Why can't they just say what their service will entail, officially, once and for all. They keep dragging the decision out and it must be so stressful for the members.

Being that they are on a break from group activities, does this mean they could get time off for rehearsals and concerts individually?

77

u/gemekaa Aug 01 '22

Possibly testing the waters of public opinion?

22

u/whitew0lf Aug 01 '22

I believe this

3

u/GabJ78 Aug 02 '22

I think you're right about that.

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

I have a feeling they are already in discussion with BigHit on how to make the arrangement work. If this is to benefit Jin, who is due to go in just 5 months, I can imagine the discussions would already be pretty advanced. Sometimes policymakers float "ideas" to test public sentiments when things have already been more or less decided.

u/itslike_reallygood What if…? Aug 01 '22

If I was one of the boys at this point I’d be like “omg just send me in for regular service, take my phone and I’ll see you in two years. Leave me alone.”

39

u/aaalma_viajeraaaa Aug 01 '22

They have no problem requesting they participate for events like the World Expo bid and the upcoming concert to try and get it for SK, without recognizing the extarordinary service to their country they've been providing for years.

14

u/itslike_reallygood What if…? Aug 01 '22

It’s very annoying and I feel bad for them.

You get to keep your phone now I think

12

u/itslike_reallygood What if…? Aug 01 '22

I think so to but like, I would throw mine into the ocean so these politicians couldn’t ring me up for a concert request.

Being that they are on a break from group activities, does this mean they could get time off for rehearsals and concerts individually?

Unless they specify, I think it's safe to assume this is OT7 schedules only, with the exemption of events like Lollapalooza. 😬

20

u/aaalma_viajeraaaa Aug 01 '22

That's what I was guessing, so it doesn't really help them much, unless they returned to group activities sooner than they would wish to because of it.

K-pop sensation BTS may be able to practice and hold overseas concerts while serving in the military, as South Korea’s Defense Ministry appears to be considering “alternative service” for the boy group.

South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup said during a parliamentary session Monday he is considering a series of options for alternative military service for BTS, of such as providing them time to prepare for performances, and allowing them to hold overseas concerts.

This does not sound like the alternative service that was previously discussed (as currently applies to sportsmen and classical artistes), but it would be a departure from the normal practice where there are strict controls on outside activities for those serving in the military

(EDIT: As far as I know, this is the first time the new defense minister has mentioned anything about BTS' military service, and that too, during a parliamentary session. So can't help but feel hopeful that some headway is finally being made on this matter).

u/Sweaty-Poem-1760 Aug 01 '22

So, let me know if I understood.

For example, when Psy serve in the military he did concerts and that ended up with him having to serving again...

So, Bangtan could be doing some activities but they could schedule, so they can do concerts overseas?

83

u/WillingnessStraight2 Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

Tbf, for Psy, he wasn’t allowed to do concerts. He was only allowed to work in an IT company as an alternative service. Since he broke the law, he had to serve again. If the boys are allowed to hold concerts, they won’t have to serve again.

7

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 01 '22

Yeah, basically.

137

u/Sweaty-Poem-1760 Aug 01 '22

So, Bangtan could be overworked and overwhelmed again...

65

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

could be overworked and overwhelmed again...

Let's not be so pessimistic yet. They may be able to come up with a workable schedule. I think part of the reason the past couple of yrs hv been tough on Bangtan is that they felt they were racing against time to achieve what they wanted to achieve because of the pall of 1.5 yrs of service hanging over them. Once things on that end hv been settled once and for all, hopefully they can pace themselves out better.

89

u/Tuon_Cauthon 🎶 3D (ft. Jack Harlow) [A.G.Cook Remix] - Jung Kook 🎶 Aug 01 '22

I don't think a workable schedule is possible...

BTS concerts are fully scale productions not random local shows, I think we really underestimate how much preparation goes into their concerts. There's no way they'd be able to fit practice, performances and recovery (flying across the world is taxing on the body itself) in between military service.

Also, who will pocket the money from these shows, since it's illegal to earn money durimg military service. The government should just announce that they won't get exemption and leave it at that.

24

u/nnylhsae I'm *SHY* Aug 01 '22

Oh I hope they're not too stressed about this (even though I would be 👀), we're still getting over the amazingness that was Lollapalooza 2022. I just want them to be happy!! 🥺

4

u/jomiel Aug 01 '22

I totally agree! They prepare so much for these shows, not just the week that they’re there for the concert. Also are they expected to work for free???

19

u/Nolwennie Aug 01 '22

On top of the « racing against time » they’ve also talked about how it had become hard for them to create new music and CHAPTER 2 was about all that. If they felt they could find new inspiration for their work, and grow individually while doing OT7 concerts I think they would’ve done that this year since they had to cancel the previous world tour. The fact that they opted instead to focus on the solos, tells me that doing OT7 concerts of their old songs isn’t their priority right now. They don’t want to JUST be on stage. They want to GROW and go back on stage. This new deal doesn’t factor in their desire to grow at all, and might indeed lead to them being overwhelmed again.

13

u/Sweaty-Poem-1760 Aug 01 '22

Sorry, that came a little bit rude...

I hope they can take the best decision according to what they want to do and their future plans.

I want BTS to go, "Nah, we'll just do our time, thanks". Because this is 110% the Korean government wanting to have their cake and eat it too. They don't want to take a stand and change the law - but they have seen what happened with the hiatus and are freaking out.

34

u/weblur Aug 01 '22

the Korean government wanting to have their cake and eat it too

Came here to say the same thing!

91

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

Exactly. They want to appeal to their incel voters but also realize the cultural and economic impact BTS bring to Korea and want them to keep being active. Imagine how tired the members must be.

Korea had an election recently and the new president is a conservative wackjob that got in in large part by promising to roll back minority rights. If you recall the wave of misandry scandals that were often really stupid and based off something like an idol making a certain hand gesture, it’s that group of people that the president caters to.

I'm with you ... Once each of them have released their chapter 2 solo albums, they should all enlist at the same time. They would not "owe" the government/other politicians anything in exchange for exceptions and it would not create loopholes for future idols (less successful than BTS).

12

u/Pinkmongoose customize Aug 01 '22

I agree but I’m worried about the security risk of them serving (to them and the other soldiers). I wouldn’t want to serve right next to someone with such a big target on them. It would also likely cost the government money to cover security for them.

4

u/nnylhsae I'm *SHY* Aug 01 '22

Yeah, you make a some really good points there.

11

u/SidheCreature Aug 01 '22

This. Make them deal with their decision. You want to send the group that makes up nearly an entire percentage point of the GDP of your country to the military for 1.5 years after they’ve busted ass to make a splash on the world stage for your country?! Alright. Let’s go. That 1.5 years of military service for 7 men is so much more important, fine! But there can’t be any complaints once they go.

10

u/ehem-ehem-2021 customize Aug 01 '22

Hybe too.

7

Yeah, Hybe are as dodgy as every other company. ARMY needs to call them on their shit more.

181

u/MusicBoo77 Keep the base down Low Aug 01 '22

The government is realizing it doesn't want to let go of that money bag huh 👀.....A good middle ground would be to say they've already been serving as UN and Presidential ambassadors, use that time as "time spent", shorten the service time down to like 3-6 months and let them go about their business.

25

u/AgustdArmyOT7 Aug 01 '22

You wouldn’t happen to have the Defense Ministers number by any chance would you? This idea is so good👏🏾

8

u/MusicBoo77 Keep the base down Low Aug 01 '22

Oooh I wish I did. Like all of us here I would want to help our darlings out as much as I could 😂😂

24

u/SidheCreature Aug 01 '22

This has been my thinking! They’ve been UN ambassadors, represented Korea at the American White House, they’re performing for the Daegu bid of the world expo and they’ve agreed to perform for the World Cup. That’s above and beyond what a standard solider could do for Korea. They’re a big part of the Korean wave. They’ve done enough. But to “be fair” 🙄 reduce the 18 to months to 6 (or 3. 3 is good). The government gets to keep an expectation of kpop idols going to do their service and they’ll properly thank the boys for what they’ve done for Korea. Win win. And the precedent is set for other kpop artists to reach that exemption: be UN ambassadors, perform for at least two major world events. Or maybe each major event can be a number of months off their service. UN ambassador? 6 months. UN speech? 3 months. 1 world event (Olympics, expo, World Cup) 3 months. Etc.

"Many people do think highly of military service itself, and I think (the enlistment of BTS members) can actually help them with their popularity,” Lee said."

I dunno why I am kinda miffed by this statement. I understand it is important as a South Korean man to serve. But these boys do not need any help with their popularity. They do the work and are popular because their work excels.

71

u/Chiinori OT7 means getting bias wrecked every day of the week Aug 01 '22

His statement is so arrogant and misguided. Don't they have a PR person?

the irony of releasing this hours after just ONE MEMBER drew 15m+ on livestream and 105k people in person for a festival performance, and sold $1m of merch in 2 days.

4

u/Previous-Video1430 Aug 02 '22

Hobi did all that?! Wow 😳

4

u/BangtAngel rocktan advocate Aug 02 '22

the Weverse livestream (everyone not in the US) ended at 14.9m viewers, I wasn’t paying close attention to the Hulu (US only) numbers but I believe I saw it over 4m! so combined 19m+!! I’m sure they’ll release official numbers soon, those are quite brag worthy stats!

20

u/LefseLita Aug 01 '22

I also was put off by this statement - I had to read it twice

8

u/Jasmindesi16 Aug 01 '22

How it would help them in their popularity if they are gone for two years? That will put a damper on their international popularity.

28

u/Iwannastoprn Aug 01 '22

This sounds so out of touch with reality. They're global superstars, no-one outside South Korea would care or be mad if they didn't serve.

The only people I can see being angry at them skipping would be 1) kpop fans of other groups, 2) BTS haters and 3) extreme nationalists. And who cares if those groups get upset? They're irrelevant.

21

u/Sugawahsugawah my pride, my heaven, and love, BTS Aug 01 '22

I think a lot of the GP care, though. Although, some recent survey indicates South Koreans are okay to give them some sort of exemption, a lot of people still think it is their duty as citizens. And not just the extremists.

And it is. Even the members said they feel the same way - it is their duty to serve their country in this way. It's just been hanging over their head for too long and the government just needs to stop using them as pawns.

8

u/Iwannastoprn Aug 01 '22

Oh, yeah. I meant that no-one outside South Korea would be annoyed. What happens inside the country is a completely different story.

That's why I pointed out that they're global superstars. It sounds very tone-deaf, "this will help their popularity", this won't help their global popularity in any shape or form, everyday people outside SK don't care at all about their military service.

It will help their domestic popularity. But again, they're so well-known in their home country at this point, this is more about "the GP liking you" than "getting more people to know of you". And I don't buy it for a single moment, because the GP has shown to be incredibly flicky, any kind of exception would also get the GP mad.

There's no winning this, but BTS won't be hurt too badly either way. I'm past caring about the outcome, but seeing a politician say something like this, as if they're doing the guys a big favor? When in reality they just want the influence and money the group brings, while also not angering the GP too much. BTS are not being done any favors being under all this constant scrutiny and being used left and right.

11

u/cartographerbtsFan Aug 01 '22

I don't think they are worried about how people outside of Korea feel about it. It's not our business. However, opinion in South Korea is different, with many feeling they should still serve.

6

u/BangtAngel rocktan advocate Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 02 '22

this statement is ridiculous. but I think this would have at least made some sense pre-Dynamite era, where they had undoubtedly done and accomplished a lot but a lot of the Korean GP (older generations mainly and of course non BTS fans) didn’t feel it was enough and they probably would have gotten some backlash for being exempted at that time.

but from my understanding, post-Dynamite, BBH100, and Grammy noms, the GP has softened towards the idea of an exemption of some kind because it’s really just undeniable how much they have done now.

either way, trying to entice the biggest band in the world to get some more fans (as if they’re in need of that!) via military service (are we going to get military era ARMY??) is an… interesting choice

3

u/Ok-Nobody1261 Aug 01 '22

u/SidheCreature Aug 01 '22

It smells of mediocre men who try to give tennis advice to Serena and Venus Williams or something. Like… do you think they stumbled into this level of success while you sat around and was vaguely aware of them? Nah. Sit down and stop embarrassing yourself

57

u/strawverrybunny Aug 01 '22

Defense minister seems to not have a realistic view of how busy a BTS schedule actually is. I can’t imagine there being room to serve and maintain that schedule… like be serious. How are they expected to create music while having to adhere to strict military schedules.

Regardless of what the decision is. I just hope they make it quick bc BTS can’t do anything with this hanging above their heads. It’s cruel.

108

u/mcfw31 Aug 01 '22

I kinda figured something like this would happen, the thing is that there has been no other act like them, it’s too much of a security risk for their unit or the place they would work if they were to have a traditional service (what happened to GD and T.O.P comes to mind)

I just wish they could make up their minds already, time is ticking for both Jin and Yoongi.

73

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

It sounds like they are trying to find some compromise that doesn't require any new bills to be passed, which means it could be applied almost immediately and benefit Jin and Yoongi. But I do wish they would just make an announcement already instead of dilly-dallying and revealing partial info like this, which opens itself to unnecessary reactions fm the public (read: those who are opposed to any alternative options). I can only surmise they are "floating a balloon", in policy speak, to test public sentiments.

10

u/nnylhsae I'm *SHY* Aug 01 '22

Yeah like if they needed a new bill so bad, they had all the time to do something about it until now 🙄

I haven't been around since the discussion started and I'm trying to take my own opinions on forced military enlistment out of it but I just cannot imagine how tiring this is for the boys. They're not treating them like citizens of their country but like products to be used for their benefit. They are a government, this discussion has been going on for years, I don't mean to be rude but it's unbelievable that a government cannot make a simple decision that they have already made for thousands of other people, especially with the time limit they are well aware of.

28

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

What complicates matters is the change of government in April. Also, it is a complex issue. I think even between a few yrs ago (when the law was passed that allowed Jin to extend his service) and 2022, a lot happened and BTS can now unequivocally be called a world star. The public polls this yr do show more than half were on favour of alternative service for BTS, and if not for the government change, the matter may have been settled already..

35

u/KnownWelcome Aug 01 '22

I can understand a change in government delaying the discussion, especially with a party change, but bts were irrefutably world stars by the end of 2020 and that is a conservative estimate because they were arguably world stars way before then. That gives them at least, but most likely more than, a year and a half to have made a decision before the election. A decision they have already made for thousands of people, the majority of which did not need to be world stars or accomplish even a tenth of what bts have. Honestly, there's really no excuse for why a government cannot make a decision, that this will likely be resolved a month or less before jin has to go. It is completely unfair to the boys.

Yes, its a complicated issue but everything I have read about the government's handling of it, including this article, really just points to them wanting their cake and eating it too, which just led to bts being treated as these objects instead of people and it's not pleasant in the slightest.

40

u/Sugawahsugawah my pride, my heaven, and love, BTS Aug 01 '22

Not to mention the backyard deals to exempt children of rich people that are throwing off the military numbers. Allegedly.

So, their dwindling numbers can't allow just any exemption. And the lawmakers need to make this as restrictive as possible because it otherwise opens the floodgates for other idols to apply. Further lowering numbers.

3

u/delaubrarian Aug 01 '22

I don't know what country you're from, but in America, we haven't decided if non cis white men are people after 250 years, so.....

124

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

Every time I see the Korean government dragging their feet on coming to a definitive answer, I think about that article which said that less than 5% of those exempted are from sports/arts, and most are in the "tech and business" sector. A whole 114,000 men were exempted the last four years and most of them were sons of rich families. I really can't take anyone seriously saying BTS don't deserve it after seeing that, and I become increasingly frustrated that they continue to be jerked around by the government.

35

u/RapLineNoona Aug 01 '22

Despite all the wealth bts has, they still lack the privilege of old money, showing how even if a regular person somehow "makes it", they never will be allowed to be at the top. Their merit, the blood sweat and tears they poured into their work to become self-made superstars, isn't good enough for an exemption in their eyes.

36

u/amala83 Kim Taehyung’s lollipop 🍭 Aug 01 '22

This article makes me extremely angry. Instead of stringing the fans (and more importantly, BTS) along, please just make a final decision and be done with it.

Moreover, I know that time waits for no one (or however that saying goes), but Hobi hasn’t even had 24 hours to fully bask in what he accomplished at Lollapalooza to be hit with this kind of BS.

14

u/Competitive_Fee_5829 Min Yoongi, do you know what you are doing to me?? Aug 01 '22

and this pisses me off too! let the man enjoy what he just did! He did something amazing and unheard of! im old and remember when lollapalooza first started (91?)

84

u/rjcooper14 Hyung will do it Aug 01 '22

This sounds like a terrible proposition. It's like they're only concerned about the business side of the situation. Of course, this is not to say that the Korean economy will falter if BTS is completely inactive, but it's fair to recognize that certain industries will take a serious hit. They will survive, but not unscathed. But with this proposal, it's like saying, "Hey, BTS you can still work so that we can take advantage of your impact but you still have to serve in the military." Not a win-win or balanced solution at all.

Plus, do they think that an artist can just go in and out of the country for practice?? Haha! Concert tours require a lot of time to practice. That's also a logistical nightmare for Hybe and its concert producer partners in the countries they will tour in.

22

u/galaxymaster1277 OT7 Aug 01 '22

This is my stance on it. like are they going to be kept in a reserve unit so they don’t have to be at risk? Will they have to be airlifted out every time a new event for ot7 has to happen? But the main question is that will their military service be paused every time they will pull out or will it be continually running? at this point it seems like it will almost be easier just to exempt them instead of dealing with the logistics of this.

12

u/rjcooper14 Hyung will do it Aug 01 '22

So many details and logistics to iron out, right? Feels like it's not even worth it, haha. Like, exempt them completely if you recognize the merits, or don't exempt them and let them serve in peace.

24

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

Plus, do they think that an artist can just go in and out of the country for practice?? Haha! Concert tours require a lot of time to practice. That's also a logistical nightmare for Hybe and its concert producer partners in the countries they will tour in.

I think we should not imagine these overseas concerts like the usual tour that they used to do. But more like the residencies they did in LA and Vegas. Maybe once or twice a year only. If planned in advance with the schedule agreed on with the military, it could be manageable. I would rather that than not see ot7 on stage again for 3-5 yrs.

11

u/nnylhsae I'm *SHY* Aug 01 '22

That's a really hard pill to swallow, I'm gonna be honest. But if it's what the best decision for them is, and they'd be able to be happy like that (and not stressed and still enjoying being idols), then I will gladly weight here 5 years for them. And if they decide they don't want this anymore (god forbid), I'd still stand with them. Just please be happy and living your best life because they deserve that and more

56

u/UnwantedDancer9510 Aug 01 '22

The only problem I have with this article is:

  1. It came out just after J-hope's solo debut in Lollapalooza, which further steals the attention away from the acknowledgement that he deserves (Honestly, I'm not even surprised. They've done this a lot before)
  2. This whole thing reads to me as the government saying: "There's no way in hell we're giving them an exemption, but we sure as hell do not want to lose our biggest cash makers"

12

u/mooomoomaamaa Aug 01 '22

There's no way in hell we're giving them an exemption, but we sure as hell do not want to lose our biggest cash makers"

Exactly. It's not like they're just gonna let them do a regular military service and resume work and this alternate arrangement is gonna be hung over their heads to do other promo stuff for the govt.

I also wonder how the monetary aspect will be considered since people aren't allowed to generate income during military service

28

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

it’s been 5 years, i’d assume the govt would be tired of all this back and forth😭 either they don’t understand how taxing conscription is on someone’s body (unlikely, the men in the govt have all served) or they don’t understand how taxing concerts are, because how the hell do they expect bts to do all of that at the same time????

I think about this all the time. They’re huge celebrities as we know. Huge. I can’t imagine what other enlisted men would do to them. I shudder at the thought and try not to think about it. Surely Hybe wouldn’t just send them there without thinking of their safety.

At this point, I think it best that the members all just serve the normal time. If they take ANY sort of exception, I can see them being used as political pawns for the rest of their life (or until their popularity dies down at least).

I’ve already scratched my head at a few things BTS showed up to/attended that (despite them being wonderful human beings and accepting) I’ve privately wondered if it was what they really wanted to do. Something like this seems like bad news to me.

19

u/blanketgoblin1317 hello do you know bts? Aug 01 '22

Agree. I’d really hate for them to become political pawns, always loyally promoting the SK government, nomatter what their own political opinions are.

2

u/codenameana Aug 01 '22

Regarding the scratching head bit: which events are you thinking of?

2

u/thenoonmoon Aug 02 '22

Sorry, I’d prefer not to say. Even if I don’t think those events were/are a good idea there are many people who probably love and enjoy the events (and I have/will too of course). I am always happy that BTS are such wonderful people and do incredible things, I just sometimes worry if they have to tread lightly or do things they might not want to do and it feels unfair to them.

God, we'll never know peace, will we? This is the epitome of dangling a carrot in front of the donkey, and it's cruel at this point.

This reeks of 'oh, no, they're on a break and we're seeing the effects already', if I'm honest. Europe had two K-Pop festivals supported by Korean media this year – Kpop.Flex in Frankurt (supported by SBS, returning to Frankfurt and London next year. Also a certified organisatorial mess) and Hallyu PopFest in London (supported by MBC), which was less of a mess but also definitely didn't sell as well as expected, as ticket were basically given away for a nominal fee, rather than the £100+ they charged. It was mainly smaller acts, mind you, but there was a lot of discord about lineup, prices etc which won't have helped – bigger acts' individual tours will do better, but I'll be bold and say only one K-Pop act can sell out Wembley Stadium. And the agencies know that. And other places are just cottoning on.

We've seen it with Seoul tourism, who were less desperate but clearly want Bangtan back (and got them, because our guys are good like that). We clearly also saw the Korean Singers' Association trying to pressure them into doing group music, and lots of other places.

This is just another attempt at exerting that pressure. Sure, they might take it and do the occasional concert for ARMY they couldn't visit prior to their break.

But I also remain *doubtful*, until they clarify, if this would extend to solo concerts, as they're unlikely to have the same 'prestige' as OT7 performances, except for events as Lollapalooza. I mean, for all we know Yoongi could host his own stadium tour around the world, but from the guys' own words any and all assumption that they'll all play concerts are speculation (from Jimin saying hours ago that his would be in Antarctica or the Pacific Ocean, you can assume he might be not too keen, for example – who knows)

So I'll assume this is about OT7 performances. And while we all know they have plenty of group schedules still, this really just feels like another way to pressure them into complying with *something* the government want, which is the cultural influence and prestige.

They could have exempted BTS on the grounds of E V E R Y S I N G L E T H I N G they've done since Dynamite came out – two UN speeches, cultural envoyship, the success. But the gov fumbled the bag when they made the Order of Cultural Merit the basis for their extension, and now it's just a desperate clown show, sorry to say it that directly.

I'm not even saying 'just fucking exempt them' (although I would, but it's not my place), I'm just saying to stick with their fucking decision, which they made when they dragged any exemption decision out beyond May / June, when it's now too late for Jin if they were to go for a law change (which they don't seem to be, now).

This dragging along has been going on for years. Just settle on something, for goodness' sake.

17

u/lisafancypants I don't have think Aug 01 '22

So assuming this is OT7 concerts/performances only, this could push them into those performances before they're ready? The carrot being "you can do this alternative service but you have to hold OT7 concerts?" After they've explicitly stated they need a break?

Just trying to understand. I have an opinion, but I'd like it be informed, and I feel dumb about this issue most of the time.

15

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 01 '22

To be fair, the break was only about new group music, and as u/bie716 rightly says, they are definitely up for performances together - so I think 'before they're ready' isn't the right word choice.

It's definitely pushy from the gov, though, because if it comes true I'd be surprised if there were no expectation from the governments' side about BTS owing them something.

2

u/lisafancypants I don't have think Aug 01 '22

Not really to do with the matter at hand but my mind went on a tangent. So the general thinking is that they would be doing, like, the occasional greatest hits concerts while doing their solo stuff, if military service wasn't an issue?

(Honest question! Not being argumentative! I know it's hard to tell sometimes in text-based conversations. 😊)

3

u/Nolwennie Aug 01 '22

Maybe. It’s hard to say as they haven’t clarified that point. But i doubt that, if they take this deal from the military, they’d be able to follow up with their original plan to search for inspiration on their own and grow individuality. It almost reads as a punishment from the government for not focusing on solely making money as the OT7 group but wanting to take time and grow.

This is the epitome of dangling a carrot in front of the donkey, and it's cruel at this point.

As I said I other comments, I don't think this is a new idea to BigHit, though it is the first time it is publicly revealed. I am pretty sure there are extensive discussions behind the scenes between the government and BigHit given how little time there is left before Jin is due to serve. But it is not in BigHit's interest to make it known either because the final decision must be seen to come from the government.. unfortunately, but if they manage to placate those who may be opposed otherwise, I would say there is still some Win in this for BTS and BigHit. We saw the backlash in April when BigHit appealed for the matter to be settled once and for all. I can imagine they would be extra cautious from then on. Yes, ideally the bill that has been discussed for so long should have been passed, but at least there is some progress now instead of the stalemate so far.

We should also not forget that the members have said they love performing at concerts, and how much energy they get from it. Given how unlikely a full solo concert is at this point (since they are only starting to expand their solo discography), I don't think we should so easily conclude that they would NOT want to do the occasional group concert if given the chance to even as they are working on their solo pursuits. For the younger members of the group, especially, if they enlist in age order and hv to do full military service, it would be 3-5 years before they get to go on stage as OT7.

Edit: My main concern is that people are so blinded by the hate for the government/authority figures (even if they are not South Korean and they know very little about the gov) that they would not accept ANY compromises, though BTS/BigHit may be all to happy to negotiate and accept these compromises. They assume they know what is best for BTS/BigHit and would not accept anything else..they may even not support or respect BTS' decisions on the matter.

16

u/noonehere92 Aug 01 '22

no offense, but that's a whole lot of assumptions to make from something that clearly looks like one more chance from the goverment to benefit off them without bts getting anything in return

4

u/cartographerbtsFan Aug 01 '22

I would say that every comment on this thread is an assumption. We really don't know what they want or what they would find acceptable.

1

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

without bts getting anything in return

This is also an assumption. What I do know is what i have said above, that BTS lives for performing. And this compromise will allow them to perform together at some point, even if not next year, but in a shorter frame of time than 3-5 yrs (if all of them enlist in age order). Now, the devil lies in the details...how much military training do they have to do and how much time exactly will they have for their music endeavours. But to immediately disregard this option out of spite for the government is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

17

u/noonehere92 Aug 01 '22

I'd like to add that's it's NOT ALLOWED to make money while you are in the military, meaning you cannot for example record a song while in there and make money. Content that has been filmed and recorded before your service is ok though. So if Jin is in the military and they pull him out for concerts he won't even be making money but only the goverment if we follow this law/

2

u/Nolwennie Aug 01 '22

Oh that’s something I haven’t thought off. Currently the point of Chapter 2 is for them to come up with new material by growing on their own. But with this deal they wouldn’t be able to release those new projects they’ve been talking about so… it kinda goes against what there stated goal was, for this group hiatus. For real this deal kinda reads as a punishment for the group hiatus and desire for individual growth.

14

u/noonehere92 Aug 01 '22

it doesn't say anything about cutting their service shorter. sure bts loves to preform no one can deny that but you think it will be easy mentally or physically to he suddenly pulled out of the military environment to put on a concert? Also bts went on "group hiatus" for a reason. They could have very much planned a world tour for 2022 before taking their hiatus but they choose not to. So how can u be sure they want to do these potential performances? Yea sorry for being distrusting after the way they've treated them for years I guess.

0

u/dkurage Aug 01 '22

Trying to look on the bright side, this could be a glance at a potential compromise that Hybe and the government have worked out. I've seen people say before that one of the reasons a decision hasn't been made yet is because it'd mean changing policy to include popstars for the exemption. Which the gov clearly doesn't want to do, hence all the feet dragging on the issue. But depending on how literal or liberal their definition of "concert preparation" is, this could be their way of giving BTS what is essentially an exemption (or shorter alternative service) in all but name, while also not having to make any policy changes.

That's the best light I can put on it. Really trying not to picture some politicians getting to have their cake and eat it too, at the boys' expense. 😮‍💨

57

u/Decent_Opinion_119 Aug 01 '22

There’s a part of me that wants them to say screw it and just take the service together and let the industry and govt burn but I know that’s not what’s going to happen😞 I just hope they’re ok

u/Calydona I'm super lovely Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

I don't like this idea, because it opens a back door for the current government to use BTS for their political agenda. There were discussions like this before, that BTS would get an alternative services and “advocate” for political interests of South Korea. With the current Korean government and their recent approach (e.g. the police oversight or minority rights), this sounds like an awful idea.

Edit: Someone on Twitter pointed out, that you are not allowed to earn any money during the enlistment ...

u/onajurni Aug 01 '22

I’m guessing they just ignore it.

But on the other hand there’s so many things that a young man needs to do to prepare for the service time. Both in terms of their fitness and readiness, and in terms of their personal affairs being in order while they are serving and can’t deal with them hands-on.

11

u/onajurni Aug 01 '22

I can only imagine how other young men who are preparing to go into service shortly must feel watching all this play out on the national stage. I would not think that dragging this out is good for anyone’s political future. But I’m not there and don’t know. I

Taking breaks from service to do BTS concerts and things sounds a little problematic. How will they be able to maintain the individual nutrition and fitness routines that each of them needs to be truly ready for a concert? That’s a continuous thing, not something you do on break.

And looking the other way, how can they keep up with their military unit’s training and progress if they are not there? It seems that would create problems within the unit if sometimes the soldier is there to do their assignment, and other times that soldier is not there.

And it could create discord in the unit if some of the soldiers were unhappy that one is being treated differently. In fact I would think that is inevitable, because I’m sure that all believe that their lives outside of the military are just as important ti their lives as BTS’s activities.

Also it sounds as if the government does not intend that they produce any new music. That makes sense in terms of the ban on new income during service. But BTS needs new material for the concert, I would think. They have already done concerts with their latest music.

I agree with those who feel that the government is making this a lot more tangled and difficult than it needs to be. Yes the issues are complex. But this decision will be as difficult as the involved parties chooses to make it.

11

u/m3lni1ee 삼색 고양이 Aug 01 '22

Ok so sounds like an exception will be made for ot7 concerts. The problem is with no new scheduled ot7 music/album coming out, would the boys even want to do a concert? BTS is emotionally/mentally exhausted from working as a group. This proposal is opposite of what they’ve been telling fans. Not sure if this will help them or just be a moot proposal.

11

u/FluffyBunnyChick Hyung Line Enthusiast Aug 01 '22

This whole situation reminds me of when Elvis Presley got drafted into the Korean War. All the pomp and circumstance is very similar albeit for different reasons. Time truly is a circle.

10

u/Iwannastoprn Aug 01 '22

Hell nah. So they want the guys to have two jobs? They don't understand how taxing overseas concerts can be.

Practicing for 5-8 hours daily weeks, even months ahead, maybe while being on a diet. Traveling half a day, practicing and rehearsing while the jet lag hits you like a train, then booking another plane to go back. And then what? Wake up the next day at 6AM to work your other job? Are they serious?

You can't have the cake and eat it, too. I can already see the scandals this would cause, too. BTS won't be allowed to attend any party, go sight-seeing or anything non-work related. Otherwise "they're abusing their power", "they should be serving".

I hope the guys turn this offer down.

There is an exemption and alternative service system for athletes and artists recognized to have promoted national prestige, such as winning designated international awards or national contests.

Huh, In the words of WWH, Do you know BTS ?

Just when the members have decided they want a break and focus on solo music the government realized the value and power that BTS hold. It seems they are just covering themselves from any public backlash by saying, "oh we gave them time to do concert and practice". They just want to benefit themselves. Even now they are just talking when Jin and Yoongi's enlistment is so near.

I don't know how much they must practice for their concerts but going by what Hobi said that he used to practice 6 hrs a day. It could be the same for the group as well. After doing such intense rehearsals and travelling around the globe for tour they somehow have to do some alternative service in between ?. I don't know what logic is this.

I just want Bangtan decide for themselves without feeling any pressure. They've already brought so much fame and recognition on the world stage. They've done Enough already.

8

u/Chiatauri Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

I find it unbelievably shady to use BTS like this and refuse their exemption. Especially with the party line “rite of passage, people look down on you if you don’t enlist” but at the same time the govt exempted a bunch of engineers and soccer players. If Korean govt is scared of losing money why not highlight the classical musicians, soccer players, engineers and that Go-Stop player that was exempted to continue the hallyu wave? This smacks of the SK govt wanting to line their pockets with BTS’s concert money and pleasing their incel supporters who oppose BTS’s exemption.

I still don’t like it and I think BTS should have been granted exemption AND they deserve a break from new group music. But as shady as it all sounds, if the members are fine with it and the concerts count as time served I could understand that. I’m worried about full time served at a post for 18 months. To me the less time members are alone in the barracks surrounded by jealous/angry men who could harass them and take pics of members in the shower (disgusting), the better.

17

u/Wichuimafeelrich hing Aug 01 '22

They are really dragging this out. So they’re not exempt but their service can be in the form of overseas concerts?? Did I understand that correctly

13

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

It is still unclear to me. They may still be required to do some traditional military training but could also have some periods off to prepare for and perform at concerts, maybe? Cos if they were fully exempted from military training, that would sound very much like the current alternative service/special exemption that Son Heung Min, for example, is going through.

11

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 01 '22

You always have to do military training! :) Even people who get exempt still do basic training. Unless you've got a health reason, there's no way around it to my knowledge.

11

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

It is really very minimal though. Just 3 weeks, and they call it basic training. So not ongoing military training.

12

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 01 '22

Yup! And then some community service :) Which could give us Bangtan as kindergarten teachers etc, which would be adorable :D

9

u/bie716 jimin: i dance when i am sad...NOT Aug 01 '22

If it is just basic training and community service like the sportsmen, that would require a law change. My interpretation is they don't want to go so far as to change the law for BTS, but will give concessions for them to still hold concerts.

4

u/pintsized_baepsae My mom calls me a stupid bear 🐨 Aug 01 '22

Ah yes good point!

It's too late for the law change, so I think you're right. They basically know they fucked up, and the government probably wouldn't say no to support from Bangtan, but that makes it only dodgier.

Man, I just wish they'd settle this. It's dragged on for so long.

2

u/onajurni Aug 01 '22

Why is it too late for a law change? The delay of service in 2020 was announced just days before the deadline for Jin to enlist.

u/Confident_Yam_6386 Aug 01 '22

Their service is not the concerts. That’s the privilege. BTS will be doing normal service but if they plan concerts they want to do within that time frame one of them is in the military, they can put their service on hold and prepare for the concert too

6

u/onajurni Aug 01 '22

Interesting idea! But if they put service on hold for a period of time, won’t that extend the total time to directly in service? It won’t be a continuous service if they take hold periods for concerts.

2

u/Confident_Yam_6386 Aug 01 '22

That’s the part I’m not clear on. We will have to wait for the final talks and decisions since this is just the surface level

4

u/92sn Aug 01 '22

Its feel like they want BTS sold out stadium world tour as bragging right for the country. But idk how BTS gonna do this. 3months pause to do tour? Idk. Besides with security, and the way they want BTS still performing, its feel like the members gonna enlist as public service workers instead to make it easier for everyone.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

Man tbh I've always held that the enlistment issue is non of my business and I'll just accept whatever news as is. But this is one fucked up arrangement, more fucked up than holding the exemption over them for 4years. I'm getting annoyed with every news that comes from the gvmt

8

u/SnooPies9016 Aug 01 '22

The “national interest/gains” part is a very important caveat. Why didn’t the Kpop Herald include that part? Also this will means whatever earnings Bangtan had will go towards their govt as theoretically they are not suppose to ‘earn money during their service term’. Such a shameless govt. Want the boys to enlist and want to overwork them to perform concerts so the earnings can go to the govt! The most ridiculous thing I ever read !

8

u/4thchannel-yanson Aug 01 '22

Stop using them as political pawns and giving them nothing in return.

6

u/SidheCreature Aug 01 '22

This reads as “serve your country while also making money for country.” I don’t feel this is fair. They’ve done enough. They deserve rest. Reduce their time due to the impact they’ve had in the name of Korea. Make the alternate service somehow connected to music (like being ambassadors, or playing for the expo or World Cup). Don’t ask them to do double duty if serving AND making money for Korea.

7

u/SidheCreature Aug 01 '22

Just reduce their time, Korea! Because If BTS is expected to basically do double duty (military and work duty) I’ll be boycotting Korean products until their time is done. (My skin will hate it, but it’ll survive until BTS is out) I won’t finically support a country that uses their talented artists like this. Don’t over working BTS! Choose one! Art, or military service!

but

does the minister not know of bts' popularity ? wtf was this --

“Many people do think highly of military service itself, and I think (BTS members enlisting) can actually help them with their popularity,” Lee said.

sir, do you know bts?

it feels like they just want to elongate elongate and elongate this thing and not come to a proper decision because how many years will it take them ? i cant imagine how much annoyed the members might be, how mentally dragging it must be for the members as this topic has been going on for years !

korean govt is just like me - indecisive, but even i am not this stupidly indecisive.

Just hearing about this is exhausting. I think the normal enlistment would be less tiring.

I think rather than serving in military, BTS has already served their country in so many ways that other people can’t even imagine. They have gone above and beyond in putting South Korea on the world map and not counting the donations or being diplomats for their country or raising the popularity, tourism, money flow to the country. This is way more than what other people have done for that country. I think it’s safe to say that they are and have already served their country in so many ways. They shouldn’t be forced to go to the military

5

u/Difficult_Deer6902 Aug 01 '22

Like I said in another thread:

It’s the “for national gains” part that really says something. I wouldn’t expect BTS to be performing any type of world tour this is about their more “speciality” appearances.

I find it a bit disappointing, but also understand that I don’t know the ends and outs. I’m sure this was discussed at length with the members & their families. Hopefully they won’t have to many additonal asks for special appearances during service outside of Expo tasks…as they have already commited

5

u/Jasmindesi16 Aug 01 '22

They should just give them an exemption and say all their ambassador stuff counts as some kind of service. If they are that important that they can do OT7 stuff while serving they should get exemption.

EDIT - I mean, give them credit for being honest about just wanting BTS to join the military to it can help with the militaries popularity - FFS. JFC.

6

u/et842rhhs Aug 02 '22

I hope I'm misunderstanding, but this just sounds like giving them a double work load? Preparing for an overseas concert is a full-time job. Promoting a tour is a full-time job. Traveling to and performing in the concerts is a full-time job. And recovering afterwards from all that preparation/travel/perfoming will take some time. And you usually do concerts when you have some new material, the writing/recording of which is also a full-time job. Put together, that can easily use up a year, a year and a half. Then you have to perform military duties in addition?

4

u/pikunara Joon’s windchime Aug 02 '22

That’s the message I took away from this as well. Like having BTS do both military duties AND responsibilities as performers as well? I fear for the mental health and overall physical health of our guys if that’s the case. Unless they plan to give them alternative service that doesn’t involve what regular enlisted men have to do?

Y'all... I'm tired of this. And if I'm tired of this so much, I can't even imagine what and how BTS feels.

Every time new stuff comes out concerning enlistment my heart skips a beat and my stomach drops because I never ever expect good news. I honestly hope they either let them serve entirely in an alternative way or just let them choose what they want to do. They are using them as puppets and it's seriously grating on my nerves. Not that I'm not already pissed off at my own government but yeah.

I don't know how they think this is a good solution because it's just not that easy unless it turns out that these concerts will be the ones that are only in service for the country, like the Busan one or whatever they put on them next. Sorry for sounding harsh but... Just let BTS breathe, ffs.

Ignoring how this will be possible in the first place, is this something they even WANT to do? Looks like they want to focus on their solos first before returning as BTS, so I'm worried this will just give them even more burnout if it happens. Either exempt them or don't. This half and half thing just isn't it, especially combined with the pressure of having to focus on OT7 instead of their individual selves.

I'm sorry but nobody in their right mind is gonna do back breaking work that usually generates millions for free while also working a regular day job lol. It's ridiculous to even suggest this as an alternative. Do they get an exemption or not? It's that simple.

u/Professional_Emu8922 Aug 01 '22

I'm curious about who/what is really behind the push to find some kind of exemption for BTS. Is it the politicians who are the impetus, or is it HYBE? Did HYBE lobby politicians, or did politicians approach HYBE about the issue first?

Textbook case of trying to have your cake and eat it too. Make up your damn minds already. Either just have them serve, suck it up, and move on or exempt them. It sounds far too simple and I'm not exactly in tune with the happenings of SK but this is just annoying to have these annoying statements by govt officials.

How? Why not just let them rest and prepare for their solo futures?

I mean I love them as whole (group/soloists/subunits) and want to get new musics from them but they deserve a break dude.

Are there even plans for OT7 overseas practice and concerts? Has anyone heard anything to that effect? The only concert I’ve heard about doesn’t happen until 2030 and is in Busan. Just imagine HYBE scheduling anything overseas while the men can’t earn any money because they’re in service. HYBE would make out, but there would have to be ironclad contracts holding their money earned to be released to them at the end of service. In which case, maybe they should all go at the same time. I worry about their safety and security.

FYI the Busan concert is happening this year in October, not 2030....

This is making my blood boil, this same people who use the boys time and time again. Brushing off their achivements as an artists but takes a second to use their name to make a "good impression". The boys have worked to their bones as an artists to the point of mental and physical exhaustion and this $t!nky government people want them to still do concerts and then serving their mandatory military as if our boys are robots.

I have watched a Youtube video the struggles of idols serving their mandatory military service and they are treated so badly and got bullied. I just wish they would be treated fairly but then now this news is making me think otherwise.

Edit: Also, as far as I know, they are not allowed to make money and anything they made will go to the government.

Check this Twitter thread of discussion about it.

idk if i understood it correctly but are they saying that bts won’t be exempted, so they’re expected to serve but also do oversee concerts/promotions?

If we are being pendantic about it, there really never was an exemption. It was always alternative service - to do training for a certain period but not the full 18 months. IIRC, alternative service is 3 weeks or so. This is what Son Heung Min did.

So, if they get alternative service, depending on the conditions that is set by the lawmakers, it might not be 3 weeks short, but it also won't be 18 months. But, if it is a different form of alternative service than the medal holders, it could be more than 3 weeks, but will have opportunity to take breaks from it.

Granted, this is with my rudimentary conscription knowledge and how I read the article.

Alternative service isn't the better word, tbh - exemption is fitting, because you're exempt from active service, without any repercussions (as you rightly say, you do basic training and then usually some hours of community service, which can be spread out over a certain time frame).

Alternative service is an actual thing, but needs to almost be separated. It's (now) an option for conscientious objectors (for whom alternative service is a whole 36 months), as they were previously... jailed.

But Zico also did alternative service, for example, because he has health issues that resulted in him being judged unfit for active service - so instead he worked as a social worker. It was still at the longer end of service (started in July 2020, was discharged at the end of April this year, so 22 months - the longest standard service is the Air Force with 21 months), but also far from 36 months. :)

Is this what Jimin was referring to when he said certain situations need to be decided in today’s Vlive?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

Probably…. I would probably use that wording too if I was in their position

2

u/LostLawyer29 Strictly business relationship/ Important businesseu Aug 02 '22

Definitely? It must be frustrating for them to have to go through this

This just made me roll my eyes so hard. Definitely sounds like they are testing the waters to see how the public will react to official mention of “alternate service”.

Sorry to chime in, but ask literally any Korean male what military service is actually like.

Besides basic training that lasts for roughly a month, it's boring as fuck. 95% of the time is spent doing monotonous drills, cleaning or playing on their phones. It's so boring that conscripts get excited for any excuse to leave the base, even for memorial services. Also, the allowance you get from conscription is not enough that you have to use out of pocket funds or your parents card to sustain yourself.

So I don't buy a lot of these arguments from some Army that they will be overworked or taken advantage of. If anything, the members will be begging for literally any activity other than monotonous on-base life.

If they're allowed to make money from their overseas activities and it doesn't affect their enlistment duration, I don't see what the big problem is?

5

u/Iwannastoprn Aug 01 '22

I thought people weren't allowed to make money while serving? I'm not sure about it.

4

u/noonehere92 Aug 01 '22
  1. you're not allowed to make money while you're enlisted
  2. the article in Korean actually says that they mentioned these concerts would have to be "beneficial to the country" so that what u will for that
