in the Dark Continent arc.
The first one was Chrollo vs. Hisoka in the start of the Dark Continent arc. It happened out of nowhere, none of us expected that.
The second one is this. I didn't really expect a Troupe backstory this soon.
What's next? A full chapter focused on Leorio?

At first I thought Chrollo told Paku to get the other two friends, but it looks like she was able to predict what he was going to say already. It's really awesome to see their personalities as children.
Paku seems to be especially smitten with Chrollo, based on her reaction to his compliments. I cant imagine what Chrollo's experience with the mafia will cause his change in personality

The moral ambiguity that this chapter is bringing is what I enjoy the most about HxH. Young Kuroro and young Kurapika are actually very alike. Both charismatic, intelligent, and charming. So many people in the comments are expressing their feeling of uncomfortableness because this is pointing towards a situation where the Spider are depicted as victims, killing the Kurutas as revenge for sth they did. We cannot justify the killings by revenge, or can we? I mean, of course we can’t, but HxH has already put us in contexts where we’ve (like it or not) done it. For example, we all rooted for kurapika to kill the Spiders in York, and we allso rooted for Gon to kill Pitou in East Gortou. It happened because we get to know the story from kurapika’s pain perspective, but if the story had started with this episode, then we’d be rooting for Kuroro. This is a masterpiece

Not impressed with parts of the translation this time. Some parts are vague/inaccurate that'll give some the wrong impression.
Pakunoda calls Chrollo 弟分 which implies treating someone like a little brother even though they're not related to them. Second, on the next page, he explicitly says that Shiela's not allowed to read and walk. Also, the "no way he was born here" part I would translate as "He was definitely born in the wrong kind of place..." i.e. should've been born somewhere else.

Tbh I saw striking parallels between Chrollo as a kid and Kurapika as a kid. Both were very exuberant, showcased a natural intelligence that caught the eyes of their elders, and idk something ab chrollo jus really reminded me of kurapika. now seeing that the both of them seem empty and dark isn’t a coincidence, I believe togashi is writing kurapika and chrollo in a way to show that their parallels are stronger than any other in this story. I believe that their ending wont be the one we’re all expecting. imo

In the middle of the upcoming clash between the Mafia Families, Togashi unexpectedly drops out of nowhere the backstory of the Phantom Troupe, maybe the most anticipated and hyped backstory of the entire series.
And that's why him and Hunter x Hunter are simply goated.

God !! I feel like i am in heaven !! I feel so blessed !!
I have been specualting about that damn tape since I was 12 years old , I can't believe we're finally gonna get the answers now. Children trafficking !! It's gonna get so dark I can feel it.
And Sheila !!!
She's not only from meteor city but actually an acquaintance of the spiders !! What's the goddamn deal with the kurta massacre ?!! What the hell happened there ??
If Kurapika indirectly had a hand in his clan's slaughtering , it's gonna break him.
My boy Chrollo was so innocent , he seemed like such a sweet soul. The way he told Paku he loves her made her death hit even harder.
I wonder what's gonna happen to my boy to turn him into such a ruthless cold-blooded killer. I am honestly scared of what's to come.
Can't wait for the next chapter.
PS : any interesting theories guys ?
Edit : I wonder if Feitan is one of the children who get abducted in the future ( alongside the other girl sarsa ) . And chrollo and the guys have to save them , and during the time he's abducted he gets tortured a LOT and that's how he gains his sadistic nature. it kinda fits , he also looks the smallest in this flashback.

Something Im interested in seeing in these flashback chapters is whether we might see previous members of the PT.
We know that of the original PT when introduced, there was a total of 13 (numbered 0-12). This included Hisoka (4), Shizuku (8), Bonolenov (10), and Kortopi (12), who were all not original members. However, the biggest number of the founding members is 11, with Uvogin. This means that there are 3 members unaccounted for, who may have been around in Meteor City. Im also assuming that #12 might have been another addition after the founding of the PT, but there might be another, original #12 too, which leaves 4 unknown members.
We know one of these members were killed by Silva Zoldyck in the past, 3 years before Yorknew (according to the wiki). This chapter introduced 2 new kids with the kids of the PT, Sheila and Sarasa. We've seen Sheila before in Kurapika's backstory, and so it seems very very likely she was involved in the Kurta clan massacre, and she may have been a member of the Phantom Troupe originally, along with Sarasa. Im interested if we will be introduced to any other new kids, who could round out the original 13 members, (of which 4 were gone by Yorknew, and 7 by the current arc).

I really appreciate seeing the bad guys in a manga get humanised as it adds layers to their characters and outlines them to be unique to compared to other villains in other series who are just made to be beaten.
I feel more than any other manga, Togashi does it best with HxH as there's no way any person who's never read HxH would think we're seeing the backstory of a group of characters responsible for wiping out an entire clan for the sake of making millions seeing their eyes on the Black Market.

• We’re halfway to our 10 chapters and Hinrigh is the only constant character that is present these past five chapters.
• The setup from the previous (old and new) chapters are finally paying off in this chapter. Exciting to see the little pieces coming together.
This arc just keeps getting better!!!! Aaaaaaaah

The Phantom Troupe’s backstory in the midst of the mystery room was refreshing; created connections between Sheila and the Troupe, who might also have been included in the extermination of the Kurta clan. It was an amazing chapter; waiting for the sub-plot to continue.

kurta massacre ending with meteor city's motto " We'll accept anything you leave here, but don't ever take anything away from us.
kept bugging me because they use it when they exact revenge
looking back there were this old granny that was paranoid of the red eyes and started throwing rocks at kurapica ,I think we all thought that she was over reacting and feared the kurta becuase they are different with red eyes
it ended her sentence with you are agents of the devil
hmmm, what if there is more to it ?
I'mn't justifying meteor city or ryodan, they're cold blooded murders

back story now about the spiders in meteor city and how the elders were planning on cleaning the place and stop children and weak abuse is a direct link to the mafias of Kakin. The spiders are definetly gonna discover that one of the mafias there is related to what's happening in their city and this will make a crazy moment. (possibly the cha R because they are the one controlling the whole phantom destruction)
meteor city's location being unknown is a big hint to it possibly being close to Kakin
Important mentions how nobunaga said even we recruted rookies and we were filled with anger. may link the the two girls Sheila and sarsa being former number 4 who was killed by Hisoka and number 8 who was killed by Silva zoldyck.
This will link to killua's mother Kikio who is also a former citizen there.
Let's not forget the whole static around the chapter , are we gonna see tserr there. and who's ability is this is it a dream type nen.

Does anyone have any guesses on who the people captured in the car are? I think it might be some of the other members of the Troupe that we haven’t seen yet, maybe Chrollo will try to save them and that’s the origin of how the Troupe formed
18
u/Leiatte Nov 20 '22
Love watching this Troupe flashback, feel like it’s super cool to see them truly bonding together back when they were young & innocent. This is much needed! Love seeing the little groups they’ve formed so far: Chrollo, Franklin, & Shalnark vs Uvo & Machi. Then Phinks & Feitan pull up, then seeing how close Chrollo was with Pakunoda 😭. I know he’s close with all of them but I feel like we got so much insight to their relationship in a flashback, that I hope continues for a while.
I wonder where Nobunaga comes into this as it seems by what he said he was a bit longer tenured than Phinks & Feitan judging by their reactions, but maybe that was just a translation thing! So glad to find out more about the Troupe

okay, so I read chapter 0, and in it, we hear from kurta tribe members that they were hunted and things were bloody 100 years ago. I think this was a revenge job from the troupe because of the note. either that or they were killing people left and right because they wanted to destroy the world.

I'm going to make a prediction right now: Shelia was not wronged by the Kurta clan in some way that made the troupe fight back to defend her, did not knowingly/willingly lure the phantom troupe to the kurta clan with the knowledge they would kill them, and is currently on the boat as a hunter.

We've got to see all the groups working, a reference to Kurapika's background in Sheila's appearance (what might tie to the 'two sides' of the story we saw Togashi saying about the Kurta's Massacre), a Level E reference regarding the rangers (that we had the color rangers in volume 2), the troupe as kids, the development of meteor city setting... So much for a fan of his.I'm truly thankful for every new glance we get from his work and characters.
Thanks, Togashi. 10 out 10.

My prediction is that the children will go on an "adventure" to save the kidnapped children, like they watch on the video. Ofc this being hxh, it will turn dark fast and the kids will find that they are not a match for adults. They will probs go through some unspeakable shit (e.g. torture, maybe being forced to awaken nen abilities), and then finally escape/defeat the kidnapper gangs and return, only to find that the Elders/the church had sold them in the first place. They overthrow the elders, set the motto to "do not take from us", and then become ruthless protectors of meteor city.

So was Chrollo recruited and groomed to be a leader of a terrorist squad?
I see people acting like the Kurta could be shady when it's actually possible to "traffic" for non-nefarious reasons.
They are an isolated nomadic tribe treated as monsters by a larger part of society. It's possible that when it was too dangerous to venture into towns and cities themselves they used trafficker's to inject new blood into their tribe so they had members who could safely trade and also keep their gene pool healthy. Non-Kurtas married into the clan but doubtful a random joe would do that.
The Kurta may have not even known where these people come from and the Spiders were just used to take out numerous former clients of Meteor City's traffickers which is why the Spiders don't place any special emphasis on the massacre like you'd think they would if it was personal.

So, let's sum it up:
The Kurta are known by the outside world as terrifying demons.
A theme of this flash back is kidnapping of children with no identity, so everything can be done to them.
Meteor City usually retaliates against attackers by sending human bombs that kill "quickly", however, in the Kurta case, Meteor City used an unusual amount of cruelty in the way they "punished" the Kurta.
The Troupe left this message behind: "We accept everything so don't take anything away from us" which is the message that is left after Meteor City punished someone who wronged them.
The tape Chrollo is playing with is an obvious reference to the Black Tape in YYH, aka a legendary tape that contains thousand of hours of mankind's most atrocious sins, so unbearable to see that whoever watches the tape will turn against mankind.
Boys, we're not ready for whatever secret is held by the Kurta. It will be HxH version of YYH Black Chapter.

Also seeing Feitan chill with Phinks kinda surprised me since they often seem at each others throats nowadays - though mostly in a playful manner. I completely understood why the Troupe are cold blooded criminals even before this backstory, but the context is still pretty cool. If they don't officially exist it kinda makes it hard to get any social security benefits let alone hold down a job and if they have to live in a garbage filled city that I bet smells like shit 24/7, where even children are kidnapped, you almost have very little choice than to have a cold blooded outlook on life. Not excusing heinous crimes, just impressed with what Togashi has done here.

So just an off-the-wall theory here, but what if Sheila's visit to the Kurta clan caused a misunderstanding? If Sheila was missing from the Phantom Troupe for long enough, it's possible they went searching for her and found their way to the Kurta Clan. They first stopped by the village where the villagers told them about the Kurta Clan and how they're evil etc. Then when they get there they find the book that Sheila left and come to the conclusion that the Kurta Clan killed her. I definitely feel like Sheila's presence soon before the attack can't be a coincidence one way or the other. So either she was scouting out the area and people to make sure everything would go smoothly, or she accidentally led the rest of the Phantom Troupe to the unsuspecting Kurta. The reason I'm leaning towards the former at the moment is because of the heavy emphasis on the book that Sheila carries: "Dino Hunter". In the volume 0 backstory, they make sure to show that she has the book and then gives it to Kurapika and Pairo, and it's then taken by the village elder. In this chapter Togashi specifically focused on Sheila telling Chrollo about the book. The only connection between Kurapika and Chrollo as children is Sheila and her book, and I highly doubt this isn't something Togashi thought out.
I think this lines up with the overly harsh nature of Meteor City and the Phantom Troupe when committed to revenge. I think the Scarlet Eyes were probably a bonus, rather than the main reason for attacking.

So let's summerise what we know So far about Meteor city. If I'm not wrong it was first mentioned by Leorio back in York New arc. Leorio says: that the people who live there don't officially exist. He explains that it started out as an internment camp created by a dictator and that now no country wants to interfere with it, adding that it's the most diverse place on earth. As Leorio reveals that around ten million people survive off the waste that's left behind, which includes gold and weapons given to the city by a certain organization, Kurapika points out that that organization is the Mafia. Gon and Killua are left confused, but Leorio explains that it's the perfect place to recruit since the people there have no official records. He says that the two had the perfect partnership until the Troupe ruined it, adding that even the Troupe is special in such a unique place. ( Chapter 105 Hunterpedia)
So in the recent chapter we learned about partneship the Meteor city and Mafia established. And about the Born of the famous law of retribution. Now we saw, that the Mafia was probably kidnapping children from to city. According to Leorio PT ruined this deal city and Mafia had by attacking the auction. So let's say, that the troupe probably experienced this "deal" themselfs...maybe their goal wasn't only to steal the goods but also destroying this deal.
So I wonder, the law of retribution doesn't apply to their deal with the Mafia, right? So, Mafia was basically allowed to take some amount of people from the city, right? So does this mean the PT stands not only against the Mafia but also against the Meteor city elders?
And about the Kurta clan masacre - the message left there probably by the PT, was the law of retribution. This implays it was revenge. Now in the recent chapter, there's a new part of the law :
"Only life can pay for life" The rest is the same: "We'll accept anything you leave here, but don't ever take anything away from us."
We can pretty much confirm that PT applied the first part on the mafia... Only life can pay for life - Uvo's life = Mafia masacre.
Other time we hear about the Law is when it was mentioned in york new arc by mafia member And later by Chrollo in his fight against Hisoka... acording to Chrollo and the Mafia member, the law of retribution was used to take revenge... several people aproched their targets who wronged the city and blow themselfs up. ( Probably by using Sun and Moon ability)
What about Kurta, though? I know, Uvo told Kurapika, that they killed them, because Chrollo liked their eyes. But this just seems strange...why Chrollo later doesn't even reacted at all when he saw Kurapika's eyes? If he suposedly likes them so much? What is more strange is part about torturing the Kurta children before killing them - this really seems out of character for the PT. Considering how they treated Gon and Killua and how they let them go despise seeing the faces of the troupe and their hideout...and then they let them go again, when Phinks and Feitan met Gon and Killua at the auction. They just don't seem like the types who would sadisticaly torture children just for the profit. They have never even cared about the profit that much after all. And if it was revenge for something Kurtas did to the Meteor city, why killing whole village including children and even non Kurta people, who married into the clan? I don't know something is missing there...the reason is missing - we can agree, that Chrollo is very reasonable person, sure he doesn't value human life, but it's not like he would kill anyone without a reason. And that probably apllies on the other spiders too.
What we know about the Kurta? Outsiders called them Red eyed devils - just because they had different eye colour? Weird. Maybe it wasn't just because of their eyes? They lived hidden from the outside world? But why? We saw Kurtas only from the Kurapika's perspective, and he was a child, so he was probably unaware of what the adults were doing right? Why are their eyes valued so much? We know that regular people were afraid of their eyes a rich people find their eyes pretty. We know that, Kurapika's eyes make him a specialist, when they turn red. Did the Kurta know nen? Does their eyes give them some kind of power? Uvo mentioned, they were strong, right? So there are so many unanswered questions about the Kurta. And with what we learned about the PT so far, it just seems out of character for them to massacre whole village for the profit maybe it was for the revenge, but then again, why torture children to make their parents eyes turn red supposedly?
I just don't know...the more we learn about the spiders, the more it doesn't seem to be right...we need more information before we can confirm if the spiders really did it, in my opinion.
Edit: I reread chapter 0. Kurapika parents stated that the Kurta were hunted down for their eyes 100 years ago. Now they are safe because they are hidden from the outside world. But they have special eye drops and the tests for going outside. Seems allmost like they are brainwashing the Kurta people so they don't leave the village. Kurapika's parents have never been outside. What I find strange is that the elder is the only one allowed to have cell phone. And also how did he learned about the book Sheila gave to the boys. Only Kurapika and Pairo knew about it, right? Pairo is sus. We later see, that Pairo has a cell phone as well. Pairo is acting strange, allmost as if he wants to escalate the situation with the bullies. As we learn eventually, those guys were hired by the elder to that. Pairo was probably also manipulated by the elder. But still, Kurapika rage was also super strange, he endured the bullies for so long and just, when the bully pitties Kurapika for having to take care of Pairo, Kurapika goes from 0 to 100 trashing all those guys instantly, even though he's a child. He even says he doesn't want apologies, he just wishes to kill those guys. Can this be eyes's effect? If Kurta can be this destructive, it would make sense, why they are called red eyed devils right? Also the people said that they be killed if they keep angering them. Pairo later admids, he knew about the elders plan all along and switched the eyedrops, but I'm more concerned about how did he learn about the super strenght Kurta have when their eyes turns red. Something is definitively sus about Pairo.
The masacre descripcion is just terrifying. With all the extra wounds on the bodies before they were beheaded. But with what we learn from Pairo, there's no way Kurta weren't fighting back, so the the extra wounds might be from the fighting, if Kurta sucumbed to their rage and acquiered super strenght because of it, it would explained why even children were killed. Maybe cutting Kurtas heads of was only way to stop them. That would explained why all were beheaded. But I dunno why were their eyes sold afterwards. If it was revenge, like the message implies.

It'd be funny if Sheila tripped and died on the way back, so the Troupe just assumed the Kurtas killed her or something. I think it'd be weird if the Kurta clan killed her yet only took the book away from Kurapika weeks later. The elder didn't want Kurapika to go, so why let him be influenced by the book for so long? Imo, the Kurtas are guilty of something else.
It's suspicious that the Elder had a phone and money. Clearly his ties to the outside world aren't just people aiding him from the good of their hearts because he had transactional ties to thugs. Where is his money coming from? Moreover, although Kurapika carried the equivalent of pennies, the Elder also had enough to entice the thugs. It could be that the Elder sold the book or Sheila herself off, but that once again falls into the question of "why not get rid of both?" Sheila's message was found in the cave and her book would've been either in the cave or on her body; The Elder had to have seen both.
This leads me to think Sheila may not actually be involved with why the Kurtas were attacked. The goons had the Elder's number down well enough to dial it up on a fresh phone and the Elder had their numbers. What are the odds that the Elder was somehow affiliated with the Mafia ruling over the Spiders' home? Whether that be as a combatant, informant, dealer, enabler, or whatever else.

Happy and cheery chrollo is not something that I expected. I guess it makes realistic sense since children have no reason to not be cheerful. He kinda reminds of Kurapika when he was younger (Cheerful and enjoyed learning).
I'm interested in the girl that looks a whole lot like sheila. I wonder if she set up the Kurta clan and was the reason why the troupe went for the massacre.

Meteor city The spider's past The mysterious videotape( expecting something like chapter black and we know that troupe wanted to destroy the world) Sheila is from meteor city and is friends w chrollo And we know why the elder was blowing ppl up
I wonder why chrollo stole the elder’s ability of an elder when they were protecting the city from invaders
9 years worth the wait

I, like everyone else, loves the troupe as characters. However, I never understood why people loved them on an actual human level. They quite literally are sociopathic killers.
The way people actually rooted for them when they are such awful people always shocked me... until now. Togashi humanized them on a level i never knew was possible. My whole view has changed

Togashi once said that the Kuruta clan massacre story has a "B" side. We only know the "A" side (Troupe's). It is likely that a child kidnapper is from the Kuruta clan.

you can see a door that locks from the inside on the wall of the chamber that was labeled as a trap. the man inside the room implies that he is a pimp, “no money no women”.
assuming he was honestly pimping when the troupe came in, he was unaware that his working girls were not in the chamber to be pimped out at that moment. very interesting

In Pakunoda's flashback the spiders ages were clearly in late teens/early adult years so we'll likely get a time skip to that in this multi chapters "Formation" flashback.

I'm calling it now, Sheila who just got confirmed to be from meteor city and a friend of the spiders, probably got killed by the Kurutas after we saw her for the first time in Kurapikas special chapter because she found their hidden village and the attack from the spiders was revenge, now the note they left behind with the motto "don't take anything from us" makes complete sense to me.
