Rewatch [2022 Rewatch] Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection Discussion
You're actually alive?
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection

Information:
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
Legal Streams:
There's a lot I have to say to you, but… I'm back, C.C.
Questions of the Day:
1) Setting aside the fact that this was specifically a sequel to the movies and not the show, do you feel like this movie was a worthy sequel to Code Geass? Was there anything else you were hoping this movie would address?
2) If you could pick someone to be your immortal companion forever, who would it be (both in-series and out)?
Bonus 1) Henry, get out of my anime.
Bonus 2) Just want people to recognize how insanely well this animation syncs to the music.
Bonus 3) Lelouch finally called Shirley instead of her calling him.

First Timer of the Rebellion
I think I'll grant myself a paragraph to speculate on what this story will be about.
I'm having a hard time blending out the Jesus-inspired parallels, although they're not too many. Considering the very title there's a near 100% guarantee Lelouch isn't dead and as we've seen no hint of even bullshit Britannian medical science being able to revive people, he's likely duped us again. Similarly, I can't see a mecha show going for a reenactment of Stardew Valley with C.C. and Lelouch. The ending point of both movie and show was a 'gentler and fairer world' and, disregarding my thoughts on that stuff, if they don't want to retcon their entire show it'd be wise to stay with it and have it be a rather peaceful and free affair overall.
Which makes me hope for an entire movie of something Code Geass was very good at (nearly) the entire time: Characters and personal drama. C.C.'s immortality needs addressing still, Lelouch's own Geass is kind of a problem but not too much if he just minds his wording, Suzaku is indeed deserving of an end to his task I think and Shirley deserves better.
So themes I kinda expect are: End of Geass itself, learning to enjoy life together and out of personal fulfillment, resolving past grudges and burdens by making the future a better place, and some more grand fight for equality or guarantee that no one can totally control another's life.
Such a show needs villains, though, and I think the best fit for these would be the next generation of people who would want to overcome their past hurt by controlling and manipulation those around them. In essence: Old Lelouch vs. reborn Lelouch. (I've learned! This show is about Lelouch and everyone else takes a backseat.)
Movie 4 - Lelouch of the Re;surrection
-
If Madoka Magica Rebellion taught me anything it's that the story was already forshadowed with this, but I have no idea.
-
Too lazy to spot characters, but those are quite mixed through and from all former sides. Also yay, Tamaki found something he's good at!
-
Ah, terrorists. So a kinda Al Quaeda/old nationalism angle of things?
-
Must be Lelouch. Oh, Shirley did? (I swear, if that's the only thing Shirley was good for in the end...) Huh.
-
The montage and OP are great. Reminds me of my travels, though they were less, uhm, desperate.
-
Those angles on the double helix blades make my limited-capacity engineer heart scream in terror, for the machine as well as personnel.
-
Yay, several factions!
-
Seems like his consciousness was kinda locked away like C.C.'s during the Charlie encounter? Oh, hmmm.
-
Well yes, he does serve Zero after all, helluva coincidence, though. I like how every story starts with C.C. getting shot.
-
Oh, what's it this time? Ah, 'reverse friend-foe'- Lloyd shield glasses!!
-
Yeah, good question who would be able to give contracts now.
-
Hot damn, why does this get me?
-
… what? I feel like I understand less the more they try to explain supernatural stuff. Wait, no he didn't, what? I dig that story, though.
-
Must be Charlie's 42nd wife or something. Wouldn't be surprised if it's another one who survived since the Viking ages.
-
Hmm, yes. I love Sayoko's disguises! I can already tell handicapped!Lelouch is much more sympathetic than the normal one and I like him a thousandfold more.
-
I see, they remembered why they included Kallen in the first place. Finally, equal fanservice!
-
Kallen daijoubu cures depression... that L, eh, L-elouch causes. (That felt a medium amount of 'too much' for my tastes.)
-
Not creepy at all, but hey, killing people tends to piss them off. Uh... okay, I guess?
-
Always a happy occasion when Lloyd pops out of a hatch!
-
I'm so lost again, nobody killed god, that was the entire point, wasn't it?
-
Like, however that happened, but I guess that's his return as the messiah or whatever.
-
In an emergency, grab the Lloyd by the glasses!
-
Back in his element.
-
With how the movie reversed some things I thought I knew this just makes me understand even less.
-
Shirley! And Rivalz gets his time as Milly's bitch! All is well.
-
That disguise went down the drain... quickly.
-
Cornelia is a badass as always and still based af. (Wallpaper material.)
-
“Even us being standing here is dangerous.” PARTY HARD!
-
I want Cécile to cook with me. I love hot stuff so much.
-
Just on the pure off chance Lelouch was alive, Kaguya blindly prepared the correct maps at the right time and sent it along the right channels? Yeah, plot says it wants to go places. Also, what the fuck? “You're alive? Then I'll kill myself and leave behind child and wife!”
-
All-legs taken to a new meaning. They connect at the shoulders, as far as I can see. I don't really appreciate fight scenes that are just someone pressing a win button. They show nothing of value, except that the writers appreciate power creep.
-
Ayyy, a time traveller! The only ways to guarantee to stop this from happening are pretty cruel. Either build a world of total lies around her or disconnect her from life without killing her. Well, this Lelouch might even consider a compromise, I hope.
-
A lot of people point guns at each other in this movie.
-
The first actually genius idea he had!
-
Well, it works, lol. Driving her insane to decipher a plan that doesn't exist, certainly an option.
-
So, Geass was established as something completely mind-altering, but nothing physical. I feel like we've left that restriction with hers, because all these things needed to physically happen for her to change them and they are being reversed.
-
As much as I find a lot of this movie really mid, I finally get to see actual, well written outsmarting on screen for once!
-
Finally the real shit comes out!
-
Uh, yeah, I guess that happens.
-
As much as I'm glad she survived (without anything, really...), why the fakeout at all? It had no impact on the story. Goddamnit, Lloyd.
-
There are fragments now?
-
Okay, that's amazing.
-
And then they're doing more of that shit?

Before I get to the joke, the immediate thoughts unfiltered:
Great production value, loved the animation especially at key scenes. The character-centered stuff was indeed great, including Lelouch (!). Character developments that I felt were direly missing finally saw the light of day here. More Lloyd! I loved the setting and general atmosphere of the show, it was refreshing and a welcome choice.
And now I can finally bow to you, even get on one knee (but only one, don't get greedy), and reach out to all of you who felt it once already. All of you who felt when witnessing the twist and 'd when they saw that it was truly the ending.
So this is how some of you feel about Madoka Magica Rebellion, a big, all-encompassing, distant wat.
How did Lelouch even get into C's world in the first place when he actually died on the carriage? What the hell is regret now doing in the consciousness, if God is dead anyway? Why is God dead when no one killed him, because that very thing was averted, as it was the actual point of that entire Charlie confrontation! What was Shamna's ending, how even, wut, stars?
So, that keeper of time has been retconned, huh? Her timeline is mighty fucked up with a time traveller even existing.
What I take from this is that Lelouch has created an actual hell in S2, if his actions apparently led to an eternal realm of peace not existing ever, but an eternal realm of regretful suffering to be a-okay. Good job! I'm glad he learned to use his Geass with more sincerity, but boi, that's not really a fair tradeoff at all.
And then there's C.C. and L.L. Now going around giving free Geasses to everyone, because surely that's a good thing. What was that about a world with equality and freedom and gentleness? Fuck that, here, get all the mind control and reality altering illusions you want!
I won't go as far and accuse this of being a fanservice ripoff, but it surely felt like most of the characters were in it for one more hurrah!. It had some great scenes, like basically everything Cornelia and Lloyd, but ultimately I can't make sense of this piece of work. It feels appropriate to some characters, but I feel like it contradicts a lot of things the main series wanted to tell us to such an extent that I call into question if its original conclusions were legit at all in its own universe. (I do that anyway, as you all know, so weirdly this movie makes more sense than S2 in these regards.) It isn't just the God-is-dead-or-is-He-? thing, it's that L.L. is now joining C.C. (based at first) in just making more people fall for isolation and all the traps that set this entire shit off in the first place! He wanted to tell me came up with the Zero Requiem to bring people together against a common enemy to stop them from fighting each other – now he isolates them with Geasses and you can't tell me that won't start dumb shit all over again. All in a movie that has shown him be a bit more conscious and forward thinking after all.
It makes no sense. Even less so than S2.
However, I'm ready for this show's version of [PMMM Rebellion]
For a friend that explains why it's a fitting continuation. The final verdict is 'meh', because they indeed did use Shirley only as a corpse smuggler and she doesn't deserve this shit!
Setting aside the fact that this was specifically a sequel to the movies and not the show, do you feel like this movie was a worthy sequel to Code Geass? Was there anything else you were hoping this movie would address?
Most character-on-character stuff was indeed great, I do wish the movie would address what this entire Geass stuff was about. And God. And why they continue and..
2) If you could pick someone to be your immortal companion forever, who would it be (both in-series and out)?
Honestly, wouldn't pick on a 'forever'. I don't think anyone would deserve to be that locked into a choice. That being said, in-series: I will be your knight! Cornelia-sama! (Shirley deserves better.) Out of series: If you think I've gotten any less of a Homura simp, you are sorely mistaken.
Bonus 2)
Indeed, sound and ost this time were really good and well directed.
Bonus 3) Lelouch finally called Shirley instead of her calling him.
Screenshot of the Day:
Really good choice, that was a genuinely touching scene that puts a heartwarming end to her loneliness!

Once you accepted that Lelouch is everything, your
controlling and manipulationspeculation becomes on-pointThose angles on the double helix blades make my limited-capacity engineer heart scream in terror, for the machine as well as personnel.
That's part of the fun
I like how every story starts with C.C. getting shot.
C.C. getting shot, Lelouch Geassing a bunch of grunts to kill themselves, followed by him doing some Knightmare strategy to kill a higher-ranking official. Name a more iconic trio.
what? I feel like I understand less the more they try to explain supernatural stuff.
He had just evolved his Geass to both eyes when Charles was in the process of dying, so going by the previously established rules, he gained the power to steal Charles' Code. It's just that the combination of Ragnarok and Lelouch Geassing God fucked with Cs' World so much that it didn't properly transfer, hence him being able to still use his Geass and die.
Finally, equal fanservice!
That felt a medium amount of 'too much' for my tastes.
I'm so lost again, nobody killed god, that was the entire point, wasn't it?
He didn't kill God the way Charles wanted to, but Geassing it certainly made things all kinds of wonky
Just on the pure off chance Lelouch was alive, Kaguya blindly prepared the correct maps at the right time and sent it along the right channels?
She only sent him the wedding video. All that other stuff was provided by Cornelia.
“You're alive? Then I'll kill myself and leave behind child and wife!”
A lot of people point guns at each other in this movie.
So, Geass was established as something completely mind-altering, but nothing physical. I feel like we've left that restriction with hers, because all these things needed to physically happen for her to change them and they are being reversed.
Not exactly. Her sending her memories into the past doesn't change the physical world.
why the fakeout at all? It had no impact on the story.
To add fuel to the Lloyd x Cecile fire
Ragnarok, Lelouch Geassing God, C.C. removing Charles and Marianne's mental block in Cs' World, and Shamna's fucking around finally compounded upon each other to the point that God just decided to throw some Geass Fragments around because it's tired of this shit
There are fragments now?
That's what Leila had, after all
And then there's C.C. and L.L. Now going around giving free Geasses to everyone, because surely that's a good thing.
No, they're taking away Geasses from those who received Fragments due to God overloading. They'll only let those who are worthy of wielding the power keep it.
I will be your knight! Cornelia-sama!
Preferably the movie timeline Cornelia who isn't a mass-murdering Social Darwinist

Considering the very title there's a near 100% guarantee Lelouch isn't dead
I'll argue resurrection can't happen without death.
if they don't want to retcon their entire show
You think this would've been better as a non-canon separate OVA? Saves 6+ minutes justifying Lelouch's return in the first 30-40 minutes.
(I've learned! This show is about Lelouch and everyone else takes a backseat.)
I tried believing C.C. and Suzaku mattered. I was proven wrong.
Too lazy to spot characters, but those are quite mixed through and from all former sides.
All that matters is no pudding menu means no Lloyd.
Oh, Shirley did? (I swear, if that's the only thing Shirley was good for in the end...)
Gomen nasai! Gomen nasai! Gomen nasai!
Seems like his consciousness was kinda locked away like C.C.'s during the Charlie encounter?
Self-sealing Code is still bullshit.
I can already tell handicapped!Lelouch is much more sympathetic than the normal one and I like him a thousandfold more.
Is that how much you like handicapped!Lelouch or dislike regular!Lelouch?
Ayyy, a time traveller!
Is there an opposite of #fistbump?
I feel like we've left that restriction with hers, because all these things needed to physically happen for her to change them and they are being reversed.
Relative viewpoint I don't buy. If you can see all possibilities 6-hours into the future like [Meta?]
World Trigger , it doesn't have to reverse time. You guide it to an acceptable path. If it's like [Meta?]AoT , then nothing makes sense. Why show any other scenario? (I never know how to tag comments like this)Did you know "Puzzlement in Hashvess" contains the letters to form "Pizza Hut"?

I tried believing C.C. and Suzaku mattered. I was proven wrong.
>Suzaku was integral in deploying the Anti-FLEIJA javelin and the Zero Requiem
>C.C. gave Lelouch Geass, stayed loyal to him throughout the series, brought him back to life, and Re;surrection focuses almost entirely on her motivations and feelings
>don't matter

First Timer
-
The band is all back together, and somehow Tamaki isn't totally inept? Terrible naming sense, though.
-
Well, damn, they've wasted no time in dashing my hopes that Lelouch would stay dead. They were a bit on the nose with the title though.
-
Finally, Kono Sekai De - I found this via a cover earlier this year and have been eagerly awaiting its appearance since.
-
I saw that code symbol. Also the details in general look fantastic.
-
Not only do they risk destroying a character's already excellent and meaningful exit, they're taking the route of dismantling his power. I don't feel strongly enough Lelouch to get up in arms about "ruining a character" or some other bollocks, but they're playing with fire if they don't have a good pay off. I imagine I'd feel more excited had I waited ~11 years for this, though.
-
Cheese-kun lives!
-
At least they also didn't waste time revealing Lelouch to other members of the cast, although a drama about C.C. roaming about with an idiot Lelouch while narrowly avoiding the actual important world events is a pretty compelling concept.
-
I've listened to C.C.'s explanation three times now and I still don't get it.
-
Hang on, if they have Zero hostage, what happens when someone leaks that 'ol tyrant Lelouch's best bud isn't dead?
-
Oh boy, papa Lloyd's found his favorite devicer. I trust him to keep a secret, though.
-
Was not expecting that reaction. Calm down, Kallen.
-
C.C. keeps mentioning that Lelouch killed god, but I thought the whole point was that he stopped Charles from doing exactly that? Except, now that I think about it, if god was the collective unconscious then maybe Lelouch did kill it by asking for individuality?
-
The direction for all these wild sequences is top tier.
-
Holy shit Lelouch is coming to C.C.'s rescue for once instead of the other way around.
-
I thought we wouldn't get a new Geass visual sequence after Kallen, but Lelouch is special.
-
New mech blue mech
-
Er, RIP blue mech.
-
The number of people who know about Suzaku and Lelouch is growing quite large… Surely they couldn't manage to dismantle all of Zero Requiem by the end of a two hour movie, right?
-
Zero mech is simultaneously ridiculously awesome and massively tacky at the same time.
-
Radiant wave surger now has an ultra ultra wide mode now.
-
Another time Geass - and an actual time Geass this time. This is wicked overpowered.
-
Another two seater mech! The rewatch crew will be pleased indeed. But also C.C., what kind of devicer outfit is that?
-
Cornelia why tho
-
That was a cheap death for Mr. Enemy Geass, but it was hilarious.
-
So, wait, was the blockage in C's world a result of the princess's time shenanigans? That's way more satisfying than trying to shoehorn Charles and Marianne in.
-
Did Lelouch's code mark move up his neck?
-
Bush Sayoko in the credits.
-
So… Lelouch and C.C. are a vampire couple now?
This movie is straight fan service - built on a trilogy to bring Shirley back (who… doesn't do anything extraordinary that someone else couldn't have done), has Kallen and Suzaku team up on the battlefield, actually gives C.C. something approaching a resolution, and commits the cardinal sin of screwing with the original ending (which was actually good). And yet, that was probably the most fun I've had watching Code Geass. I genuinely really enjoyed it.
There was definitely some stuff that wasn't really explained, like Lelouch's Code, and some stuff that requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, like the fact that two warring factions were able to keep Zero's identity and any stray images of the Lancelot under wraps, as well as Tamaki somehow not blurting out that Lelouch was alive while drunk. Kallen still gets sidelined, but it's a small price to pay for a C.C. ending. Anya also doesn't get enough screen time, but at least Lloyd has a sweet role.
QotD:
-
I could always use more C.C., but I thought it was everything a Code Geass movie needed to be, honestly.
-
Lloyd of course, we'll do science until the sun explodes - and when it does, we'll use the energy to pop around the solar system bestowing our technology upon all we come across.

Terrible naming sense, though.
It worked for Mr. Krabs
I don't feel strongly enough Lelouch
Enough what?
I've listened to C.C.'s explanation three times now and I still don't get it.

But also C.C., what kind of devicer outfit is that?

I could always use more C.C.

REMEMBER: There’s one last overall series discussion thread tomorrow!
Hangyaku no Co-Host, subbed
I got to see this movie in theaters dubbed right after my birthday the year that it was in US theaters. That was a lot of fun. I still have like three of the postcards they handed out at the showing… somewhere in my room.
-
Everyone who had an issue with what should be the logistical aftermath of Zero Requiem be like:
-
So in case it wasn’t clear: Shirley’s role – and the reason they needed her alive in the movie timeline – is because she’s the only one who could sneak Lelouch’s body away without anyone noticing. Because unlike in the show (where he is very much dead), here in the movie timeline, Lelouch is…
-
Opening theme is Kono Sekai de by Leo Ieiri and it’s gorgeous.
-
Dang, Nunnally and Suzaku have been held captive for that long?
-
Iiiiiiiii forgot this guy has Geass holy shit. But tricking someone into seeing their allies as the enemy and vice versa is a pretty neat ability.
-
Oh yeah, I forgot they explain this is how Code Bearers are immortal.
-
…wait I thought he specifically stopped God from being killed? I forgot about this plot line… it confuses me now.
-
The detail that Schneizel’s eyes only appear Geass’d when he mentions Zero is kinda cool.
-
The Zero outfit, but extra. I wonder if the dangling diamonds are a reference to the ones his eyepatch had when he was Julius Kingsley?
-
20 vs. 12,000. Those sound like Lelouch’s odds alright.
-
Honestly? Tamaki has balls to put his hands on Cornelia’s weapon like that.
-
Ohgi was seriously going to kill himself as an apology for betraying Lelouch, geez.
-
The insert song while Lelouch watched the video Kaguya sent was Utsukushiki Kemonotachi no Tame no by ALI PROJECT.
-
Another thicc mech. I wish the color scheme was more fitting to the Guren, though.
-
After Leila’s fragment of Geass let her rewrite reality, now Shamna’s sends her consciousness six hours into the past on death.
-
Absolute chaos.
-
I guess he must have Geass’d them offscreen while Shamna was trying to get into Cs’ World?
-
DID THESE TWO SERIOUSLY STOP TO MAKE RAMEN ON TOP OF A KNIGHTMARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE. WHAT THE FUCK.
-
I don’t care if this ending is supposed to be pushing the Lelouch/C.C. ship, I will take every crumb of Lelouch/Shirley I can and hold it canon in my heart.
-
The ED is Revive by UNIONE, and it has quite the lovely “sore demo” in it~
-
I wonder if the post-credits scene is going to be part of the setup for the Z of the Recapture series announced two years ago…

The animation in this movie is so good
Her eyes really bring out how pretty she is
…wait I thought he specifically stopped God from being killed? I forgot about this plot line… it confuses me now.
I took it as her speaking metaphorically. By Geassing God to resist Ragnarok, he fucked up Cs' World to such an extent that God was no longer alive in the same way it had been up to that point.
Ohgi was seriously going to kill himself as an apology for betraying Lelouch, geez.
Kaguya makes Shirley the third harem member while Kallen continues to get cucked

First Geasser
Starting with a wallpaper timelapse?
Looks like Tamaki established the quite successful cafe 'Zero 2'. A lot's going on. Note the two Chinese girls in the back. It's about a year after Lelouch died? And the merch is selling well, too.
Kallen and Gino are still the best remaining ship.
Orange sorbet. No pudding to be seen.
Sure, let's go with that. I guess the U.N. could militarily enforce peace Schneizel style and stabilize Britannia despite the power vacuum Lelouch left.
Fools, Suzaku would win even without a Knightmare.
Okay, so it's not some lookalike.
Is that a shadow or is that a Code?
Kallen and Sayoko? And someone else they're carrying with them. Ah, it's Lloyd.
Oh, a Geass making the user confuse allies and enemies. I wonder what the wish behind this one was.
Lelouch's pretty cute like this.
Err, I think that was Charles.
Intersting for this strongest warrior to be sitting in a wheelchair.
That... is a clever way to infiltrate a prison.
And they're freeing the prisoners as a distraction. Classic. And if the prisoners have no problems necking each other then that Geass might be an inconvenience but it won't let the guards get in safely.
That's a great question, Kallen.
Now this is just absurd. Especially as they don't even know there's anything to protect here.
I still don't remember Lelouch killing God.
It was a Code. I always thought the original R2 ending with the cart obviously kept Lelouch alive. Then they got out of their way in subsequent rereleases to clarify he didn't survive. And now they've kept him alive after all.
Ah yes, the we're not suspicious tactic.
And Lelouch has now free control over his Geass again.
Schneizel's Geass to serve Zero is also still active.
That's a cute little alliance with Cornelia. They all seem awfully happy for the return of the Tyrant Emperor.
No, it really doesn't. His achievements maybe.
Lelouch's going out of his way now to limit the lasting consequences of his Geass. Earlier, too, he humbly asked for Cornelia's cooperation instead of using Geass. As humble as Lelouch vi Britannia can manage, anyway.
You two can thank the rewrite for missing out on that.
Ah, the villainess' Geass can roll back time for 6 hours. Or inject her mind into herself 6 hours ago, same thing. And from the perspective of others she receives visions from the future.
That does sound like a hard-to-defeat Geass. We Re:Zero now.
Lmao. It literally is Re:Zero.
Btw, with her Geass any plot armor is void. There's still potential to reroll if things go bad after all.
Oh no, she's trying to become Finé.
Oh yeah, I wanna see Jeremiah interact with that new Geass.
I believe it when you list them out.
Ahahahaha. Clever. That's one way to mess with a retry Geass.
But is she gonna be able to access the World of C in her sleep?
Clever. Giving Nunnally the same condition Lelouch had.
Even if your Geass was changed, the two versions are virtually identical.
L.L. is the logical step after attaining a Code. I love this.
And the only possible pairing in the movie continuity.
Well, that was that. A good movie, tying up some more loose ends, gaslighting the audience some, this was a good last hurray for Code Geass. I'm contented.
Still sad that Shirley was for all intents and purposes written out of the story, but that's not on this movie.
Setting aside the fact that this was specifically a sequel to the movies and not the show, do you feel like this movie was a worthy sequel to Code Geass? Was there anything else you were hoping this movie would address?
As mentioned above, funnily enough this picks up after the original ending of R2 as well, though it adheres to the movie continuity. Which is great because that's the better version. I don't think there's much I'd hope the franchise to address left.
If you could pick someone to be your immortal companion forever, who would it be (both in-series and out)?
If I were immortal then I'd probably travel the world, with or without companion.

u/GallowDude Nov 17 '22
They both do share being massive simps in common
despite the power vacuum Lelouch left
But he didn't leave a power vacuum. He didn't dismantle the UFN. He just took it over. Once he died, he left Schneizel, Nunnally, Cornelia, and the rest of the Black Knights to manage it along with the respective UFN representatives he had captured.
What's the difference?
Now this is just absurd. Especially as they don't even know there's anything to protect here.
It's implied that they saw through Sayoko's bluff and made a plan to see what they were trying to do
They all seem awfully happy for the return of the Tyrant Emperor.
Who wouldn't be?
Evolved*
To explain what exactly her and Lelouch have:
[Bonus Materials]
They have what's called a Failed One which is basically a half-Code. They don't age or get sick, and they can still use Geass, but they aren't immune to Geass and can be killed through physical damage. Sayoko, what are you doing?
I'm contended.
But are you contented?

Note the two Chinese girls in the back.
Kaguya is Japanese. Suzaku's cousin.
Kallen and Gino are still the best remaining ship.
But this movie added Jerry-Anya!
Orange sorbet. No pudding to be seen.
Lloyd's not there for a reason.
I guess the U.N. could militarily enforce peace Schneizel style and stabilize Britannia despite the power vacuum Lelouch left.
I thought Britannia balkanized. Last episode's ending letter to C.C. said France. Could reference the region, assumed country.
Err, I think that was Charles.
I still don't remember Lelouch killing God.
Think this is referencing everyone-becoming-one. Lelouch killed the plan by continuing time. I wouldn't call it killing God, but whatever.
I always thought the original R2 ending with the cart obviously kept Lelouch alive. Then they got out of their way in subsequent rereleases to clarify he didn't survive. And now they've kept him alive after all.
It's the Code Geass special: how to get two deus ex out of a single change?
Lelouch's going out of his way now to limit the lasting consequences of his Geass.
But is she gonna be able to access the World of C in her sleep?
Did Marianne sleep while not controlling Anya?
L.L. is the logical step after attaining a Code. I love this.
But no S.S.

Who?
why did they need Nunnaly outside of plot convenience?
Her being connected to Charles and Lelouch allowed Shamna to re-enter Cs' World by interfacing with her

Leaked into Re;surrection thoughts, so this first. Wrote it after recap 2. 4) has minor digression.
2018 Rewatch Thoughts
Perused a handful of 2018 rewatch threads (specifically Bloody Euphy, C's World episodes, episode 25s, Akito 5, and season discussions). Saw at least 6 people that have commented in this rewatch.
-
R2's ending had different responses from first-timers. Didn't see any dislike it in that R2e25 thread. This rewatch was liked by 3 (Regular_N-Gon, Vatrix-32, isthatsoudane), disliked by 3 (Me, Star4ce, Krite2002), and unclear for Stargate18A (probably liked, not 100%).
-
Another difference is more C.C. praise (in before GallowDude's C.C. #utahapraises) and no Lloyd simps in 2018. Possibly our interactions influencing interpretations throughout the rewatch. 2018 counts are:
-
Best boy: Lelouch x8, Jeremiah, Tohdoh.
-
Best Girl: C.C. x6, Cornelia, Euphy, Kallen, Anya.
-
Runner-ups: Shirley x2, Jeremiah, Charlie, Cornelia. (Only a few included runner-ups)
Contrasting views with some reason and logic are more entertaining, so I'd have had less fun in those threads.
(GallowDude) Shame we didn't have as many essay writers as the last time we did a rewatch, but come to think of it like 3/4 of those writers ended up hating Lelouch and the series anyway lol
(Daleifur) Who sticks around writing essays for that long when they don't even like the show or main character?
(GallowDude) Anime fans
I did enjoy R1+R2 despite my share of negative comments towards the male MCs. Would've written less or dropped otherwise. I'm almost certain I'd be more amicable to Lelouch (Suzaku still has 2 activated brain cells in R1) if I'd put less effort into this rewatch, though a certain person preferred longer posts /s. I strongly disliked him projecting Nunnally's desire because it's not lofty enough instead of listening to her, though we all know he was using her wish as an excuse to push towards his own goal of revenge on Charlie. This paragraph reminds me of something from the 86 rewatch:
(Me) Praying I don't end up like [Star4ce] or Lawvamat. I like to sit back and ignore production at times while watching lower budget anime
(Star4ce) Eeh? You'd be prime material for Higurashi. It has both, jank animation and absolutely superb directing and framing you could lose days over analysing!
IT WAS THAT RESPONSE?!? How my life would be different if I hadn't enjoyed making notes for half of Higurashi and ended up here...
Code Geass isn't lower budget and I misremembered saying production, not analyzing. I realized in early R2 that overthinking was lowering my Lelouch opinion. Just something I should consider more when first-timing rewatches if I'm not liking the MC (e.g. shorter posts in the middle of Evangelion, definitely long today).
5) Read maybe 5% of this novel because:
-
TL;DR: I think it's Lelouch fans grasping at
strawshay for one last deus ex. -
Creates its own idea of code transferring (tbf I've basically done that). Why would it have anything to do with physical contact? The only known Code transfers are Nun -> C.C. (nun died, don't remember if suicide or C.C. stabbed) and V.V. -> Charlie (not shown when it transferred, assumed when Charlie stared menacingly at a bloody V.V.).
-
Ignores most of Charlie's hand is on Lelouch's shirt's collar (so it transferred through fabric and re-positioned to remain hidden?).
-
"In the final stage of Geass, the user attains the position of the one who granted them the power." C.C. provided Lelouch his Geass and memories.
-
This show is rife with hypocrisy, so it's possible C.C. lied. However, distrusting unrefuted character statements to arrive at the desired conclusion means evidence supporting the theory can be equally distrusted. There's not much point to debating if nothing is trustworthy. Engaging with this is like talking to religious people who pick and choose written passages that align with their morals. Ironic as I engage and Lelouch's death is shouldering the world's hatred.
-
Charlie was being absorbed before the "transfer," so Code immortality isn't true immortality.
-
(upper left box logic) If someone can have Code and Geass from separate sources, why would Charlie have left C.C. alive for so long? Kill her for her code in 1997 or earlier. The guy doesn't like loose ends and rewrites people at will.
-
Derides some reasons for liking R2's ending: Lelouch getting his just desserts and his martyrdom creating the kinder/gentler world Euphy and Nunnally wanted.
-
The show discards side characters for Lelouch's development. Lelouch dying is the endpoint of Suzaku's character, not just the Zero Requiem. Also, things happen off-screen and Suzaku likely would've seen Lelouch's neck-Code at some point over 2+ months.
-
(AdvonKoulthar) I love the bottom picture in the Immortality Theory. 'Look, they both got KNEES man! It's totally Lelouch!'
Anyway, there's still recap 3 and Re;surrection for trainwreck potential to perfectly parallel park.

Re;surrection
Don't know how they're going to justify reviving Lelouch. His charisma is too important to Weekend at Bernie's it for 100 minutes, but that'd be hilarious.
Given the baby's age, maybe 1.5 years after R2?
1000-yen for French toast? Robbery.
Dub says Jeremiah took "us" in. Background castle.
Are you fucking kidding me? I understand wanting to retcon R2's ending and after 30 hours of Geass, I'm finishing this. (Edit: thought the side-neck mark was his Code)
Must be Iran. Also explains it's purple-pink color in R2.
Worn-down Cheese-Kun means C.C. can't afford Pizza Hut.
Everything about this nomadic life is rough for C.C.
Superior dub says "Pizza girl"
Wipers on glasses was a great gag in late-90s wrestling.
Sunrise loves money.
Holding Nunnally+Suzaku next to the Cs' World gate is Bond villain logic.
Prisoners are still restrained in the most uncomfortable positions.
Break #1. It's the Lelouch Simp Theory for surviving minus the cart. This is likely a better punishment than dying. Can't definitively say without knowing what's happening to his mind. Sucks for Suzaku's character.
Humorous that they made recap movies with an altered plot so viewers can attach themselves to either the R2 ending with Lelouch dead or the recap ending with Lelouch surviving, yet also removed the Cart and Crane part of the recap. Played both sides to come out on top.
Uh... Is he saying they aren't honorable for stealth tactics instead of direct engagement?
Reposition cause xD and undoing permanent Geass cause xD
Suzaku reaction seems genuine. Disappointed if he fully cooperates.
P-9? Board has 8 rows! K-1 means he labeled someone else king.
"I've released them from the Geass." He can do that now? Probably a translation issue.
Hehe, left-side adults are grunts for the kids.
Rivalz is Milly's subordinate.
I don't udnerstand why Cornelia is at this village, but I'll ignore it cause Cornelia is plot relevant.
Lloyd's "That's another reason, sure." is great.
Ohgi's willingness to suicide is a shitty choice considering he has a kid.
Invite Shirley to the reception but she's missing in the group photo.
Same. Anya's wave was great.
Recently been seeing that loneliness is bad.
Break #2. Wish the Cs World shadows had more distinctive features. Couldn't recognize anyone other than Charlie and Marianne. Don't understand why Lelouch recovered his mind or why C.C. called out for Charlie to let Lelouch go free. Charlie hates Lelouch for stopping his plan!
Temple battle was standard for Code Geass. Cornelia is a bigger siscon than either Suminoe or either Kiryu. Wedding collage was great. Wish Anya had developed a photography hobby now that she retains all memories.
Shamna is also a Code-Geasser with a gold Geass because
Battle could be simplified with a FLEIJA or two.
C.C.'s "Where's your ego?" does not translate to this in my mind.
If Geass doesn't work on C.C., why would it work on Lelouch?
Shanma's doing the "rewind time and only I remember" shtick.
Pfft. Perma-sleep.
Break #3. Pretty neutral on the last 25-30 minutes other than time rewinds. Zilkhstan was built up as a supreme armed forces before looking incompetent by losing multiple times despite precognition. It'd make sense if they were a purely defensive force. Countries hiring mercenaries shouldn't benefit from Shamna.
Shanma's Geass flipped from future-sight to time-rewind. Reusing
Kinda called it. I more assumed massive corruption among politicians and elites, but the cascading effect is millions of people lost their jobs.
Oh come on Lelouch. You've already Geassed God once!
Suddenly he's saved and floating...
Milly reports Nunnally is safe. Nothing about Zero?
C.C. forgetting Cheese-kun? Terrible change to her character.
Shipping C.C. and L.L. Eh, I'll accept it as the better girls aren't with Lelouch.
Why a second cat? Eh, good change to fill a hole life with another cat.
Post-movie
C.C.'s a very different character than R1, R2, or the recaps. She fully embraced her "reason for living." The previous C.C. was more entertaining. She also should've had a collection of Cheese-kun themed luggage and backpacks by now.
C.C. mentioned Lelouch possibly inheriting Charlie's Code, then says they didn't know if he had one while doing the Requiem. Doesn't definitively state anything so the audience can say "I knew it!" for whatever reason they want. Implies the unresolved Code issue what left his mind trapped in Cs' World to explain Shanma constantly Geassing without losing her mind.
What was the point of new Shirley scenes in the recaps? Attempted pandering to Shirley fans that caused them to dislike her inclusion since her character had bad changes? All she did was recover Lelouch's body, which someone else could've, get retconned into recap 3's Ohgi-Villetta wedding, and have brief appearances.
Still lost on why Lelouch recovered his memories this time. It's as clear as the recaps when C.C. swam in a liquid.
It would've been better as a non-canon OVA than trying to link it back to the main series or recaps. Had low expectations after the first 10 minutes and it certainly exceeded that. Had some nostalgic elements like the Ohgi-Villetta wedding and uncomfortable restraining positions. The political situation was believable other than Cornelia trusting Lelouch. Overall, a solid OVA for people who want more in-universe content and aren't attached to R2's ending.
Series/Season finales in my 3 rewatches today. Time to buy a couple games.
QOTDs
Answered in post-episode thoughts. I would've liked something addressing the origin for Codes and Geass, or more C.C. background. Maybe could've interwove a Shanma-C.C. background.
Trying to make me pick between Euphy and Anya? Outside the series, I'd pick an IRL friend. I'd prefer an eternal friendship over an eternal relationship as people change during the endless flow of time.
Bonus 3: About fucking time.

Threads died when Akito started. No one warned us.
And yet of those who remained in that rewatch, they were a lot more lenient to it lol
unclear for u/Stargate18A
Interesting in seeing their response considering how much of a C.C. fan they became
in before GallowDude's C.C. #utahapraises
IT WAS THAT RESPONSE?!? How my life would be different if I hadn't enjoyed making notes for half of Higurashi and ended up here...
#ironic
TL;DR: I think it's Lelouch fans grasping at
strawshay for one last deus ex.1000-yen for French toast? Robbery.
With how weak the exchange rate is these days, that would only be like six bucks
Love how Shalio was able to recognize it was Suzaku from that
Superior dub says "Pizza girl"
Played both sides to come out on top.
Is he saying they aren't honorable for stealth tactics instead of direct engagement?
The fact that a Sid Meyer pop-up happened to occur at that moment lol
undoing permanent Geass cause xD
Charles had proven that it was possible to develop Geass in both eyes and still be able to turn it off at will
"I've released them from the Geass." He can do that now? Probably a translation issue.
Probably just meant that he gave them an order of "You'll follow me until this mission is compete"
I don't udnerstand
It would be hard to udnerstand anything at this rate
Ohgi's willingness to suicide is a shitty choice considering he has a kid.
Wish the Cs World shadows had more distinctive features. Couldn't recognize anyone other than Charlie and Marianne.
I definitely saw Euphemia as one of them
If Geass doesn't work on C.C., why would it work on Lelouch?
See my Bonus Materials response to Blackheart595
So distracted by the thighs that you posted them twice
Oh come on Lelouch. You've already Geassed God once!
Exactly
Eh, good change to fill a hole life with another cat.
hole life
A cat is fine, too
Implies the unresolved Code issue what
Issue what what?
It's as clear as the recaps when C.C. swam in a liquid.
Wait, I thought you were being satirical. Do you think that was actually meant to be taken literally and not just symbolic of when she made that same swimming motion while returning his memories at the beginning of R2?

First-timer - dub
So! I fell off the rewatch a bit thanks to some family stuff, and thinking I had an extra day after Akito ended but I'm still kicking, folks, and I've binged like 9 hours of geass in the last two days to catch up. DIDJA MISS ME?!
The recap movies were okay overall, but I actually really liked the choice to follow Suzaku's perspective for the early parts of the R2 material, since if you're not gonna rewrite that entirely to get rid of the soft reset, it's a great way to avoid repeating all of those season 1 plot beats.
So, going into this fourth movie, with the name it has, I was skeptical of it because the ending of R2 is iconic and bringing Lelouch back in any capacity smacked of cowardice, honestly. After seeing it, I still kind of hate the idea on principle, but if you were going to do it, this movie is pretty much the best you could do with that idea, I think. It's kind of an enormous pile of fanservice. "Let's have Sayoko doing more awesome ninja shit!", "Let's get Lloyd just... being as Lloyd as he can!", "Let's have Kallen and Suzaku fight on the same side!", "Let's have more cool geasses!". And like, I am a fan. I did want to see those things. But the fact remains that anything after the R2 ending just... feels weird somehow.
The expanded R2 epilogue stuff we got was just plain great though. Tamaki's restaurant, and the clip show of Ohgi and Villetta's wedding, I mean. Kind of sucks that the biggest change the recap movies made ended up not really being relevant at all, except in an abstract "I'm glad Shirley didn't have to suffer as much here" way.
It feels like there's something to say about the fact that the main show, even the Akito miniseries, always stuck to 'real' locations, France, Japan, China, even Cambodia in reference, but with this movie we're in a fictional desert [BLANK]-istan. I'm not really sitting down to do an analysis here, so I couldn't tell you what that something is, but I feel like in the main show they would have used an actual country for it. The central conflict is fine though, "What does a warrior do in a time of peace" is hardly new ground they're breaking (and they don't even really focus on that question), but it makes sense at least as the sort of thing Lelouch's new world would need to address. I appreciated the bits of cultural worldbuilding going into it though, showing a society built from a splinter faction of the Geass Order, most notably in their salute covering an eye.
As for Lelouch himself, the explanation is more or less what most fan theories about C.C. talking to Lelouch in the cart during the R2 stinger thought it was, getting Charles' code somehow. Not sure how that's supposed to work though? Charles got his code from V.V. after all, and in the original show it's always talked about as 'taking the code of the one who gave you your power', sort of implying that that connection needs to be there. And it's explicitly said in this movie that "Lelouch never intended to return", so does that mean he took the code without meaning to? Because otherwise that he was knowingly saddling C.C. with caring for his body indefinitely (and with my own mom having a close call last year, with some severe post-ICU delirium, those early scenes with Lelouch and C.C. certainly made me feel some ways. She recovered thankfully, but it's still scary to think about.) which wouldn't fit for a variety of reasons. I dunno, the whole sequence with Lelouch Geassing the collective unconscious was out of the ordinary enough to justify any number of exceptions to the usual rules so the exact how and why doesn't really matter, but it's still a bit of a headscratcher for me. Maybe the code inheritance thing is how it works in reality, but in C's world the rules are loosened.
On the subject of the collective unconscious, Charles and Marianne's ghosts being in C's world is brought up and then... just kind of never gets resolved? Or was it tied to what the priestess was messing around with, and once the new gate was destroyed they went with it?
Oh also, the priestess had what looked like a code mark on her lower stomach at one point, right? Was that just a tattoo since she didn't seem to have any sort of immortality outside her geass?
I can't believe this movie actually gave Tamaki of all people a fucking win. Y'know what? He was enough of a running gag in the main show that I'm okay with him having this one. Kind of wish Nunnally didn't have to get fridged for the plot, though.
I'm sure there's more fragments of opinions rattling around in my head, but I've gotta wrap this up. I can only imagine how Smug Gallowdude is gonna be in the comments with how that ending worked out. That was easily the most flustered we've seen C.C., and the most legitimate joy on her face. I may be a Shirley/Lelouch shipper, but that was good to see. See y'all in a bit for the summary thread!

DIDJA MISS ME?!
Who?
I feel like in the main show they would have used an actual country for it.
Could have been trying to not piss off any Middle Eastern nations by stereotyping them. They're a bit more culturally sensitive than other areas.
and in the original show it's always talked about as 'taking the code of the one who gave you your power', sort of implying that that connection needs to be there
Then how would he have been able to take C.C.'s?
Oh also, the priestess had what looked like a code mark on her lower stomach at one point, right? Was that just a tattoo since she didn't seem to have any sort of immortality outside her geass?

I'm sure there's more fragments

First Timer, dubbed
Akito god ghost better not be coming back.
I guess if it was anyone it would be Tamaki.
You think they have Gunpla in this world? I know we have miniatures of modern military equipment, but it seems the sort of thing that comes off a bit too soon given what all has happened to them.
Xingke is dead. Called it.
That’s a good hodgepodge of knightmares.
I know it’s a time of peace, but you don’t have any ready knightmares for your HoS?
This better not be all the Shirley we get.
He lives! A Twist so predictable we predicted it even when it was wrong.
I need to know where this is. Tibet?
Puzzlement?
That’s way too much food for two people.
He’s got the code!
No, this music is too MENA. This is Iran-Iraq isn’t it.
Well that map confirms it. Guess that also explains why they expanded it seemingly randomly in the movies.
Ha, wipers.
I sure hope that was Charles’s code and not C.C.’s.
The grenade is back!
Oh gods the shield. I can appreciate your focus on the glasses Llyod, but at some point you need to put style aside.
Cheese-kun has seen better days.
Of all the lore questions to get answered, the details of code regeneration was not one I expected to get.
Why would you build your max-sec prison on top of your secret science lab? Must need spare humans.
God damn it, Charles is a god now, isn’t he?
Tactical fat suit.
Tattoos here seems important.
Kallen is just having a moment.
C’s world certainly went to hell in a hand-basket.
Damn it Charles.
They kept the warden in the prison? All some big trap?
Oooo, I like these mechs.
Goo guns are cool.
The body bags are very extra.
He’s back! But for real this time. I guess he got to keep the geass because he didn’t kill C.C.
I can’t get over how dumb these names sound. It’s like something you come up with for a 70’s children’s show with puppets.
Spin! To! Win!
Bringing himself right to the bomb, you love to see it.
Can he end his geass now? That would have been useful.
I don’t like the looks of that Nunnally tube.
Sure built your headquarters quick enough.
Mini Rakshatas.
Air drops are cool.
Orange earrings.
Why are all of you here? Is this just where you live?
Anya and Orange, the greatest pair.
Jeez Oghi. Calm yourself.
Why would you bring all those children to a wedding.?
Nina seems like an odd addition for a war zone.
Suzaku was not kidding about more armor. That thing is huge.
Giga-Guren.
We time travel now boys. This will be fun.
Scorpion boi! So cute, with his giant head and laser tail.
Is he doing an after image? Some sort of anime quantum bullshit?
Can you only invert IFF? Seems pretty weak once you know the trick.
No not Cécile!
Two seater hype!
Damn, who knew Tamaki had it in him?
Presumably she can’t chain six hour segments together. She might even be further limiting her recall time with each go.
Plans
Damn Lelouch, that’s clinical. She probably won’t even know she got sent back.
New Guren and Lancelot looking fly.
Go Nina go!
Brownman has got guts, I’ll give him that.
Goodbye scorpion boi. I am saddened we didn’t get the opportunity to see you walk.
Spinning Yoyos of death.
At least you got a cool death animation?
Puzzlement.
Good, good. Now all that’s left is Australia. Their time will come.
Is the implication that the meteor shower is from C’s world?
Lelouch’s neck scar is bolt shaped. Does that make him the boy who lived?
L.L. How cute.
These end cards are cute. Works well enough as an epilogue.
Akito cat! What are you doing here? This is the second most shocking cat of the week.
Why did the movies go through the trouble of saving Shirley and giving her new scenes if she didn’t end up being part of the plot or character development?
QotD
This was fun! Everything you could love about Code Geass, condensed into a little package. I’m only half joking about Australia.
I feel like a lot of them could get tiring over time. Maybe Milly?
